The Dark Army gathered in the common room when Wincet summoned them.

“Isadora has a mission for us.” Wincet said as they walked in. “It may be nothing but I think it’s worth checking it out.”

“In the mountains of Gracea on Castilane, there is a legend of a beast with a hunger for the blood of humans. It has killed many times and always comes and goes without a sound.” Izzie started. “This month alone it has killed ten strong men. They were found without a drop of blood in their body floating in the nearby lake. The only wound is a bite mark on their neck.”

“It sounds like a vampire but they’re just tales. They aren’t real.” Jace said.

“This one is.” Tona confirmed. “I heard about it when I was working for the Sholar on Castilane. No one in his army would go anywhere near the mountains and they were the most trained and deadly army in that sector. I heard that he hired three men to go into the mountains to track it down but they were never heard of again.”

“Yes but they aren’t the infamous Dark Army that everyone whispers about.” Izzie grinned. “You all have quite the reputation in the universe these days. You are equally feared and admired.”

“Flattery aside, we do have a unique skill set.” Nellis looked around at the others. “We can find it and bring it out of the mountains into the light of day. That way no one will have a reason to fear it anymore. They’ll see if for the beast that it is and stop thinking its something evil.”

“Won’t that just it turn to ash?” Jace asked.

They all turned and looked at him.

“On my world, if a vampire comes out into direct sunlight it turns into ash and blows away.” Jace explained.

“That is the silliest thing that I have ever heard.” Tona shook her head. “That must make your people feel a lot safer but I don’t think that’s true. Most of the men were fed on were taken at the shift change for the guards and that is mid-day when the sun is at its peak.”

Jace made a face. “So no ash? That’s disturbing.”

“I propose that Nellis Dallys and I go in and find it then Tona and Jace can come in and capture it then bring it out.” Izzie looked around for approval.

“Basically, I’m the bait and Tona is the one that takes it down.” Jace plopped down into a chair. “Lovely!”

“Well, I don’t think it will eat an elf.” Izzie looked at Tona. “Is that what you heard?”

“As far as I know it only eats humans.” Tona nodded. “At least, that was all that had been reported by the commander at the garrison at Gracea when I was there.”

“Doesn’t the Exaltanese trade with Castilana?” Wincet asked. “Maybe Rix can get us more recent information.”

“I’ll send him a message on the sub space.” Nellis walked over to the communications device and tuned it to the frequency that Rix was known to use.

“The rest of you gather your gear.” Wincet shooed them to their rooms. “I want to send you out as soon as Nellis finishes talking to Rix. Tona! A word please.”

Tona reluctantly walked back to where Wincet was standing. “I know what you want to talk about and I have nothing to say. He can sit in that room and rot.”

“You married him. Don’t you think you should try to get along with him?” Wincet asked.

“No! Tona exclaimed. “He still thinks that he’s my master and I’m his slave. He actually brought me his dirty laundry and demanded that I wash it. I told him to do it himself. If he wants clean socks then he needs to clean his socks. He wanted to marry me and not take the currency I offered him then he will have to be happy with what he has.”

“Tona, you need to make peace with him or at least try to be receptive to him.” Wincet said.

“Now you sound like my mother.” Tona sighed. “Just open a portal and I’ll toss him back home then he won’t bother anyone here anymore.”

“You could just ask him to leave.” Wincet put his hand on Tona’s shoulder. “He’s miserable. He may just leave on his own. Try to talk to him, without trying to kill him, please.”

“Maybe you should speak to him.” Tona wrinkled her nose. “I don’t think I can look at him without wanting to kill him right now. Not after last night and the stunt he pulled.”

“What happened?” Wincet asked.

“He had the nerve to come into my room last night while I was sleeping and get in bed with me. I woke up and nearly slit his throat.” Tona wrinkled her nose. “He said he was there to take what was his and I told him there wasn’t anything in my bed that was his. He stormed out then he slammed his door.”

“So that’s who did that.” Wincet grinned. “I thought Nellis and Isadora were having another argument.”

“No. They were playing shifties in her room.” Tona made a face. “They were really loud too. Do you know how thin the walls are in this place?”

Wincet chuckled. “I see that I will have to put a sound proofing spell around each of their rooms. Shifties?”

“That’s what they call it but it just sounds like sex to me.” Tona shuddered. “Gross!”

Wincet laughed then sighed. “Go talk to Barth. Maybe, he has changed his mind about holding you to this arranged marriage now that he knows things won’t be happening as he wanted them to..”

Tona shrugged then walked toward the living quarters. She was almost to Barth’s room when Jace came out of his.

“Going to ask the husband for permission to leave?” Jace smirked.

“No but you might want to come with me so that I don’t kill him.” Tona grabbed Jace by the arm and pulled him down to Barth’s room. She opened the door without knocking. “Barth, I need to tell you something.” She glanced back at Jace.

“What do you want to tell me that you haven’t already?” Barth stood up and glanced curiously at Jace.

“I will never love you because I love Jace.” Tona grabbed Jace’s face and planted a big wet kiss on him. “There I committed adultery now you can divorce me without shame.”

“I have grounds for having you beaten, you mean.” Barth glared at Jace. “But I know that will not win you over to me. If a divorce is what you want then I will give it to you. He may have you. Tell the sorcerer to send me back and I will have the marriage contract voided.”

“And my parents?” Tona asked.

“They will not be harmed.” Barth promised. “They provided me with a wife as contracted but I was not prepared for you. I will have to find a woman less difficult to marry.”

“Thank you. Now, we have to go.” Tona grabbed Jace by the arm and pulled him back down the hall. “Thanks for the assist.”

“Any time.” Jace smiled. “Get your gear. I will tell Wincet that Barth wants to go back home.”

Tona rushed down the hallway to her room to get her gear as Jace turned to leave the living quarters.

Everyone started to assemble on the Traveler’s Bridge. Wincet looked around. “Where is Tona?”

“She was getting her gear when I left her.” Jace said. “Barth agreed to give her a divorce and he wants to go back home. You might want to send him after we leave so that he won’t be here when she gets back.”

“I will make a point of it.” Wincet nodded.

Overhead there was a small craft flying low. it looked like a small cargo ship. It landed near the main buildings.

“That’s not Rix.” Nellis said. “His ship is bigger. Borne, do you know what kind of ship that is?”

“It is a shuttle craft not a cargo ship. The markings are in the Oldene language.” Borne told them. “Perhaps Hestrick is here to make peace.”

“Or steal something.” Nellis looked at Wincet. “We better go see what’s going on.”

Nellis and Jace headed back to see who it was and what they were doing there on Centra.

Inside the living quarters, Tona had started to collect her gear when the door opened and someone stepped inside. The intruder didn’t say a word as he stood in the doorway.

“I’m almost ready.” Tona said. “I have to find my ….”

A knife flew through the air and hit Tona in the back. She crumpled to the ground with a whimper. Her eyes closed and she was still.

The intruder walked over and pulled out the knife then left her to die. The intruder left as quietly as he came.

The craft took off before anyone could reach the end of the bridge. Jace and Nellis looked at each other and started running.

They reached the common room and nothing seemed disturbed.

“I’ll check the living quarters and you check the workshop.” Jace suggested. He didn’t wait for Nellis to object he ran to the rooms and went straight to Tona’s room. “Tona!?”

Jace opened the door and found her on the floor. She was bleeding badly from a wound on her back. He knelt down to check her pulse and was relieved to find a weak one.

“Please don’t die. I’ll be right back.” Jace rushed back out of the room. He met Nellis at the entrance to the hallway. “Nellis! Get Wincet Tona is wounded. I’m going to check on Barth.”

Nellis nodded and hurried back the way he came.

Jace went to Barth’s room and found it empty. All of Barth’s clothes and belongings were gone.

That bastard did that to her then ran. Jace slammed his hand on the door frame. He looked down the hall and saw Wincet go into Tona’s room. He went back down the hall to see what was happening.

Dallys blocked his way into the room. “Jace, there was nothing Wincet could do. She lost too much blood.”

“No!” Jace tried to push past Dallys but she held him back. “She had a pulse when I was in there. Please check again. She had a pulse.”

Nellis grabbed Jace and pulled him out of the doorway. “Where is Barth?”

“He’s gone.” Jace closed his eyes to gain control of his emotions. “He must have left in the ship. His room has been cleared out.”

Wincet came out of Tona’s room. “Dallys, you and Isadora clean her up. I will take her body to Tolkarian myself. Nellis, where was Rix when you spoke to him?”

“He was two systems over getting building supplies for the settlement on Avia.” Nellis told him. “Do you want me to see if he can catch up with the ship?”

“Yes.” Wincet nodded. “Have Borne give you the ships name and registry information. I want Barth brought back here. I will deal with him myself.”

Nellis rushed off to the communication device to get in touch with Rix.

Jace looked at Wincet. “He didn’t have to kill her. He could have just divorced her. He said he was going to divorce her. Why did he kill her?”

Wincet put his hands on Jace’s shoulders. “He will be punished for what he has done. He made the mistake of harming one of mine and he will pay.”

Jace nodded. “Yes he will.”

“Come, let the women take care of her now.” Wincet pulled Jace along with him into the common room. “Nellis, did you raise Rix?”

“Yes.” Nellis came over to where they were. “Rix was already off the planet when I got him. He saw the craft on his monitor and he’s in pursuit. Do you think Hestrick is behind this?”

“It’s not showy enough for Hestrick. He likes his work to be noticed.” Wincet shook his head. “Besides, he doesn’t know Tona’s real face. She was disguised as a boy when he saw her.”

“Whoever it was knows Barth and was in contact with him.” Nellis rubbed his head. “I’ll check the communication logs to see who he was talking to. What about the mission?”

“The beast can wait for now. We need to find Barth and find out what happened.” Wincet said.

“He killed her that’s what happened.” Jace dropped into a chair and held his head in his hands. He let his tears fall. “I should have stayed behind with her.”

“You didn’t know what he had planned.” Wincet sat down next to him. “He must have been planning this from the time he arrived.”

“Could you have saved her if I had reached her sooner?” Jace asked.

“No. It was a mortal wound to the heart.” Wincet shook his head. “No one could have saved her from that. Besides, he pulled the knife out to speed up the bleeding.”

“It doesn’t make sense at all.” Jace wiped his face. “That’s what a trained killer would do but Barth didn’t seem trained at anything except being an ass.”

“You have a point.” Wincet nodded. “That’s why we need to find out what happened from Barth. He’s the only witness.”

Nellis walked over and sat in the chair next to them. “Barth was in contact with a merchant name Fin on Oldene. I talked to the man and he said that Barth’s father did business with him on a regular basis. The ship we saw is his but he loaned it out to Barth’s father, Helis.”

“So the bastard called his daddy to come get him?” Jace started to get angry. “I wonder whose idea it was to kill Tona, Barth’s or his father’s.”

“From what Tona told me, I would say it was the father.” Izzie sat down on the arm of the chair next to Nellis. “She’s ready Wincet but I think we all need a few minutes to say goodbye to her before you take her home.”

Wincet nodded. “I agree. It will be difficult enough for her family without strangers there at the memorial service.”

The communication device alert went off.

“That’s probably Rix. I’ll handle it.” Nellis said as he got up and walked over to the communication device.

“Nellis, are you there?”

“I’m here Rix. What’s up?”

“I see them. I’ll let you know what happens after I make contact with the pilot. I hope that I don’t have to use these new pulse cannons I just put on. I'm not sure all the bolts are tight. Rix out.”

On the ship, Rix sent a message over to the other ship. The pilot slowed down and then the communications device sounded.

“Well, this is either going to go really well or really badly.” Valn said as he sat in the copilot’s seat.

“It better go really well.” Rix said as he slowed the ship to match the other ships speed. “We need the Dark Army’s friendship. They are the only people that will help us when we need it without expecting something in exchange.”

Valn nodded.

“I am Captain Phiks of the Oldene merchant fleet. Who are you and what do you want?” The pilot said.

“I’m Rix, captain of the Avian Wing. Did you stopped at a planet called Centra?”

“Yes. I picked up another passenger.”

“You have a murderer on board.”

“You must be mistaken. I have a merchant and his son on board. They are on their way to Oldene for a meeting. There’s no murderer here.”

“That merchant’s son’s wife was murdered just before you took off. Look friend, I’m here by request of the Dark Army. Do you know who they are?”

“Yes … Everyone knows who they are.”

“The woman that was murdered was a member of the Dark Army. She was in her quarters, unarmed, where she thought she was safe. She was stabbed in the back as she was preparing for a mission.”

“You’re saying that one of these idiots killed a warrior from the Dark Army in cold blood?”

“Yes and you are helping them which makes you a target for the Dark Army too.”

“Come get them. I don’t want any trouble from the Dark Army. I’m not paid enough to get a price on my head because to these fools.”

Rix looked over at Valn “I need you stay here and open the refrigeration unit. We’ll put them in there it’s the only compartment that locks from the outside.”

Valn nodded. “Good luck and be careful.”

Rix docked his ship with the smaller ship and went aboard. The captain met him at the hatch. “You’re an Exaltanese!”

“Yes. Where are your passengers?” Rix didn’t have time to chat. He knew his best chance was to take them by surprise.

The captain pointed to a door a few feet away. He walked over and opened it.

Rix turned into a rhinsa and knocked both men out before they could move against him. Rix turned back into his normal state and looked at the captain.

“Help me get them on my ship then you can go on your way.” Rix went to pick up the older man and saw blood on the hem of his pants. “I think I found the murder right here.”

Phiks picked up Barth and threw him over his shoulder. “A find mess I’ve gotten myself into. Tell the Dark Army that I had no idea what they were about.”

“I will, friend.” Rix shoved Helis through the hatch to Valn and turned to get Barth. “Valn find something to tie them up with. Use good strong knots. We don’t want them to get loose.”

“Wait here and I will get their things.” Phiks turned and went to get their bags. He brought them to the hatch. “I want nothing of theirs on my ship.”

Rix shoved Barth through the hatch as he waited on Phiks. He took the bags the man brought him and tossed them through the hatch to Valn. “I will tell them that you were very cooperative.”

“Thanks. Now, I guess I should get back to Oldene. Phiks nodded goodbye and sealed the hatch once Rix was back on his ship.

After Barth and his father were safely tied up and inside the refrigeration unit, Rix looked in the bags belonging to the two men. One bag was full of currency and the other two were personal items.

“That’s enough to live on for the rest of their lives.” Valn said as he looked at the currency.

“Let’s head to Centra and Wincet and the others are waiting for these two.” Rix closed the bag and headed for the controls. “I’ll let Nellis know we have them while you turn the ship around.”

Valn nodded.

Nellis had been waiting by the communication device when Rix signaled him.

“Nellis?”

“I’m still here, Rix.”

“We have them we are on our way.”

“Thank you. I’ll tell Wincet.”

“Rix out.”

Nellis turned and found Wincet standing near him. “Rix is bringing them here. What are we going to do to them?”

“I will be the one to punish them.” Wincet said. “The rest of you need to grieve then we all will have to find a way to move on from this.”

“This is going to leave a gap in our skills set.” Nellis said. “Tona is going to be hard to replace.”

Wincet nodded. “I know. They will be here soon. We will leave for Tona’s home world after I deal with them. You should go say your goodbye.”

Nellis nodded and went into the living quarters.

In Tona’s room, Dallys stood by the bed where she and Izzie had put Tona after they had cleaned her up. She wiped the tears off her cheeks before she knelt by the bed.

“Tona, you were like a sister to me. I am really going to miss our late night talks and the way you made our kitchen duty fun.” Dallys bit her lip to keep from crying again. “I will miss you and I will remember you always.”

Dallys looked up and saw Borne in the door way. She went over and patted him on the chest. “I’m done. I’ll let you say goodbye now.” She walked out of the room leaving him standing there.

Borne walked over to the bed and looked at Tona. His face was expressionless but his eyes were full of grief. “Tona, I have always respected you. You were a soldier like me. You understood what duty and honor meant to me. I do not know if I shall ever have that again. Safe journey to your land of renewal.” Borne bowed his head and walked out of the room.

Izzie and Nellis stood in the hallway holding hands. They watched Borne pass them with his head down.

“Come in with me, Nellis.” Izzie pulled Nellis in by the hand.

Izzie went over and knelt by the bed. “Tona, you were an inspiration to me. You made me believe that I was capable of anything. You and I were only friends for a short time but I was honored to call you my friend.” Izzie looked up at Nellis.

Nellis knelt beside Izzie. “Tona, it’s not going to be the same around here without you. You were always a lot of fun and someone I could always count on. In my life… that is a rare thing.” Nellis glanced at Izzie. “I’m glad we got to be friends. Come on Izzie. I think Jace wants to be alone with her.”

Izzie nodded and let Nellis help her up. They walked out of the room and found Jace waiting. Izzie hugged Jace then she and Nellis went into the common room.

Jace walked to the door then hesitated. He wiped his face and went to the bed.

“Just like you to say that you love me then leave me to wonder what might have been.” Jace knelt down. “I have never been as close to anyone one as I was with you. There was something about you, Tona. Something that I could never put my finger on. I thought it was because you were an elf but now I guess I will never know exactly what it was. I did love you. Strong, beautiful, and fun. That was you and that is the way I will remember you.”

“Jace, they’re almost here.” Nellis called down the hall.

“I have to go. Rix caught them trying to escape. Wincet is going to make sure they pay for doing this to you.” Jace stood up and leaned over to kiss Tona on the lips one last time. “Goodbye my sweet.”

Jace walked to the door and closed it on his way out.

Rix was just landing when Jace went out to where everyone was waiting. The hatch opened and Rix came out of the ship.

“Was there any trouble?” Wincet asked.

“Not a bit. The Oldene captain had no idea that he had a murderer on board and as soon as he heard the words ‘Dark Army’, he gave them up without hesitation.” Rix said as he walked up to Wincet. “The older one has blood on the hem of his pants. We put them in the refrigeration compartment. There’s no lock on the inside. I’ve been meaning to fix that but I just haven’t got around to it. They were carrying a bag of currency with them. It doesn’t look like they planned on going back to their home world.”

“Keep the currency.” Wincet said. “Consider it your bounty.”

“Thank you. It will help my people a great deal. I will use it to pay for food and supplies.” Rix took a breath to steady his emotions. He turned to the open hatch. “Valn, bring the prisoners.”

Valn brought the two men to the hatch. They were both tied and gagged. Helis glared at Wincet defiantly while Barth hung his head and avoided looking at them.

Wincet pulled the gag off Helis. “Why did you kill her?”

“She was unsuitable. Barth told me that he was planning on giving her a divorce. That would bring shame to my family name and I could not have that.” Helis glared at Wincet. “The only way to end that marriage without disgrace was for her to die.”

Wincet looked at Barth. “Did he know what you planned to do when you came here?”

“No.” Helis glared at Barth. “He was ready to give her a divorce. He didn’t realize what that would do to our standing. He is weak that is why he could not control her. I had to put an end to it for him.”

“You son of a bitch!” Jace started to lunge forward but Borne and Nellis held him back.

Wincet looked over his shoulder at Jace. “Nellis, you and Borne take Jace inside. The rest of you go with them.”

“Wincet?” Nellis hesitated.

“It will be fine. Go now.” Wincet waved them away.

Everyone left Wincet with the two elves and went inside.

“I was really sorry to hear about this.” Rix looked at them. “Tona was a fine woman.”

Valn nodded. “You have our condolences.”

“Thank you.” Dallys sighed. “One of us needs to go see what Wincet is doing. I don’t like him being alone with those two.”

“I will go.” Borne didn’t wait for anyone to object he went out where he had left Wincet but he wasn’t there. Borne looked toward the Traveler’s Bridge and saw a portal open. He walked over to see what was going on.

“I refuse to go through that. I have no idea where it will take me.” Helis struggled against Wincet’s grip on his arm.

Borne grabbed Helis by the arm and started to drag him to the portal.

“Borne, you should go inside.” Wincet said. “I will handle this.”

“No. She was my friend.” Borne pushed Helis through the portal then turned to face Wincet. Borne pointed to Barth. “Do you want him to go as well?”

“No.” Wincet shook his head and closed the portal. “He will have to come with us to Tolkarian and explain what happened to Tona’s parents. Keep him here and watch him closely. I will get the others ready to leave for Tona’s home world.”

Borne nodded and held Barth by the arm as Wincet walked off.

“He sent my father somewhere. Do you know where he sent him?” Barth asked.

“No.” Borne squeezed Barth’s arm. “Silence.”

Barth winced and complied.

Thirty minutes later a portal opened on Tolkarian, Wincet led them through into the same garden that Tona had stepped into just a few weeks ago.

Manse greeted them. He was dressed in all white as was the custom for grieving. He walked over to the litter carrying Tona’s body. He glanced at Jace and Nellis then lifted the thin veil and looked at Tona’s face. “Thank you for bringing her home.”

“I believe that is what she would want.” Wincet glanced back at Borne holding on to Barth. “Helis was the one that took your daughter from you. I have dealt with him. You may do what you wish with him.”

“I will deal with him shortly.” Manse looked up at the sky. “We need to perform the ritual before the sun moves too far in the sky. It must be at its peak to be effective. Come this way.”

Manse led them up a mountain path to the glass and stone temple of Tolkar. He stood by the altar where Tona’s mother, Stara was waiting. “Please put her here. Manse pointed to the altar.”

Jace and Nellis lifted the litter and put her on the altar. They backed away. Manse started to say a spell to summon the winds of time then a beam of light came through the crystal at top of the temple. It slowly moved from one end of the altar to the other. It turned Tona’s body into a fine ash that started to blow away in the soft swirling breeze.

Manse and Stara watched as the breeze took their daughter away from them. Stara let out a sob and Manse comforted her by putting his arm around her.

Wincet and the others were silent. Izzie and Nellis held hands. Dallys leaned her head on Jace’s arm. Borne was still holding on to Barth.

When all of the ash was gone, Manse turned to them. He pulled a ornate dagger from under his tunic and walked up to Barth.

“Wait! I didn’t know he was going to kill her. Please!” Barth pleaded.

“You didn’t protect her either.” Manse plunged the dagger into Barth and twisted it.

Barth gasped and fell to the ground, choking on his blood until he died.

“Now she is avenged.” Manse stepped to Wincet. “What did you do to Helis?”

“I sent him to a planet where he will die a slow and painful death from radiation and starvation.” Wincet said. “I wanted him to suffer for taking the life of such a magnificent woman as Tona.”

Manse nodded. “Thank you. Thank you all for caring for our daughter. it is time for us to grieve in private.”

Wincet nodded. He turned and led the others back to the garden. He conjured the portal to send them back home. He watched as everyone stepped through but Jace.

“You sent him to Exalta?” Jace asked.

“Yes. He will suffer for a few days before the radiation or hunger kills him.” Wincet put his hand on Jace’s arm. “Should I have killed him quickly like Manse killed Barth?”

“No.” Jace shook his head. “Tona would have made Helis suffer if he had killed one of us.”

“I believe she would have.” Wincet patted Jace’s arm. “Let’s go home. We have to plan our next mission.”

Jace nodded and they both stepped through the portal to Centra.

Nellis walked down the hall to his room he noticed that Jace had left his door open so he decided to stop and see if Jace wanted to play some cards. He knocked on the open door and smiled as Jace looked up from the bed where he was sitting.

“Hey Jace! Do you want to play some cards?” Nellis realized that Jace seemed out of sorts. “What’s up? You seem down.”

"It’s nothing.” Jace put something in his pocket. “I was just thinking about my mum.”

Nellis pulled over a chair. “You were close with your mum?”

“Yes. We were all each other had after my dad died. He was a police inspector like me. He died saving someone. I guess I wanted to be like him.”

“At least you knew who your dad was. My Mother hadn’t a clue. She was a bit of a free spirit, I think you would say. She had several boyfriends all at the same time and she liked to have a good time.” Nellis frowned and looked sad for a moment. “She was killed by one of her boyfriend’s in a jealous rage when I was in high school. Izzie was there for me. I think that’s when we started up.”

