Done and Faerie Dusted

The next day everyone slept late as was the custom on the first day of the New Year. Near midday there was a knock on Princess Endora’s door. Dionne opened it and bowed to Queen March as she let her in.

Princess Endora still in her dressing gown bowed as well. “Your Majesty, I didn’t expect to see you. I thought you left early this morning.”

“I wanted to see you, Princess. My son has informed me that he will not speak to me until I apologize to you for yesterday.” Queen March said. He face was pale and it evident that she hadn’t slept well. “He wished me to assure you that the betrothal will go on as planned.”

“Even though you do not approve of my choices?” Princess Endora asked.

“Paddrick reminded me that he will be your husband not I. If he is content with the way you conduct yourself then I cannot say otherwise.” Queen March sighed. “The signing of the betrothal agreement will go as planned and I will return to Wales afterward.”

“You must stay for the feast afterwards. It is my birthday.” Princess Endora said.

“I will stay but leave the next morning. Paddrick will stay on for a while if Queen Taralen allows it.”

“She will. She likes him.” Princess Endora smiled.

“I do hope you will accept my apology.” Queen March said.

“Yes Your Majesty. I accept it.” Princess Endora said seriously. She knew it wasn’t easy for Queen March to give it.

“I will leave you to rest.” Queen March turned to leave but turned back. “How did you know I wanted something else?”

“It is standard negotiating.” Princess Endora shrugged. “A betrothal agreement is a treaty after all. I’m sure you weren’t expecting to be called out on it.”

“No I wasn’t. You are very wise for you age. I see that now. Good day Princess.”

“Good day Your Majesty.” Princess Endora bowed as the Queen left the room.

“That was odd.” Dionne said.

“Indeed.” Princess Endora sat back down on the settee and sipped her tea.

There was another knock on the door. Queen Taralen’s maid handed Dionne a note for Endora. Dionne took it to her mistress.

“Grandmother wants to have lunch with me and Paddrick. I need to get dressed.” Princess Endora sighed. “I want the plain dress with the collar, Dionne.”

Twenty minutes later Princess Endora and Prince Paddrick were sitting in Queen Taralen’s private dining room.

“I wanted to talk to you both before the agreement is signed tomorrow. I will be a long betrothal. You will be married in late summer.” Queen Taralen looked at Princess Endora. “Your sisters and their husbands will be invited and treated as part of the Royal family. I will allow you to invite your friends as long as they can behave properly. Prince Paddrick the same goes for your friends as well. This will be a large affair with representatives from all the Fae Courts. I just wanted to make sure you understand what will happen. If there is any doubt, I want to know now before anything is signed.”

“I think we are fine with the arrangements, Your Majesty.” Prince Paddrick said. “We will have plenty of time to get to know each other even better.”

“Queen March has asked me to remind you to have a chaperone at all times. I know that Dionne has been acting in that capacity and I am fine with her fulfilling that duty. I think I may assign a helper for her so that her chores do not suffer.”

“She would like that. She always worries about the state of my chambers when we go out and about.” Princess Endora said.

“You will need a manservant while you stay here, Prince Paddrick. I will arrange a man for you.” Queen Taralen said. “Is there anything I forgot?”

Princess Endora and Prince Paddrick shook their heads.

“Then let us dine.” Queen Taralen smiled at them.

The next night at the beginning of the feast for Princess Endora’s birthday the two queens signed the betrothal agreement. Crown Princess Cara signed next then Prince Paddrick and finally Princess Endora.

Prince Paddrick and Princess Endora looked at each other. They knew it would be a very interesting year.

Fireworks Faerie Style

Everyone stayed in their chambers resting for the feast that night. The Palace was quiet most of the morning even though there was lots of activity. The Great Hall and the balcony overlooking the courtyard were decorated for the feast and ringing in the New Year. Large kegs of spirits were placed in the courtyard for the celebration.

Queen Taralen would ring in the New Year with the ringing of a bell then the fireworks would start. It was the same every year, weather permitting. This year the weather was clear and very cold. Even the faeries around the castle were gearing up for the grand party.

Dionne was looking through Princess Endora’s cupboard for a dress for the party. “My Lady, what do you want to wear?”

“The gown with the flowers.” Princess Endora sat on the settee by the fire sipping tea.

“Not the ball gown from the Midsummer Ball? You should have had a new gown made.”

“I may as well wear it again. It seems like such a waste to wear a gown only once.” Princess Endora said. “I will wear the fur cloak for the bell ringing.”

“The one with the gold clasp. I have that out already.” Dionne said as she pulled the dress from the cupboard. “It’s a bit poofy for this.”

“I’ll leave out one of the petticoats and I want the crown that was Grandmother’s.”

“Not the one you wore with it before? Do you want your bracelet too?”

“Yes. What are you wearing?”

“I don’t know most likely what I have on.” Dionne said.

“Wear your dress with the scrolls on the bottom. It’s pretty and your beau will like it.” Princess Endora teased.

“I’m sure Prince Paddrick will like what you are wearing.” Dionne smiled.

The two faeries were startled by loud voices in the corridor. One of the guards was calling out to the another.

“Dionne, see what that’s about.” Princess Endora said but before Dionne could take a look a Sidhe Guard opened the door and looked in.

“Pardon Princess but Queen March is requesting your presence in Queen Taralen’s study. She is very upset about something. You may want to take you dagger.” He said sheepishly.

Dionne snorted in amusement.

Endora tucked a small dagger into her boot for just in case. “You better come too.”

Princess Endora and Dionne followed the guard to the Queen’s study.

Queen March was standing in the room. It was obvious she was upset.

“Endora, Queen March wants to know about your training.” Queen Taralen said. She wasn’t looking too happy either.

“I work with a sword and a crossbow. I also ride both horses and unicorns. I can throw a knife accurately most of the time.” Princess Endora was confused. “Why is my training being questioned? Is there a war?”

