 July Camp Nano 2024

I decided to sign in and post a project. I'm going to use this camp session to try and catch up on all my open fics. I have several unfinished ones.

I'm also going to try and catch up on some loose prompts from GYWO. There are a few Dove prompts that need my attention too.

I never thought that getting back into writing would be so hard. I just need to put my head down and get it done.

Worked on:
Unconventional Courtship: The Warlock’s Secret (Merlin)
Page 6 (Arrow)
Asa and the Dragon Egg (Original)

Overview:
I may not have reached my word goal but I managed to prove to myself that I can and should be writing.

I still have work to do. My Unconventional Courtship fic is due soon and I've almost finished a wip (Page 6) that's been sitting idle for far too long. I have other wips that need attention too.

I did surprise myself by writing some original fiction. I miss Ogham Duir and it was nice to revisit it. I also tried some new things. A fresh new idea is always motivating.

I'm trying to get back into a habit but I keep getting distracted by my issues. My health is still not great but I'm trying to work around it. I just need to keep trying.

I succeeded more than I failed. I am closer to my overall word goal now and I have written more this year so far than I had in the past two years. Overall, I did well and I'm happy with my progress.

 April Camp Nano 2024

I'm going to try Camp Nano this year. I don't know how far I'm going to get but every word is one more towards my yearly total.

I have several unfinished fics and a long list of prompts to do. I'd like to finish up some of these so I can work on new fics. I have ideas for new fanfiction and original fiction that need my attention.

I have a couple of smutmance novels that need work too.

No April Camp Nanowrimo this year. (2022)

I decided not to sign in for the April session of Camp. I don't think I'll be getting too much writing done with spring cleaning and house guests on and off all month.

I'm glad about the spring cleaning but i'll have to wait and see about the house guests.

In the meantime I will try to write and catch up on my word count for the year. I am way behind and I'd like to meet my goal this year. I have lots of prompts and wips to work on if I can find a little peace and quiet to work. If I can't then July will be the only chance I'll have to catch up this year.

To Nano or not to Nano …..That is the question 4/1

I really should do camp. My word count sucks and I am behind on all things. I haven't even signed in to Camelot Drabble in weeks. They must think I've died or something.

Ugh I suck at not being distracted. Too much yarn and streaming makes my word count very smol. Very very smol.

One other reason is Unconventional Courtship is early this year. I spent the morning finding summaries I could use. The last posting date is June 30. I think I could scrape up 1000 words on something by then. Hopefully it will be a decent 1 shot and not another epic WIP.

Sigh pray for me. I'm signing in and giving it a go. This could very well be a disaster but it's not like I have a lot of choice. (Very smol word count is making me anxious.)

 Expert Advice
Shelly walked to the edge of the roof and looked down. The body in the alley below looked like a ragdoll. "Why am I here, Jax?"

"I just wondered if you knew the guy. He was a PI from Vegas." Jax stepped back from the edge. "Not a way I would want to go. Why come all this way to off yourself?"

"He didn't. He was pushed." Shelly met the detective's questioning look. "He landed on his back on the far side of the alley. Don't they teach you basic physics in detective school? My dad taught me that if the land on their back, away from the side of the bulding, it's usually murder."

"You don't need to be such a smart ass about it." Jax sighed and looked around. "No signs of a struggle here."

"The roof is asphalt. There won't be scuff marks." Shelly looked at the edge of the roof itself. "No marks of any kind. He could have been dead and they just tossed him over for good measure." She stepped away from the edge of the roof and headed for the door. "You won't be needing me for this."

"Hastings…" Jax grabbed by the arm. "I need you to look at his case notes and see if that was the reason he was murdered." She handed Shelly a notebook in an unsealed evidence bag. "Just between us."

"Bryce said you were a good detective. Why are you giving me evidence that should have already been logged in and sent for processing?"

"Please just take a look at it." Jax looked around. "Its obvious your the woman for the job. Only another PI would understand a PIs notes."

"Fine. I'll call you as soon as I have something." Shelly tucked the notebook in her bag.

Character Someone in witness protection
Situation Hosts a dinner party for the first time
Prop Mardi Gras beads

Found
Eugene looked over the dining table. It was perfect! His guests would be impressed. He had worked hard on it all day.

He decided to have a little party for his new friends. It had been ages since he had a party. All he wanted was to have a little fun. He never had any fun nowadays.

Eugene had moved two times in the last six months. There was no way Kenny the Kibosh was going to find him in this little burg. This wasn't a place anyone whoever expect him to live. Hell, he didn't even believe he lived here.