“My mum was a good woman. Never drank or had a lot of men friends. I was her world.” Jace smiled. “Dallys and I were talking about our homes recently. It got me thinking about her.”

“What did you put in your pocket when I came in?” Nellis asked. “Was it a picture of her? Can I see it?”

Jace reached into his pocket and brought out a ring. “No. It’s the family ring. Every first born son has put it on his bride’s finger on their wedding day for generations. She was the last to wear it.”

Nellis looked at it and shrugged. “So you give it to the one you bond with and follow tradition.”

“I can’t because she is going to marry someone else.” Jace sighed. “I never even got to tell her how I feel. I was stupid to think she would have any feelings for me.”

“I thought you said you didn’t leave anyone behind on Terra.” Nellis was starting to get worried about Jace.

“She was never on Earth.” Jace looked at the ring one last time then he shoved it in his pocket. “Now I can never tell her how I feel.”

Nellis realized who Jace was talking about. “Tona? You are in love with Tona. Are you out of your mind? She’s an elf and she’s a dangerous one at that.”

“I know that.” Jace pulled a pillow into his lap. “I’m so stupid.”

“I was going with crazy but I can get with that too.” Nellis sighed. “She‘s bringing her husband here after the wedding. Are you going to be okay with that?”

“I suppose I shall have to be.” Jace hugged the pillow. “Nellis, you can’t tell the others and especially not Izzie. All of the women here are close and they tell each other everything.”

“So I’ve noticed.” Nellis rubbed his chin. “Izzie never really had a lot of friends so I have no idea how that happened.”

“They’re women. It’s in their nature to travel in packs.” Jace shrugged.

Nellis frowned. “It doesn’t bode well for us, does it?”

“Not a bit.” Jace leaned his chin on the pillow. “I’m just going to hide out in here until she leaves.”

“Sounds like a firm plan.” Nellis looked toward the door. “But I think she has other ideas.”

“What?” Jace sat up and looked at the door.

“She’s coming. I better go.” Nellis smiled and left the room.

Jace looked in the mirror and checked his hair. “What is she coming down to this end of the hall for anyway?”

Tona knocked on the open door. “Jace, I wanted to speak to you before I go.  May I come in?”

“Of course.” Jace motioned to the chair Nellis had vacated. “Have a seat. What did you want to talk about?”

Tona sat down. “I wanted you to know that I’m going to be okay. I know you are worried about me going home and getting married to a stranger.” Tona hesitated then she decided to tell him the truth. “Jace, if I don’t marry Barth then my parents will be arrested for stealing. They kept the money from the marriage contract that they signed before I left. I’m doing this for them.”

“Why are you telling me this?” Jace asked. “Why not Wincet or Dallys?”

“I’ve already told Wincet and he tried to give me money to pay Barth off. I refused it because I have my own money. Besides, I tried to pay him off myself but he won’t take it.”  Tona hesitated. “I’m telling you this because I thought we were getting close and I didn’t want you to think that I didn’t care about you.”

Jace nodded. “I understand and I care for you too. I will do whatever you need me to do. Tona, if there is any way to get out of this for you, please try.”

Tona smiled. “I thought about killing Barth after I bring him here but you know how Wincet frowns on that sort of thing.”

Jace shook his head and sighed. “That’s true. He doesn’t like us killing people at all. It makes him rather cross.”

“I better go finish packing.” Tona looked at the door. “You can come back in, Nellis. I know you’re out there. I can hear you giggle. Izzie says he’s always been a sneak.”

“I am not a sneak.” Nellis peeked into the doorway. “Are you two going to kiss or something because I can just wait out here until you’re finished?”

“No need.” Tona stood up and went over to Jace. She gave him a kiss on the cheek. “Still friends?”

“Yes. Always.” Jace smiled.

“Good.” Tona turned to walk out. She punched Nellis on the arm. “Izzie just arrived and I am going to tell her that you were sneaking around in the hallway and eavesdropping.”

“She’ll probably just laugh.” Nellis rubbed his arm. He watched Tona go down the hall for a minute then came into Jace’s room. “That went well. I guess she wasn’t as clueless as you thought.”

“Shut up Nellis.” Jace pulled the pillow back into his lap and hugged it. “I want to be alone. Do you mind?”

“No. I should go find Izzie anyway.” Nellis got up and patted Jace on the shoulder. “Who knows maybe we’ll like this guy.”

Jace sighed and put his face in the pillow. “Go!”

“I’m just saying.” Nellis walked out of the room and closed the door. He headed down to the other end of the hallway where the women had their rooms.

Two hours later, Tona stepped through the portal onto Tolkarian. Barth was there waiting for her.

“You are Tona?” Barth asked.

“Yes. You must be Barth. My mother said you would be the one to greet me.” Tona smiled.

“Hmph!” Barth looked her up and down. “Your hair is too short and you are dressed like a man but I suppose you will do. Come. My parents are waiting to meet you.”

Tona rolled her eyes as soon as he turned and followed him into a well-kept garden. Her parents along with another older couple were sitting at a table in the middle of a courtyard.

Tona’s mother Stara smiled at her daughter. “There you are. I told them you would come.” She stood up as Tona approached and hugged her. She whispered in Tona’s ear. “You should have stayed where you were. We would have been alright.”

Tona pulled back and smiled. “It’s good to see you, Mother, and you, Father.”

Tona’s father, Manse stood up and hugged her. “You look well.”

“Really? Because she isn’t what I expected.” Barth said. “I waited all this time for a wife and I get a… a… whatever she is. She is not the way you described her during the negotiations.”

“That was many years ago. I am a warrior now.” Tona turned and looked at Barth. “It is a respectable vocation.”

“For a man but not for a woman.” The other man at the table spoke up. “She is not as you said. Our women are to serve us and make our homes not go to war.”

“Helis, we raised her to be independent and self-reliant.” Manse responded. “I did not force my child to be invisible to the world. I wanted her to find her place in it.”

“Well that will all change once we are married.” Barth gave Tona a dismissive look.

“Oh no! The agreement was that you come back with me to Centra. You will hold to it.” Tona stepped up to Barth.

“If I refuse?” Barth challenged her.

“Then I will leave and not come back.” Tona glared at him. “I have obligations on Centra that are more important than being your wife.”

“Nothing is more important than being my wife to you now.” Barth met her glare with one of his own. “You are mine and you will do as I say.”

Tona laughed. “I will do as I please unless; you wish to try to force me to do otherwise. In which case, I will have to make my point to you with one of my blades. It will be a very bloody discussion. You can be sure of that.”

Barth raised his hand to slap her and Tona grabbed it and twisted it behind him as she shoved him down on the table.

“Helis, this wasn’t a good idea.” Barth’s mother Patra pulled on her husband’s sleeve. “She is hurting him!”

“Silence!” Helis pushed away her hand. “He is a grown man. He must learn to handle his wife by himself.”

“Tona!” Manse grabbed her by the shoulder. “I think he sees the point. Now let him go.”

Tona released Barth and stepped back. “I pray that is so, Father. Maybe,he is beginning to regret not taking the currency I offered him.”

“I need a wife not more currency.” Barth straightened his clothes. “I will see you in the morning for the ritual.” He turned to Manse. “See that she is on time and properly attired.”

Barth’s parents walked with him out of the garden.

“That could have gone better.” Manse looked at his daughter. “If you must rough him up, please, do it in private from now on.”

Tona chuckled. “I will try, Father. I promise.”

“Tona, you need to calm down. Barth is a very powerful man.” Stara warned her. “You should just do as he says and not be any trouble. You and I could see each other every day if you stayed here with him.”

"Mother, I would love to stay here with you and see you every day but I am part of something special.” Tona smiled gently at her mother. “We are called the Dark Army and we help people around the universe. It’s a noble calling and I won’t give it up to be some invisible slave to that buffoon.”

“You must watch your temper with him. He could have you beaten for not obeying him.” Manse warned her. That law is still on the books and no one seems in a rush to repeal it.”

“I would love to see him try it.” Tona said defiantly. “I would make him regret it.”

“Come inside I have the perfect gown for you to wear on your wedding day. I made it myself.”  Stara pulled Tona inside.

“Mother, all we do is light a candle and sign a piece of paper. It’s not more special than any other day.” Tona sighed in annoyance. “It’s not like we are royal and he wants the marriage bed witnessed because that will not be happening.”

“Tona, he will be your husband.” Stara looked shocked. “He will expect his rights.”

“He can expect them but that doesn’t mean he will get them.” Tona scowled.

“Humor your mother. Wear the dress.” Manse said as he followed them inside.

Tona looked over her shoulder at her father and sighed.

The next morning as the sun shone into the ancient temple Tona and Barth were married. It was quick and simple. The words were spoken by the priestess, a candle was lit, and the contract was signed.

Barth took Tona’s hand. “Now you must perform your duty to me. I expect you to be a willing participant in our first joining.”

“No!” Tona pulled her hand away from him. “I married you today and that is all you will be getting. If you want a release, go do it yourself.”

Barth’s parents looked shocked. Manse dipped his head down so that they wouldn’t see him smiling. Stara glanced around at the others nervously.

I will be leaving tomorrow at sunrise. I see no reason to stay the time that I had planned.” Tona told them all. She turned to Barth. “If you’re coming to Centra, be where the portal opened before. I’m going to spend some time with my parents before I leave.” She put her arm around her mother and steered her out of the temple. “Come along mother. Tell me all about your garden this year.”

Manse glance at them then turned to Barth. “If I were you I wouldn’t bother to show up. My daughter hasn’t been knitting for the last few years. She has been working as a mercenary. If you anger her she might just kill you. If she doesn’t then her friends just might on her behalf.” Manse left the temple and caught up with Tona and his wife.

Barth stood there not sure of what to do until Helis grabbed him by the arm.

“Go get your wife and make her submit.” Helis pushed him towards the door. “She obviously needs to be taught her place.”

“I know you’re right, Father, but I really don’t want make things worse.” Barth said. “Let her calm down tonight. I will wait until the morning to show her who is in control. She won’t be leaving this world any time soon.”

The next morning Tona went to where the portal opened and looked around. “Please see me, Wincet. I know you’re watching. I want to come back now.”

The portal opened and Tona was about to step through when Barth walked up.

“Where do you think you’re going?” Barth folded his arms across his chest. “You are my wife and you are going to stay here by my side and fulfil your duties to me from this moment on.”

Tona looked at the portal then at Barth. “Fine! You want me to be by your side then I shall be.” Tona grabbed him by the arm and pulled him to the portal. “But we will be on living on Centra, not here.” Tona shoved Barth through the portal then stepped through.

On Centra, it was a cold snowy winter night. The stars were hidden by the snow clouds and there was a brisk breeze.
Wincet has been standing on the travelers bridge waiting for Tona when Barth landed face down in the snow at his feet.

Tona pointed at Barth. “Wincet that excuse for an elf is my husband. Would you mind terribly if I asked you to turn him into something that I can squish under my heel?”

Wincet scowled. “That bad?”

“Worse. He’s going to need his own room because he sure as hell isn’t staying in mine. I believe there may be room in the shed next to Nellis’ motorcycle.” Tona walked down the Traveler’s Bridge to the living quarters.

Barth looked up at the sorcerer. “Who are you?”

Wincet reached down and pulled the elf to his feet. “I am Wincet. I command the Dark Army. You are Barth?”

“Yes.” Barth brushed the snow off his clothes.

“Hmph!” Wincet looked him up and down. “You’re not at all what I expected Tona’s husband to be. You’re not even used to working with your hands it seems. They’re soft and not calloused. That will change soon enough. We all share the upkeep of this place.” Wincet started to walk away. “Follow me. There is a room next to Borne’s you can take until your wife says otherwise.”

“My wife and I require a private suite of rooms.” Barth said as he followed the sorcerer.

Wincet laughed and kept walking.

“I don’t understand. What is so humorous about that?” Barth frowned and started walking.

“I wouldn’t want to be alone with her when she’s in the state she’s in.” Wincet laughed again. “You might just wake up dead.”

Barth blinked and shook his head. “She is my wife and she will do as she is told.”

Wincet looked over his shoulder and shook his head. He stopped and looked at Barth with pity in his eyes. “I can’t even get her to do what I tell her to do sometimes and she likes me. You have no idea of what she is capable of, do you?”

“Cooking. Cleaning. Laundry.” Barth shrugged.

“Fighting, killing, and bomb making is more like it.” Wincet started walking again. “However, you will be expected to help with the cooking and cleaning now that you live here. We all do our own laundry.”

When Wincet and Barth walked into the common room, everyone was waiting for them. They were all standing aggressively with intimidating looks on their faces.

“So this is the husband?” Nellis squinted at Barth. “He’s short. He looks more like an imp than an elf. Can you spin straw into gold like the story Jace told us one night? Jace says that all imps can do that. Are you sure your name isn’t Rumpelstiltskin?”

Izzie buried her face in Nellis’ arm to keep from laughing.

“Borne show him to the room next to yours. He can stay there for now.” Wincet looked at Tona and winked.

“I thought I said to put him in the shed.” Tona pulled her dagger out of her boot and looked at it.

“Oh no! Not with my motorcycle! She deserves a better roommate than him.” Nellis pointed at Barth. “He looks a little hinky to me. What do you think Jace?”

“Tona doesn’t seem to like him.” Jace frowned. “Maybe he is a little hinky as you say. He looks like his mummy pampered him. Wouldn’t you agree, Borne?”

Borne nodded. “He shows no signs of manual labor. There are no callouses on his hands and his posture is not stooped or altered in any way.”

“Well, she can’t kill him. We don’t have any space in the garden to bury him. The turnips would taste off.” Dallys sighed. “Izzie?”

“Wincet could send his body into space through a portal. That would solve that problem.” Izzie grinned.

Tona put her dagger back in her boot. “He can live as long as he stops being an ass. Besides we could use a housekeeper and cook.”

“Has everyone finished?” Wincet asked. “There is something that I need you all to do. Isadora, we will need you as well. Borne, show him to his room then come back for the briefing. After you settle in Barth, we could use some sandwiches.”

“Welcome home, husband.” Tona smirked.

Borne grabbed Barth by the arm and led him down to the men’s end of the hallway in the living quarters.

“Why are you all against me?” Barth asked.

“Tona is well respected.” Borne told him. “We will not allow her to be treated the way you expect to treat her. It would be best if you kept quiet and let us do our work.”

“You mean act like some invisible servant?” Barth was stunned at the thought.

“Yes.” Borne stopped in front of a door and opened it. “This is your room.” He walked off leaving Barth standing there speechless.

In the common room, everyone looked at Tona with sympathy.

Wincet reached out and put his arm around her shoulders. “Are you alright my dear?”

“No. Maybe.” Tona shook her head. “I thought I could deal with a demon like him but I was wrong, oh so wrong. It’s like he has his hands gripping my soul and they’re only going to get tighter until he leaves or I kill him.”

“We are all here for you.” Jace said. “We are all your friends.”

“Thank you.” Tona smiled at them all. “That means everything to me. Let’s hear about the mission, Wincet.”

Wincet nodded and started to lay out the plan for the next mission.

Episode 9
Once they go through the portal, Dallys’ question was answered. There were a few inches of snow covering everything.

Wincet looked over the cart. “Did you get everything on the lists?”

“I double checked while we waited for you to open the portal. Can we get out of the cold?” Dallys asked as she shivered. “I’m freezing.”

“Yes. Yes.” Wincet lead them back down the Traveler’s Bridge to the living quarters.

Tona was waiting in the meeting room when they arrived. “Nellis, I have something for you.” She held out a note.

Nellis took the note and read it. He laughed. “So that’s where you were. You were helping Izzie.”

“Yes and no. It was just a quick thing.” Tona looked at Wincet. “Should we tell them now?”

Wincet nodded. “You should do it.”

“I’m going home but it’s just for a few weeks. Izzie is coming to cover for me. When this thing I have to do is over, I will be coming back.” Tona glanced at Wincet. “With my husband.”

“You never mentioned a fiancé.” Dallys raised an eyebrow at her.

“It’s an arranged marriage.” Tona shrugged. “It was delayed when I left to be a mercenary but I just recently decided to go through with it. He is still willing to do it.”

“You’re going to have to tell me everything now. Can you get us invitations to the wedding?” Dallys pulled Tona by the arm down the hall to their rooms.

“Looks like you’re next, kitten boy.” Jace slapped Nellis on the shoulder.

Nellis blinked then grinned. “It will be good to have Izzie around for a while. Maybe she can make this her home base too.”

“We should have a little celebration.” Wincet grinned. “I have a batch or bang bang wine all ready to drink. Maybe the three of you can whip up something nice for dinner.”

“Uh.” Nellis shifted on his feet. “Wincet. I need to talk to you about something. We may have to put the celebration on hold until tomorrow.”

“Why?” Wincet gave Nellis a suspicious look.

“I literally bumped into an Exaltanese shifter. He told me that there are forty survivors of the destruction of Exalta. They’re on a moon of a gas giant in the Gax system. He wanted to know who destroyed his planet.” Nellis raised his hands in the air. “I didn’t tell him that I knew but I told him we could help him find out. I said I had to talk to you first.”

“What does he want to do? Hunt Trystana down and then what? Kill her?” Wincet gave Nellis a hard look. “I cannot condone killing. You shouldn’t have told him we will help him.”

“I agree.” Jace folded his arms and looked at Nellis.

“At least, I didn’t tell him who it was.” Nellis rubbed his head. “He said she needs to be brought to justice. I agree with that. Can’t we just get her and take her to them and let them sort it out?”

“Do you remember what happened when you went there to get the Star Breaker Wand?” Wincet looked at them. “People were killed.”

“Tona hasn’t killed anyone since then and we can be more careful this time.” Nellis insisted. “We have learned to work together and we can give the people that died on Exalta some peace.”

Wincet sighed. “We need to put it to a vote. Borne go get Tona and Dallys.”

Borne hurried down the corridor to their rooms and brought them back.

“Borne says we are going to take a vote on something.” Tona looked at the others as she and Dallys came in.

“Nellis wants to give Trystana to the survivors of Exalta for punishment.” Jace leaned against the table.

“I vote yes.” Tona sat down in a chair.

Dallys sighed. “What will they do to her?”

“We don’t know that but I would say they would probably kill her.” Jace looked at Nellis. “Their resources are limited and I don’t think they want to hold her as a prisoner.”

Dallys bit her lip. “I vote yes.”

“Dallys!?” Jace looked shocked.

“I vote yes.” Nellis said as he looked at the others.

Borne had been silent through all this. He finally spoke up. “I vote yes.”

“So the majority wants to turn her over to the Exaltanse.” Wincet nodded. “I will send you with our decision. Help them capture her but then I want you to come back. Let them do what they are going to do.”

“Rix said he will be back to his people within four hours. We should wait until he has had a chance to talk with his leaders.” Nellis suggested.

“Agreed. That is plenty of time to prepare a celebratory meal for Tona’s marriage.” Wincet looked at jace and Nellis. “I believe you two are on for cooking today.”

Jace nodded “Come on Nellis.”

Nellis followed Jace into the kitchen.

In less than an hour, everyone sat around the table eating a simple meal and drinking wine.

“What is he like, Tona? Is he a mercenary like you?” Jace asked.

“No he’s a scholar.” Tona pushed her plate back. “He doesn’t know anything about weapons. I suppose he could help Wincet when we go off world.”

“I would be happy for the help.” Wincet smiled. “It’s a shame we won’t be at your wedding. I haven’t been to an elven joining before.”

Tona shook her head. “His family is not welcoming to other races. They are barely welcoming to me.”

“Are you okay?” Jace asked Tona. “You don’t seem all that happy about getting married.”

“I’m happy. I’m doing what I should have done years ago.” Tona flashed a smile. “I will learn to love him in time.”

“Unless, he’s a bore then we can just leave him on a planet somewhere for you.” Nellis winked at her.

“I may take you up on that.” Tona laughed nervously.

Wincet looked over at the clock. “Well, we need to get back to work. You have a meeting to get to. Gather your things and I will meet you on the Traveler’s Bridge.”

In a few minutes everyone was on the bridge waiting for Wincet.

Jace looked down at Nellis’ boots and his orange and black socks. “Nice socks. Where did they come from?”

“Izzie bought them for me on my birthday before I came here.” Nellis looked down at his feet. “I found them in my bag when I came back from Caspire. She must have packed them.”

“Very snazzy.” Jace chuckled.

Borne looked down at Nellis’ feet with a frown.

“They’re hideous but I’m cold.” Nellis explained.

Tona looked down at Nellis’ feet and laughed. “Cute!”

Wincet looked at them then went to make the portal. “Come right back after your meeting and I will send you to Baikus.”

When the portal opened on the moon Talvan and Rix stepped back. Neither had seen anything like it before.

“Are you sure these people can be trusted, Rix?” Talvan shaded his eyes from the glow of the portal. “They are outsiders.”

“Yes. I’m sure.” Rix looked at the older man. “The fact that they have kept their word to me proves that they are willing to help us. That’s enough for me.”

Nellis and the others stepped through the portal and walked over to where they saw Rix and Talvan standing.

“Hello Grandfather.” Nellis bowed his head. “I’m Nellis and these are my friends. We have some information to tell you and then we will help you bring the destroyer of your world to justice.”

“You are from Caspire. You are a shifter like us but you associate with these lower beings. He isn’t even a creature. He’s a machine.” Talvan looked confused. “Why is that?”

Borne blinked but didn’t say anything. He was used to being singled out because he was an android.

Nellis shifted on his feel and looked uncomfortable.

“Lower beings?” Tona stepped forward but Jace pulled her back and shook his head.

“Grandfather, these people are equals. They help others in need and they are here to help us.” Rix whispered in the old man’s ear. He turned to the group. “Please forgive Talvan. He has lived a sheltered life in the monastery. What can you tell us about the person who destroyed our home world?”

“We came to tell you that we know who was responsible for the destruction of your world.” Jace looked at the older man. “We took the Star Breaker Wand from her so that she couldn’t use it again.”

“Star Breaker Wand? That’s a myth.” Rix looked at Nellis. “Isn’t it?”

“It’s very real.” Nellis sighed. “We have now tucked away  in a safe place. The person that used it is Trystana of Baikus. She took it from the Metalis Alliance.”

“I remember that name.” Rix looked at Talvan. “She came to the Great Council claiming to be a priestess of great power. She wanted us to pay her tribute. The Great Council refused to pay her. That was several years ago. My parents laughed about her claim. They thought she was stupid to try anything so foolish on the Exaltanese.”

“I was there. I was attending Councilor Marlken.” Talvan shook his head as he remembered that day. “She had some magick but when Marlken challenged her she was no match for him. He injured her severely and her men had to carry her back to her ship.”

“Then that is the why, who, and the how of it.” Rix took a breath. “Can you help bring her to justice?”

Tona looked at them both. “We are here to help you capture Trystana. Just one thing, we should only bring one or two of your men. There’s no need to send more than that.”

“I will go.” Rix looked at Tona. “There is no need for anyone else. I lost all that was my heart that day. I need to see this through.”

Talvan nodded. “Go with them and bring this murderer back to us. We will have justice and give peace and honor to all that perished that day.”

“What is the plan?” Rix asked.

“We go in and take her from her fortress.” Tona shrugged. “Then we bring her here to you.”

“Shouldn’t we make a plan?” Rix asked.

“Just get your gear.” Nellis smiled. “We already know the layout of her fortress. We have been there once already.”

“I have all that I need on my person. When can we leave?” Rix asked.

“As soon as the portal is reopened, we will go to Centra and from there Baikus.” Jace told him.

Dallys turned and walked back to where the portal opened before. As soon as she got close another opened. She turned and looked at the others. “Shall we go?”

“How does your leader know when to create the portal?” Rix asked as he walked with Nellis.

“He watches for us with his scrying bowl.” Dallys smiled.

Nellis and Jace looked at each other and shrugged.

The Dark Army along with Rix stepped onto the snow covered Traveler’s Bridge where Wincet was waiting.

“Hello I’m Rix and you must be their leader.” Rix extended his hand to Wincet. “Thank you for your help.”