“I don’t think it’s appropriate for a Princess to train and I want you to stop if you want the betrothal to go through.” Queen March demanded.

“Mother!” Prince Paddrick shouted. “If she wants to train I see no harm in it.”

“I suppose you think I should sit on my bottom and have babies.” Princess Endora said. “I will be Queen someday and I need to be able to handle myself. If you don’t think that training is important, just go now.”

“Endora!” Queen Taralen warned.

“Really Grandmother. We are a warrior race. It is in our blood. I am just following in my father and great grandfather’s footsteps. I am a warrior and I will not change. What is it that you truly want, Queen March? I am sure this is a ploy to gain a concession in the agreement. “

Queen March looked like she had just gotten caught with her hand in the candy jar. “I … I want nothing more than what is proper.”

“I don’t believe you. I don’t think that anyone in this room does.” Princess Endora said. “Go back to Wales if you must but don’t expect anything more than what has already been agreed upon if you stay.” With that Princess Endora turned and left the room.

“Well I never had anyone be so rude to me. Paddrick we are leaving. Collect your things.” Queen March said.

“I will not. I am here to marry her not to deal with your petty foolishness. You are the one that is being rude and these people are too polite to tell you.” Prince Paddrick said. “You are going to sign the agreement or I will ask her to marry me without one.”

“Paddrick!” Queen March was shocked.

Queen Taralen smirked. “It seems you have no choice because I know that Endora will say yes to him.”

Queen March stormed out of the room in a huff.

That night at the bell ringing, Queen March was subdued. The New Year came in just as the fireworks started. Prince Paddrick gave Princess Endora a kiss on the hand on the balcony and the crowd cheered.

Tea With The Queen

Princess Endora walked into the private sitting room of her grandmother expecting to be given a lecture.

“There you are. How was the skating?” Queen Taralen was already sitting on the settee with the tea laid out on the low table.

“It was all right. I don’t like the cold.” Princess Endora laughed. “Was there something you needed to talk to me about?”

“Yes.” Queen Taralen handed her a parchment. “I wanted you to look this over before its signed.“

“What is it?” Princess Endora asked.

“It’s the betrothal agreement. Queen March and I worked out the agreement but if it is not acceptable to you then I will not sign it.”  Queen Taralen told her.

Princess Endora started to read the document carefully as Queen Taralen poured tea for the two of them. She had excused her maid so that she could be alone with her granddaughter.

“This seems fair.” Princess Endora said. “But this part where we will be given a part of the Tylwyth Teg Kingdom I don’t understand. That is not the usual, is it? That I receive part of their lands?”

“No. It’s not but if you read further we will provide a garrison of Sidhe Guards in return. There have been some problems with bandits and ruffians in their borders. I think it is a good agreement. He is far down on the line. We can’t get much.” The Queen explained.

“I see. Does it matter that I think I love him?” Princess Endora said.

“Don’t say that in front of Queen March or she will want more than this. She wanted quite a bit at first until I reminded her that he will not take the throne unless most of her family is dead. That made her be quiet for a few minutes.” Queen Taralen chuckled.

“Grandmother! That was not nice.” Princess Endora frowned. “She just wants what can get just like any other parent negotiating a betrothal.“

“That is very generous of you considering she wanted nearly your weight in gold at first.” Queen Taralen held out the plate of sandwiches to her granddaughter. “I think their coffers are low. All those children it’s no wonder.”

Princess Endora gave her grandmother an amused look as she took a sandwich from the plate. “I don’t intend to be the mother of a garrison. One maybe two and I am done.”

“Sometimes it doesn’t work out that way Endora. Enjoy any blessing you receive.” Queen Taralen said. “I had always wanted more than one child but Danu only blessed me with your mother. If you love him then there will be no end to the children.”

“Grandmother!” Endora exclaimed.

Queen Taralen laughed. “Endora, you are blushing.”

“I haven’t even properly kissed him yet.” Endora took a sip of tea.

“That is good to hear.” Queen Taralen looked amused. “Queen March doesn’t want him to hold hands with you until this is signed. So the agreement is satisfactory to you?”

“Yes. When will it be signed?” Princess Endora asked.

“At your birthday feast I think.” Queen Taralen said.

“Queen March will want a separate feast just for the signing.” Princess Endora looked at the plate of sandwiches for another.

“There are too many celebrations close together for yet another feast.” Queen Taralen said as she refilled their cups. “What other things have you planned for next year?”

“I want to go on a quest or two but I’m not sure how my future mother in law will feel about that.” Princess Endora said. “I want to find the Crystal Sword. It is a tragedy that it is missing from the temple. People who steal from temples have no soul.”

“Indeed. Just don’t go alone.” Queen Taralen said. “I doubt the Northern Court will be much help after the ‘Prince Brandon’ matter.”

Princess Endora nodded. “I know. Is that all you wanted to talk to me about? The betrothal?”

“I just want to spend some time with you really. You have been so busy. There is something else but not today.” Queen Taralen smiled. Now was not the time to tell her about the decision that was made that will directly affect her, “Tell me more about this quest.”

Princess Endora and Queen Taralen talked and laughed for the rest of the afternoon until they need to dress for supper.

Supper with the queens was a bit awkward but they all managed to survive. The next day was the last day of the year and there was a party to attend

Skaters Waltz

The family party went on until late so Lady Aura and Prince Dragas took the trio back to the Mist Passage in a sleigh. The sleigh belonged to Lord Drake but he was staying with Lady Aura for the night. The ride was short and soon they were waving at Lady Aura and Prince Dragas as they drove away.

“That was very….strange.” Prince Paddrick said.

“I don’t think anyone’s family is normal.” Princess Endora said.

“That is quite true but your family is so different.” Prince Paddrick said.

“Because we are not all fae?” Princess Endora asked as they walked into the courtyard.

“It certainly makes for interesting parties.” Dionne said from behind them carrying the gifts Lady Aura gave them.