The worst thing he had ever done was agree to testify against a known mob boss. He believed it was his civic duty to tell the truth. Boy, was he wrong.

If Eugene had known he was going to have to hide in the middle of nowhere for months, he would have never agreed to speak up. The trial was still months away and he was dying out here in the burgs.

The doorbell rang and Eugene went to the door. He smiled and opened the door. He went pale as soon as he saw who was at the door.

"How ya doin Gene?" Kenny pushed past Eugene and walked into the house. "Havin a do I see. My invite must have gotten lost in the mail."

"Hey Kenny. What are you doing out of jail?" Eugene asked as he shut the door.

"I'm on bail." Kenny grinned. He picked up a strand of Mardi Gras beads. "You like it here in the middle of nowhere?"

"Well I did." Eugene looked at Kenny's hand holding the beads. "Wanna stay for dinner? Since you're here and all."

"Naw just stopped by to say hi and if you rat on me …." Kenny stretched the beads between his hands. "I'll kill you."

"Okay." Eugene swallowed.

Kenny patted Eugene on the cheek. "Good man." He looped the beads over Eugene's head. "If I were you I'd find another place to live where noone can find you. Not even me."

"I'll look into it." Eugene looked at the beads around his neck. "Right away."

"Looks like you're going away party is going to be a blast." Kenny grinned. "No offense but I hope to never see you again, Gene."

"Uh huh." Eugene watched as Kenny walked to the door. He picked up a bottle of champagne. He gave it a swing and hit Kenny on the head. Kenny went down and out.

Eugene grinned. He pulled his emergency phone out of the drawer and called his handlers.

"Hey Frank. Kenny found me and he's out cold on my floor…… I know he's out on bail now. You need to come and get him. Now! I have a party about to start in an hour….. Should I tie him up? … Fine but you need to hurry. I don't know how long he'll be out."

Ten minutes later, Eugene held the back door open as Frank led Kenny out in handcuffs.

"Thanks Eugene. He won't get out again." Frank promised.

"Oh one more thing." Eugene looped the Mardi Gras beads over Kennys head. "I'm gonna have a great party now." He kissed Kenny on the cheek. "Thanks Kenny."

Dear Diary

 Nano Writing prompt 2:
Write a journal entry from the perspective of one of your main characters where they reflect on everything that has happened." — Dallas Woodburn, Camp Counselor

Dear Diary
I've just come back from speaking to the Ancient. There are no other seers in Ogham-Duir that I could go to. I'm related to all the others. He showed me my future in the pool. I was surprised and a bit disappointed.

The child I carry is a son. I even saw my son's face. He looks like my father. I suppose I am a little pleased at that.

I will have to keep my heart open for him. Its not his fault he is a boy and my first born. I wanted a daughter but I shall have to bear the disappointment and not let it be visited on his head.

Seeing the difficulty Aura is having to conceive, I feel guilty. I conceived so easily.  Aura and Dragas have been trying to conceive since they married. Even Victra conceived without much trouble. I think the delay with Victra and Klaus was due to shyness more than anything else.

Fawnard doesnt even know about it yet but Im sure he will be pleased. His own little warrior to train up. I should tell him soon. I will have to step back my training and he will want to know why.

Dionne already knows. She puzzled it out before I did. She's more worldly and has been by my side since childhood. She knows more about my habits and working than I do!

I hear someone coming and by the sound of things its Fawnard in hie armor. I think I will tell him now. No time like the present…..

The Exchange
The darkness surrounded the hooded female  figure. It was thick with dread and crackling with magick. The flickering candle flame she carried cast eerie shadows as she walked the forest path. It gave the slender trees the look of a wraith twisting in the wind. It was nearing midnight and she needed to hurry.

A second hooded figure joined her on the path. "I do not know why you insist on wearing a disguise. Surely this masquerade is not necessary. I feel wicked wearing this garb."

"It is tradition. Be silent! We are not alone in these woods. There is something lurking just beyond our sight." The first figure answered. "These woods are known to be haunted."

"I believe this is nothing more than a prank. Is this some kind of a trap? Why have you really lured me here?"

"Follow me. I swear to you this is not a trick. Stay close. The fog thickens in the valley." The first figure led the way to a stone crypt at the bottom of the valley.

"Wait, you're not taking me in there to be a meal for the undead, are you?" The second figure was fearful.

"There is nothing to fear. This place has been long forgotten by others of our kind."