“I am Wincet and we are here to help those in need.” Wincet took Rix’s hand and shook it. “Now get ready and I will conjure the portal to Baikus”

Everyone came to stand where Wincet was standing. Wincet opened the portal to Baikus. He looked directly at Tona. “Please be careful this time.”

Tona nodded. She followed the rest of the group into the portal.

As soon as they stepped through the portal on Baikus, they took cover in the trees.

“Dallys, Nellis, and Rix, you are up first. Get in and get a look around then come back. We’ll come in and grab her when you find her.” Tona told him.

Dallys became a point of light and took off.

Nellis turned into a mouse and scampered off.

Rix looked at the others then shifted into a hummingbird.

“That was an interesting choice.” Jace squinted as he followed Rix with his eyes.

“Obviously, he hasn’t used his shifting for nefarious deeds like Nellis.” Tona smirked. “I suppose his people aren’t natural born thieves like Nellis.”

“Nellis is unique. Izzie is not a thief and she uses her shapeshifting abilities.” Borne reminded them.

Jace chuckled. “Nellis says she is a lot of fun when she plays shifties with him. I have a feeling I don’t really want to know what that entails.”

Tona grinned. “No, you really don’t.”

Dallys was the first one back. She changed back to normal before she spoke. “The place has been closed up. There are sheets over all the furniture and the shutters are locked. I had to let Nellis and Rix in. They should be back any moment.”

Nellis and Rix came walking towards them already in their humanoid form. They had an older man by the arms between them.

Borne, Jace, and Tona came out of cover and met them half way near the garden wall.

“We found the caretaker.” Nellis nodded toward the old man. “He was in a small house in back. He isn’t saying anything.”

“Oh really? I haven’t asked him my way yet.” Tona pulled a dagger from her boot and held it to the old man’s throat. “Where is Trystana?”

“She was taken.” The old man looked at the blade. “The man came in the night. He was wearing a uniform of the Metalis Alliance.”

“A human wearing a Metalis Alliance uniform? Borne, is that even possible?” Jace asked.

“Yes.” Borne confirmed. “There are a few humanoids in the ranks but I don’t know of any that would carry out a mission on their own.”

Tona backed the old man against the wall. “Where are the rest of the men? Where is Trystana? Tell me the truth this time.”

“I did. They have been gone for months. They were here but now they're gone.” The old man said. “The man came and took them. He came the last night of sadness. It was the time of mourning for the dead we found in the woods.” The old man struggled but Tona held him firmly against the garden wall. “He came in the night. It was all quiet then the door was open and the wind appeared, The candles blew and then they just disappeared.”

“Who was he?” Tona asked. “What was his name? Did you hear his name?”

“They called him Boc the Reaper.” The old man told them. “He’s a bounty hunter. Trystana was wanted by the Metalis alliance for stealing the Star Breaker from them. They saw the star explode and they knew it was her. So they came to take her away.”

“Then she’s dead.” Rix scratched his head. “The Metalis Alliance doesn’t put people in prison. They just kill them.”

“We’re sorry, Rix.” Dallys patted his arm.

“It just spares my people the trouble of doing it themselves.” Rix sighed. “I guess I should be thankful for that. I should be getting back I need to tell the others what we found out.”

“We need to get to the rendezvous point then Wincet will send you home when we get to the Traveler’s Bridge.” Nellis told him.

They all walked to the place they came into the forest and the portal opened. Rix looked around one last time before he walked through the portal.

Rix walked through the portal to the moon where his people were waiting.

“Did you not find her?” Talvan asked when he didn’t see anyone with Rix.

“The Metalis Alliance got to her first. She’s dead. She’s been dead for months.” Rix said to the crowd. “We may not have had the justice that we had hoped for but she has met her fate already. Let us mourn the dead and heal.

Talvan nodded. “While you were gone, Rix, we decided to name this moon Avia. It has now become out sanctuary similar to the one written about by the Scribes.”

“I like it.” Rix smiled. “It’s a perfect name for our new home.”

On a battle cruiser belonging to the Metalis Alliance. Trystana paced the floor of her cell. She had no idea why she was still alive. She should have been killed months ago. She knew she was going to die as soon as saw the uniform on the bounty hunter.

A commander walked up to the force field. “You failed to wipe out the Exaltanese. There are still some left. You failed your mission and you lost the Star Breaker. I would have killed you just for that but the General Tox wants you delivered to him alive. So I am keeping you alive against my better judgement. “

“I did as I was told.” Trystana walked toward the force field. “It wasn’t my fault that I lost the Star Breaker Wand. It was stolen when a group of mad men raided my fortress. They had a trained ursaur with them. They killed four of my men. We didn’t stand a chance against them. “

“Lies! I will let General Tox do what he likes with you. “The commander turned to walk away. I am sure whatever it is it will be unpleasant.  He is a very unpleasant man.”

“Please! Just leave me on some unknown planet and tell him I died in transit. “Trystana begged. “I know exactly what he has in mind for me. Please help me!”

The commander laughed as he walked down the corridor out of the cell block.

Trystana sank to the floor. She knew what was coming. General Tox would enjoy himself as he ripped her apart as slowly as possible.

Episode 8
Several months after the destruction of Exalta and its sun, a few dozen survivors gathered in a cavern on an unnamed moon to honor the home and the loved ones they lost.

The bird like creatures stood in groups with their heads down and wings limp at their sides. They were refugees on a moon with little to offer but air to breath and water to drink. Their hope was dwindling a little more each day that passed that their race would survive past the last of them now standing in the damp cavern

Talvan, the leader of the group, carried a worn book in his hands as he moved to the center of the cavern. He lit his candle from the fire in the center of the room and walked back to the others who came to form a circle around the fire. He touched his flame to the candle held by a woman holding on to the hand of her young son. She turned to her left and passed on the flame.

“Come now into the circle. Spread your wings, children. We are all that is left of a proud race. We are the Shifters of Exalta.” Talvan looked around. “It is up to us to restore the greatness of our people. We have that ability. It is our duty!”

“And what of revenge for the dead?” A voice called out from the back of the group. “Is that not our duty as well?”

“Revenge was never our way.” Talvan raised the book over his head. “It is written by the Scribes of Avia that those who would seek vengeance are lost and must be healed.”

“I am neither lost nor in need of healing, Grandfather.” The man belonging to the voice stepped forward. “My wife and my hatchlings were on our home world when they were burned alive by the sun being ripped to pieces in the sky above them. You say that we are the last hope to make our people great again. That I agree with but we have to seek justice for the dead so that they can rest in peace and with honor.”

“Rix please. Now is not the time to spread hate.” The woman reached out. “Antle would not want you to mourn her in that way.”

“Allam, you know nothing of what Antle would want.” Rix shook his head. “What Antle would want is for me to find the person responsible for this heinous act and bring them before the people that they wronged.”

“Rix, no one knows who that is.” Allam pulled her son closer. “There was no warning. Those of us in this place survived because we were not on our home world. We were out in the stars as our people have always been.”

“Then it is out to the stars I will return to find this evil and show it no mercy.” Rix turned to walk away then turned to “Allam. You have your son. I lost both of mine along with their sister and mother. When you have lost everything that was your heart then you will understand.”

Rix walked out of the cavern and headed for the cargo ship a few yards away.

“Wait! Take me with you!” A young man ran after him. “You can’t pilot that ship on your own.”

Rix sighed and turned around. “Valn, you can’t talk me out of my decision.”

“I don’t want to but our people will need supplies and food. You and I can find what we can as we search for this evil murderer and bring back food and supplies.” Valn opened his wings. “We must help our people. It is a priority.”

“Come along then and don’t make me regret this.” Rix turned and walked to his ship. “I shudder to think what your mother would have said if she had seen you talking it me.”

“There goes a nice boy who wants to do the right thing for his people.” Valn grinned as he followed Rix inside the ship.

“You mother thought I was trouble.” Rix sat in the pilot’s seat.

“That was because you used to steal apples from her shop.” Valn laughed. “Where do we start?”

“Kavel. There is an open market there. Someone is bound to know something and we can get food and supplies there too.” Rix grinned.

“Do you have currency?” Valn asked. “Because I don’t think that they are just going to give us food and supplies for nothing.”

“I raided the coffers of the First Prime when I went back to Exalta to see if there were survivors. I have plenty and if I need more I can just go back.” Rix told him.

Valn hesitated then asked what he wanted to know since the disaster that had taken their home world. “Rix, what did you see when you went back? Were there dead everywhere?”

“No.” Rix swallowed down his emotions. “The radiation from the sun exploding burned every living thing on the planet to ash. All that was left was destruction. We won’t ever be able to go back there. Even with a lead lined hazard suit, I was taking a risk going there.”

Valn fell silent as they took off from the planet.

On Centra, Jace stood at the side of the Travelers Bridge looking out over the water. He was so deep in thought that he didn’t see Dallys come up beside him.

The weather was getting colder now and the sky was full of slivery clouds. Both of them had heavy cloaks on but Dallys still shivered from the cold.

“I hope Kavel is warmer than here.” Dallys said mostly to herself.

“It’s always warm there.” Jace looked up at the sky. “It looks like it’s going to snow. I was beginning to wonder if this planet had more than one season.”

“Wincet says the snow can get knee deep at times. I have never seen more than a light dusting and a few flakes in the air.” Dallys shivered again under her cloak. “My planet is not usually very cold. I don’t like the cold.”

“My planet has all manner of weather from hot to freezing cold. It’s always changing.” Jace smiled. “That’s what I have always liked about it. You never get tired of it.”

“It sounds very interesting. I wonder if I will ever get to go there.” Dallys asked. “Do they have fae on your world?”

“No. We just have humans.” Jace smiled. “I don’t think I will ever see Earth again. It’s a good thing that I don’t have anyone back there to miss me.”

“No family?” Dallys turned to look up at Jace.

“No. They’re all dead.” Jace looked down at his hands on the railing. “My mum died of cancer just before I came here.”

“What’s cancer?” Dallys asked.

“It is a disease that wastes you away until there is nothing left to do but die.” Jace pulled the hood of his cloak up and turned around. “Where is everyone else?”

“Nellis and Borne were right behind me.” Dallys said just before she spotted them. “There they are.”

They walked up to where Jace and Dallys were standing.

Nellis handed Dallys a list. “You are in charge of the herbs. Jace and I are getting the rest and Borne is going to carry it all home.”

“Let’s get the shopping done so we can go back to saving the universe, shall we?” Jace walked over into the center of the bridge where a cart was waiting for them. “Where is Wincet?”

“I don’t know.” Nellis shrugged. He and Tona were in the workroom when he gave me the list. “I think we will have a mission waiting when we get back.”

“Good.” Jace nodded. “I don’t like to sit and do nothing for too long.”

“You’re starting to sound like Tona.” Dallys nudged Jace in the arm.

Jace shrugged. “I’m just an intergalactic man of mystery saving the universe one planet at a time.”

“Jace, you are so full of …” Nellis jumped when Wincet tapped him on the shoulder. “Wincet! Hey! I didn’t see you there.”

“Shall we get on with it?” Wincet walked into the center of the bridge and opened the portal. “Make sure you get everything on that list Dallys.”

“Isn’t Tona coming?” Jace asked.

“No I have something I want her to do for me.” Wincet grinned mischievously.

Jace shrugged and pushed the cart through the portal to Kavel. The others followed him through.

Once through the portal, they walked the short distance to the open market and split up and went to get food and supplies.

Borne decided to go with Jace and Nellis. They let him push the car while they stopped at one vendor then another.

They were nearly done when Nellis bumped into a cloaked figure.

“Excuse me. My fault.” Nellis waited for the figure to respond. “Did you hear me?”

“Yes.” The figure pulled back his hood and looked at Nellis. “You’re a Caspirian shifter, aren’t you?”

“Yes. Are you an Exaltanese shifter? I thought you were all killed in the explosion of your star. I’m Nellis by the way.”

“I’m Rix. How did you know about the loss of our home world? No one here seems to know.”

“We were watching as the star exploded. That is, my friends and I.” Nellis pointed to Jace and Borne. “We are a group of travelers that work to make the universe a better place. We had been discussing a mission when we saw the explosion. How many of you kind are left?”

“About forty.” Rix took a moment to regain control of his emotions. “We were scattered on various ships and outposts when our world was destroyed. Now we are gathered on a moon circling a gas giant in the Gax system.”

“Forty?” Nellis shook his head. “There were millions on your world. Will you be rebuilding on the moon?”

“I don’t know. It’s a harsh place.” Rix shrugged. “I’m here on Kavel to get supplies and some answers.”

“Answers?” Nellis asked. He knew he shouldn’t tell this man what he knew until he had spoken to Wincet. To tell Rix would serve no good purpose.

“The person responsible for the murder of my people needs to be brought before us to face the consequences on his actions.” Rix sighed. “It’s the only way to give peace to the dead now.”

Nellis nodded. “My friends and I might be able to help with that but you have to speak to our leader. He’s back at our base on Centra. You could come back with us and speak to him.”

“Thank you but I need to get everything we bought back to our people.” Rix pointed behind hip tp where several ships were sitting on the ground. “My copilot is loading the cargo ship now. How can I get in touch with you?”

Nellis thought for a moment. “How long will it take you to get back to the Gax system?”

“Four hours.” Rix told him.

“We should be done and back to Centra by then. I will speak to our leader and we will come to you. We travel by portal.” Nellis told him.

“That sounds quite handy.” Rix smiled.

“It can be.” Nellis grinned.

“Nellis, who is your friend?” Jace asked. He looked the creature up and down and frowned. It reminded him of an giant eagle.

“This is Rix. He is an Exaltanese shifter and Rix, this is Jace and the one with the cart is Borne.” Nellis looked around and spotted Dallys haggling with a spice merchant. He pointed her out to Rix. “That fae in the blue cloak is Dallys. We are one short today. She had an errand to run for our leader.”

“So many different races and you are all working together. That’s incredible.” Rix was amazed.

Valn ran up to Rix. “We’re all loaded. We should get back now.”

“This is Valn my copilot.” Rix glanced back at Valn. “We had better go. I hope to see you all very soon.”

Rix and Valn turned and went back to their ship and headed back to the Gax system.

“Nellis, what did you say to him?” Jace asked.

“I told him that I would talk to Wincet and see if we could help them find the person that destroyed their world.” Nellis saw the hard look on Jace’s face.” I didn’t tell him that we knew who did it. If I had, he would have just rushed off and got himself in trouble. There are only forty of his kind left I don’t want to be responsible for the death of another.”

“That was a very logical decision.” Borne said. “We need one more thing and then we can go. We need cabbage”

“There’s some down there.” Jace pointed to the cart. “You and I can go, Borne. Nellis can stay here with the cart and try to stay out of trouble.”

Just then, Dallys walked up and put her bag on the cart. “There! I am done. I like it better when Tona comes. She can get a good price without haggling so much. I think they are a little afraid of her.”

“We are all a little afraid of her at times. We’ll be right back.” Jace said then walked to the merchant with Borne.

“Jace seems annoyed with you. What did you do?” Dallys asked.

“I just made a new friend and promised to talk to Wincet on his behalf.” Nellis looked over the cart. “I can’t believe we go through so much in just a few months.”

“I didn’t recognize his race what is he?” Dallys asked.

“He is an Exaltanese shifter.” Nellis pulled at the bag of turnips. “Do you Remember the sun we saw blow up? It destroyed his planet. There are only forty of them left now. They are living on a moon in the Gax system.”

“Did you tell them about Trystana?” Dallys asked.

“No. I thought I had better talk to Wincet first.” Nellis looked over at Jace and Borne who were walking their way. “It looks like we are done.”

When Borne and Jace reached them, Borne put the cabbage on the cart and started to push the cart to the rendezvous point.

“Let’s go.” Dallys started walking in the direction Borne took. “I wonder if it has started to snow yet.”

Jace and Nellis looked at each other then followed her.

Wincet came down the corridor where the men had their rooms. He knocked on Jace’s and then Nellis’ doors.

Both of them opened the door and looked out then at each other. It wasn’t like Wincet to come to their rooms in the middle of the day.

“Wincet, is there something wrong?” Jace asked.

“I fear there is.” Wincet scowled. “Borne’s power cell is beginning to degrade and he will need to have it replaced. I need to send you both with him to Kavel to get one.”

“Kavel?” Jace frowned. “Shouldn’t we just steal one from a supply cupboard on Greeda?

Nellis laughed. “You and I have been spending far too much time together, my friend. Besides, there may not be anything left on Greeda to steal. Borne played us the order the Metalis Alliance gave to abandon the base. They probably took everything they could when they left.”

Jace looked annoyed. “We need to know what it looks like before we go.”

“Borne is going with you. He knows exactly what he needs.” Wincet looked at them both. “I will meet you at the Traveler’s Bridge in twenty minutes.”

“Wait! What if his power cell dies while we are on Kavel?” Jace asked. “There is no way Nellis and I can get him back here like that.”

“I just recharged the power cell but the charge won’t hold for long. That is why you must hurry.” Wincet turned and headed back down the corridor.

“I hope we find one. I’ve gotten rather fond of Borne.” Jace said as he watched Wincet turn the corner.

“We all have. Be had better hurry.” Nellis ducked back into his room and picked up his jacket and his weapons.

Jace went back in his room to grab his things too. He was coming out of his room just as Nellis was walking around the corner. “Hey! Nellis! Wait up!”

Jace and Nellis got to the Traveler’s Bridge before Wincet and Borne.

“I thought we were in a rush.” Jace pulled up his color against the wind.

“Maybe the charge didn’t hold and Wincet is trying it again.” Nellis said.

Wincet and Borne finally appeared at the end of the bridge and walked up to join the two men.

“Borne, you feeling alright?” Jace asked.

“Yes. I am functioning perfectly at the moment.” Borne said without a hint of worry. “But we must get the power cell or I will not be functioning at all. It is vital that I receive a new power cell.”

Wincet opened the portal to Kavel and Borne, Jace, and Nellis stepped through. They walked the short distance to the open market and looked around to find a tech vendor.

“Hey! There’s a tech merchant at the end of the row.” Jace pointed to the cart. “You and I can go, Borne. Nellis can stay here and keep an eye out for trouble.”

“Sure.” Nellis said. He stood near a tree and waited for them to come back. He didn’t have to wait long and when they did return it was empty handed.

“What’s wrong? Why didn’t you get the power cell?” Nellis asked Jace.

“The vender said that Borne can’t get a new power cell without a purchase slip signed by a commanding officer.” Jace frowned. “We tried to explain to the man that if he doesn’t get one soon, he’s going to shut off. He wasn’t very sympathetic.”

“How are we going to get him one of those?” Nellis thought for a moment. “We won’t be able to go to a base and get him one …. But we can just forge one.”

Jace looked at Nellis. “I’m not a forger. Are you?”

“No but I know one or two.” Nellis grinned. “Remember my drinking buddies on Caspire? One of them is a first class forger and he owes me money.”

“We can figure it out when we get back.” Jace said. “Let’s go back to the rendezvous point.”

They went back and waited a few minutes before a portal opened to take them home.

“Well?” Wincet asked when they stepped through the portal.

“We didn’t get the power cell. Borne needs a purchase slip.” Nellis told him.

Wincet frowned. “I was hoping you wouldn’t have any trouble. Don’t worry Borne. We can try to keep recharging the one you have until we can come up with a batter plan.”

“Nellis said he has a friend that can forge Borne a purchase slip.” Jace spoke up.

“He owes me money too.” Nellis grinned. “He’s going to need to see one though to go by.”

“I have one for a circuit card. It was in my pack when I came here,” Borne said. “It’s already been used. He will just have to delete the stamp. I will also have to give him the part number.”

“That will work.” Nellis said.

Wincet frowned. “That may be the only way we can get it but I don’t like it at all. It’s risky.”

“Jenis owes nearly twenty talons. He won’t say anything to anybody after I forgive a debt like that,” Nellis grinned. “I’ll go with you back to your room to get it and all the info then I need to get to Caspire.”

Wincet nodded. “Borne, stay off your feet until Nellis comes back to save your power. Once we have the purchase order, you can go back to Kavel to get the power cell.”

Borne nodded. “I will do what you ask. I do not want to go dark.”

Jace knew what going dark meant. He had heard Borne talk about it before. “It meant death for an android.”

“Borne, what do you say I keep you company until Nellis gets back?” Jace asked.

“I would like that, Jace.” Borne looked relieved or as relieved as an android can look.

Nellis was on his way to Caspire within the hour. He had everything he needed to forge a new purchase slip for Borne’s power cell.

Jace sat with Borne in his room and they looked out the window at the snow falling. “You know Borne, I never knew all of this was out here. I thought that my planet was the only one with life on it. But then again life comes in many different forms doesn’t it. Look at you. You’re an android and you’re alive.”

“I am a machine not a living being.” Borne corrected him.

“You are as much alive as I am and I know you are worried about going dark.” Jace sighed. “All life worries about dying, Borne and you aren’t alone in your fear. I wonder if I’m going to die out here one day. We do dangerous things you know.”

Borne nodded. “Jace, if I go dark, there is something I wish you to do.

“What is it Borne?” Jace asked.

“Don’t let anyone take me apart and use me for scrap metal.”

“I won’t.” Jace took a breath. “On my world, we bury our dead in boxes called coffins. We put a stone with their name on it where we bury them so we can talk to them or just leave the flowers. Would you like me to do that for you, Borne?”

“Yes I would. Thank you, Jace.” Borne looked out the window again.

The next morning Borne and Jace went with Wincet to bring Nellis back from Caspire.

“Did you get it?” Jace asked.

“Of course, I got it.” Nellis grinned. “Jenis was more than pleased to help and I only had to forgive half of his debt to get it done.”

Jace laughed. “You’re very good at that, aren’t you?”

“I had to be.” Nellis shrugged. “Are you ready to go, Borne?”

“Yes. I am ready.” Borne looked at Jace.

Wincet made a portal to Kavel and the trio stepped through. They went straight to the vendor to get the power cell.

“Hello there friend. I see that you are back. Do you have the proper paperwork this time?”

“Yes I do.” Boren handed the vendor the forged purchase slip.

The man glanced at it and put it on the table before he rummaged around until her found the power cell. “That will be twenty two tagnets.”

Jace looked in his pocket and pulled out twenty tagnets. “Nellis, I’m two short.”

Nellis searched his pockets and found one more. “I only have one. Can you give it to us for twenty one?”

“I have to make a profit. You understand?” The vendor shook his head and shrugged. “It’s twenty two or no part for your friend here. By the way, why are you not with a patrol, friend? I have never seen a solitary soldier before.”

“He is on loan to us.” Jace said. “Nellis, maybe you should show him what an ursaur looks like up close.”

“Sure thing.” Nellis grinned.

“Look, I don’t want any trouble. I’ll take twenty one and next time, get your parts somewhere else.” The vendor slid the box across the table.

Jace and Nellis put the money down on the table. Borne looked in the box to make sure it was the one he needed.

“This one had been discharged.” Borne looked at the vendor. “Do you not have one that is fully charged?”

“No. That’s the only one I have. Do you want it or not?”

Nellis picked up eleven tagnets from the table. “We are taking it for ten. Let’s go gentlemen.”

They started to walk away from the vendor and got about ten yards from the rendezvous point when they spotted the four Metalis Alliance soldiers standing near the edge of the market.

“What do we do now?” Jace asked Nellis.

“I have no idea. He obviously told them we were coming.” Nellis thought for a moment. “Just keep walking and don’t look back. Pray that Wincet gets the portal to us before they get to us.”

They reached the rendezvous point just as the portal opened. They stepped through before the soldiers had a chance to see them.

When they stood on the Traveler’s Bridge borne looked panicked. “My serial number was on the purchase slip. They are going to know that I am still functioning.”

“You mean this purchase slip?” Nellis held up the paper. “I lifted it when he was fussing around in the back. No one will know it’s you.”

“Quick thinking Nellis!” Wincet sounded impressed.

“There’s still one problem the power cell has been discharged.” Jace said. “Will it still work?”