Endora laughed. “I’m sure Klaus and Grimmy didn’t mean to get that drunk. Puff was a bit tipsy too. He must have gotten into the hard cider.”

“Your sister has pet dragons and she can turn into one as well. That is very different.” Prince Paddrick said.

“They aren’t pets. Aura is their guardian. She was given responsibility of them by the Matrons of the sanctuary because she is a magickal being. It is a great honor to be the guardian of a dragon.” Princess Endora told him. “I would love to have one. Maybe when I’m queen.”

“Tomorrow I was hoping to go back to the lake and go skating.” Prince Paddrick said. “Would you and Dionne like to come with me?”

“Dionne?” Endora looked back and Dionne nodded. “We would love to come. I’m not a very good skater.”

“I will keep you from falling.” Prince Paddrick promised. They entered the palace and Prince Paddrick bowed and left them as he went to his chambers.

“I think it’s too late for that.” Dionne said.

Princess Endora nodded as she watched Prince Paddrick go up the steps to his chambers. “Let’s get some rest. We can use those fur muffs we just received.”

“And the wool scarves.” Dionne agreed. “Not to mention the buckskin gloves.”

The next morning they met Paddrick at the stables. They were taking the sleigh out again. It would be better for the horses if they dropped them off and picked them up later instead of standing in the cold.

They arrived at the lake and pulled on the skating boots. Dionne was a natural as she glided along the frozen lake. Princess Endora wasn’t so graceful.

“It like flying only your feet are on the ground.” Prince Paddrick grabbed her hands and lead her out into the middle where the ice was smoother. “f you need to use your wings to lift up a bit.”

“Oh I see.” Princess Endora fluttered her wings so that she was barely touching the ice. “That is much better.”

“That is cheating.” Dionne called out.

“Just until she learns how to maneuver a bit.” Prince Paddrick said as he held onto Princess Endora’s hands.

“Thanks for showing me. I might actually like it after a while.” Princess Endora shivered. “Now what can be done about the cold?”

Prince Paddrick laughed.

They stayed for a few hours until the sleigh came for them. Prince Paddrick and Princess Endora were having supper with the two Queens that evening.

Dionne hoped to catch up on her chores that afternoon while the Princess was at tea with Queen Taralen.

Mistletoe And Penguins

The next morning, Princess Endora, Dionne and Prince Paddrick headed out of the mist passage for Lady Aura’s cottage in Rosemont. Lady Aura asked them to come early to help set up the food and do last minute things.

“I have a question.” Dionne said as they were walking.

“Well?” Endora looked at her.

“Remember the counting calendar that we picked up for Aura?”

“Yes. Was that the question?”

“No but remember the way Prince Dragas reacted to the penguins in Alton?”

“Yeah. was that the question?”

“No. my question is was that counting calendar possibly for Prince Dragas?” Dionne finally asked.

“Oh.” Princess Endora wrinkled her nose. “That better not had been for him or I will be disowned for sure.”

“I don’t think Lady Aura will be upset with you.” Prince Paddrick said. “She is your sister.”

“She also has a temper.” Endora told him. “There isn’t anything that I can do about it now.”

They walk on in silence until they reach the cottage. They walk in and hang their cloaks and warm by the fire.  Lady Aura had wrapped gifts and placed them under the tree.

“Good! You’re here. I have to go to the community center for a minute but I will be right back.” Lady Aura picked up two packages from the tree threw on her cloak. “Could you sit the food out on the dining table? Everything is in the kitchen on the counter.”

“Sure. Will everyone be her soon?” Princess Endora asked.

“Any minute! Dragas went to get Puff and Argonne from the sanctuary early this morning. Myra is doing better so Puff will be able to come home for a day or two.”

“That is wonderful news.” Princess Endora smiled.

“I’ll be right back.” Lady Aura rushed out the door.

“Who are Puff and Argonne?” Prince Paddrick asked as he followed them into the kitchen.

“Puff and Argonne are her dragons.” Princess Endora said as she handed him a platter of sandwiches.

“Dragons?” Prince Paddrick looked a little upset. “How big are they?”

“Average sized really.” Dionne said as she picked up a large bowl of fruit salad. “Puff has always been smaller than the rest. Argonne is a bit bigger.”

“He and Myra are about the same size. The earth dragons are always smaller, I think.” Princess Endora said as she picked up a platter of faerie cakes. “Aura made a lot of food I wonder how many are coming.”

“Lots. There are six crocks of cider.” Dionne told them.

“That means everyone is coming.” Princess Endora looked at Paddrick. “They all must want to meet you.”

“I hope I don’t disappoint them.” Prince Paddrick said as the put the food on the dining table.

“Uncle Drake and Aunt Benna must be coming. There is dragon fruit in that bowl.” Princess Endora said. “I wonder if Aura’s cousin Darrick is coming.”

“Maybe King Harrick, too.” Dionne said as Paddrick started to get nervous. “Lady Aura is now a part of all three magickal families and she unites the two oldest thrones on Ogham-Duir.”

They make one more trip to the kitchen and start to walk into the front room.

“Freeze!” Dionne called out.

“Why?” Princess Endora turned to look at her maid.

Dionne pointed up at the top of the doorway. “Mistletoe! You have to kiss.”

Prince Paddrick and Princess Endora looked at each other awkwardly. They gave each other a quick peck on the cheek.

Dionne started laughing but stopped as Prince Dragas came through the door with two dragons.

“Don’t touch the food yet you two. Is Aura at the community center still?” Dragas looked around.

“Yeah.” Princess Endora told him. “The table is ready and ….. “

Lady Aura came through the door with Lady Victra and Klaus as well as two other people, a man and a woman. Klaus and the other gentleman were carrying large sacks full of packages.

“Most of us are here so let’s start the celebration.” Lady Aura said. “Oh I should introduce you. Prince Paddrick of the Tylwyth Teg this is Lord Drake Draconis, my father and Lady Benna Aster, my aunt. My cousin, Darrick wanted to be here but he is needed at the sanctuary.”