The first figure took a key out of her pocket. She felt for the lock amongst the carved sigils on the door. "The ones who do remember this place believe it is tainted. Their superstition and fear has gotten the better of them." She found the lock and inserted the key.

The scraping of the lock gave them both chills. The first figure pushed open the door. It creaked and slowly opened.

Instead of being empty the cave like structure was filled with objects of magick. A stand in the corner held an ancient grimoire.  A cauldron sat cold and rusting next to it.

The most surprising thing there was a deep pit in the center of the space. A howl rose up from its depths. Something was inside the pit!

"What is down there?" The second figure peeked over the edge. She was met with a growl and a glimpse of fangs. "What manner of creature is that? Please tell me that I am seeing an apparition and nothing more."

"The creature is no spector. I brought you here to help me with the spell to cure its affliction." The first figure went to the book and found the incantation. "We must banish the evil within it. Come closer while I speak this rhyme." The first figure beckoned.

"I think this is foolish." The second figure came closer to the book.

The first figure spoke with intent and purpose. A scream filled the air then there was nothing.

A naked man appeared on the floor as if from thin air. An empty cloak lay on the floor where the second figure had once been.

"I told you that I would free you." The first figure pushed back her hood. She shook out her long red hair.

He sat up. "You did as you promised." He looked over at his former prison. "What of her?"

"No one will miss her. I chose her for just that reason." She picked up the cloak at her feet and handed it to him. "I will throw the key in the lake and no one will know what I have done."

The man donned the cloak. "Tomorrow. Tonight we will take time for ourselves."

"Yes my beloved." She allowed him to lead her out by the hand.

The door closed and the lock scraped closed.

All alone in the darkness, the second figure smiled. She knew a secret that her friend did not. She knew how to free herself. She raised her arms and called on all of her magick. In a flash of light, she disappeared into the night.

The next morning lovers were found dead by the lake. Ancient sigils were drawn in a circle around them. She had taken her revenge as they lay together in the moonlight.

Character Study 5 Dr/ William Stewart
Wise doctor who is in love with someone they shouldn't be

Dr. William Stewart looked at his wife across the dining room table. She didn't even look like the girl he married thirty years ago. She didn't even behave like her.

He looked at the ring on his finger and he felt it tighten. He knew it was just psychological but it felt real enough. He flexed his hand and the ring let go of its grip.

"Darling, are we accepting the Bensons invitation or not?" The silver haired woman asked from the other side of the table.

"What?" He looked up and realized she had been speaking to him.

"The Benson's are having an anniversary party. Shall I accept the invitation?" She asked again.

"I'm sorry. I wasn't paying attention. I have a patient on my mind." He lied. "Accept it. They always make a great deal of fuss about these things."

"It wouldn't hurt if we made a fuss about our anniversary too. Its next month."

"I know. Plan something fussy." He smiled halfheartedly.

"If I didn't know better I would think you're having an affair. As it is, I know you have no time for such nonsense. Are you having an affair?"

He watched her as she folded her napkin. "Maybe I should."

"What? With who?" She demanded.

"With the girl I married. That is if she still exists. I haven't seen her for a long time."

"I'm right here. Why are you talking such nonsense?  Are you having a stroke? Should I call Donald to come look at you?"

"I'm not having a stroke so there is no need to call our son. You've changed so much. I miss the girl you were. Whatever happened to her?"

"She grew up."

"So that girl is just a ghost…. a memory?"

His wife sighed. "What has gotten into you?"

He shook his head. "I'm just getting old. I still love that girl but as you said she grew up and now there is only a stranger where she once was."

"You don't love me anymore?" She blinked with surprise. "Is that what you're telling me?"

"I don't know what I'm saying." He rubbed his temple. His head was starting to pound. "I think I need to lie down."

"Yes. I think you do." She got up from the table. "I'm calling Donald. Maybe he can give you something to keep you from spouting nonsense."

He nodded and got up from the table. He took the stairs up to their room and laid down on tbe bed. He took a photo from the night table and looked at it.

Their wedding photo. Her golden blonde hair was full of curls under the traditional veil. He remembered his mother in law had insisted on a church wedding. He looked at himself in the photo. He didn't recognize the young man looking back at him.

"Donald is on his way." She said as she walked into the room. She sat down on the edge of the bed and took the photo from him. "We can't live in the past. Things change. People change. The best we can do is move along with the times and make the best of it."

"We have been doing that for decades. Aren't you tired of being someone else? I am. We were not born into the privileged life we have now. We lived in a one room flat while I was in training. Donald didn't even have a cot when he was born. You put him in a dresser drawer. We were happy with our lives then."