Wincet took it out of the box and looked at it. “Oh yes! It will work and we should get inside and charge it right up. What do you say, Borne?”

“Thank you all for helping me.” Borne said.

Jace patted him on the back. “We are family now, Borne and families help each other out.”

Wincet waved them inside.

The power cell was in much better condition than the one Borne had. They were changed while Borne was on reserve power so that he wouldn’t go dark not even for a minute.

Dark Realms Episode 2: Pieces of the Whole
Word Count: 2848

Wincet called the Dark Army to a meeting room in the center of the Vision Cave. He looked over each one and smiled. “I have sent you on your first mission and you did well but you won’t always be so successful. I’m pleased that you did well but I need to stay cautious. This is, after all, a new experience for all of us. I think we should go around and tell each other what skills you bring to this group so in the future you can work together better. Tona, why don’t you start?”

“I was a mercenary before I walked through the portal that brought me here.” Tona looked around. “I am proficient in several languages and with many forms of weaponry. I still don’t understand the purpose of all of this. The universe can’t be saved by just the five of us. We got lucky with that windbag Hestrick. Most of you don’t even look like you can handle yourself in a fight.”

Dallys looked at Tona. “We may only be five but that doesn’t mean we can’t do something. Every little thing that we do counts. I’m sorry Wincet. You wanted to know my skills. I have knowledge of herbs and medicines. I was training to be a healer. It was just by chance that I stumbled onto the portal that brought me here.”

“I think the portal was a god send. I was being chased by the law when I ducked into an alley and fell through it.” Nellis looked at the others. “I have been known to acquire things without the owner’s permission.”

“He really is a thief?” Jace looked at Nellis. “Exactly what were you acquiring just before you came here?”

“I was after some jewelry that was on display at a museum. I had a client that was willing to pay a stupid amount of money for them.” Nellis shook his head. “Now someone else has probably taken them and is sitting in some far off place enjoying my money.”

“Nellis, other than acquiring goods you are also a shape shifter. That is a skill we can use to our advantage. It already proved useful in the last mission.” Wincet nodded. “No one ever notices a bird in a tree or a mouse in the corner when they talk about their plans to take over the world.”

“Just don’t turn into a bug. I might step on you by mistake.” Jace gave Nellis a worried look. “You aren’t going to steal from us are you?”

“I’ve checked and no one has anything worth stealing.” Nellis shrugged. He looked at Jace. “So what is your story?”

“I was a police captain in London. I was lead investigator on several crimes including a jewel thief ring that was out of York. I received an accommodation from Her Majesty, the Queen, for that one.” Jace looked around and no one seemed impressed. “So I guess my skills as an investigator will come in handy on these missions you will be sending us on.”

“I was sent through the portal because I was due to be terminated and disassembled.” Borne spoke up. “I do not know what good I will be. My technology is outdated and I have rust spots on my body.”

Wincet shook his head. “My friend, you will be of great use. We will need you to break through firewalls on computers and process information. Your great strength will be an asset as well.”

“How does it help to know everyone’s skills?” Nellis asked.

“When you are on a mission, you will know who will handle each task.” Wincet explained. “There will be times when you need to acquire something for Borne to decipher its code. Sometimes Tona will need to use her language skills to read documents for Jace to follow the clues. Dallys will be of great help to me with potions and she has her fae magick as will to help in the field. Yes! You will all complement each other as long as you work together.”

“So who is the team leader?” Tona asked.

“I am.” Wincet smiled. “But you will know what needs to be done and who will do the task when you get out there.”

Dallys looked up and watched the stars when the others started to argue about who should really lead the team. She wasn’t interested in being the leader. She just wanted to help people.

Suddenly one of the stars exploded and went out.

“Wincet.” Dallys pulled on the sorcerer’s sleeve. “What happened to that star?”

The others stopped arguing and looked at Dallys. One by one they looked up where Dallys was pointing.

Wincet looked up and squinted. “Which star Dallys?”

“It’s the one that was next to the big red one.” Dallys pointed to the sky. “It just exploded and went out.”

Wincet went over to his scrying bowl and waved his hand. He gazed at the image that appeared. “This isn’t good. He turned to look at the others. I think you have your next mission. Exalta’s star just went out and I think I know who did it.”

“Then why do you need us?” Tona asked.

“Because we have to do something, don’t we?” Nellis looked at Wincet. “So, what is it that we have to do?”

“I need you to retrieve a wand of great power from Trystana.”  Wincet walked back over to the group. “She lives on the planet Baikus. You need to go there and take it from her. Ah! Excuse me! Acquire it from her before she uses it again.”

“What does this wand look like?” Nellis asked. “Does it have jewels on it or is it made of precious metals?”

“It is made from the core of a comet. The proper name for it is Star Breaker.” Wincet looked over at his books. “I think I have a picture of it in one of my books.”

“Which one? There has to be hundreds of them.” Dallys looked at the wall in awe.

Wincet went over to the wall covered with shelves of books and pulled one down. He opened it and brought it over for the others to see. “Here it is!”

“It looks like a club not a wand.” Nellis seemed disappointed. “There isn’t any decoration or anything. What color metal is it?”

“The book says the wand is black stone.” Wincet said as he looked at the drawing in the book. Most comets are made of very dense rock. It will be very heavy, so Borne should be the one to handle it.”

“How is the sorcerer using it if it’s heavy?” Jace asked. “Is this sorcerer a giant or something?”

Wincet thought for a moment. “She has, most likely, put it in some kind of a display then she just lays her hands on it when she wants to use it.”

“How did she get a hold of a thing like that? Why hasn’t someone taken it from her before now?” Tona asked.

“I thought it had been lost years ago. Many had looked for it but never found it. I had no idea that Trystana had it in her possession all this time.” Wincet shook his head. “I don’t exactly know why she has chosen this time to exact her evil on the people of Exalta. I don’t even know why she would do such a thing in the first place.”

“That’s the difference between a good sorcerer and a bad one. You, Wincet are a good sorcerer.” Jace said.

“I’m glad that you think that, Jace.” Wincet smiled. “Now! Everyone gather what you need and meet me on the Travelers Bridge. You are on your way to Baikus.”

Twenty minutes later, the Dark army walked through the portal to Baikus. They emerged at the foot of the mountain where Trystana had her fortress.

Tona waved them into some trees and whispered. “We need to watch the guards for a little while to find out how long it takes for them to patrol.”

“It would be easier to cause a distraction.” Jace pointed to the two by his side. “Dallys and Nellis could slip in and locate the wand.”

“Then how are they going to get it out of there. It’s heavy, remember?” Tona glared at Jace.

“Hey people! I think we have a little problem. We’ve been caught.” Nellis cleared his throat and pointed to the guards on either side of the trees waiting for them to come out.

“Not for long.” Tona pulled out two knives and killed the two closest to her then lunged at the two on the other side.

Jace looked down at the bodies on the ground. “I said distract them not kill them.”

Tona sighed. “You can thank me later. Come on. We need to get inside.” She moved out from the trees and headed to the wall around the fortress.

The others followed her after pulling the bodies into the trees to hide them.

“Wincet is not going to like this.” Nellis said to Jace as they followed Borne and Dallys to the wall.

“No he won’t.” Jace agreed. “She didn’t have to kill them. It wasn’t part of the plan.”

Tona looked back at them. “Nellis how are you with locks?”

“I never met one I couldn’t pick.” Nellis went up to look at the lock on the metal gate. “Not a problem. I just need a key.”

“I’m fresh out. Can you pick it or not?” Tona asked.

Nellis put his finger against the lock and then turned it. The lock opened. “I am a key when I need to be. No one on Caspire uses these kinds of locks. We all know better. We use puzzle and tech locks to hide our valuables.”

“Let’s move.” Tona started through the gate. “We will search every room until we find the wand.”

Jace grabbed Tona’s arm. “Just wait a minute. We can’t just burst in and take it. We have to be smart. Let Dallys and Nellis have a look around. Then they can tell us where the thing is.”

“He’s right.” Nellis said to Tona. “Dallys can be the size of a bug and I can make myself a mouse and we can search undetected. Stay here and we will let you know where it is and how to get there.”

“Fine but hurry up.” Tona sighed.

“Tona, Wincet is not going to like what you did back there.” Jace had to say what he was thinking. “We are supposed to be saving the universe not killing it.”

“Jace, if you know a better way to get out of situation like that one then please let me know.” Tona glared at him.

“Knocking them out instead of killing them would have been better.” Jace took a breath then continued. “I’m not going to take your side when we get back. I doubt the others will either. You have to stop rushing in.”

“That’s what a mercenary does. We rush in and take care of the enemy.” Tona shrugged. “It’s all I know how to do.”

“You’re not a mercenary any more.” Jace reminded her. “You’re part of this …whatever it is … so you have to be open to other options.”

“What do you think Borne? Did I do the wrong thing back there?” Tona asked the android.

“Killing was not part of our mission.” Borne looked at Jace. “It is highly probable that knocking them out and tying them up would have been preferred by Wincet. I do not like taking lives. I find that it is a waste.”

“That’s a strange attitude from a soldier of the Metalis Alliance.” Tona shook her head. “Maybe your circuits really are getting a little fried.”

“Maybe he has a heart deep inside that bunch of circuitry.” Jace smiled and patted Borne on the shoulder.

“What is taking them so long?” Tona looked around nervously.

“They have only been in there a few minutes.” Jace said. “Give them time to look around.”

“They have been inside 8.5 minutes.” Borne commented. “Considering their present size and the speed in which they are traveling it will be at least another 10.2 minutes.”

Tona looked and Borne and sighed. “I hate waiting.”

“I noticed.” Jace said with a grin.

It actually took Nellis and Dallys a full twenty minutes to return. They transformed and Dally caught her breath while Nellis told the others what he saw

“The wand thing is in a room at the end of the first corridor. There are two guards they are armed with swords but no guns.” Nellis took a breath. “The security system is a tech lock. Borne, you’re going to have to crack it. I’m not any good with tech locks.”

“Were there any guards on patrol?” Tona asked.

“I didn’t see any. I circled around twice to make sure.” Dallys said.

“Nellis, what is the scariest thing you can turn into?” Jace asked. “We need to get the guards out of the room so Borne can get to the wand.”

“I can turn into a ribbon viper but I think that might make them want to cut me up not run.” Nellis thought for a moment. “I think an ursaur might be a better choice. It’s big and they won’t try to fight what they know they can’t beat.”

“Ursaur? Wow! That is scary.” Dallys shuddered. “I ran into one of those once and had to transform to get away. It’s not easy to transform when you are scared out of your wits. Believe me.”

Nellis nodded in agreement. “I believe you. Trust me.”

“Dallys, you keep watch and we will come in as soon as the guards are gone.” Tona looked at Jace. “This had better work because if it doesn’t I will have to add two more bodies to the list for this mission.”

“It will work. I scare myself when I turn into an ursaur.” Nellis chuckled. “Let’s get this done. I don’t like it that we have been here so long already.”

“He’s right it increases the chance that we will be caught. Tona checked her weapons. “Let’s go.”

The group went inside the fortress. Dallys turned into a point of light as soon as they went inside. Nellis went up ahead and transformed into an ursaur.

Jace jumped back when he saw the shaggy bear like creature with the long sharp fangs. “Bloody hell!”

“They don’t have those on Terra?” Tona smirked as they ducked behind a corner to hide from the guards when they ran out.

“Not that big and not with fangs.” Jace took a breath to calm himself. “I’m just glad that he’s with us.”

As predicted, as soon as the guards saw the ursaur, they ran out of the room leaving the wand unguarded. Tona, Jace, and Borne came in as soon as the coast was clear.

Borne quickly broke through the encryption on the security system and took the wand out of the display.

Jace looked down the corridor and it was still clear. “We had better hurry. They won’t be gone long and they will be bringing reinforcements.”

Tona took the lead as they left the fortress. Nellis, still as an ursaur pulled up the rear, he waited to transform until they were clear. Dallys dropped to the ground beside him.

When they got back to the foot of the mountain, they were surprised to find the portal was already waiting for them. They stepped through and saw that Wincet was waiting on the Traveler’s Bridge for them with a very angry look on his face.

Wincet looked at each one of them in turn. “Who/s idea was it to kill the guards?”

Tona stepped forward. “I am responsible for that. It was instinct I’m so used to doing whatever it takes to accomplish my goal. I didn’t think and I’m sorry.”

Wincet gave her a hard look. “It is my hope that this behavior will not be repeated.”

“It won’t I promise.” Tona bowed her head.

Wincet closed the portal. “We are here to be a defense against those that harm others not to be the ones who do the harm. What one of you does, you all do. You are pieces of a whole now, not individuals. You all must bear the consequences of her actions. Do you all understand?”

Everyone nodded.

“Good.” Wincet sighed. “Borne bring the wand to the work room. I have a safe place to put it.”

“Aren’t you going to destroy it with that hammer thing?” Nellis asked.

“I would but the Blacksmith’s Hammer is not strong enough to destroy this.” Wincet waved toward the wand. “For now, we need to keep it safe and hidden from those that would use it to destroy stars, planets, and moons.”

Wincet started down the Travelers Bridge with the others following behind him. Their mood was much more solemn than it was when they came back from the last mission. They were all thinking about what Wincet had said.

Episode 7
A few hours later, Wincet called everyone into the Vision Cave for a meeting. “Isadora and I have been going over what she and Nellis learned on their trip back to Caspire.”

Jace looked around. “Speaking of Nellis, where is he?”

“He said he had a headache and he was going to take a nap. He must be still asleep.” Izzie said. “I should go get him.”

“No. I’ll get him.” Jace walked off before anyone could say anything. He walked down the corridor into the living quarters and knocked on Nellis’ door.

“Hey Nellis! We have a meeting.” Jace waited a few moments then opened the door. When he found Nellis on the floor unconscious, he knelt down and shook him gently. “Nellis! wake up! I better get help.”

Jace ran back into the meeting. “Wincet, you need to come quickly. Nellis is on the floor and he won’t wake up.”

“I can help get him into bed.” Borne said to Jace.

“Thanks Borne. He is a lot heavier than he looks.” Jace nodded.

Wincet turned to Izzie. “Did he eat or drink anything while you were on Caspire?”

“He was out with his friends. He drank a lot and probably ate all manner of things but he was fine most of the day. The poison acts quickly so nothing he did the night before would be the cause.” Izzie closed her eyes and took a breath. “The fire candy! He ate candy just before we came back. He put it in his pocket. It’s in a little silver tin.”

Wincet, Borne, and Jace rushed to Nellis’ room. They managed to get him on the bed with Borne’s help then Jace went through his pockets while Wincet examined him.

Jace found the tin and opened it. “Red Hots?”

“What?” Wincet asked. He had never heard of anything called that before especially not candy.

“On my world, we have something similar to this.” Jace showed him the candy. “They’re called Red Hots. Basically, they’re cinnamon and sugar.”

“Cinnamon?” Wincet glanced at Jace. “Is that like dragon’s breath?”

“I don’t know.” Jace shrugged. “It’s the bark from a tree and you grate it over hot chocolate and put it in pies. On my world, they sell it ground or in sticks.”

“That sounds like dragon’s breath. It’s toxic to most forms of shifters but harmless to other species.” Wincet took the tin and smelled the candy. “It’s dragon’s breath all right.”

“Why did he eat it if he knew it was toxic?” Jace asked.

“He may not have known.” Wincet looked down at Nellis. “The dragon tree has been eradicated from Caspire for generations. He may not have even been aware it was poison. I’d say that was what happened with the others as well. I will get Dallys to help me make a cure for him.”

“If you can’t get it on Caspire then where did this come from?” Jace asked.

Wincet looked at the tin. He frowned when he recognized the language written on the tin. “This is from Kless and there just happens to be a forest full of dragon trees there.”

Izzie came to the doorway. “Has he been poisoned?”

“Yes my dear, he has.” Wincet stood up. “We also identified the poison and I should be able to work up a cure. We need to get back to the meeting then I can get to work while you go to Kless to track down that Count the Grubhor told you about. “

Wincet waved the others out of the room and they went back to the Vision Cave.

“Nellis has been exposed to the poison. It’s dragon breath.” Wincet turned to Dallys. “Dallys, you and I will make the cure. The others will go to Kless and kidnap Count Necroix.”

“Then what do you want us to do with him?” Tona asked.

“You will take him to Caspire and give him to the council. He will be tried for murder and imprisoned.” Izzie looked around the room. “Every shifter that died was on one of the planets that Bronwer the shop keeper put on his list. The evidence is pointing straight to this Count Necroix. The frog man said he had been scammed by a shifter that must be the reason that he is seeking revenge.”

Tona nodded. “So we get the Count and take him to Caspire. What about the poison that’s still out there? We have to find the smuggler that distributed it.”

“The shopkeeper said that  the smuggler’s name is Bex.” Izzie told her. “We shall have to get the council to issue a warning about the candy. Hopefully, we can stop any more from dying that way until the candy can be collected and destroyed.”

“Are we going to have to do that?” Tona asked.

“No. The council will send out agents, like me, to do it.” Izzie looked at everyone. “Nellis is … I can’t lose him.”

Dallys gave Izzie a hug. “We will do whatever we can. I’m going to get started now.” She left for the workroom.

“You can’t go to Kless like that.” Tona said to Izzie. “Can you take human form?”

“Yes. That’s how I’ve been getting around on other planets.” Izzie smiled. “They are more likely to talk to a human than a shifter.”

“You had better get going. I will meet on the Traveler’s Bridge in a few moments.” Wincet said. “I need to get something first.”

Everyone assembled on the Traveler’s Bridge to wait for Wincet. They only had to wait a few minutes.

Wincet handed something to Tona. “That is a whistle that will help you subdue any dog soldier still on Kless. I had heard that there were a few that survived the purging spell. They are actually hybrids but they will still be affected by that whistle.”

“Only the dog soldiers will hear it?” Tona asked as she turned it over in her hand.

Wincet scrunched up his nose. “Maybe bats and possibly shifters. I’m not sure about the shifters though.” He patted Izzie on the shoulder. “Good luck Isadora.”

“Thank you all for everything.” Izzie had changed clothes and was carrying the modesty veil that Nellis had bought for her.

“We don’t have him yet.” Tona looked at Jace. “Are you armed?”

“Two blades and you?” Jace answered.

“Four.” Tona looked at Borne. “Borne, you better stay here. It will be hard to explain you. The Metalis Alliance is not very popular on Kless  Maybe, you can keep an eye on Nellis for Izzie so that she doesn’t worry.”

“I can do that.” Borne looked at Izzie and nodded. “I will help dallys and wincet nurse him back to health.”

“Thank you Borne. I'm sure you will make a very good nurse.” Izzie pulled the scarf around her head and she tucked the ends. “Let’s get this done so I can be the one nursing Nellis.”

Wincet opened the portal and they stepped through into a forest.

“Why is it that we always end up in the middle of nowhere when we go to another planet?” Jace complained as he stepped out of a mud puddle.

“Do you want to be caught? That’s what will happen if we are seen going in and out of portals.” Tona asked.

“I would just like to be near a road for a change.” Jace said as he started walking.

“Do you know where you’re going?” Tona said.

“There is a road in this direction I can smell animal dung.” Jace didn’t turn around to see if they were following or not. He just kept walking.

“Jace isn’t usually this rude.” Tona said to Izzie. “He’s just worried about Nellis. He, Borne, and Nellis spend a lot of time together.”

“I’m glad he has friends.” Izzie smiled under the veil. “I better make myself into a human.” She took a deep breath and transformed into a slight woman with short dark hair and big eyes.

“That’s impressive.” Tona blinked. “I can glamour but not as well as you can transform.”

“I’m a shifter.” Izzie shrugged. It’s what we do. We had better catch up to Jace.”

“Yeah. He’s going to get himself in trouble without us.” Tona laughed and she and Izzie took the same path through the forest that Jace had just taken.

They reached the edge of the forest and found Jace standing with a man. The man was covered in dirt and dressed in overalls. He was carrying a shovel.

Jace turned to the women. “This is Simon. He’s a grave digger in that cemetery over there. He says the Count lives just at the end of that road over there.”

“He walks down here sometimes at night. His wife is buried over there by that tree. He is still in mourning.” Simon told them. “Some vile being killed his wife and left her to rot in the root cellar while it stole from the Count. When he found her, all he had left to bury was her bones. What manner of creature would do such a thing?” Simon just shook his head. “Shameful!”

Izzie bit her lip to keep from telling the grave digger that the count was responsible for nearly thirty deaths.

“That is shameful.” Jace glanced at Izzie. “This is his cousin from out of town. We should get her up to the house.”

“I have another grave to dig. The fever has taken quite a few this year but not as many as last year. We had to add a whole new section last year.” Simon nodded goodbye and went back to the grave he had been digging.

Tona waited until Simon was out of hearing before she spoke up. “Why do I get the feeling that the Counts dead wife may not have been murdered but succumbed to last year’s fever outbreak? The shifter may have just took advantage of the situation. I can imagine Nellis ever killing anyone.”

Jace shrugged. “I have only met two shifters. I can’t make a judgement on how they all behave with so little evidence.”

“We aren’t usually a violent race.” Izzie defended. “Murder is almost unheard of on Caspire. That was why the deaths from the poison were noticed, This shifter must have been a woman. The only way that a shifter can transform into a female is because it is a female.”

“How many of the victims were female?” Tona asked.

“Four.” Izzie took a breath. “Most were male. Must be because we tend to be more careful about how much we eat then males.”

“For your girlish figure?” Jace smirked.

“No. It’s because we usually have more self-control.” Izzie glared at him.

Tona laughed. “Come on Izzie. Let him think about that for a moment.”

Izzie and Tona started walking up the road to the Counts house. Jace stared after them for a moment then followed.

When they reached the house, Tona hid against the wall as Izzie knocked on the door. Jace went around to the back of the house to see if there was another way in.

“Yes what is it?” The Count asked impatiently when he opened the door. “Who are you?”

“My name is Isadora. I’m afaid that I’m lost. I was visiting my grandmother in the cemetery and I must have gone the wrong way when I left.” Izzie batted her eyelashes at the Count. “You’re Count Necroix, aren’t you?”

“Yes. I am.” The Count was growing impatient. “I am also very busy. What is it that you want again?”

“Please can you help me? Will you show me which way to go to town?” Izzie moved so that he could come out where Tona was waiting for him.

As soon as the Count stepped out on the porch, Tona grabbed him from behind. She twisted his arm behind him and shoved him to the ground in one fluid motion.

“Stay down, if you know what’s good for you.” Tona said as she waited for Jace to come help her.

Jace appeared in the door way. “Good you got him.” Jace took out a pair of handcuffs and put them on the Count. “We can get out of this creepy place now.”

“Wait! Where are you taking me?” The count asked.

“We are taking you to Caspire to be tried for the murder of twenty eight shifters.” Izzie told him.

“Please. can you get my pet bat?” The Count begged. “She will die if I leave her here with no one to feed her. Her name is Fickle.”

“I’ll get her.” Izzie went inside and looked around. She found the bat in a golden cage. “There you are. Come with me, Fickle.” She took the cage off the hanger and looked at the bat closely.

Fickle looked back at Izzie and blinked.

Izzie carried the cage out to the front porch. “I’ve got her. We should go now.”

As if Wincet was listening, a portal opened by the front porch.

“How does he do that?” Izzie looked at it with wonder.

Jace and Tona half dragged half carried Count Necroix through to the Travelers Bridge.

Wincet smiled when they came through the portal. “Count necroix, I assume. Stand back and I will send a portal to Caspire.”

“You aren’t going to put it in the middle of the woods again, are you?” Jace asked. “I’m getting tired of stepping in mud and dung.”

“How about I put you right in the council chambers? You can drop off your prize and Izzie can present the evidence all at the same time.” Wincet reached into his pocket and pulled out a vial and a piece of paper. “Here is a vial of the antidote to dragon’s breath. I included the recipe to make more. It must be administered within twenty four hours to be successful.”

“Thank you.” Izzie took the vial and the paper. “How is Nellis?”

“He’s on the mend.” Wincet smiled. “He told you to hurry back. He will be out of commission for a week or so.”