Prince Dragas passed out mugs of cider. “First we toast to family and friends. Then we eat.”

Aura laughed.

There was a knock at the door and Lady Victra opened it to reveal Lady Starr and her son, Kyo and Grim Ranger. Dulcina slipped in behind them.

“Are we late, Aura?” Lady Starr asked. “I had to round everyone up.” She looked at Dulcina who shrugged apologetically.

“No.” Aura hugged her friends and handed a candy cane to Kyo. “I made blood pudding.”

Lady Starr laughed showing her fangs. “That is our favorite. Isn’t it Kyo?” Kyo nodded and handed a bottle of starrberry wine to Lady Aura.

“Where is the hard stuff?” Grim asked as he looked in the mug Dragas handed him.

“In the kitchen.” Klaus whispered as he patted grim on the shoulder. “Come with me.” He and Grim Ranger headed off to the kitchen.

“Oh, this is Prince Paddrick of the Tylwyth Teg. He and Endora are getting betrothed soon.” Lady Aura said quickly as she went to get Puff away from the faerie cakes.

Lady Starr looked surprised. “Really?!”

Princess Endora nodded. “Paddrick this is Lady Starr of Vusamsern and her son, Kyo. These two are Grim Ranger and Dulcina Thottie.”

“Nice to meet you all.” Prince Paddrick smiled.

“No husband?” Prince Dragas asked Lady Starr.

“There is some trouble to the north in the Thunderbird territory. He and some others went to help out. There is a dispute over nesting areas with the Eagles. I hope they can settle it without fighting.”

“That wouldn’t be good for anyone if the Thunderbirds and Eagles get into it. Maybe the Phoenixes should have stayed home.” Lord Drake said thoughtfully.

“Pyros is always up for a good fight.” Lady Starr said.

“No more war talk. It’s time for presents.” Lady Aura said as she grabbed Dionne’s hand and pulled her along. “Dionne, help me.”

Paddrick looked around the room at the people and wondered what kind of family he was marrying into. Puff took that opportunity to come sit at his feet and stare up at him. Paddrick looked around and sighed.

Snow Fae

Dionne, dressed in her new gear, and Princess Endora came down the front steps of the palace to meet Paddrick.

“Ah our chaperone!” Prince Paddrick said. “Hi Dionne.”

“Don’t think of her as a chaperone. She is just our friend coming along for a little fun.” Princess Endora told him.

“I could go back and scrub the floor.” Dionne said as she thought about her chores.

“Nonsense!” Prince Paddrick said. “Dionne, why don’t you tell me all her secrets?”

“If I told them then they wouldn’t be secrets.” Dionne looked at Prince Paddrick.

Prince Paddrick started laughing. The sleigh is over near the stable. The stable hands said they couldn’t bring it into the courtyard.” He offered his arm to both of them.

“The snow isn’t deep enough here. It would scrape the cobbles.” Princess Endora said. “Grandmother would have a fit if she saw it.”

“The Queen had some replaced just last spring for the same reason.” Dionne reminded her mistress.

“I remember. I thought she was going to have a fit then. It was a visiting dignitary from the Northern Court. Whooshed right in and when the snow melted there were big scrape marks everywhere. I can’t say that I blame her. The stones come from a quarry on the other side of Ogham-Duir. They are not easy to get.”

“I never had to think of things like that. I’m so far down the line there isn’t a hope that I will ever be on the throne.” Prince Paddrick admitted.

“If we marry, you will be. I will need a King.” Princess Endora told him as Prince Paddrick helped her into the sleigh.

Dionne hopped in without help and Prince Paddrick got in next to Princess Endora. The driver took off as soon as everyone was settled. They took the long rode around the Realm. They stopped near a frozen lake to have a snack. Dionne pulled a basket from under the driver’s seat. She carefully took the crock with the hot chocolate and poured it into the cups.

“How is it still hot?” Prince Paddrick asked as he looked into the cup.

“The inside crock is in a larger on that has coals in it. Lady Aura showed me how.” Dionne said.

“Handy!” Prince Paddrick smiled.

“She has to keep some of her poultices warm when she heals. Princess Endora explained.

Dionne looked around and started to roll the snow into large boulders.

“What are you doing?” Prince Paddrick asked.

“I’m making a snow Fae.” Dionne said. She built a figure out of snow, wings and all. She shaped it a sword and a big fat belly.

Dionne, that looks like the Captain of the Sidhe Guard. Princess Endora said as she poured a second cup of hot chocolate for her and Prince Paddrick

“That is exactly who it is.” Dionne smiled that they recognized her sculpture. “Do you think I made him too stout?”

“No. I think he looks perfect. Now come and have some more hot chocolate.” Princess Endora poured more steaming liquid in Dionne’s cup.

“Gladly.” Dionne took a sip and sat on the log next to Princess Endora. “What was Queen March upset with you about, My Lord? I heard she was yelling at you.”

“Who told you that?” Prince Paddrick looked a little panicked.

“I’m a servant. We know everything.” Dionne laughed. “My beau is a footman. He heard her yelling at you.”

“When did this happen?” Princess Endora looked at her suspiciously.

“Last night after supper.” Dionne said as she took a sip.

“No. When did you start walking out with a footman?” Princess Endora asked.

“Two weeks ago.” Dionne said. “We are just talking. It’s nothing really. He just got his hat handed to him by a kitchen maid. You know the one that…….” Dionne winked.

“Oh that one.” Princess Endora nodded knowingly. Princess Endora turned to Prince Paddrick. “So why was she upset with you?”

“I forgot to do something.” Prince Paddrick took a sip of his hot chocolate and avoided her eyes.

“You are coming with me tomorrow to the family party, aren’t you?” Princess Endora asked

“I wouldn’t dream of missing it.” Prince Paddrick said.

