Moment in Time

The click of the camera alerts her to the person taking her picture. He is smiling like he has seen the greatest beauty in the world.

“Dean! Stop that and take some of the landscape for a change.” Mary said as she tried to hide her face from him.

“The landscape isn’t as beautiful as you are. Come on. Let me take a few more.” Dean pulled at her hand in front of her face.

“No!” Mary giggled and fell into him.

“Ah then I shall have to kiss you until you give in.” Dean said. “I love the way your cheeks turn pink when I kiss you.”

“They do not!” Mary protested.

“Kiss me then I will take a picture to prove it to you.” Dean said.

“That is so not going to happen.” Mary laughed.

Dean suddenly pulled her close and kissed her until she moaned with desire. He pulled away and snapped a picture.

“That isn’t fair!” Mary insisted.

Dean laughed. “Yes it is!”

It became Dean’s favorite picture of her. Even after they were old and grey, he still saw his Mary as she was on that day forever preserved on film.

Two Sisters

Two Sisters

Diane looked out the window at the clouds. It had been a tough couple of days with her family but she was on her way home finally.

Holidays are hell especially when you don't get along with the people you are spending them with. She really didn't get along with her family.

This time her sister was even worse than usual. Diane never got along with Laura when they were kids and now they were worse.

Laura started in on her as soon as she was through the front door of her Mom's house. Laura didn't like her hairstyle or her clothes. Laura called her shoes cheap. Laura was nitpicky about everything.

It didn't help that she was still single and Laura kept waving her new engagement ring around. Diane wondered if Laura really had a fiancé. He wasn't with her and Mom had never seen him either. He sounded too perfect to be real.

Diane smiled. She knew that even though Laura had a good job she was always broke. Laura stayed in debt.

Diane began to wonder if Laura had bought the engagement ring for herself and just made up the fiancé. It wasn't hard to believe considering Laura also had a huge imagination and a habit of lying.

Diane made a mental note to google her soon to be brother in law when she got home. She wondered what she would find. She wondered if he even existed.

An announcement came over the speakers to fasten the seat belt and gave information on the temperature on the ground.

Diane cinched up her seat belt and got ready to land. All she had was her carry-on so she would be home soon.

Hundreds of miles away Laura walked into her small studio apartment and looked around. She laid her keys and mail on the counter. She plopped on the nearby sofa.

She took off her engagement ring and looked at it before dropping it on the table in front of her. It had served its purpose. She didn't need to wear it anymore. She would return it to her divorced friend in the morning.

Laura didn't have a fiancé. She lied so her mother wouldn't bug her about being single again. It was a perk that it annoyed her sister.

Laura was jealous of Diane. She always had been even when she was a kid. Diane was older and seemed to always have it together. Now Diane had the life that Laura wanted. She didn’t think it was fair at all.

Laura was a mess. The stack of mail on the counter was all bills. She barely made it month to month. Her job was low paying and dead end. She had lied about it to her family too.

Diane unlocked the door of her apartment and went inside. She put her stack of mostly junk mail on the table and dropped her keys in the bowl next to it. She looked around and sighed. It felt good to be home.

She plopped on the sofa and turned on the television. She contemplated a glass of wine and a hot bath while flipping through the channels. She finally turned off the television and got up to do just that.

Her phone ringing in her purse stopped her. She went to answer it. She saw the caller ID and sent the call to voice mail. It was her mother and she had already had enough of her.

An hour later she came back to find five missed calls from her mother. She listened to the messages in horror.

Laura was dead. She had committed suicide.

My Dear Beloved

I walk upon the street that we once walked. It doesn't seem the same.

I know that it was springtime when we last strolled this way and now it is fall. The buds were on these same trees that the colored leaves are falling from. It’s like they know you are gone and I am alone.

I am not angry that you left. I am only sad that I am on my own once more. Fate knew this would come to be and there was no mercy in its heart. There was no warning to spare us.

I will walk this street that we once traveled every day until we are together again. I promise that to you my beloved.

I will think of the words we said and the way you held onto my arm. I will let those memories comfort me for now. That is all I can do.

Good bye my beloved for a little while at least.

 One Last Drink

Billy and David had been friends forever. That was what made it so tragic. Billy was gone and David was lost without him. It all started the night of the storm.

The accident happened on a black ice coated curve of the road. Billy’s truck slid on the ice and over the bank. The truck hit the guardrail and flipped twice. It landed upside down and crushed the cab. The only thing that didn’t happen was it didn’t catch on fire.

It took two tow trucks to get it get it out of the ravine. It took the Jaws of Life to remove Billy from the truck.

The memorial went up the next day. A cross was added by a local church the day after. There were cards candles and stuffed animals from all his friends and family.

Then there was one lone bottle of Jack Daniels with a grocery store bouquet of flowers in it. Some thought it was inappropriate but if they knew the two men then they would understand.

Even though Billy was sober the night he died, they had been drinking buddies for years. The bottle that David placed at the memorial was the last one that they had shared. There had been one last drink left in the bottle. There was one last drink between friends.