Izzie nodded. She took a breath then transformed back into a shifter. She pulled the scarf from her head and turned to the Count.

“You’re one of them!” Count Necroix exclaimed. He struggled against the hold that Jace and Tona had on him. “You are one of those filthy beasts that killed my wife.”

Jace and Tona tightened their grip on the prison.

“Count Necroix, I have a question for you. Where did you get this little bat?” Izzie held up the bat in the cage.

“My wife got it from a peddler. Why?” The Count looked at Fickle. “It isn’t illegal to have a pet.”

Izzie shook her head. “No it isn’t but this isn’t a pet. It’s not even a bat. It’s a shifter.”

Wincet hit the bat with a burst of magick and it fell asleep.

“Thank you Wincet.” Izzie grinned. “It’s the shifter that impersonated your wife, I would say. The thief has been under your nose the entire time.”

The count looked at the bat. No! I thought that the thief was long gone. Why would it stay after it stole from me?

“That is a question you will have to ask her when she wakes up.” Wincet waved them back so he could make the portal to Caspire. “For now, I need to get you on your way.”

“Do you need us to come with you?” Tona asked.

“No just heave him through the portal.” Izzie grinned. “There are always plenty of guards in the council chambers. Thank you so much for all your help. I will always be grateful for the help.”

“You are coming back, aren’t you?” Tona asked. “If you don’t we will have to deal with a love sick puppy.”

“You mean a love sick kitten boy.” Jace laughed. “He was miserable before you came back in his life. Now you are all that he talks about.”

“Tell Nellis I will be back as soon as I take care of this business.” Izzie handed the scarf to Jace. “Tell him to hold on to this for me.”

“I will.” Jace took the scarf. “Good luck Izzie.”

Jace and Tona shoved the Count through the portal when it opened and waved to Izzie as she stepped through with the sleeping shifter in the cage.

A week later, Izzie knocked on the door of Nellis’ room. She opened the door without waiting for him to answer.

“Hey. Are you feeling better?” Izzie asked as Nellis sat up on the bed.

“Yeah. I finally stopped throwing up.” Nellis grinned. “Whatever Wincet gave me made me sicker than I have ever been in my lifetime.”

“Sicker than you were after Coty threw that week long party?” Izzie asked as she sat on the bed.

“Yes! At least I could stand up without the room spinning and having the urge to vomit.” Nellis rubbed his chest. “I suppose I should be glad I’m alive, huh?”

“Yeah.” Izzie hesitated. “Nellis, the council has asked me to be an investigator full time. I decided to take them up on their offer but I wanted to talk to you first.”

“Why? You don’t need my permission.” Nellis shrugged. “We aren’t married and even if we were you wouldn’t listen to me anyway.”

Izzie laughed. “You are right about that. It’s just that I will be off world a lot and I may need a little back up from time to time. I already asked Wincet if it was okay with him and he was delighted. His reaction was not exactly what I expected.”

“These people…we are starting to feel like family.” Nellis pulled at the blanket. “You are family too, through me, of course.”

Izzie smiled. “That’s nice. For so long loving, you was like loving the dead. It was like I was loving just a memory of you. Now that you are in my life again, I’m not sure that I want us to be apart again.”

“It’s because I nearly died, isn’t it?” Nellis shook his head. “Look Izzie, I will always love you but I will never stand in your way where your happiness is concerned. I will always be here and you can always visit or whatever.”

“I just might take you up on that whatever.” Izzy leaned over and kissed him. “I better go. I have to find a kidnapped baby.”

“Sounds like fun.” Nellis pulled her back and kissed her again. “Be safe.”

“You too, Nellis.” Izzie got up from the bed and walked to the door. She looked back and waved before she walked through and closed the door.

“And there goes my heart.” Nellis whispered.

Episode 6

Near midnight on the planet Kless, a hooded figure walked through the cemetery carrying a bouquet of black roses. He was so focused on where he is going that he didn’t see the grave digger that was working late digging a grave for an early morning burial.

The grave digger climbed out of the grave and took a few steps toward the figure. “Sir? Excuse me. It’s late. Maybe, you should come back in the morning.”

The figure pushed back his hood and looked at the young man. “Simon, it’s only me. I have come to see my wife.”

Simon bowed his head. “Count Necroix! I’m sorry to have interrupted you. I ask that you watch your step. There are a few open graves.”

“I will be careful, Simon, as you should be out here at this hour on the night of a full moon.” In the moonlight his doglike features made him look sad before he pulled up his hood. “I won’t be long.”

“Yes My Lord.” Simon pointed to the grave he had been working in. “I better get back to work.”

The Count walked farther into the cemetery and came to a stop in front of a marble statue of an angel. He placed the flowers on the ledge of the monument and knelt down on one knee. He wiped some dirt of the inscription and bowed his head.

The inscription read: “Countess Anya Necroix, Beloved Wife”

“I miss you, my darling. Every single day. I will have my revenge against the foul beast that killed you and made me think you were still alive by masquerading as you. This vow I swear on the day of your birth. I swear to you, Anya.” The Count pushed back his hood and took a deep breath. He let out a howl that made the leaves on the trees shiver with fright.

Simon dropped his shovel and whispered a prayer for protection as he shook with fright. The Count had never done that before on any of his late night visits. Simon stayed in the grave until he was sure the Count was gone he didn’t like the man’s mood. It didn’t bode well for one responsible for the cause of that outburst.

Three months later…

In the dark and chilly manor house of Count Necroix, a little bat fluttered in a golden cage by the fireplace in the library. Her movements caught the Count’s attention.

“There. There. Fickle, my pet.” Count Necroix walked over to the cage and smiled then slipped a slice of apple through the bars of the cage. “Here is something sweet to calm you.’

The bat snatched the apple slice and dropped to the bottom of the cage to eat it.

“Better? The Count smiled. “Fickle, my friend, I have come up with a plan. I am going to kill all of the Casperian Shifters that I can. Eventually, I will kill the one that killed my Anya and impersonated her for months as the vile creature drained my coffers and conspired with my enemies. I don’t care if I have to kill every last one to find the one responsible for her death. I only wish that killing them could bring her back from the dead.”

The little bat sat on the floor of the cage waiting for another apple slice seeming to pay attention to every word the Count was saying.

The Count slipped another apple slice into the bat’s cage. “I see that you approve of my plan. It is tricky I cannot poison them all on their home world. No. That would cause too much attention. I must proceed slowly. I will start with those shifters that are off world. I have just the thing to do it.” The count laughed and slipped in two more apple slices. “Go to sleep, my friend. I have work to do.”

The Count blew out the candles on the mantle and walked out of the room.

Fickle sat in her cage happily munching on apple slices and not realizing that her master was about to commit genocide.

Six months later….
On Caspire, Izzie walked out of the Casperian council chambers with a look of frustration on her face.

Nellis knew it wasn’t a good sign whenever that look was on her face. He immediately stood up and waited for hell to be unleashed.

“They won’t fund anymore searches. They say that they will issue an off world warning and tell travelers that there is a risk to their safety but they won’t tell them some mad man is out there poisoning us.” Izzie started to pace. “The worst part is that there were five more found dead here on Caspire just in the last month. Same poison as the others. Nearly thirty dead and they don’t want to do anything about it. Politicians!”

“Come back to Centra with me. I promise that Wincet and the others will help you find the murderer.” Nellis reached out his hand to her. “Izzie this needs fresh eyes. You’ve been doing this all on your own for too long.”

Izzie stopped pacing and glared at him. “The families are depending on me to find answers, Nellis.”

“Then that’s what we will do. We’ll give them answers.” Nellis held out his hand again. “Come on. I think I have an idea.”

“What are you up to?” Izzie took his hand and let him lead her out of the capital building.

“Remember that rumor of the frogman in the swamp?” Nellis waited to continue then Izzie nodded. “It’s not a rumor there is actually a frogman in the swap. Well, he’s actually a Toal. They’re toads more than frogs.” Nellis shook his head. “We helped him out. Maybe, he has some idea who might be behind all this.”

“What do you think he knows? From what I hear, he’s been here for a while.” Izzie didn’t see where he was going with this idea of his.

“I’m pretty sure he’s been smuggling in banned goods. He’s used to having what he wants when he wants it.” Nellis walked over to his motorcycle and got on. “Come on. He can tell us who is bringing in the goods and then we can see what they know.”

Izzie climbed on the back of the motorcycle. “Where did you learn all this investigation stuff?”

“Jace was a policeman where he came from. He taught us all about following clues. Tona helped too. She used to be a mercenary.” Nellis started the motor. “Hang on the trails in the swamp are a little bumpy this time of year.”

Twenty minutes later, they arrived at a small house deep in the swamp. Nellis got off the motorcycle and walked toward the door.

The door swung open before he could knock and the Grubhor stood in the doorway. “Not you again.” He looked around. “Where is the rest of them?”

“Back at our base. I’m here to ask for your help.” Nellis tilted his head. “Aren’t you going to invite us in?”

The Grubhor looked over his shoulder then back at Nellis. “The place is a mess. You don’t want to go in there.”

Nellis pushed past the Grubhor and saw why he didn’t want him to come in. “Damn! This place looks like a palace. You do know you’re supposed to be in hiding.”

The room was draped in tapestries and there were silk cushions on the floor. Several dishes of foods not native to Caspire were on a low table in the center of the cushions.

“I just had some niceties brought from my home planet.” The grubhor shrugged. “I’m homesick.”

Izzie walked in and shook her head. “You were right. He is having things smuggled in, lots of things from the looks of it.”

The Grubhor winced then went over to a covered dish. “Would you like a red tailed spider? They’re very tasty. These are dipped in pepper sauce.”

“Nellis!” Izzie wrinkled her nose then stepped over to Nellis and poked him in the ribs. “Ask him!”

“Look Grubhor, we need to know who your source is.” Nellis took a beat. “There is someone poisoning shifters. It started off world but now it’s here too.”

“Poisoning shifters? Interesting.” The Grubhor tapped the lid of the dish. “You know, the Duchess of Fel has a thing about cats. You all look like cats to me. Have you talked to her?”

“It’s not her. Your source?” Izzie asked him. She was getting a little impatient.

The Grubhor took a spider out the dish and popped it in his mouth. He thought as he crunched. Finally he answered them. “If it’s not the Duchess then it might be the Count. He hates shifters. Not that I blame him. I would too if one killed my mate then impersonated her for months while robbing me blind.”

“What Count?” Nellis asked.

“Count Necroix of Kless. He’s a dog soldier or part one anyway. He came to Toalnar right before you came. He was interested in obtaining a large quantity of poison. I sent him packing but there are other leaders less scrupulous than I am that would certainly give him what he wanted.”

“I doubt it.” Nellis scoffed. “What did he want?”

“Exa venom.” The Grubhor shrugged. “It doesn’t matter because I didn’t give him any. I had him escorted back to his ship. It wouldn’t have worked anyway. You have something here that’s similar to an exa and you serve it for supper.”

“Where are you getting your goods, frog.” Izzie was really impatient now.

“I’m a Toal, not a frog. I get my niceties from a man with a shop at the edge of the swamp. His name is Bronwer. He’s from Greeda. He hates the Metalis Alliance as much as I do.” The Grubhor held out the dish again. “Are you sure you don’t want a spider?”

“No! Thanks.” Izzie wrinkled her nose again.

“Grubhor, you’re taking a risk with this guy.” Nellis warned him. “You’re supposed to be in hiding. Why call attention to yourself? He could tell the Metalis Alliance where you are.”

“He won’t. I pay him very well.” Grubhor grinned.

“That will only work until someone pays him better or your funds run out.” Nellis reminded him. He turned to Izzie. “We better go see this Bronwer.”

“Hey! Shifter, when do you think I can go back home?” The Grubhor asked. “This is a nice planet but it’s not my world.”

“You know you can’t go home until the Metalis Alliance stops wanting to kill you which considering they are a bunch of androids that means never.” Nellis took Izzie by the hand. “Thanks and stay out of trouble.”

The Grubhor nodded and watched as they went out to the motorcycle and rode off. He shut the door and sighed. He hated this place with its strange bugs and grumbling volcano.

Nellis and Izzie found Bronwer’s shop easily. They went inside and looked around. There was nothing there that would suggest that he sold smuggled goods.

“It looks normal enough.” Izzie whispered.

“Well, he isn’t going to advertise that he has illegal goods in here.” Nellis whispered back.

A human came from behind a curtain and smiled. “Hello my friends! I am Bronwer the shopkeeper. What can I do for you today?”

“Do you have any red tailed spiders in pepper sauce? My friend says they’re very delicious.” Nellis asked. “He recommended that we come here. You know him. He looks a lot like a toad.”

“Yes. I know your friend but I’m afraid your friend cleaned out my entire stock but I do have many delicacies from many different worlds.” Bronwer grinned. “But I’m sure your friend already told you that.”

“Do you have anything from Kless? Perfume or bath salts maybe?” Izzie asked. “My mother went there on holiday when she was much younger. She said it was a lovely place.”

“She must have been a very small child. Kless hasn’t been lovely for years.” The shopkeeper smirked. “Are you looking for a gift for your mother? I don’t have any scents but I do have a few modesty veils from Kless. They are quiet lovely. I have one in a beautiful shade of rose if you’re interested. I assume your mother is similar in coloring to you, dear?”

“Yes she is but…” Izzie felt Nellis bump her hip.

“We are definitely interested.” Nellis smiled. “Do you have any other things from your supplier for her mother?”

“The trader gave me a few cases of fire candy. He said he was having a hard time getting rid of it.” Bronwer laughed. “Candy! Can you imagine having a hard time getting rid of candy of all things? I will throw in a tin free of charge.”

“How much for the veil?” Nellis dug in his pocket for some coin.

“Two talons. I will be right back.” Bronwer grinned. “He went behind the curtain and came back with a delicate scarf and a tin of candy. “Should I wrap it?”

“No. We can do that.” Nellis slid the coin across the counter. “Friend, I was wondering how many other planets does your supplier trade with? What did you say his name was?”

“I didn’t. His name is Bex. He goes to about fifteen planets, I think.” Bronwer grinned. “He just started bringing goods from Kless. Lucky you!”

Nellis tapped the counter with a third coin. “Do you mind writing down all the planets that you know Bex visits for me?”
Bronwer was suddenly suspicious. “Are you the law or something?”

“No.” Nellis grinned. “Just someone interested in the niceties as my friend calls them.” Nellis tapped the coin on the counter again. “There’s a little something in it for you.”

Bronwer wasn’t sure what the shifter’s motives were but he took out a pad of paper and pen to write down all the planets that he had received goods from. “I don’t want any trouble.”

“We aren’t the law.” Izzie smiled. “And we won’t give you any trouble.”

Bronwer nodded and wrote everything he remembered down then slid the list across the counter to Nellis.

Nellis laid the coin on the counter and picked up the list. He handed the scarf to Izzie and pocketed the tin of candy. “Thank you for all your help.”

“Tell your friend that I will be getting another shipment of red tailed spiders in pepper sauce at the end of the month if he is interested.” Bronwer winked.

“We will.” Izzie waved as they walked out the door. They got to the motorcycle and she stashed the scarf under the seat in the storage. “Let me see the list.”

“Not here. Nellis shook his head. “We need to get to the rendezvous point. We can look at it when we get back to Centra.” He opened the tin and popped a piece of candy into his mouth. He made a face. “He wasn’t kidding when he said it was fire candy.” He offered Izzie the tin but she shook her head. He shoved it back into his pocket and got on the motorcycle.

“Nellis, I don’t think they really want me to come back with you.” Izzie got on the bike. “I get the feeling that they don’t completely trust me.”

“I have lived with them for a while and they don’t completely trust me either.” Nellis laughed as he started the motor and pulled away from the shop.

They headed to the forest on the outskirts of the capital city and pulled into a clearing. Nellis idled the motor and waited.

“How does he know we are here?” Izzie asked as she looked around.

“He uses that gazing thing and his magick.” Nellis sighed. “Look Izzie,I like having you there with me. I miss you.”
Izzie gave him a squeeze from her position on the back of the motorcycle. “I miss you too.”

The portal opened in front of them and Nellis slowly drove the motorcycle through onto the Traveler’s Bridge on the other side. They both got off the motorcycle as Wincet approached.

Wincet smiled. “Isadora! I’m glad you came back. We have been going through my books looking for the kind of poison that has the symptoms you described but we are not having much luck. I was hoping you would give us a little more to go on.”

Nellis pulled the list of planets from his pocket and handed it to Izzie. “We have some information from Grubhor about a Count on Kless and a smuggler. Izzie talked to the council this morning too. I’m going to put my bike away and take a nap. I have a bit of a headache.”

“Hangover you mean. He was out with his friends all night. I found him lying on my couch this morning.” Izzie shook her head. “Some things never change. Wait! My scarf!”

Nellis opened the seat compartment and handed it to her. “Two talons for a bit of material? That’s a little steep.”

“You didn’t have to buy it.” Izzie reminded him.

Nellis shrugged. “It’s your color.”

Izzie smiled as she watched Nellis push his motorcycle to a wooden out building.

“Isadora, you know he still cares deeply for you.” Wincet smiled.

Izzie smiled and looked at the scarf. “I know but it’s complicated.”

Wincet called everyone together in the Vision Cave. “We have a mission. The Duchess of Fel is going to attack the Metalis Alliance outpost on Greeda. We need to stop her.”

“It sounds like she’s doing us a favor so why should we try to stop her?” Jace asked.

“It’s because that outpost is in the middle of a human settlement.” Borne told them. “The humans are there to keep anyone from destroying the planet.”

“I get it. No one wants to kill all those people just to get at the outpost.” Jace nodded. “There are sickos on Earth that do the same thing.”

“What does a ‘sicko’ look like?” Nellis asked.

“They’re human but they are the lowest of the low. Cowards really.” Jace explained.

“I think every militia uses that tactic to some degree. I saw if far too often when I worked as a mercenary.” Tona put her hand on the knife at her belt. “Just point me in the right direction and I will take care of this. It sounds like she just needs to be taken out.”

“That wasn’t what I was suggesting. The Duchess of Fel is a resourceful woman. She wouldn’t hire a mercenary like you. She prefers to enslave her soldiers with spells and potions.” Wincet explained. “She’s been out there for years not causing any trouble until recently. She lost the love of her life. He was killed by the Metalis Alliance for not surrendering his vessel when told. They blew him and the ship up. That is why she is targeting them and Greeda is the most vulnerable of all their outposts.”

“She’s grieving. No one makes a rational decision when they’re grieving.” Dallys looked around the room and realized that everyone there knew exactly what she meant. “What are we going to do?”

“I was thinking that one of you could go undercover and act as a saboteur on the ship while the others sabotage the weapons on the ground.” Wincet looked at Nellis. “I would send you in with a partner of course.”

“Why are looking at me?” Nellis took a step back from the group. “I’m not going to like this plan, am I?”
Wincet sighed. “The Duchess has a fondness for cats. If the stories that I have heard are correct, her ship is teeming with them. Nellis you are the logical choice. She won’t be able to resist another cat.”

“I’m a Caspirian shape shifter, now a cat.” Nellis shook his head. “Cats run around naked, drink toilet water and lick themselves in public. No! Find someone else to do it. Tona can glamour into anyone. Send her.”

“Look Nellis, if you’re worried that some girl kitty will fancy you, it’s never going to happen.” Jace laughed.

“We need to give him a bath.” Tona picked something out of Nellis’ fur. He’s going to need a good brushing too. He’s sort of matted in spots.”

“Wait a minute! I haven’t agreed to this.” Nellis started to back away from the group.

Tona and Jace looked at each other and then tackled Nellis.

“Suck it up, kitten boy. You have a space ship to sabotage.” Jace said as he and Tona picked him up off the floor and carried him to the showers.

“What are we going to do while he’s on the inside?” Dallys asked.

“I want you to go in with him. Stay a point of light as much as you can and stay out of sight.” Wincet said. “Borne, I need you to monitor the communications of the outpost.”

“Of course.” Borne nodded. “I will search for the frequency now.”

“How are we getting on board a space ship?” Dallys finally asked.

“I will open a portal on the ship. It will be tricky but I can do it.” Wincet tapped the table. “Once we get the ship on the ground then I can portal you back from there.”

“I hope you’re thinking of landing it not crashing it.” Dallys looked worried.

“I am. I need to get my supplies for the portals. I will meet you all at the Travelers Bridge.” Wincet walked off.

“Borne, why do I get the feeling this is going to end badly?” Dallys looked up at the android.

“Nellis is unpredictable and illogical.” Borne confirmed her worst fears.

“Wonderful!” Dallys threw her hands up and went to get ready to leave.

It was almost two hours later when everyone assembled at the Travelers Bridge to leave. Jace and Tona were going to the planet to do surveillance and disarm the ground weapons while Dallys and Nellis were going on board the ship to sabotage it.

Jace and Tona walked through the first portal onto Greeda. They appeared just outside of the outpost and. had to take cover immediately.

Four soldiers from the Metalis Alliance came around the corner and almost caught them as they walked out of the portal.

“That was close.” Tona looked out from behind the crate they had ducked behind. She rubbed her sweaty hands on her thighs. “Wincet didn’t say it would be so hot here.”

“Too close. Borne didn’t say anything about patrols. This is going to be harder than we thought.” Jace pulled a dagger from his jacket. “We need to get to the control room and disable the weapons. We should do it quickly before we melt. This heat is unbearable.”

“Wait. I think I have an easier way to get through the patrols.” Tona put her hands over her face and whispered something when she took them away she looked like an android.

“Neat trick.” Jace smiled. “Let me guess. I’m the prisoner.”

Tona stood up and grabbed Jace by the arm. “That’s what they will believe.”

Tona was right. She marched Jace into the outpost and down the hall toward the holding cells without being questioned. Before she got to the cells, she took a left. There was a maintenance closet at the end of the corridor. She pulled Jace inside and turned on the light.

“Bloody hell! It’s just as hot in here as it was outside.” Jace wiped the sweat off his face. He looked over the circuits on the wall. “Now we need to find the power source of the weapons. Can you read any of this?”

“It’s the one to your left. It says pulse cannon.” Tona pointed to a large switch on the wall.

Jace laughed and moved the switch to the off position. “Who would have thought that when I left London I would be living like Doctor Who? Pulse cannon deactivated.”

“Who is ‘Doctor Who’?” Tona asked.

“One night, when we aren’t busy, I will tell you all about Doctor Who. Right now we need to stay quiet and out of sight.” Jace reached over and turned out the light.

Dallys and Nellis walked out of the portal into a cargo hold. They looked around and didn’t any crew. The only beings around were about a dozen cats.

“You’re going to have to shrink and walk on all fours to blend in.” Dallys looked him over. “They did a nice job brushing out those mats. You fur is really shiny.”

Nellis sighed. “They brushed me within an inch of my life. Nellis pulled at the yellow ribbon on his neck. “This is humiliating.”

“Nellis? Nellis is that you?” A voice across the room whispered.

“Did you say something?” Nellis looked at Dallys.

“No. It wasn’t me.” Dallys looked around. “I don’t see anyone.”

Suddenly, a black cat stood on its back legs and grew in size. “I thought that was you. I’ve been looking for you.”

“Izzie? What are you doing here?” Nellis asked. “I thought you were on Caspire.”

“I was but there has been a rash of disappearances and I volunteered to check it out.” Izzy looked at him. “I haven’t seen you look that pretty since we were in school. Love the ribbon. Yellow was always your color.” She turned to Dallys. “His mum would brush him just like that for portrait day.”

Dallys giggled.

“Don’t tell her that. Why are you here? You’re not an investigator or anything.” Nellis asked.

“No but I am one of the ones missing a loved one. That’s you, by the way.” Izzie sighed. “What are you doing here and what was that thing you just came out of?”

“It’s a portal. That’s how we travel around.” Nellis nodded towards Dallys. “This is Dallys. She’s a part of the Dark Army too.”

“Dark Army? Nellis, what have you gotten yourself into now?” Izzie put her hands on her hips and glared at him.