“Oh well. We should head back.” Endora stood up and brushed off her cloak. Dionne picked up their mess as Prince Paddrick helped Princess Endora into the sleigh.

They got back to the castle as the sun was starting to fade.

Second Thoughts and Unwanted Gifts

“Endora….” Queen Taralen started.

Princess Endora held up her hands. “Grandmother, he has always been a perfect gentleman I have no worries about my honor. Besides we are quite compatible.”

“I was hoping you didn’t like him. She is insufferable. Always with the rudest questions and …. “ Queen Taralen sighed. “She just gets on my nerves.”

“Well she isn’t the one I will be betrothed to, is she? Don’t worry. it will all work out.” Princess Endora looked at the settee and saw the strangest thing. There was a feathered cloak made with many different colored feathers. “Was that a gift from Queen March?”

“It is hideous.” Queen Taralen sank down in the chair behind the desk. “So you want to marry him?”

“Yes I think so. It’s not what we planned for me but he is Royal.” Princess Endora picked up the cloak and looked at it more closely. “It’s pretty.”

“It has color.” Queen Taralen said.

“The world has color, Grandmother. Why is it that we only wear white?” Princess Endora asked

“The Northern Court wears white. We are an extension of them in a way.” Queen Taralen looked at her granddaughter. “I think you would like some color in your clothes.”

“Some but this is a bit too much. Maybe a sash here or a tunic there.” Princess Endora put the cloak back on the settee.

“You will be Queen someday and then you can change the dress of the Court.” Queen Taralen shook her finger at Princess Endora. “I know that you have let young Dionne wear color on more than one occasion.”

“She looks good in green with her wings and coloring.” Princess Endora said. “Not while we were here of course. I wore blue at Aura’s wedding.”

“Maybe a sash wouldn’t be so bad.” Queen Taralen said with a smile. “What will I do with that?”

“Wear it for the Bell Ringing at the New Year. It’s warm and you always complain of the cold during the ceremony.” Princess Endora laughed. “Besides it will be dark and no one will be sober enough to notice.”

“Endora!” Queen Taralen laughed with her granddaughter.

“I must go Paddrick invited me on a sleigh ride in the morning.” Princess Endora told her grandmother.

“Take Dionne. Queen March wasn’t happy that you two went off without a chaperone.” Queen Taralen told her.

“I will. Dionne could use some fun too.”

“Indeed!”

Princess Endora bowed and left for her chambers.

Perfect Gift

Most of the servants were usually given a gold coin and a small basket of goodies at Yule. There were a few that were given more. The Captain of the Sidhe Guard was usually given a new cloak and gloves by the Royal Family. The three personal maids of the Royal Family were usually given cloth for new dresses.

The two Queens and the Prince and Princesses sat as the gifts were being distributed. The Castle servants and the kitchen maids had all received their gifts. The Captain of the Sidhe Guard graciously accepted his gift that left the three maids. The Crown Princess gave her maid the gift of cloth and some silver thread for embroidery. Queen Taralen’s maid  received the same thing. Dionne stepped up and a large bundle was given to her.

Dionne looked confused. “My Lady?”

“Happy Yule, Dionne.” Princess Endora said with a big smile. “Go ahead and open it.”

Dionne opened the bundle and gasped. There was a heavy wool cloak, a tunic with a wool vest and breeches. “My Lady, this is too much.”

“No it isn’t. You do more than any maid here so your gift should reflect that.” Princess Endora stood and hugged her then whispered in her ear. “The boots are in my chambers.”

Princess Endora sat back down and smiled at Dionne.

“Endora, you spoil her.” Queen Taralen said. “But you are correct. She has more than the usual duties being your maid.”

“I don’t understand. What does that mean?” Queen March asked.

“Dionne travels with Endora on her quests. She also acts as a companion.” Queen Taralen told the visiting monarch. “One is rarely far from the other.”

“She wasn’t with her today.” Queen March said.

“I was catching up on my chores, Your Majesty. Dionne said quickly. “Besides I think that the Prince and Princess wanted to talk privately.”

Queen March looked at her son. “Well?”

“We went to pick up a last minute gift and we went to the tavern to have a warm drink.” Prince Paddrick said. “We didn’t need a chaperone for that.”

Queen March looked annoyed at her son as if he was supposed to do something he hadn’t

Princess Endora looked at Queen Taralen, who was looking rather annoyed. “I agree. They were in public the entire time they were out.”

Princess Endora nodded. “We were, Your Majesty. The tap room was full as well.”

“Next time I expect you to be chaperoned.” Queen March hit Prince Paddrick on the arm with her fan.

Prince Paddrick rubbed his arm and nodded.

“I have some business to attend to. Please excuse me.” Queen Taralen dismissed the servants and turned to Endora and whispered. “I want to see you in my study.” She stood and walked over to the door and looked back to see if she was coming

Endora nodded, bowed to Queen March and followed her grandmother into the Royal Study.

Santa Crackers

Horace brought the two Fae mugs of warm cider and a plate of cheese, bread and some winterberry jam. On the tray was a long cylinder wrapped in bright colored paper.

“Horace, what is that?” Princess Endora asked.

“It is a cracker, My Lady. The mundane’s celebrated their winter holiday with them and Father Christmas. Really, he looks just like the Holly King to me. Mundanes are so strange. I have a few left over from their party last night. I though you may like to share it with His Highness.” Horace leaned over and whispered to Princess Endora. “He doesn’t look much like a Prince does he?”

Princess Endora giggled. “Thank you but how does it work?”

“You each pull on an end until it busts. They have candy in them and trinkets. If you need anything just let me know.” Horace bowed and left them.

“So shall we?” Prince Paddrick picked up the strange thing and held it out.

“Why not?” Princess Endora grabbed the other end and pulled. The cracker burst and candy spilled out on the table. Princess Endora picked up a toy and looked at it. “What’s this?”

“Looks like a bird.” Prince Paddrick said.