"We were young and silly. We thought love was all we needed."

"Isn't it? Do we really need the big house and the posh friends? Cant we go back to living in a one room flat and being happy just with our love?"

"I remember it less romantic than you do. Bills to pay. Leaking pipes. Loud neighbors with even louder children." She reached out and took his hand in hers. "If you weren't happy why have you waited until now to say something?"

"I don't know. I thought I didn't have a right to complain." He rubbed his temple again. The ponding was turning into a pain. "I'm just tired of pretending to be this proper gentleman.  All I want to do is play in the sea with that girl, the one I married. He pointed to the photo. Have a ninety nine and collect seashells."

She sighed. "Sounds nice. Maybe next month, we can go on holiday instead of having that fussy party."

"I want to go now. Dorothy,  we need to go now." He pleaded with her.

She frowned. "You'll need cover and I need to book a room."

"Somewhere cheap." He smiled. "We can go as soon as the arrangements are made."

She nodded. "Rest. I'll wait downstairs for Donald. I'll tell him about our plans. Maybe he can cover for you."

"Yes. Maybe he can." He closed his eyes. The pain started to subside a little.

She kissed him on the cheek and left him to rest.

A little while later Dorothy opened the front door for Donald.

"Mum, what's wrong? You said Dad was acting strangely." Donald put his medical bag on the table by the door and took off his coat. "What are his symptoms?"

"He didn't say but he was going on about when we were younger and how happy we were. He wasnt making sense. I left him to rest upstairs." She took his coat.

Donald grabbed his bag and went upstairs. He opened the bedroom door and found his father on the bed with his eyes closed.

"Dad?" Donald walked up to the bed when he got no response. He shook his father by the shoulder. "Dad?"

William opened his eyes and looked at his son. "I'm tired."

"Do you have any other symptoms?" Donald checked his pulse.

"I have a headache. I need a holiday. Would you be my cover?"

"Sure. When are you leaving?" Donald asked.

"As soon as you mother books a room. I'm getting too old. I need to….. I don't know what I need."

Donald smiled. "I'll tell Mum to book that room. I'm prescribing a holiday of a week or two. I will cover your patients until you come back. Now for that headache." Donald looked at his fathers eyes. He didn't see anything wrong. "You need sleep. Call me in the morning if its not better."

William nodded and closed his eyes.

Donald went downstairs. His mother was waiting for him. "He needs a holiday. He said to tell you to book a room."

"Is that all he needs?" She asked as she handed him his coat.

"Yes." Donald kissed her cheek. "Don't worry. He's fine. He has a headache so let him rest for a while. Bring him some sweet tea in a few hours. If he isn't feeling better or feels worse, call me."

She nodded. "Thank you."

Three hours later, Dorothy walked into the bedroom with tea and toast on a tray. She sat it on the dressing table and went to wake William up. She touched him and he was cold then she realized he wasn't breathing.

She rushed out into the hall to use the phone. She dialed Donald's number.

After a ring or two he answered. "Hello?"

"He's dead. Donald, your father is dead. I just came upstairs to check on him and he's cold and not breathing."

"I'll be right there." The line clicked.

Dorothy dropped the phone reciever and crumpled to the floor.

Donald arrived a few minutes later. He came up stairs and helped his mother to her feet. "Mum, go downstairs and wait for me there."

She shook her head. "No. I'm staying here."

"Fine." He hung up the phone then went to check on his father. A few seconds later he came out of the room and picked up the phone.

"I have to call the police.  There will be an inquiry because its a sudden death." Donald explained. "They will need to ask some questions. I'll stay with you."

"He said he missed us. The younger us. That's why he wanted to go on holiday. He wanted to go to the sea like we did when we were young."

"I remember those trips." Donald smiled. "Always a happy time."

Dorothy nodded and started to sob.

Donald held her and let her cry. He had to have missed something when he looked in on his father earlier. Was it a stroke? Aneurism? He should have seen something. Why didn't he see something?

William's spirit watched his family feeling guilty and in tears. He couldn't help them now. He was dead. He turned and walked into the light.

Character Study 3 Queen Jasa /Sir Brodwick
Honest Queen who has a grudge against your main character

Sir Brodwick, a tall dark haired knight knelt before the Queen. "Majesty, I beg your forgiveness. I never meant to offend."

"But you did and now here we are." Queen Jasa drummed her finger on the arm of her throne. "I have to admit for a moment I did consider lopping off your head. She sighed. Just for a moment. I have since reconsidered."