“No time to explain it all now.” Dallys cut in. “Do you know where the power grid is? We need to disable the ship when it gets to Greeda.”

“Yes.” Izzie looked at Nellis. “You’re going to have to shift to get around. You might want to stay here and hide.”

“I’m a fae. I can make myself small and stay close to the ceiling.” Dallys took a deep breath and turned into a point of light.

Nellis shrank a little then dropped to all fours. “Let’s go.”

Izzie returned to her cat form and led them out of the cargo hold and down the corridor to the auxiliary power control room. Izzie returned to her normal size and waited for the others to do the same.

“No one is ever in here.” Izzie told them. “This is the backup to the backups but you can access everything on the ship here. Do you know what you’re going to do the ship to make it crash?”

“Hopefully, we are going to make it land not crash.” Dallys said as she went over to the control panel. “Watch the door, Nellis, just in case.”

Nellis nodded. He stood next to the door and opened it a little to look out.

“Nellis, where have you been?” Izzie asked.

“I stepped through one of those portals and I found myself on another planet.” Nellis glanced back at her. “There was a sorcerer there. He summoned us. He wants to protect the universe from dark forces. So I go on missions with the others and fix things.”

“Are there any other shifters with you?” Izzie asked.

“No. I’m the only one.” Nellis shook his head. “How many are missing?”

“Twenty. I found ten so far but they were dead.” Izzie put her hand on Nellis’ chest. “I was afraid I would find you dead too.”

“What killed them?” Nellis asked. He didn’t look at her hand on his chest. If he did then he would give away how much he missed her.

“They were poisoned. I don’t know who is doing it yet.” Izzie took her hand off his chest. “I came here after I heard about the Duchess and her cats. I was hoping some of the shifters were hiding out here.”

“When we get done with this mission, I want you to come back with me and talk to Wincet, the sorcerer. He will help you.” Nellis smiled at her. “We all will.”

“Thank you.” Izzie gave him a kiss on the lips.

“We are almost to the planet. It looks like I can turn off weapons and disable the engine from here.” Dallys raised an eyebrow at the two shifters that were gazing in each other’s eyes. “Nellis, did you hear me?”

“Huh?” Nellis looked over a Dallys. “Yes I heard you. Just do it.”

“Yeah.” Dallys wrinkled her nose. “This may get a little bumpy.”

On the planet below, Tona and Jace heard a commotion outside the door. Tona turned off the light and opened the door a crack to hear what was being said.

“Hurry to the weapons! There is a ship in orbit and they are about to attack.” One of the soldiers yelled to another.

They could be heard running down the corridor when Tona closed the door.

“They’re here. Now all we have to do is wait.” Jace wiped his brow. “And sweat.”

“This is too easy.” Tona frowned. “They should know by now that the weapons are off line. Borne would have figured it out by now. Why can’t they?”

“Maybe the upgrades in the newer models took some of their sense away.” Jace shrugged. “Borne seems almost human sometimes.”

Tona smiled. “Yes he does. We better make sure the weapons are really off line. We need to find a control panel.”

“Unless you can glamour me, I should stay here.” Jace said.

“Fine. I’ll be back.” Tona opened the door and slipped out.

On the ship, Nellis, Dallys, and Izzie were still in the control room. The ship had begun its descent. It was shaking and it felt like it would come apart any minute.

“Dallys, what did you do?” Nellis asked. “It’s going to crash.”

“No its not. There is plenty of time to bring the engines back on line.” Dallys looked at the panel in front of her. “I think.”

“Great! I’m going to die naked with a yellow bow around my neck.” Nellis sighed dramatically. “There is someone coming.”

Nellis and Izzie shifted into cats and Dallys became a point of light.

The door opened and a man picked up Nellis and Izzie. “What are you two doing in here? Did you get shut in by accident? I better take you to the Duchess. She wants you all on the bridge.” He walked out with them and closed the door.

Dallys took her normal form as soon as he left. She had to keep the weapons off line but the engines needed to come back on before they crashed.

Nellis resisted the urge to bite the man as they were carried down the corridor. He looked over at Izzie and caught her winking at him.

The man turned into a room at the end of a long corridor. The walls were covered in gold curtains and there were pillows all over the floor. On the floor near the large throne like chair were several dishes of food. Along one wall there were several men at control panels. Music filled the room from a woman playing a harp near the door on the opposite wall.

The man bowed. “Duchess, I found two more.”

“Ah! Bring them here.” A dark skinned woman practically purred. She took them from the man. “Come here my darlings, are you afraid?”

The man bowed and made a hasty exit.

The woman rubbed Nellis’ head then gave him a kiss on his cheek. She then gave Izzie a cuddle. “There is some nice fishy in the dishes. No worries now! Just have a nibble.” She put them down near several large dishes of something smelly. “Good kitties.”

A man standing near a control panel on the other side of the room called out. “Duchess, the engines are back on but the fuel is low. We are still leaking fuel. We have to land and fix the leak before we can continue with your plan.” .

The Duchess hissed. “Then find us a place to land. I will send in some soldiers instead. Either way that outpost will crumble. I will not be disappointed. I will have my revenge.”

“Now what?” Izzie whispered.

“We didn’t plan on her sending in troops.” Nellis whispered back. “I can’t get word to Tona and Jace about the change in her plan. This is not going to end well.”

Somehow, the crew of the ship managed to land without crashing them into a mountain. From one of the windows on the bridge, Nellis and Izzie could see that the outpost wasn’t very far away.

“We have to get out of here.” Nellis whispered as he looked around. “What is behind all these drapes?”

“There’s a door to the galley. We can get out that way. Come on.” Izzie led Nellis through one of the drapes to a door.

The door opened automatically and they found themselves in a large galley. There were tables set in long rows and the room smelled of cat food and steamed potatoes.

“I’m never eating fish again.” Nellis rubbed his nose against his shoulder. “This place reeks.”

“You always were a light weight.” Izzie led him to the door on the opposite side of the galley. “The soldiers will be going out this way. There’s a hatch at the end of the corridor. That’s how I got in.”

“We have to get Dallys first. We can’t leave her behind.” Nellis reminded her .

“Then we had better hurry. We can turn into birds once we are outside and get to the outpost faster.” Izzie looked up and down the corridor before she went through the door. “Stay close. This ship’s layout is a little confusing.”

Nellis followed as close as he could.

They got to the control room and opened the door. Dallys dropped down from the ceiling and took her normal form.

“I said it wouldn’t crash.” Dallys grinned.

“We need to get to the outpost and find Jace and Tona. The Duchess is sending troops in place of an orbital attack.” Nellis told her. “Izzie can get us out of here.”

Dallys took her form as a point of light again and followed them out of the room.

“This way!” Izzie led them down to the corridor by the galley.

By the time they got to the hatch, it was open and several soldiers were forming ranks on the ground beside the ship.

Izzie and Nellis shifted into turtle doves and took to the air with Dallys close behind as a point of light. They flew directly to the outpost.

Tona had found a control panel in a small room closer to the barracks. She was relieved to see that the weapons were down. She was just about to return to Jace when an officer caught her.

“Soldier, get back into uniform and report to your commander.” The officer ordered. “There are hostiles coming toward the outpost. You need to be ready to fight when they get here.”

“Yes sir.” Tona stood at attention and prayed that the officer didn’t look too closely at her.

“Carry on!” The officer walked off.

Tona breathed a sigh of relief and rushed back to where she left Jace. She opened the door and slipped inside.

“Finally! I think I’ve lost a stone while I’ve been in here.” Jace wiped his face. “Do you know if they managed to land the ship?”

“Yes and now the Duchess is sending her army to attack the outpost.” Tona grabbed him by the arm. “We have to warn the people around the outpost.”

“How do you propose we do that?” Jace asked as tona pulled him through the doorway into the corridor.

“They have to have a weather siren or something we can use to sound an alert.” Tona dragged him outside and looked up at the tops of the buildings. “There! That’s a weather siren. They have one on my planet. When it sounds the people go to their assigned bunkers to wait out the storm. I’m sure they have the same set up here.”

“How are we going to get there from here?” Jace asked.

Two turtle doves landed at their feet and turned into Nellis and Izzie. A point of light followed them then turned into Dallys.

“We are so glad we found you. The Duchess is sending her army to take out the place.” Nellis told them. “We have to do something.”

“We know.” Tona eyed the stranger. “Who is she?”

“This is Izzie. She’s an old friend.” Nellis introduced her. “She was looking for missing shifters on the Duchess’ ship.”

“Nellis, can you shift back into a bird and turn on the weather siren.” Jace asked. “We need to get the people to safety.”

Izzie laughed. “Of course he can. He and his troublemaking friends used to do it all the time.”

“I’ll be right back.” Nellis shot Izzie a glare before he turned back into a turtle dove and flew off.

“So, how long have you know our Nellis?” Jace asked.

“We grew up together. We were even engaged once.” Izzie smiled. “He has always been in trouble of one kind or another that was why we called it off. Shortly after that, he disappeared.”

Tona and Jace looked at each other and laughed.

“You realize they are going to tease him about that now.” Dallys told Izzie.

“I can’t believe kitten boy was engaged.” Jace shook his head. “Were you drunk?”

“I was in love.” Izzie smiled. “I still am or I wouldn’t have taken on the task of finding the missing shifters.”

Suddenly the weather siren came on and people started to pour out of buildings and head for the storm bunkers.

“We had better make sure everyone is down there.” Tona looked down the street. “Dallys and I will take this side you and Izzie take that side. She pointed east. Nellis can catch up with us when he gets back.”

A dove landed and turned into Nellis. “I’m back. I’ll go with Jace and Izzie.”

The groups split up and checked to make sure all the houses were empty on either side of the outpost.

“So Izzie who called it off? You or him?” Jace asked.

“Don’t answer that!” Nellis looked at Izzie. “He just wants more to tease me about.”

“Don’t ruin my fun, kitten boy.” Jace gave Nellis a little shove on the arm.

“Kitten boy?” Izzie giggled. “That’s cute.”

“When is the portal? I want to get out of here before the fighting starts.” Nellis changed the subject.
Jace looked at his watch. “We have a half an hour. Let’s get this done I don’t want to be here when they start either.”

Tona and Dallys walked through their side of the settlement. “Do you trust her?”

“She helped us get around on the ship and I think she’s still in love with him.” Dallys answered. “I don’t feel uncomfortable around her. Nellis promised we would help her find the rest of the missing shifters. So far she’s found ten and they were all dead. She thinks someone is killing them with poison.”

“We better keep an eye on Nellis.” Tona said as she looked into another house. “If there is a killer out there he could be a target.”

“Who would want to kill shifters?” Dallys shook he head. “They’re really sweet people.”

“Someone who thinks they aren’t so sweet.” Tona answered. “It’s all clear here. Let’s get back to the portal sight. We need to be clear of here before the fighting starts.”

“You don’t have to tell me twice.” Dallys turned and followed Tona back to the alley where she and Jace came out of the portal.

By the time everyone arrived at the portal sight, the two armies had met a short distance from the outpost in an open field.

“I hope everyone stays in the bunker until it’s over.” Dallys said as she peered through a hole in the wall surrounding the outpost.

“The bunker doors won’t unlock for at least six hours if they are like the ones on my planet.” Tona said. “They’ll be safe.”

“What’s to keep the duchess from carrying out her original plan?” Izzie asked.

“The ship is out of fuel. I drained the tanks,” Dallys said. “She will either be captured or her forces will take the outpost.”

“Is this what you do all the time? Keep innocent people safe?” Izzie asked.

“Sometimes. Mostly we just annoy the bad guys.” Nellis laughed.

“Wincet better be on time the heat is killing me.” Jace looked at Nellis and Izzie. “Why aren’t you two melting?”

"It gets hotter than this on Caspire." Izzie sighed. “This feels like early summer.”

“Late spring.” Nellis corrected her.

Jace rolled his eyes.

The portal appeared in the alley. One by one they stepped through until it was just Nellis and Izzie,

“Is it safe?” Izzie asked nervously.

“Here, hold my hand.” Nellis took her hand. “Just step through. It’s that simple.”

Nellis was sweaty and uncomfortable. He turned on his side opened his eyes. That was when he realized something was horribly wrong. He wasn’t where he should be. He wasn’t in his room on Centra anymore.

Nellis could feel the hot summer breeze through an open window and smell sulfur from the volcano and the sweet smell of cattoses in bloom. There was only one place that he knew of where cattoses grew and that was Caspire.

How could he go to sleep in his room on Centra and wake up in a bed in Caspire?

He looked down at the blanket he was clutching and made another discovery. It wasn’t just any bed either. It was a pink furry bed that smelled like fresh baked cookies. It was Izzie Bonafur’s bed! How in the holy rings of the moon did he end up at that black she devil’s bed?

“Nel, are you awake?” Izzie purred into his ear. She ran her finger around the edge and blew into it. She kissed him on the cheek. “Nel?”

Nellis rolled over on his back and came face to face with the she devil in question, Izzie Bonafur. Her green eyes were wide and they made him feel like they were staring right into his soul. “Hi Izzie.”

“Don’t you ‘hi’ me, mister.” Izzie’s smile turned into a glare. “I had to clean up after your card game last night. Seriously, I don’t know why you insist on having all those burping farting leering men over to my place. If you want to have a card game you should do it at your place. What am I saying? Your place is a trash pile and that’s being nice about it.”

Nellis blinked. Was this a memory or was it really happening? If it was a memory, he certainly didn’t remember it. He especially didn’t remember that pink see through nightie she was wearing. He had forgotten how beautiful she was and how her black fur shimmered in the sunlight.

“Nel? Are you listening to me?” Izzie rubbed Nellis’ chest. She nipped at his nose. “Now that you’re awake, how about we have a little fun?”

“Sure.” Nellis regretted saying that the second the word came out of his mouth.

Izzie launched herself on top of him and started kissing him. Nellis squeaked and shifted into a mouse and ran off the bed. When he hit the floor, he shifted back into himself.

Izzie laughed. “Oh you want to play shifties with me. I’m game. What shall we turn into? Oh! We haven’t been lizards in a while. We can get all twisty and go at it.”

“I don’t want to play with you. I just want to go.” Nellis looked down and realized he was naked. “Where are my pants?”

Izzie shrugged and giggled.

Nellis grabbed a pillow and covered himself. “Izzie, where are my pants?”

“I don’t know.” Izzie looked annoyed. “You didn’t have them on when you came to bed last night. You don’t really need your pants, do you? Come back to bed, Nel.”

“It’s too hot to have sex.” Nellis looked around the room and found his pants behind the dresser. “You know I don’t like the heat.

“Well it’s going to be a long time before its cool again. I don’t think I can wait that long.” Izzie pouted. I do like winter with those short days and the long nights. Long nights that you and I can snuggle together all night or play naughty games. Don’t you want to play naughty games with me, Nel?

Nellis sighed. Who was he kidding? “Yes Izzie. I love playing naughty games with you but I really should figure out how I got here.”

“What do you mean?” Izzie frowned. “You got here just like you always do. You rode your motorbike. Nel, are you feeling alright?”

“I think I may be coming down with something.” Nellis pulled on his pants and found his shirt and boots. “I’m just going to go for now.”

When he turned toward the door to leave Izzie was standing there blocking the way. She snatched his shirt out of his hands. “You better get back in that bed. I will make you a nice bowl of soup.” She held out her hand. “Put down those boots and give me your pants!”

“Izzadora!” Nellis started to feel a little panicky. “I will not give you my pants I have to go. Give me my shirt and let me leave.”

“You don’t love me anymore!” Izzie started to cry then she got angry. “You have another girlfriend, don’t you? I knew it. It’s that tramp Falla, isn’t it? She is always sticking her tail in your face. Tell me who she is and I will claw her eyes out.”

Nellis closed his eyes. This was definitely not a memory. But how did he get here?

“We are supposed to get married! We were supposed to spend all nine lives together, blissfully in love. You are supposed to love me! Why would you do this to me?” Izzie started crying all over again.

Suddenly, there was someone pounding on the front door. Izzie moved and opened the bedroom door to see who the crazy person was who was pounding on her door.

Nellis followed her while trying to put on his boots.

“Nellis! Nellis!” The voice sounded familiar to Nellis but he couldn’t put a name on it.

Izzie pulled open the door and Jace stood there. “Who are you and why are you banging on my door?” She turned to look at Nellis. “Do you know this human?”

“Jace?” Nellis was confused. How did Jace find him on Caspire.

“Nellis, wake up!” Jace shouted. “Nellis, you need to wake up. Stop playing around, mate and just wake up.”

Suddenly Izzie turned and slapped Nellis in the face. He blinked and saw blurry images of faces standing over him.

“We better get Wincet. He’s burning up.” Another voice said.

Was the person speaking Tona or Dallys? Nellis didn’t know. He didn’t care as long as it wasn’t Izzie Bonafur.

Dark Realms #4: The Anasauri’s Plight

Wincet sat at his workbench mumbling to himself as he read from an ancient tome. He was reading about the Anasauri, a race of reptilian humans that evolved into one of the most technologically advanced civilizations in the known universe.

The Anasauri were thought to be extinct. Their home world Saur had been lost to a series of cataclysmic disasters. It had been almost a thousand years since anyone had reported seeing an Anasauri.

Tona walked up and noticed Wincet mumbling. “Wincet, what’s wrong?” She looked over his shoulder and saw the drawing in the book he was reading. “The Anasauri are a myth. Why are you letting those old tales upset you?”

Wincet turned to look at her. “The Anasauri are real! I met them in my youth. They were nearly extinct then. They had a small city on the moon of another planet in their system. I wonder if there are any left.”

“Maybe, we should go looking for them and see if there are any left.” Tona looked at the drawing again. “They certainly were ugly, weren’t they?”

“Ah!” Wincet smiled. “They may have been ugly but they were the most intelligent and well-spoken people that I have ever had the privilege to meet. I just wish you all could have the chance to meet them.”

“Well, unless we go back in time, we never will.” Tona patted Wincet on the shoulder. “I’m going to teach the others some defensive moves. We will be in the Vision Cave. That’s the only place that they can’t break anything of value except maybe one of their own heads.”

“Take it easy on them, Tona. Most of their races are not as agile as elves.” Wincet warned her. “Dallys may be the only one who can keep up with you.”

“I know but we need to be able to keep from getting killed if we are to continue these missions.” Tona grinned mischievously. “Besides its funny when Nellis falls on his ass.”

“Tona!” Wincet said sternly.

“Well it is.” Tona laughed and patted him on the shoulder again before she left.

Wincet sat and thought for a moment. “Maybe there was a way that the Dark Army. It would take some doing but he may be able to pull it off.”

He shut the ancient book and went to the shelf to find another. He ran his hand along the spines of the ancient books in many different languages from many different worlds until he found the one he wanted. He took it over to the workbench and opened it up.

“Now, I just have to find the right spell for the portal to go back in time.” Wincet turned the pages carefully in the old book. “Not too far but just enough for the Dark Army to meet the Anasauri for themselves.”

In the Vision Cave, the Dark Army was spaced out in pairs to work on the moves Tona was teaching.

“Ow!” Nellis got off the floor and rubbed his behind. “Did you have to do that so hard?”

Dallys and Jace tried to keep from laughing but failed.

“Well they’re not going to hit you with a pillow, you know.” Tona sighed. “Let’s try it again. Jace, partner with the little kitten boy this time.”

“I am not a kitten.” Nellis folded his arms across his chest. “I am a Casparian shapeshifter. We’re furry creatures.”

“Furry little kitties.” Tona smirked. “Now remember … lunge and duck. Not roll into a ball and fall on your…”

“Everyone! Come! I have something for you to do.” Wincet waved them over to the center of the cave. “Come look at what I have found.”

“It’s just a dusty old book. You have hundreds of them.” Nellis limped over to Wincet. “What’s the big deal?”

“Wincet, what have you found?” Jace asked. “Are we going on a mission?”

“Please! Anything to get us out of training with Tona.” Nellis rubbed his behind again. “I think I broke my tail.”

“You have a tail?” Tona burst out laughing.

Wincet glared at Tona. He cleared his throat. “I was thinking about the time I met the Anasauri and how they are assumed to be extinct now. That’s when Tona came in and said something about time travel. So, I looked for the spell to turn the regular portal into a time portal. I want to send you through to the last known location of the Anasauri.”

“Where was the last known location of the Anasauri?” Dallys asked. “It isn’t on some planet that eats faeries is it? Do they eat faeries?”

“No! They don’t eat faeries.” Wincet looked up at the stars and pointed to a star near the edge of the universe. “It was on a moon orbiting another planet in their system. Their planet was lost to a cataclysmic disaster.”

“Why do we need to go back to back in time?” Jace asked. “I mean, if there are still some left then we should just meet them and not go back in time. Time travel sounds dangerous to me.”

“There is always some risk when going through the portal.” Wincet looked at each one of them. “If you are not comfortable with the idea, I will not use this spell unless everyone agrees to it.”

“I vote ‘no’.” Jace looked at the others.

Nellis looked at Wincet. “I vote ‘no way’.”

“No offense, Wincet, but I vote ‘no’ too.” Dallys sighed. “If the spell doesn’t work, we could end up anywhere at any time.”

“Borne, what do you think?” Wincet asked. He looked at the android that was standing quietly with his head bowed.

“I am still calculating the odds. I will let you know when I have finished.” Borne bowed his head to finish.

Tona looked at Wincet. “I’m with them. I don’t want to go time traveling across the universe. We could find ourselves as dinosaur snacks or worse.”

“What could be worse than being eaten by a dinosaur?” Nellis asked.

“I just don’t want to be eaten period.” Dallys shuddered at the thought. “Too many creatures think I’m a crunchy and tasty thing.”

Borne looked up. “I have finished my calculations and I do not wish to go.”

Wincet sighed. “I was hoping that you would get the great honor of meeting an Anasauri but I can still send you to the third moon of Calna where they were last seen. Maybe there are some left. At the very least, you could find out what happened to their civilization.”

“I think we would be fine with that.” Jace looked at the others for approval. “Is there anything we should take with us like air or protective gear?”

“Does your world have a moon?” Dallys asked.

“Yes it does. It’s just a giant rock that orbits our planet and shines the light of our sun back at us at night.” Jace looked puzzled. “Why?”

“My planet has a moon too. There is an ocean and several land masses on it.” Dallys told him. “Jace not every world is like yours. Tona’s planet has two moons and Nellis comes from a world without a moon.”

“I’m beginning to learn that everything is possible in the universe.” Jace smiled at her.

“What good is a moon that you can’t use it? We use our smaller one to hunt game.” Tona sighed. “I miss hunting things.”

“This is not a hunting mission. It’s turned into an intelligence gathering mission.” Wincet shut the book he was holding. “Instead of meeting the Anasauri, I want you to see what happened to them. Look around for any signs of invaders or disease. At least, we can give them the respects of letting the rest of the universe know what happened to them.”

“We should get changed.” Tona looked down at the loose clothes she was wearing. She rubbed her nose. “Some of should bathe too. If there are any Anasauri left, we don’t want them to smell us coming.” Tona headed out to the living quarters to clean up and prepare.

Jace patted Nellis on the shoulder. “I think she means that you’re a bit gamey.”

“Hey! This is my natural musky smell.” Nellis glared at Jace.

“I have some herbs that can get rid of that Nellis.” Dallys winked at Jace behind Nellis’ back. “Good thing that I restocked last time we went to market. It will take a lot of herbs to get rid of that smell.”

Nellis walked off in a huff. He mumbled something about furless people and their noses.

“I will go make the preparations for the portal. Meet me there in a half hour.” Wincet sighed and walked out of the Vision Cave.

“You know, Wincet probably thinks we’re a bunch of children.” Dallys laughed.

“We are much younger than he is chronologically.” Borne looked at Jace and Dallys.

“She means that we act like a bunch of children, Borne.” Jace patted his friend on the shoulder. “Come on. We better get ready to go or they’ll leave us here.”

Less than an hour later, the Dark Army stepped through the portal on the third moon of Calna. They expected to see ruins but what they saw instead surprised them.