“It’s pretty. I can’t seem to get away from birds lately.” Princess Endora smiled. “Aura would call it a sign.”

“And the birds mean what?” Prince Paddrick leaned over towards her.

“I don’t know. I just think they are pretty.” Princess Endora smiled.

“Just like you.” Prince Paddrick said.

Princess Endora blushed. “We should be getting back soon.”

Prince Paddrick nodded and sipped his cider. “Not quite yet.”

“Agreed.” Princess Endora took a sip of her own drink.

They returned to the castle a few hours later just as the gifts were being given out to the servants.

Dragon Iron Works

Prince Paddrick and Princess Endora met in the courtyard the next afternoon and walked through the Mist Passage to the Village of Brimstone.

“Are you going to tell me where we are going, now?” Princess Endora said.

“There was is a blacksmith shop here. Aura told me about it. I need to pick something up I ordered. Good! It’s open.” Prince Paddrick said as he spotted the sign handing outside the shop.

“She loves that place, you know. They have swords there that are forged by the dragons breathing on them.” Princess Endora told him.

“Is that what you carry on quests?” Prince Paddrick asked

“Sometimes but it can be a bit heavy if you have to fight for a while. I still like my short sword. But there are times that a long sword is called for.” Princess Endora thought a moment. “Paddrick, you should train with me.”

“I think that is a wonderful idea. Especially, if we are going to go on more quests. I want to be able to handle myself. Here we are.” Prince Paddrick said as he entered the blacksmith shop.

“Hullo! There you are. I thought you were coming tomorrow.” The blacksmith said. “But never mind, the order is ready.”

The blacksmith took a small cloth bag off the shelf and handed it to Prince Paddrick. The man smiled at Princess Endora as Prince Paddrick looked inside the bag. Paddrick nodded and handed a coin purse to the blacksmith.

“That should be enough.” Prince Paddrick said.

The blacksmith poured the coins into his large palm and smiled. “Yes, My Lord. It is very generous. Thank you.” He bowed to the Princess. My Lady, if you will pardon me I need to get back to work.”

“Of course.” Princess Endora smiled and nodded.

Prince Paddrick put the cloth bag into his vest pocket. “Let’s go to the tavern and get something to warm us up.”

“That sounds really good.” Princess Endora said. “Are you going to tell me what is in the bag?”

Prince Paddrick shook his head. “It’s for my mother.”

“Then you should ask a woman’s opinion about it.” Princess Endora nudged him.

Prince Paddrick laughed and held the tavern door open for her. “Two mulled ciders please. He called out to Horace as they took seats by the fire.

The Yule Feast

Princess Endora got out of the Throne Room as soon as she could and went to her room. Dionne was already there preparing her a hot bath. She had slipped out before the Captain of the Sidhe Guard left to get Prince Paddrick.

“Why is Queen March here? Paddrick never said she was coming.” Princess Endora burst into the room.

“I’m sure he didn’t know.” Dionne said as she picked up the clothes that Princess Endora was throwing on the floor as she undressed.

“Well, that is going to shock him for sure, then.” Princess Endora said. “I was hoping to meet her dressed properly and when everything was about to be settled. You know after Yule.”

“Maybe she is here for the feast tonight. I’m sure the Queen invited her.” Dionne said as she looked through the cupboard for clean underthings and a court dress for the princess.

“Grandmother said nothing to me about inviting her.” Endora dunked her head in the hot water and scrubbed at her hair.

“It will be fine.” Dionne started to lay the clothes out on the bed.

“Not that one, Dionne. The one with the sash. I want to wear the broach.”

Dionne nodded and went to exchange dresses.

“Queen March was wearing a beautiful blue gown.” Princess Endora climbed out of the tub wrapped her hair in a towel and started to get dressed.

“I saw you looking at it.” Dionne said. “It was beautiful. There were flowers embroidered on the train in gold. Did you see them?”

“Yes. I wish I could wear more than just white.” Princess Endora said as she looked at the dress on the bed and sighed.

A short time later, Princess Endora came into the Throne Room and bowed to the two Queens. Princess Paddrick was there and looked uncomfortable in his Court clothes.

“There you are! I was just about to send someone for you.” Queen Taralen said. “We are just about to go to the Yule feast.” She turned to Queen March. “My daughter has been organizing it for days.”

Queen March smiled. “I’m glad I arrived just in time. Come Paddrick. Princess Endora is waiting for your arm.”

Prince Paddrick looked sheepishly at Princess Endora and offered her his arm.

Princess Endora gave him a knowing smile as she took his arm. They followed the two Queens into the Great Hall.

The tables were full of food and decorated with white cloths with gold embroidery. If Princess Endora didn’t know better, she would think it was a wedding feast.

Queen Taralen raised her goblet and made a toast. “Happy Yule to everyone!”

The musicians started to play as the guests dug into the mounds of food on the tables.

Princess Endora nudged Prince Paddrick who was sitting beside her. “Aura wants you to come to the family party. It’s at her cottage in Rosemont.”

Queen March leaned over. “Who is this ‘Aura’?”

“She is my sister.” Princess Endora told her. “We have different fathers, Your Majesty.”

“Taralen, you have another granddaughter?” Queen March asked.

“I have two others. Cara was married to a Draconian and had two children by him.” Queen Taralen admitted.

“A dragon man? How interesting! Why are they not here?”

“They have other obligations, Your Majesty. They are both High Priestesses.” Princess Endora told her.

“Paddrick, have you met them?” Queen March asked her son.

“Yes Mother. They are quite normal.” Prince Paddrick said as he took a sip from his cup. He was getting embarrassed by his mother’s rude questions. “Endora, I have to pick up something tomorrow. Would you like to go with me?”

“I would love to. Just let me know what time to be ready.” Princess Endora said.

“Not until the afternoon. I think we will all need our rest after this party.” Prince Paddrick said with a sigh.

Princess Endora nodded as she took a sip from her goblet. “I agree.”