Revenge

Revenge

There was something about this part of town that always made the hairs on the back of her neck stand up. Why was it that all clandestine meetings took place in creepy places? That was something she just didn’t like.

She got out of her car and looked around. There was no one there. It was all right. She was early. It helps when you are walking into the unknown.

She walked into the abandoned warehouse with her gun drawn. Her eyes darted to the dark corners looking for movement. She saw a plump rat scurry away as she walked farther inside the dark and gloomy building. She listened for any sounds and heard nothing.

She would just have to wait. It didn’t matter. She had waited this long she could wait a few more minutes.

She dropped her gun down to her waist and sat on a crate to wait for her appointment. She hoped they wouldn’t be late. She hated that.

It was four minutes past the hour when they arrived. Car tires screeching on asphalt alerted her to their presence.

“So here we are.” The mobster said as he walked into the warehouse with his bodyguard. “What do you want from me?”

“I don’t want anything but there is someone out there that wants you dead.” She said with a smirk.

“If you kill me, he will kill you.” He grinned.

“That isn’t what I heard.” She smiled and raised her gun to point at his heart. “I heard they all want you gone. Their loyalties have been bought by your rival.”

“I don’t believe you.” He shrugged. “You don’t know nothing about nothing.”

“You’re right but soon you won’t either.” She stood and took a step closer. She raised her gun and pulled the trigger.

The mobster fell to the ground, dead.

“Clean up this mess.” She said to the bodyguard.

“What should I do with him?” One of the goons asked.

“Put him in the river. That was where he put my father.” She told him as she walked toward the door. “I have business to attend to.”

She walked into the open air and took a long deep breath. Avenging her father really didn’t give her the satisfaction she hoped it would. She holstered her gun and climbed into her car. She drove away.

She had a new life waiting for her in another state with another identity. It was time to get to it.

Good Morning My Love

“Good morning my love.” She said as she walked into the room. It was not unusual to her to be the first one up in the morning. He was always a sleepy head.

She turned to the bed as if by habit. She looked at the empty bed and remembered that he was no longer there.

She had lost him to the fever that had ravaged the town. Scarlet fever was the name of the disease that took her beloved.

It was the cruelest of things. He had caught the fever on their anniversary. Before they could head out on their trip he was too ill to stand. He was in the hospital that night and gone the next morning.

They had to sedate her until the funeral for her beloved was over. She couldn’t stop her tears and her heart from breaking.

They had been married for twenty five years. They had been each other’s first love. They had met as children and been friends their whole lives. There had never thought to love anyone but each other.

She sat on the bed and sighed. There was nothing for her to do sit by herself and be alone. She hated being alone. She grabbed the pillow and hugged it.

“Good bye my love. I will miss you every day until we are together again.”

She started to cry. The tears streamed down her face. She felt someone kiss her cheek. She touched her cheek and gasped.

Welcome to the Russell

The trip has been a long one. The plane was late at the gate. When I finally got on board, I got a headache. Chewing gum did not help; neither did the man snoring behind me.

I grabbed my bags and hailed a taxi. It was a short trip to the hotel. I got out of the taxi and was greeted by the sight of the grand old hotel

The Doorman smiled as he opened the taxi door. He was smartly dressed. He actually seemed happy to see me. “Welcome to the Russell, ma’am.”

“Thank you.” I replied. I couldn’t help but smile back. It was if his smile was contagious.

The Porter rushed to take my bags from the boot of the taxi. He smiled at me. “Is this all there is, ma’am?”

“Yes.” I smiled at him too. I couldn’t help it.

“Very good. Welcome to the Russell.” He said as he picked up my bags and put them on his trolley at the top of the steps.

“Thank you.” I said as I walked up the steps.

The Doorman held the door as I entered the lush lobby. Rich velvet seating and exquisitely carved woodwork spoke to the age and greatness of the place. My steps were padded by the thick carpet as I approached the desk to sign in.

The Desk Clerk smiled and asked my name. I gave it without hesitation and smiled back at his cheery face.

“Your room is ready and waiting, ma’am. Welcome to the Russell. We hope to make your stay here enjoyable.” The Desk Clerk said with a smile.

“Thank you I’m sure I will find it so.” I took the old fashioned brass key from him. I looked at it and realized how rare it was to still have a real hotel key in the modern world. I smiled at the thought then back at the desk clerk.

The Porter led me to a lift. An old man was sitting on a stool inside. He was the Operator. He gave me a cheeky grin as he stood and closed the doors. The porter told him the floor and the old man started the apparatus.

When we reached our destination, the old Operator opened the doors tipped his hat at me. “Welcome to the Russell, ma’am.”

“Thank you.” I replied before I followed the Porter to my room.

The Porter opened the door and put the bags on the stand for me. “If there is anything else ma’am, just give us a ring.”

“I will. Thank you.” I handed him a tip and gave him a smile as he handed me the key.

“Thank you.” He said as he hurried out the door.

I fell on the overstuffed bed and kicked off my shoes. Finally, I felt welcome somewhere if only for a little while.