From the ridge top where they stood, they could see that there was a city gleaming in the sunshine. The tall buildings were made up of mostly metal and glass. There were vehicles floating around in the air from one place to another. Everything was clean and shiny.

“Wow!” Jace looked around. “This isn’t what I expected at all. Is that a flying car?”

“I don’t know.” Tona looked at him. “What’s a car?”

Jace rolled his eyes. “A car is a vehicle that carries people from one place to another. They run along the ground in my world.”

“That would be dangerous they could run over someone that way.” Nellis frowned. “The more I hear about your world the less I want to go there.”

“We need to split up. Borne, Nellis, and Dallys try to find a data port. We need to get as much info as we can on how many there are, what weapons they have, and the size of their army.”

“Tona, we aren’t gathering intelligence for a military strike.” Jace reminded her. “Borne, focus on census data and historical records. That building over there looks like a school. You can probably tap into the city’s servers there. You two keep him from getting caught, please.”

Nellis and Dallys took the lead toward the building that Jace pointed out. Borne glanced back as he followed them and looked worried.

“You and I should go look into some windows to see how they live.” Tona pulled on Jace’s arm. This one is open and it has some shrubs we can hide in.”

“Are you sure those aren’t poisonous?” Jace eyed them cautiously.

“Just come on.” Tona tugged on his sleeve again.

They settled in under an open window and peeked inside. Two blue lizard-like creatures were standing in what looked like a kitchen. The female was washing dishes and the male was reading something off an electronic device.

“You never have time for me or the hatchlings, Punar. It’s always work, work, and more work. You seem to forget that you even have a mate and hatchlings at home.” The female turned away from what she was doing to put her hands on her hips.

“My work is very important to me.” Punar put down the device and walked over to her. He put his hand on her cheek. “Ka, you know that I love you and all of our hatchlings. I would be home more if I could but I must see that all the knowledge of the Anasauri is archived safely for future generations.”

“Ha!” Ka pushed away his hand. “I don’t care about future generations. I care if your hatchlings will know who you are when you come in our home.”

“It isn’t like that.” Punar sighed. “I’m here every day. They see me every night when I kiss their little faces before they drift off to sleep.”

“They see you but when do they get to know you?” Ka asked. “When we are standing around the pit when you die?”

“KA!” Punar shouted.

“Hush! You’ll wake them up.” Ka glared at him.

“I promise to take this weekend off. We can take them to the water to splash around and play. I may even get in too. What about you?”

Ka sighed. “I would like to go water. It’s been a long time since we did anything as a family.”

“Not since the fifth hatchling came out of his shell.” Punar put his arms around her. He started to nibble on her neck. “I can’t wait to see you in your water suit.”

“None of that!” Ka pushed him off. “We have plenty of hatchlings already. I hear what you are thinking, you know. I have heard your thoughts since we were bonded.”

Punar laughed. “Sometimes, I swear you can only read my very naughty thoughts. That’s why I love you so much.”

Ka sighed. “Sometimes, I can read all your thought then other times you are so closed to me. We are bonded. We should share everything even our thoughts. Sharing our minds is what mates do.”

Punar rested his forehead on hers. “You’re right and I’m sorry. Let’s go get some rest.”

“Rest is all you will get this night, Punar.”  Ka let him take her by the hand and lead her out of the room.

Jace looked at Tona. “They sound normal to me. How about you?”

“I wonder how many hatchlings they have. It sounds like their population is growing not shrinking.” Tona wondered.

“On my world, overpopulation is a problem. Not enough food and too many people.” Jace looked around. “I wonder if the others are finished. We should get back to the portal site.”

“Don’t you want to peep in some more windows?” Tona teased.

“I really don’t want to take the chance that I will see something I can’t get out of my head.” Jace shuddered.

“You are no fun.” Tona stood up and pulled him up to his feet. “Let’s go. They should have the information from the city’s data storage by now.”

In the school, Dallys and Nellis were keeping an eye out as Borne used a cord from his wrist to tap into a port on a data output station.

“Borne, are you done yet?” Nellis asked. “We got to get back to the portal site.”

“I will be done in just one minute.” Borne disconnected from the data port. “I have to secure the data. It will take a moment.”

Dallys glanced back at Borne then looked at Nellis. “If he doesn’t hurry up then we are going to get caught.”

“Give him a moment.” Nellis looked out the door. “I don’t see anyone around. Don’t worry so much.”

Borne walked up behind them and tapped them on the shoulders. “I am finished.”

“Finally, let’s go.” Dallys pushed past Nellis and went outside. “Come on. We have to get to the portal site.”

Nellis and Borne followed her to the top of the ridge where Tona and Jace were already standing.

“Did you get anything?” Jace asked.

“Yes. I have census records and the historical data Jace suggested that I obtain. I also retrieved medical data about their race.” Borne told them.

“That’s what took so long.” Dallys sighed.

The portal opened behind them and they stepped through.

Wincet was waiting for them expectantly. “Did you find out what happened to them? Was it a natural disaster or was it disease that wiped them out?”

“Neither.” Jace looked at Wincet. “They are alive and well. From what we saw, they are flourishing on that moon. They have a huge city there. They’re living their lives just like everyone else.” He glanced at Tona. “Making babies and going on family vacations.”

“How? No one has seen them in a thousand years.” Wincet was perplexed. “How many of them are there?”

“According to the census information that I downloaded, there are over five million Anasauri in that city.” Borne reported. “There are five other cities with equivalent populations to the city we saw.”

“Did you meet anyone? Did you talk to them?” Wincet asked. He looked at them. “I don’t understand. Why didn’t you talk to them?”

“We didn’t want to disturb their lives. They are obviously hiding.” Jace shrugged. “If they haven’t wanted to be seen in over a thousand years then stands to reason they don’t want people just showing up to talk to them. We should let them be. Maybe someday, they will want to make contact with the universe again.”

“He has a point Wincet. If we let the universe know that the Anasauri are still alive there may be someone out there that will try to destroy them. We still don’t know what destroyed their planet.” Tona looked at the sorcerer.

“Are we in agreement that we shall keep their secret?” Wincet looked at each of them as they nodded in turn. “For now, the plight of the Anasauri is our secret to keep.”

Tona sighed and put a sack of carrots on one of the crates in the clearing outside the village. “Why is it that we always get stuck doing the supply runs?”

“We drew the short straws.” Dallys put the sack of potatoes on the crate. “Borne volunteered. He always volunteers. Borne?”

Tona looked over at Borne. “What the…?”

Borne stared off into space. It was as if he were mesmerized by something.

“Borne, are you alright?” Dallys knocked on his chest. “Borne?”

Tona came over and looked at the android. “I think he’s getting a transmission or something. Borne?”

“Does that mean they know where he is?” Dallys looked concerned. “If they know where he is, then we are going to be found. The Metalis Alliance is a ruthless bunch of thugs.”

“You don’t have to tell me. I have had more than one close call with that particular ruthless bunch of thugs.” Tona waved her hand in front of Borne’s face. “Borne, we can’t stay here. Wincet will be sending the portal any moment.”

Borne blinked and wobbled slightly. “There was a transmission to all members. There is a call to converge on Toalnar. They are planning an attack on the planet to capture the ruler of the planet. They called him the Grubhor.

Tona looked at Dallys. “We need to get back and talk to Wincet. This isn’t good.”

Just then the portal opened and they picked up the sacks and Borne picked up the crates. They stepped through.

“Did you get everything?” Wincet asked as he looked over the sacks and crates they brought through.

“We couldn’t find the bang bang fruit.” Dallys piled the sacks into the cart by the entrance of the portal. “What was that for anyway?”

“It makes a good wine when it’s fermented.” Wincet looked into one of the sacks. “This will hold us for a while. Was there any trouble on Kavel?”

“Borne received a transmission from the Metalis Alliance.” Dallys looked at the android. “Tell him what you heard.”

“Borne, what did you hear?” Wincet was suddenly serious. “Do they know where you are? I disabled your homing beacon but I’m not sure if that would keep you completely safe.”

“They have not located me yet. They do not seem to be searching for me. They believe I was destroyed by the portal.” Borne accessed the transmission and paraphrased it for Wincet. “There was a general call to converge on the planet Toalnar. That means all ships, not otherwise engaged, are to come to the planet at best speed. The transmission also mentioned that the Grubhor is a wanted criminal and he is to be captured, if found. They stressed the fact that he must be captured alive. That means they want to interrogate him for information.”

“We need to get to the house and get Jace and Nellis up to speed.” Wincet waved his hand over the cart and it disappeared.

“Are we going after the Grubhor ourselves?” Tona asked as she followed Wincet to the end of the traveler’s bridge.

“If we do nothing, he will die.” Borne told her. “His death will be drawn out and very painful. The interrogators of the Metalis Alliance are known for their ability to inflict great pain.”

Dallys stayed silent as she followed the others to the house.

Wincet burst through the door of the main room. “We have a mission. We must make a plan.”

Jace stood up. “What’s going on?”

“I don’t like the look on Wincet’s face that’s what’s going on.” Nellis quipped. “What do you want me to steal?”

“The Grubhor.” Wincet said with explanation.

Nellis shook his head. “No! Not him. Is he kidding? He almost hung me for pick pocketing. I was pick pocketing but I think hanging is a bit over board.”

“Suck it up Nellis. Borne heard a transmission saying the Metalis Alliance was going to capture the Grubhor.” Tona sat down on the sofa. “We need to get to him before they do.”

“He can’t go.” Jace pointed at Borne. “They think he was destroyed. If they see him, they will destroy him.”

Wincet nodded. “That will leave this mission to the four of you.”

“Three.” Dallys said suddenly. “I can’t go either. They think fae are a delicacy. They will eat me as soon as I become a point of light. They are huge walking toad-ish things. They eat insects and faes when they fly. They like us because we’re crunchy. They like crunchy.”

“Then it’s the three of us.” Jace nodded then frowned. “Wait! Did she say toad?”

“You didn’t think every creature in the universe looks like you, did you?” Nellis laughed. “Hello! Small creature covered in fur standing beside you.”

Jace rolled his eyes at Nellis. “Of course not. But toads? Really? They’re all slimy.”

“Yeah but they pay mercenaries really well.” Tona grinned. “I worked for them once. It was the best paying job that I have ever had.”

“We aren’t getting paid this time.” Jace rubbed his chin. “Okay. Say we get this Grubhor, what are we going to do with him once we have him? He can’t stay here.”

Wincet looked at Nellis. “Does Caspire still have wetlands on the northern continent?”

“Yeah.” Nellis nodded. “You want to take him there? What if he won’t go?”

“He’ll go if he doesn’t want to be captured and tortured to death.” Tona sighed. “We need to focus on how to get him before we start to come up with a plan to hide him.”

“Won’t they find him on Caspire?” Jace asked.

“No it is on the other side of the universe. The Metalis Alliance does not even know of it.” Borne answered him.

“Tona, you’ve been in the capital city. What would be the best way to get to the Grubhor?” Wincet asked.

Tona thought for a moment. “We should use the tunnels under the city. They come up in one of the private rooms for the Grubhor. It is his best means of escape when the capital is overrun by the enemy. They are well maintained. I was smuggled in and out of the city that way when I was working for them. It was something about the others in the council not knowing he had hired a mercenary to do the spy work for him.”

“That means that he knows you, right?” Jace asked her.

“Yes. He said he liked my leather.” Tona smiled. “He should remember me. I was the one that brought the intel that turned the tide of war with the Fracs of Fromme.”

“I’m going to regret this but what do they look like?” Jace asked.

“They are giant frogs.” Tona laughed. “Don’t you have other races than human on Terra?”

“Yes. We call them politicians.” Jace shook his head. “I had no idea when I came through that portal what I was getting myself into. Giant frogs and toad men.”

“I can get us in but he may need some convincing to leave his people.” Tona looked at Borne. “Maybe you should come. You could play him the transmission. That would convince him.”

Borne looked at Wincet then walked out of the room.

“He sure is emotional for an android.” Nellis plopped back down on the sofa.

“Shut up Nellis.” Jace left to go find Borne.

“Do you think he will help us?” Tona looked over at Wincet.

“He has a good heart. He will help.” Wincet sighed. “You better get ready to go. Dallys, I will need your help with a potion.”

“What kind of potion?” Dallys couldn’t think of a single reason they needed a potion.

“We need to make the Grubhor easier to handle so that he doesn’t get himself killed. It’s just a precaution but I would feel better if we had it ready.” Wincet waved Dallys along to the workroom.

Jace found Borne outside sitting on the rocks near the waterfall. He sat down beside him. “Borne, what’s up with you? You are acting practically human.”

Borne gave Jace his best impression of a glare.

“Oh come on. You know what I mean. You’re acting like someone just stole your last biscuit.” Jace poked him on the arm. “Tell me what’s up.”

“The transmission. I have been on those missions before. Far too many times. I have been one of the ones to capture creatures knowing that they would be tortured and killed.” Borne looked out over water. “Jace, I know I cannot change what I have done but I do not know how to erase it from my hard drive safely.”

“Maybe you shouldn’t. Like you said, you can’t change what you did but you can try to make amends by keeping others from the same fate.” Jace looked out where Borne was looking.

“Like the Grubhor?” Borne looked at his friend.

“Yeah like him.” Jace patted Borne on the back. “Come on, let’s go save the toady bloke.”

Borne nodded then they got up and went back to the group.

Tona looked up when they walked in. “We’re leaving in a few minutes. Borne, are you in?”

“Yes.” Borne nodded.

“You two better get your weapons ready.” Tona pulled a dagger out of the sheath in her boot and looked at it. She shoved it back in.

“You wouldn’t happen to have another one of those, would you?” Jace grinned.

“Sure.” Tona pulled a dagger with its sheath out of her corset. It was almost as big as the one in her boot. She flipped it over and handed it hilt first to Jace.

“Thanks.” Jace took the blade and looked at it. “Exactly how many of blades do you have on your person?”

“Three now.” Tona shrugged. “I like blades.”

“Obviously.” Jace looked at the blade again and put it in his belt.

Wincet came in with the potion and handed it to Tona. “Don’t use this unless it is absolutely necessary. It will enchant him for about twenty four hours. Nellis is already on the bridge.”

Tona tucked the dose in her pocket and nodded. “Got it.”

Tona, Jace and Borne followed the old wizard to the Traveler’s Bridge where Nellis was waiting.

“Let’s get this over with.” Nellis was shifting on his feet in anticipation.

Wincet called the portal and they stepped through to Toalnor. When they were all through, the portal disappeared.

“Borne, are you picking up anything?” Jace asked.

“They are not here yet. From the strength of the signals, I can tell the ships are still at least an hour and a half away.” Borne looked around. “Where are the tunnels?”

Tona started walking. “This way.”

Tona was right. The tunnels were well maintained. Soon, they were at the door to the Grubhor’s private rooms. Tona pulled her dagger from her boot and opened the door slowly. She motioned for the others to stay put.

They were hit with the sound of laughter and music. Tona walked around the screen that hid the door and took in the view.

The Grubhor was sitting on a pile of cushions on the floor watching several women were dancing in bikinis and waving veils as they moved. Tona must have moved because he spotted her standing there.

“Tona! Is that you? Come join me, my dear.” The Grubhor waved her over. “What brings you here to Toalnar?

Tona sat on one of the cushions. “I came to rescue you before the Metalis Alliance comes to get you. They are only an hour away. They plan to capture you and interrogate you.”

“Are you working for those bruts now?” The Grubhor sat up.

“No. I have a friend who escaped from them. I brought him with me. Listen to what he has to say but do it quickly they are on the way.” Tona looked at the dancing girls. “Maybe we should do this in private.”

The Grubhor clapped his hands and the room cleared quickly. “I will listen to him.”

Tona went to the door and waved Borne in.

“What is this? You brought one of them to me?” The Grubhor stood up.

“This is Borne. He isn’t with the Metalis Alliance any more. He escaped and he wants to help you.” Tona looked at Borne. “Play him the transmission.”

Borne nodded. “I have the transmission in my data bank.” Borne played the full transmission. He waited to see if the Grubhor wanted it played again.

The Grubhor rushed over to one of the walls and tapped the panel three times. A hidden compartment opened. He took a sack full of gold and gems out of the recess. “Get me out of here, Tona.”

“This way.” Tona waved him to the hidden door.

The Grubhor stopped short when he saw Nellis and Jace. “Who are they? Wait don’t I know you, furball?”

Nelis shook his head. “Nope. Not me.”

“He, and the other one, is with me.” Tona grabbed the Grubhor by the arm and pulled him along. “We have to hurry.”

They rushed through the tunnel to where let out into the woods where the portal was to appear.

“What is he waiting on?” Tona looked around. “Borne, are they here yet?”

“No but they are closer.” Borne looked up at the sky. “They will be in orbit sooner than I thought. They must have been on transmission silence.”

The portal suddenly appeared.

“What is that?” The Grubhor eyed the swirling pool suspiciously.

“It’s our way off this planet. You need to step through that and then you will be safe.” Tona pulled him closer.

“Are you sure it’s safe?” The Grubhor didn’t move.

“Yes.” Nellis grabbed the Grubhor’s other arm. “Let’s go.”

Tona and Nellis got the Grubhor through the portal. Jace pulled on Borne’s arm and they followed the others.

They all cleared the portal and stood on the Traveler’s Bridge.

“Where am I? What planet is this? The Grubhor shrugged off Tona and Nellis.

“You are on a planet called Centra. I am Wincet, your host. We will take you to your final destination in an hour. I need time to recharge before I call another portal.”

“Where will you be taking me?” The Grubhor frowned. “There is no place that is safe from the Metalis Alliance.”

“We are taking you to the wet lands of my planet.” Nellis spoke up. “Its name is Caspire.”

“Never heard of it.” The Grubhor shook his head.

“Neither has the Metalis Alliance.” Borne assured him. “You will be safe there.”

“Come. We will try to find you something to eat.” Wincet waved him toward the common area.

Nellis went with them while the others stayed where they were.

The Grubhor walked into the room and took one look at Dallys. “I see my supper already. How kind of you to provide such a delicious delicacy.”

“Oh no! I’m out of here.” Dallys left as quickly as possible.

“There is some sea grass and fish in the kitchen area.” Wincet held out a chair. “Please sit down. Nellis will get you something to eat.”

“I would rather have the crunchy little bug girl.” The Grubhor sighed. “But that will have to do.”

“I’ll go get it.” Nellis grinned as he went into the kitchen. He laughed when he saw Dallys sitting on a chair holding a serving fork. “I thought you were kidding.”

Dallys put the fork down and glared at Nellis. “I wouldn’t kid around about being eaten.”

Nellis put some sea grass on a plate. “I’ll come back for the fish in a minute. Could you cook one?”

“Here.” Dallys put a fish on a plate and handed it to Nellis. She picked up the fork again. “He probably likes it raw.”

“Okay then.” Nellis walked back into the common area. “Here you go.”

“That looks lovely.” The Grubhor rubbed his hands together and dug in.

“As soon as you finish your meal, we will get you to Caspire.” Wincet poured some water in a goblet. He sat down and placed the goblet in front of his guest. “Do you know what the Metalis Alliance wants with you?”

“I executed, if you could call it that, one of their commanders.” The Grubhor laughed. “He was snooping around where he shouldn’t have. My general found him lurking in the Capital city so I had him melted down. From his markings, I think he was a high ranking officer.”

Wincet took a deep breath. “I see. That would make them want to torture you.”

Nellis looked at Wincet and shook his head.

When the Grubhor was finished with his meal Wincet and Nellis took him to the Traveler’s Bridge.

“Do I have to go through one of those things again?” The Grubhor hesitated to walk down to the end of the bridge. He shifted the large sack he was carrying to the other side.

“Yes but it is the last time. You realize that you can never go back.” Wincet told him.

“Yes. Thought as much.” The Grubhor sighed.

Wincet called the portal. “I’ll leave it open for a few minutes so you can come back, Nellis.”

Nellis nodded. “This way.” He guided the Grubhor through the portal and held on to him as the Grubhor steadied himself on the other side.

“It’s beautiful. I didn’t expect it to be so lush and green.” The Grubhor looked around at the marshy land and the large volcano in the distance. There was a settlement and a large body of water just past it.

“I lived over there in the settlement near the sea.” Nellis pointed to the settlement. “Just don’t stray too far from civilization. That volcano is still active.”

“I’ve never seen a volcano before. What do they do?” The Grubhor looked at the large crater with curiosity.

“They rumble then spit fire and smoke. Don’t get too close or you might get cooked.” Nellis patted him on the back. “Just go to the settlement. They will help you get everything you’ll need. You have the resources in the sack to last you for a while.”

“Thank you for your help. Tell the rest of your friends, I appreciate what they have done.” The Grubhor nodded. “Goodbye.”

“Goodbye and good luck.” Nellis stepped back through the portal and it disappeared.

The Grubhor took a deep breath and started walking for the settlement.

Dark Realms: Pilot
Word Count: 2997

Wincet was a master of magic and sorcery on a planet at the center of the galaxy. He was a tall lanky man with a bald head and a course gray beard. No one knew his real age but there were rumors that he was a least a thousand years old.

Wincet was a solitary man and he liked it that way. But his world was about to get a bit more crowded. He wasn’t intending for it to happen but the universe had other ideas.

The vision cave was near Wincet’s home. The cave is deep underground with an opening to the sky. The entrance was hidden by magic and only Wincet knew the spell to get inside. It was a larger high ceiling cave focuses the power of the universe.

Wincet sat on a boulder after sundown one evening in the Vision Cave. He looked up at the sky. He had a strange feeling as he looked up into the blinking stars. There were fewer stars than there used to be. He had a feeling that dark magic was involved somehow.

Wincet began to wonder if there was a thing he could do to fix it. He was a skilled master of all types of magic, after all.

Wincet knew he needed to hurry as he watched one more star blink out. He went to his work room and began to go through his books and scrolls to find the one spell that was going to be the solution to stop the spread of darkness throughout the universe.

Wincet had to go through most of his materials before he found the spell that he needed. The spell would bring a representative from the darkest worlds in the universe that was still full of light. He would lead these people to conquer darkness and bring light back into the universe. They would become his Dark Army.

Wincet gathered his materials and ingredients for the spell and brought them to the end of the bridge near the Vision Cave. He set up everything and waited until the sun was at just the right angle. One of the items he brought was a mirror. He needed the light from the setting sun to activate the spell.

The Traveler’s Bridge, as it was called, had a natural portal at one end that allowed the traveler to go to any planet in the universe. It is the perfect way to bring the Dark Army to Wincet.

Normally, it was a one way trip. Once you went through, you could never return. Wincet was reversing the portal to bring people to him. He was changing the nature of the portal forever with this spell.

Wincet mixed the ingredients in a cauldron at one end of the bridge. He set up the mirror to reflect the light into the cauldron. Once he had everything set up he held up his arms toward the other end of the bridge.

“Worlds of darkness I am in dire need
I ask for your light to fight the darkness
Send me those full of the brightest light
From the darkest worlds in your realms
To fight with light against the darkness.”

Suddenly, a mass of grey smoke appeared on the other end of the bridge. It started to swirl until it became a vortex of grey. It coalesced into a portal to bring the Dark Army to him.

“Finally! All I have to do now is wait for someone to show up.” Wincet sat on the edge of the bridge to wait.

Wincet had waited nearly three hours and nothing had happened. He got up and was just about to leave when someone stepped through the portal.

An android stepped through the portal and looked around. “Excuse me, sir. Where am I?”

“You are on a planet called Centra. I am Wincet. I have summoned you here. Where have you come from?”

“I have come from the sixth planet of the Metalis Alliance.” The android glanced back at the portal. “My commander sent me through this mist to see where it would lead.”

“Why would he send you, if he didn’t know where you were going to end up?” Wincet asked him.

“I am expendable.” The android looked upset. “I am an obsolete model. I was scheduled to be deactivated.”

“What is your name, friend?” Wincet had sympathy for the android.

“I am Borne. My model is …”

“I don’t care about your model number.” Wincet shook his head. “I just want to know if you would like to make a positive difference in the universe.”