Well This Is A Surprise

Princess Endora and Dionne followed the Captain of the Sidhe Guard in silence. Princess Endora was a little worried. It must be something very important to call them back to the Palace on such short notice.

As they walked into the courtyard they saw a strange carriage in front of the palace steps. Princess Endora rushed past the Captain of the Sidhe Guard into the Throne Room. She was more worried about the summons than a strange carriage in the courtyard.

“Here she is now.” Queen Taralen smiled to the woman in a bright blue gown who had her back turned to the door.

“Majesty, what urgent matter did you wish to see me about?” Princess Endora said breathlessly as she bowed to her grandmother.

“I’m afraid that I am the cause of your summons.” The woman turned and smiled at her. “I am Queen March of the Tylwyth Teg.”

Princess Endora looked up with wide eyes. She was meeting her future mother in law looking like something that has been in the stable for a week. “Your Majesty, welcome to our Court.”

“I was expecting to find Paddrick here but your grandmother says he is not staying here. Do you have any idea where he may be?” Queen March asked.

“He is in Brimstone. He is staying at Brimstone Tavern. They rent rooms over the taproom.” Princess Endora told her.

“That sounds like my son.” Queen March looked at Queen Taralen. “Could I trouble you to have your Captain fetch my son?”

“It isn’t any trouble at all. Captain, please find Prince Paddrick and bring him to the Palace.” Queen Taralen directed the man.

“He will be in the taproom. He was expecting me for lunch.” Princess Endora told him.

The Captain of the Sidhe Guard bowed and left to fetch the Prince of the Tylwyth Teg.

The two Queens looked at each other and shared a knowing smile.

 Was That A Flake?

Princess Endora Dionne and Lady Aura finished wrapping the gifts that went under the tree just as the first flake of snow fell outside.

Dionne was the first to notice that it was getting dark in the front room. She looked up and sighed. “It’s snowing again.”

“It’s almost Yule of course it’s snowing.” Endora said as she looked out the window. “I’m supposed to meet Paddrick at Brimstone Tavern.”

“I’ll send a message to Horace to tell Paddrick to come here.” Lady Aura said as she picked up a scrap of wrapping paper.

Before she could enchant the paper, there was a knock at the door. Lady Aura smiled and went to answer it. “It’s probably him now.”

The Captain of the Sidhe Guard stood there with apologetic look on his face. “I’m looking for the Princess, My Lady.”

“She’s here.” Lady Aura waved him inside.

“Princess Endora, the Queen requires your presence as a matter of urgency.” The Captain said stiffly.

“What is it Captain?” Endora said as she went to get her cloak. “Is there something wrong?”

“No Princess but I need to get you to the palace as quickly as possible.” The Captain said. “I was sent to escort you.”

“Then we should go immediately. Dionne?” Endora looked at her.

Dionne nodded and retrieved her cloak.

The two faeries waved to Lady Aura and went out the door.

The Captain bowed to Lady Aura and followed the two faeries out.

Back to the Bazaar

“Aura, you can do the tree. Dionne and I will do the list.” Princess Endora looked at her friend who nodded in agreement.

Princess Endora went over and took her cloak from the hook and handed Dionne hers.

“Is that acceptable to you, Dionne?” Aura asked as she handed Dionne the list. “I know you were cold last night.”

“Yes it’s fine.” Dionne said as she looked at the list. “Where should we get some of these things?”

“At the Rose Petal Bazaar. Dionne, take the blue cloak instead of yours. It’s warmer. Really Endora you need to make sure she has proper clothes for these trips you take.” Lady Aura scolded her sister.

“You’re right. I promise to be more diligent in the future.” Endora handed Dionne the blue cloak instead.

The two faeries headed off to the Rose Petal Bazaar with the list. After about an hour they had everything but one thing which they have no idea of where to get it.

They returned to the cottage with their arms full just as Lady Aura put the last of the ornaments on the tree.

Dragon!?

Princess Endora and Dionne hadn’t noticed the dragons had been missing until that morning.

“The Sanctuary is having a Winter Solstice gathering. Both of them went to stay up there for a few days. They will be back for the Yule party.  Myra isn’t well again and they wanted to stay.” Lady Aura said.

“Will she die?” Dionne asked.

“I don’t think she will see spring. The arthritis is affecting her heart. Puff and Myra were the youngest of the hatchlings brought to Ogham-Duir. It’s a shame. There are not many of the original group left. Just Puff, Myra, Candy and Argone are all that are left of the original ten.” Lady Aura told them.

“When are you getting your dragon, Little One?” Dragas asked.

“I don’t think I can have one. Grandmother can’t abide them. She says they frighten her.” Princess Endora looked into her tea cup. “But I would like one someday. Maybe when I am Queen, I will have one. Paddrick doesn’t like them much though.”

“So the betrothal will go through?” Lady Aura asked. “How do you feel about it? I know that you were upset at their first attempt.”

“She is in love with him.” Dionne said as she spread jam on a slice of still warm bread. “He loves her too.”

“Dionne!” Endora was surprised at Dionne.

Dragas laughed. “You owe me a gold coin, Aura.

Aura kicked her husband under the table.

“Ow! I told your sister that you were in love, Little One. She didn’t believe me.” Dragas laughed as he rubbed his shin.

Princess Endora blushed. “I didn’t think it showed.”

“Oh it shows on you both.” He kissed Lady Aura on the cheek and smiled. “I have to go. Duty calls. Harrick wants me to coordinate the gifting of the children that were not able to get to the party. There were a few that were too sick to come to the Palace.”

“That reminds me. I need to get the gifts on Puff and Argone lists.” Aura said

Rosemont Beautification Project

The next morning as Princess Endora and Dionne traveled through Crystal Spires, they saw more of the wreaths that had been on Princess Endora’s door at the Palace. Every business and municipal building had one.