“I will lend my assistance to you sir, if it means that I will not be deactivated. I am an android I can be helpful with many technical systems.” Borne seemed to perk up.

“That is a skill that I can use.” Wincet waved the android closer. “Come with me and we can get started.”

Suddenly, there was a scream and a small furry creature fell through the portal. He sat up and shook his head. He spotted Wincet and Borne. He looked confused.

“Where the knockers am I?” Nellis scratched his ears. “One minute, I was at the cantina and the next minute they are throwing me out into the street only I didn’t land in the street. I landed here. Where the knockers is here by the way?”

“You are on a planet called Centra. I am Wincet. I summoned you here. This is Borne. He just arrived as you did.”

“Summoned?” The furry creature jumped up to his feet. “What are you? Are you some kind of wizard or something?”

“Actually. I am.” Wincet grinned. “What is name and where are you from, friend. You know ours, we would like to know yours.”

“I’m Nellis. I’m from Caspire. How do I get back?”

“I’m afraid that the portal is one way at the present.” Wincet looked at Nellis and squinted. “You are a shapeshifter?”

“Yes.” Nellis shrugged. “It comes in handy sometimes. I get to hide in plain sight. It keeps me from getting pinched by the law.”

“You’re a thief!” Borne looked at Wincet. “He is a thief.”

“Yes. I surmised that.” Wincet grinned. “We will need his skills to save the universe from darkness. Sticky fingers might be helpful to obtain supplies on the different worlds where you will be traveling.”

“You want me to steal for you?” Nellis looked confused.

“I want you to help me bring the light back to the universe.” Wincet smiled. “Borne has already agreed to help me. Will you help me too?”

“Sure, as long as you keep me out of a cage.” Nellis scratched his head. “I will help you with anything.”

“Good!” Wincet grinned. “We were just going to go back to my home to get you settled in.”

Nellis started to walk down the bridge to Wincet and Borne. “I hope you have something to eat. I’m starving.”

“OW!” A small faerie fell through the portal. She stood up and shook off the dust. She rubbed her hip and looked around. “What is this place? How did I get here?”

“He summoned you.” Nellis pointed at Wincet. “His name is Wincet and he’s a wizard.”

“A wizard? Seriously?” The faerie rolled her eyes. “I was on my way to the old temple and I stumbled over a tree branch and landed here. Where exactly is here?”

“This is Centra. As he said, I am Wincet. I have summoned you here to help return the light to the universe. I am looking for people to battle the dark forces. May I count on your help?”

The faerie blinked for a moment and hesitated. “You want me to fight dark forces? Are you out of your mind?”

“Possibly.” Wincet smiled gently. “I believe you can help us. I feel that you are more than you seem.”

“Well, I am Dallys. I was just in the Forest near the old temple on the world of Gardara. I am just a fae but I will help with what I can.”

“What are your powers, Dallys?” Wincet asked. “The Fae have been known to have a range of abilities.”

“Fair enough.” Dallys nodded. “If I’m going to help you, you should at least know what I can do. I can enchant creatures and deflect most magic. I also have some knowledge of healing and herbal remedies.”

“Excellent! Borne, of course, wouldn’t need your assistance but Nellis here would.” Wincet waved her to follow. “We were on our way to get some refreshment.”

Dallys walked toward the others on the opposite end of the bridge. “I think I could use a good stiff drink.”

“I’m afraid that I don’t keep spirits on hand.” Wincet held up his hands. “I was never one for drink.”

Dallys sighed and shook her head. “I knew this was too good to be true. I guess I can have to deal with that.”

They had turned and started to walk off the bridge when there was a whoosh near the portal. They turned back to see a female elf in black leather brandishing a dagger.

“Where am I? What am I doing here?” The elf waved the dagger. “Somebody better start explaining what’s going on.”

Wincet stepped forward. “My name is Wincet. I am a wizard and I summoned you to help defeat the darkness that is taking over the universe.”

“You’re kidding!” The elf looked angry. “You know if you had asked, I may have said yes but this is kidnapping. I know these things are one way so you need to send me back! Now!”

“I’m sorry but the spell I used to bring you here, choose you for a reason.” Wincet took another step forward. “You seem to be a skilled fighter. We will need those skills and we could also use your elven magic.”

“What do I get out of this?” The elf pointed her dagger at Wincet. “I usually get paid for my services.”

“I can offer you nothing but the satisfaction that you are helping drive the darkness out of the universe.” Wincet shrugged, “What is your name?”

“I am Tona of the planet Tolkarian. I am a master of the warrior’s arts. I have worked as a mercenary for the last few years.”

“It is nice to meet you Tona. I’m Dallys from Gardara.”

Tona nodded to the fae. “You! Shapeshifter what is your name? And you android?”

“I’m Nellis from Caspire.” Nellis held out his hand in greeting but pulled it back when Tona glared at him. “It’s nice to meet you. I think.”

“I am Borne of the Metalis Alliance.” Borne looked at Wincet. “Is she the last one or are there more coming?”

Wincet thought a moment. “The portal should have closed by now unless…”

A man tumbled through the portal and nearly fell into Tona. He scrambled to his feet. He picked up a cane that had come through the portal with him. “Sorry Miss.”

Suddenly, the portal closed. Everyone looked at the spot where it was in surprise. That was the last thing that anyone was expecting.

Tona held the Dagger to the man’s chest.

“Whoa! I didn’t mean to.” The man put up his hands. “I don’t even know where I am or what’s going on here.”

“Who are you?” Tona asked.

“I’m Captain Jace Donalu. Where are we? What is this place?”

“This is the planet Centra.” Wincet answered him.

“Planet?” Jace looked around. “You mean I’m not on Earth anymore?”

“Yes.” Wincet held up his hands. “Just relax Captain Donalu. You have no reason to be afraid. You are here for a reason. Tell me. What do you do on Earth?”

“I was a police investigator in a place called London.” Jace looked at the others and frowned. “What kind of creatures are they?”

“Faerie. I’m Dallys from Gardara” Dallys waved.

“I’m Nellis. I’m a shapeshifter from Caspire.” Nellis pointed to Borne. “That’s Borne. He’s an android.”

“I am from the Metalis Alliance.” Borne nodded.

“Who are you?” Jace looked at the elf with the blade at his chest.

“I’m Tona. I’m a mercenary and an elf from Tolkarian.” Tona lowered the blade. “The old man is Wincet. He is the wizard that brought us all here to do his bidding. I assume since the portal is now closed that we are the entire army against the darkness.”

“Yes. That would be correct.” Wincet looked around at the faces looking at him. “Let’s go to my home and have some food and drink. We can talk more about what I am planning. I confess that I wasn’t expecting so many of you. There must be more worlds in this universe that are threatened by darkness.”

“That’s just wonderful.” Jace gave Tona a wary glance as he walked to the opposite end of the bridge.

The group followed Wincet back to his home and took seats around the hearth. After Wincet gave them food and drink, they started to settle down.

“Now that you have all had time to think and some refreshment, I’d like to talk to you about why I summoned you all here.” Wincet looked around at each of the people in the room. “I have noticed that the darkness is starting to overtake the all the realms of our universe. I believe that we can fight the darkness.”

“We can fight the darkness? Have you looked at us?” Jace motioned around. “We don’t look like we can fight a chicken.”

“What’s a chicken?” Nellis looked confused. “Why would we fight one? Are they evil or something?”

“No but they are very good when roasted with gravy.” Jace sighed.

“His people roast things.” Dallys looked at Nellis. “I wonder if he wants to roast us.”

“I doubt you would taste good, with gravy or not.” Jace chuckled.

“Let the crazy wizard finish, please. I, for one, want to know why he really brought us here.” Tona held up her hand to silence Nellis.

“I assure you that I am quiet sane for a man of my years.” Wincet was really wondering if he was sane at all as he looked at the strange collection of creatures before him. “Why don’t I show you what I have seen? Come with me to the Vision Cave and I will show you the darkness spreading over the realms of this universe.”

The group stood up and followed Wincet as he led them down the path to the Vision Cave. When they arrived, Wincet pointed to the opening in the top of the cave.

“There! There are fewer lights than there were last night.” Wincet looked at the others. “Will you help me bring back some of those lights in the universe?

“What you’re talking about is science not magic powers. The suns are dying that’s why they go out not because of magic.” Jace looked at the old man. “There is no such thing as magic.”

“My friend, you are wrong. Magic and science is the same thing.” Wincet grinned. “Knowledge is what gives both of them power.”

“So, if we agree to this then what?” Tona asked.

“You will become the Dark Army. You will undo the damage caused by magic, or science if you prefer, to bring hope and light back to the people of those worlds.”

“If we don’t want to do it?” Dallys asked tentatively. “Can we go home?”

“If you want to go, I will send you back where and when you came from but I want you all to sleep on the decision for now and give me your answers in the morning.” Wncet started to walk to the passage way out of the cave.

“I have nothing to go back to but deactivation.” Borne spoke up. “I will help.”

“I have no where better to be either.” Nellis looked at the others.

Dallys wrinkled her nose. “I’ll stay but only for as long as it takes to set things right.”

Tona looked at Jace. “Do you want to stay too?”

Jace shrugged. “I haven’t been able to make a difference where I live but if I can do it somewhere else then maybe…”

Tona sighed. “I guess I’m in too.”

“Good!” Wincet smiled. “We have magic, technology, battle skills, investigative know how, and … um… resourcefulness in our favor. Now we just have to find something for your first task.”

Wincet looked up into the sky. “I know exactly where to send you first. We start in the morning. I need you all well rested and ready for anything. Come! I will show you to your rooms.”

They followed the wizard back into the house and to rooms. They all settled down to sleep.

Early the next morning, Wincet looked into the gazing globe in his work room and saw a familiar face doing exactly what he was trying to prevent, dark magic.

After breakfast, Wincet and the dark army assemble on the Traveler’s Bridge.

“I have your first task here. Follow these instructions to the letter.” He handed a paper to Tona. “You must complete this without getting caught. We cannot be exposed before we even get started.”

“Don’t worry. We will get it done.” Tona looked at the others. “If they fail, I will just kill them.”

“No killing!” Wincent held up his hand. “Just bring then back and we will deal with them here. Go. I will open the portal to the planet that where you will find one of the greatest evil wizards in the universe.”

Tona led the others to the far end of the bridge as Wincet held up his arms and spoke a spell to open the portal.

“Good luck! Be careful!” Wincet watched as they stepped through one at a time. “You’re going to need it.”

The portal closes and Wincet looked up at the sky. “Hestrick will never see it coming.”

Dark Realms #1: Hestrick’s Amulets
Word Count: 3016

A storm was raging angrily when a pounding was heard at the door. A young boy ran to the window beside the door and looked out.

“Master! There is a traveler at the door.” A boy called out to the old man studying a book on a work table.

“Let him in and stoke the fire.” The old man got up and moved a wooden chair closer to the fire.

The boy opened the door and let in the traveler. He pointed into the other room. “My master is through there. He will give you a place by the fire.”

“Welcome friend. I am Hestrick of the dark order of wizards.” The man was tall with dark hair and sparkling dark eyes. “It is a raw night to be out. Sit by my fire and dry yourself. “

The young man said nothing but bowed his head in greeting to his host. He sat in the chair by the fire to get warm and dry out.

Hestrick raised a curious eyebrow at the strangers silence then instantly dismissed it. He walked over to a large dark sphere and gazed into it and laughed.

The blurry image showed Wincet working on potions at a work table. There were no poisons or papers to show what he was making but he was concentrating intensely.

“What is that fool Wincet trying to do now? I swear he is an embarrassment to all proper wizards everywhere.” Hestrick gazed into the sphere again and shook his head before he walked away.

“I have been a dark wizard since I was a pup. That seems like many millennia ago but in truth it was only one. I remember when I was a boy sitting at the knee of Lexathic conjuring my first ball of dark magic.” Hestrick sat down in a large chair. “Wincet was right beside me and he was a natural at it. It used to make me so angry that my ball would pop. Of course Lexathic would scold me and tell me to try harder.”

“Lexathic was an old bastard that loved to use his walking stick on young boys heads. I wasn't sorry when I heard that one of his students blew him up for it. Brave thing was stripped of his powers and exiled to some planet somewhere. Now I have students of my own. Boy! Bring some wine! My guest looks thirsty.”

A boy ran in carrying a tray with wine and two goblets. He held onto the wine as he sat the tray on a nearby worktable. He poured the wine and brought it over to the man and his master.

Hestrick took the wine and raised his glass in a silent toast to his guest. He took a sip and waved the boy back to wherever he had come from.

“That boy was left on my doorstep five years ago as payment of a debt owed. Between us, I would rather have gotten gold.” Hestrick chuckled. “He has little aptitude for the dark arts. He conjures butterflies when he thinks I'm not looking. He must be related to that buffoon Merlin.”

“My Lord, what can you tell me about your work?” The man asked. “I have never met a dark wizard before.”

“My work? I was the one who brought the dog soldiers to Kless. I fashioned them after a mongrel I had once. He was a surly old cur. The dog soldiers did justice to his memory. They terrorized the planet for decades. When I refused to end the terror without payment, Wincet undid the spell.” Hestrick ground his teeth for a moment. “He didn't even ask for payment. He just walked in and undid the spell. What kind of a wizard does that?”

“Was that your only great deed?” The young man asked quietly.

“No I have had many great deeds. I froze the women of the planet Hern. Just the women, mind you. I told their loved ones that I would thaw them out for an annual payment of one million pieces of gold.” Hestrick laughed. “It would have been a glorious plan, save one thing. Once I froze them, I couldn't unfreeze them without killing them.”

“Did all the women die?”

“No. Wincet undid that spell too.” Hestrick sighed. “I don’t even know how he knew about it.”

“Maybe he has spies.” The young man shrugged.

“He’s not clever enough to have a following.” Hestrick shook his head then suddenly perked up. “He must have taken the gazing sphere from our mentor. I wonder what else he has of Lexathic’s belongings. That old fool had some very powerful magical objects in his possession. I wish that I had taken a thing or two when I left.”

“Do you have nothing of great magic here?” The young man looked around.

“I do! I have procured the largest collection of dark magic amulets anywhere.” Hestrick stood up and sat his goblet on the table next to his chair. “Come friend, I will show them to you. There is one carved from a dragon's tooth. There’s also one made from a snow giants pinky toe. That was the one I used when I froze those women on Hern.”
The young man got up and followed the wizard to a locked door down a dark hallway. The old door creaked when Hestrick put the key in the lock and pushed it open.

“We shall need a little light in here. Light!” Hestrick smiled as several torches lit around the room at once. “There! Now you can see all my treasures.”

The walls of the large square room were lined with hooks full of amulets.  There were even several racks standing in the interior of the room at least eight feet high. They were loaded down as well with amulets of all shapes and sizes.

“Impressive. There must be hundreds of them.” The young man walked around the room.

“Two thousand and twenty eight to be exact!” Hestrick exclaimed proudly. “I bet Wincet doesn't have even a fraction of what I do. He wouldn't know what to do with them anyway. He's turned away from dark magic. He had gone to the light.”

“You speak of this wizard, Wincet a great deal. Is he your sworn enemy?”

“Well, he's certainly not my good friend.” Hestrick laughed. “Come, look at this one. It renders all green plants inedible. It’s perfect for causing a planetary famine.”

“There was a famine on Stek. It killed nearly two million.” The young man looked at the old wizard. “Was that your doing?”

“Yes it was but that was before your time. Did your parents tell you of it?” Hestrick looked and the young man and squinted. “Maybe your grandparents?”

“It was my grandparent but they weren't from there.” The young man turned away from the wizard's gaze. He pointed to an amulet with a large lapis stone carved into a beetle set in the center. “What does this one do?”

“Ah! That one causes a plague of beetles. I used it on Blinot. Thousands died of hunger and sickness before the frost came and killed the beetles. Do I know you, friend, or maybe your family?” Hestrick was starting to get suspicious of the young man that had come in from the storm.

“No.” The young man shook his head. “I have never heard of you before this day. Do you enjoy killing people?”

“I take pleasure in it as all dark wizards do.” Hestrick shrugged. “Come, I will have the boy prepare us a meal. You can rest here until morning. I don't think the storm will clear any sooner. “

“The storm is not something you conjured?” The young man seemed confused. “Don't wizards like to control the weather?”

“Yes but I let this planet decide its own weather.” Hestrick led the young man out into the hallway. He snuffed out the torches with a flick of his wrist and locked the door behind them.

Hestrick never noticed the mouse run across the floor into the darkened room before the door shut. He also never felt the young man lift the key off his belt as they walked back to the room where their wine was waiting.

The young man held the key in the palm of his hand and it disappeared in a puff of smoke. He looked at the old wizard to make sure he hadn't seen what just happened.

Hestrick was unaware of the magic being used around him. The arrogance of the wizard was his weakness just as Wincet had predicted.

Inside the room full of amulets, the mouse slowly grew into a small creature. “Dallys! Where are you?”

“I'm over here.” A spark of light suddenly turned into a faerie. “Which ones are the ones we want?”

“There are thousands of them. We don’t have time to go through them all before the storm passes.” He looked around. “There is only one thing to do. We have to take them all.”

“Oh. That’s just great. It’s a good thing this is a magic pouch. Dallys dangled a brown silk pouch with a symbol on it. “Nellis, this is crazy. Wincet gave us a list. We should just get the ones we came for.”

“You need to be more flexible. I’m the thief and I say that we can do this and we need to do it quickly.” Nellis started to drop amulets into the pouch. Are you sure all of these will fit?

“Yes. The pouch shrinks them down to nearly nothing.” Dallys put an amulet in the bag. “Wincet is going to have a fit and I’m going to send him your way when he does.”

“He will see the sense in it. Trust me.” Nellis put a handful of amulets in the pouch. “He may even thank us.”
Dallys scoffed. “We shall see.”

“It took more than a few minutes to put all the amulets in the pouch.” Nellis unlocked the door and he and Dallys slipped out into the dark hallway. “Nellis dropped the key by the door and shrank back into a mouse. He skittered through the crack under the front door.

Dallys put the pouch on her waist then snapped her fingers and turned into a speck of light. She floated close to the ceiling and slipped out via the crack at the top of the front door.

In the other room by the fireplace, the young man sat staring into the fire. All he had to do was wait out the storm and slip out the door.

“I remember, just a few years ago, I decimated a whole solar system. I used three different amulets to do that.” Hestrick bragged with a big grin on his face.

The young man took a drink from the goblet of wine and said nothing. The old wizard was beginning to get on his nerves. Hestrick was full of stories of death and destruction each more gruesome than the last.

When the storm started to slowly turn into drizzle, the young man stood to leave. “I must be going. I have imposed upon you far too long.”

“Nonsense!” Hestrick motioned for him to sit back down. “I haven’t given you supper. I insist you stay to dine with me.”

“I must go.” The young man started to walk to the front door then turned. “I shall not forget you and your gracious hospitality.”

“You should come back when you have more time. I have many more stories to tell. I can tell you were enjoying them immensely.” Hestrick smiled.

“I did and thank you.” The young man bowed his head and walked to the door and into the quiet wet world beyond the door.

Once outside, the young man walked quickly to a clearing in the woods near the wizard’s home. He took a deep breath and put his hands to his face then pulled them away revealing the elf’s true face.

“I’m glad you did that. It was starting to freak me out.” Nellis said from his perch on a low hanging branch.

The elf turned to glare at the shapeshifter. “It wasn't pleasant for me either. I wanted to put a dagger in that old fool five minutes after I got there.”

“Now! Now! Tona, you need to watch those violent tendencies.” Dallys poked her head from around the side of the trunk of the tree. “Where is everyone else?”

“We’re here. Borne got us lost.” A man came up the path. He held up a hammer with writing on it.  “We found the blacksmith's hammer right where Wincet said it was.”

“I used the map in my data banks. It is not my fault that you refused to listen to me Jace.” Borne looked around. “The portal should be opening soon. Did Nellis and Dallys get the required amulets?”

“We got all of them.” Nellis jumped down from the branch.

“What do you mean you got all of them?” Jace looked at Tona and Borne. “They took them all? How?”

“It’s a magic pouch.” Dallys patted the pouch tied to her belt. “It makes them tiny so they will all fit. Then when you take them out ...poof… they go back to their regular size.”

Jace looked impressed. He patted the hammer. “Maybe we should put this little trinket in there too.”

A portal of swirling mist opened up at the far side of the clearing.

“Time to go.” Tona walked toward the portal.

They followed Tona through the portal. When they all had stepped onto the bridge the portal closed.

“Let's go take this stuff to Wincet.” Jace looked at the hammer. “I think he has a plan for it.”

Wincet met them at the end of the bridge. “Good! You have the hammer. Did you get the amulets?”

“Did they ever.” Tona chuckled. “They took them all.”

Wincet looked at Nellis and Dallys. “All of them?”

Nellis nodded. Dallys patted the pouch and grinned.

Wincet started laughing. “Well done! I wish I could see the look on his face when he finds them missing. Maybe I should use my sphere and take a peek.”

“He watches you. He takes pleasure in making fun of what you are doing when he sees you.” Tona smirked.

“He only sees what I want him to. He can't penetrate the filtering spell I put on his sphere years ago. He doesn't even know it’s there.” Wincet grinned. “The old windbag is too arrogant to check for counter spells.”

“When did you do it?” Jace asked as he handed the hammer to Wincet.

“A little while before I came up with the plan to bring you all to this place.” Wincet looked at the hammer. “This is exactly what i need to destroy those amulets.”

“Why do you need that hammer and not the one in the shed?” Dallys squinted at the writing on hammer.

“This one was imbued with magic when it was forged.” Wincet looked at the hammer. “It is said that it can destroy any dark magical object. Those amulets are nothing but dark magic.”

Since they are all in the pouch, we can smash them all at the same time, right? Dallys held out the pouch to Wincet.

"Unfortunately, it doesn’t work that way. I wish it did. They will have to be destroyed one at a time. Wincet took the pouch. Let’s go to the workshop and destroy these. The sooner they are destroyed the better for everyone.

Wincet led them back to the house and into the workshop. He poured out the amulets onto the table and looked at Dallys and Nellis. You weren’t kidding. How many of these are they? There must be hundreds.

“Two thousand and twenty eight. “Tona rolled her eyes. “That old windbag was very proud of it. It took all I had to keep from running him through with my dagger.”

“I can imagine.” Wincet grinned. “He was a blowhard when we were young men. I can just imagine how much worse he is now.”

“How long do you think it will take to destroy all of these?” Jace looked at the pile of amulets on the table.

“I don’t know but they won’t get destroyed until we start swinging the hammer.” Wincet looked at the hammer. “Does anyone want to help me?”

“I have to sharpen my dagger.” Tona started walking towards the door. “Maybe next time.”

Dally and Nellis looked at each other and shook their heads.

Jace looked at the pile. “I would love to but I have a bad shoulder. Sorry.”

Wincet looked at Borne. “I guess it’s just me and you Borne.”

“I have to update my systems.” Borne followed everyone out the door.

Wincet grinned. “That was easier than I thought. I better get swinging.”

Hestrick pushed his dinner plate back and sighed. “That was unsatisfying. I need a little fun. I think I will cause a plague or maybe a famine.”

Hestrick stood up and looked for the key to the amulet room. He searched all of his pockets but he couldn’t find it. “I must have dropped it. He walked down the hall and spotted the key on the floor.”

“Ah! There it is! I wonder how I dropped this.” He bent down to pick it up. He walked to the door and opened it. “Light!”

The torches lit and the room was completely empty.

Hestrick looked around on the floor and up towards the ceiling. “No! No! No! No! Wincet! I had to be Wincet. But when did he do this? He couldn’t have gotten in here without me knowing. Could he?”

Hestrick ran down the hallway and back into the main room. He looked into the gazing ball and waited for the images to clear. All he could see was a pile of little pieces and the magical blacksmith’s hammer lying on a table in Wincet’s work room.

Hestrick clutched his heart and gasped. He destroyed them. He destroyed them all. Wincet! You bastard!