When they reached Rosemont, they saw that someone had been busy there as well. The lamp posts had been decorated in pink and silver ribbons with wreaths of winter berries at the top of each post. It was all quiet festive and tasteful.

Princess Endora looked at Dionne and laughed. “I can see that Aura had some influence here with all the pink.”

“You are just as bad as her. If you didn’t have to wear white all the time you would be in all sorts of colors.” Dionne said.

“Yes I would.” Princess Endora laughed. They arrived at Lady Aura’s cottage to the smell of warm bread and hot tea.

Lady Aura and Prince Dragas were sitting at the table when they came in.

“Come sit down and have something to eat before we start on the tree.” Lady Aura told them.

The two chilled faeries took the bench next to the hearth and helped themselves to the food.

“Aura, where is Puff and Argone?” Princess Endora asked as she looked at the two empty pillows next to the hearth.

 Put a Wreath on it

When Princess Endora and Dionne got to Princess Endora’s chambers there was a big pine wreath on the door with a note.

“Who left this I wonder.” Princess Endora said as she pulled the note off to read it. “It’s from the Crystal Spires Merchants Guild. They must have sent several of them to the Palace.”

“They smell nice at least.” Dionne said as they passed through the door.

“Yes they do.” Princess Endora looked around at her chambers. All the chores had been finished. “Dionne did you twinkle your chores done before we left?”

“No I …. I wonder who did them all.” Dionne looked around in confusion.

“They are done so it must have been a present for you. Maybe one of the other maids did it as a Yule gift.” Princess Endora said.

“I wonder who though. I’m really aren’t that close to anyone that would want to do all my chores on top of their own.” Dionne said.

“Maybe it was one of the footmen. I think one of them has a crush on you.” Princess Endora teased as she went behind the screen to change into her nightdress.

Dionne turned down the bed in deep thought. She would have to ask around to see who it was so she could thank them.

Princess Endora came from behind the screen and got in bed. “Where are the extra blankets?”

“Here they are.” Dionne pulled three blankets out of the chest at the end of the bed and started to spread one out on the bed.

When Dionne went to spread the next one, Endora stopped her. “That’s enough. Take those two for yourself. I know it gets drafty in your room.”

“Thank you, My Lady. Dionne wasn’t going to argue she was still chilled from being in the snow. She picked up the blankets and blew out the candles and paused at the door. “Good night sleep well.”

“You do the same, Dionne.” Endora said sleepily.

Starry Night

Princess Endora and Dionne walked up the road to the Palace Gates. Everything around them is white and sparkly in the starlight. It was very quiet and dark. The fresh snow crunched under their boots.

“Isn’t it pretty tonight?” Princess Endora said with a love struck smile on her face. “It’s so peaceful.”

“Yes it is.” Dionne looked at Princess Endora. “That was very generous of Prince Paddrick. He didn’t need to get me a gift. I’m just your servant.”

It’s just his way. He knows you are loyal to me. He wanted to show his appreciation. Dionne, you know you are more of a friend than a servant.” Princess Endora told her. She sighed.

“I like him better than Prince Brandon.” Dionne said. “You like him too. I can tell.”

“I do.” Princess Endora admitted as she blushed. “He knows it too.”

“Will you go to Wales to live?” Dionne asked.

“No. He will live here because I’m in the direct line to the throne. He is fifth of sixth. I forget. It just makes more sense for him to live here.”

“Oh. I wonder if they are looking for us yet.” Dionne said.

“No. I don’t think so. It’s too quiet they most likely thought we were staying with Aura and Dragas.” Princess Endora said.

They reached the door to the palace just as it opens. The Captain of the Sidhe Guard stood in the open doorway. “Princess! The Queen just sent me to look for you.”

Dionne looked at Princess Endora who shrugged in response and smiled.

“Tell the Queen I’ve gone to my chambers.” Princess Endora told him.

“Yes My Lady.” The Captain of the Sidhe Guard bowed and went off to do as she asked.

“Let’s get to bed, Dionne. It’s been a long day.” Princess Endora headed up the stairs to her chambers.

Dionne followed her to help her prepare for bed before she heads off to her own chambers.

Loyalty Has Its Own Reward

Prince Paddrick and Princess Endora appear at the opening of the Mist Passage. Dionne pops in right after them.

“I was going to come find you tomorrow to give you something but I can give it to you now if you like.” Prince Paddrick said. “It’s a little something for Yule.”

“You already gave me a Yule gift.” Princess Endora said.

“That was an official one. This one is because I think you will like it.” Prince Paddrick said. “Do you want it?”

“She wants it. Don’t let her say ‘no’.” Dionne said.

Princess Endora shot Dionne a look.

Prince Paddrick laughed and took a small box wrapped in red paper out of his cloak. “Here you go. Dionne, I have a gift for you as well.” He took another package wrapped in green paper out of his cloak and gave it to Dionne.

Princess Endora nodded to Dionne to open hers first. In the box was a green glass dragonfly with red eyes.

“Thank you, My Lord! It’s beautiful.” Dionne smiled. She had never owned anything so beautiful.

“There is a gold cord to hang it on your tree.” Prince Paddrick said.

“I think it’s to pretty to only have it out once a year. I have a place I want to put it in my room.” Dionne said with a smile. “Thank you!”

“Now Endora, open it.” Prince Paddrick said.

Princess Endora sighed and opened the box. There was a clear glass ornament with a tree inside and little birds painted on the outside. Princess Endora gasped. “Is this the palace?”

“Yes it is. You will be seeing it soon.” Prince Paddrick said. “Now go on, before you both freeze.”

Dionne smiled and waved as she headed through the passage.

Endora blushed and gave Paddrick a kiss on the cheek. “Thank you for including her. She is very dear to me.”

“I know. Loyalty like hers is hard to come by and she is very loyal to you. I respect that.” Prince Paddrick said. “Go on. I will see you tomorrow.”

Princess Endora nodded and headed through the Mist Passage to the Tuathan Realm.