"Thank you, my Queen." The knight bowed his head. For a moment he thought he might be forgiven then he realized she was just mocking him.

"Then I thought of sending you to the Northern Border." Queen Jasa stood up and took a step toward the knight. "I reconsidered that as well. You would be out of my sight and out of my immediate control. Too good for you."

The knight kept his head down and dared not respond.

Queen Jasa walked up and grabbed Sir Brodwick's hair pulling his head up to face her. "I even thought of torturing you to nearly your last breath. I still might do it. I haven't decided yet."

Sir Brodwick swallowed hard and met her gaze. "I am truly sorry for my actions and my words, my lady. I didn't know you were there."

"This is my castle! Where else would I be?!" Queen Jasa released him and circled him. "To hear a knight of the realm say those things, shocked and appalled me. Who are you to comment on my choice of apparel?"

"I meant no disrespect. The gown did not compliment your beauty as it should. You are much too beautiful to wear such plain gowns." Sir Brodwick couldn't see her face but he was hoping his words were tempering her mood.

Queen Jasa slapped him on the back of the head. "Fool!"

Sir Brodwick bowed his head and waited for the Queen to exact her revenge.

"If you believe the gown does not suit me perhaps you should wear it instead. Yes." Queen Jasa laughed. "At the feast this very evening, you shall wear the gown and dance with every knight in attendance. We shall see if they think it suits you better." She slapped him on the back of the head again. "Out of mt sight before I change my mind and decide to torture you instead."

"Yes Majesty." Sir Brodwick got to his feet and bowed quickly as he rushed out of the room.

Queen Jasa sat back down in her throne and waved over one of her ladies in waiting. "Take the gown along with a corset and petticoats to Sir Brodwick's chambers. Help him dress for the feast. Make sure the laces are as tight as possible on the corset. Let him see what it is really like to be a woman."

The lady nodded and curtsied before leaving the room.

An old battle worn and scarred knight cleared his throat.

"Yes Sir Duncan?" The Queen turned to look at the old man.

"I believe he will be needing heeled slippers as well, Majesty." The old night smirked. "Something to match the gown, perhaps?"

Queen Jasa laughed. "You old war horse. I think you are enjoying Sir Brodwick's plight."

"I might be." Sir Duncan grinned. "I shall instruct the knights to do their duty and dance with him as much as possible. I may even take him round the floor myself."

Queen Jasa laughed. "You've always been my favorite, you know."

Sir Duncan chuckled. "I will endeavor to continue to be so, Majesty."

Thoughts:
I signed in to NaNoWriMo and posted a project (Works in Progress). I thought I should even though I wasn't trying that hard for the 50K word count. Well,  maybe I tried a little.

About the third week I was all worded out. I didn't finish the two WIPs I wanted to finish but I managed to do other things. I even did a couple of crochet patterns. I just don't have the word mojo for NaNoWriMo any more.

I'll keep trying but I don't think I'm ever going to get my word mojo back. You know,  I'm not sure I want it back. I wrote constantly back then. At least, now I do other things that make me happy as much as writing.

Screw the word count. Yes. I mean that.

I've decided not to do NaNoWriMo in the normal way. Instead of 50K of words, I'm going to focus on finishing projects in my WIP folder. The more I finish, the better. I've done this for NaNoWriMo before but I always seem to fall short of the word count. I will still do my usual NaNoWriMo style post at the end of November listing all that I've finished.

I really need to finish some shit. Let's start with the WIP from Hell.

I have both fanfiction and original fiction that need just one more chapter or a firm edit to finish. My prompt stash is full to bursting too. I may do a few of those as flash fiction to mix things up.

Hopefully by the first of December, I will have cleared out a few things to make room for ideas/outlines for future projects.

Look for a lot of posting in December (mostly fanfic) and Keep your fingers crossed!

Thoughts:

I completed my goal! But just barely. I had to push at the end to get it done but I did It!

Again, it looks like I wrote more than I did. Really, its a lot of small things and work on wips. I can see my word count sliding into nothingness. I'll try to keep it up in August.  Yeah…. who am I kidding?

Overall, its the distractions that are killing my word count. I try not to look at them but for some reason I always do. Yarn and the need to use yarn are my biggest distraction. Did I mention I have streaming services added to my Amazon Prime account?

My health is playing a part in this as well. I have no sleep schedule per se and my list of ailments is way too long to get into. I know I should write but sleep seems far more appealing. I've been blaming the heat but that's just an excuse.

As August approaches, I have a lot of posting to do. I'm behind on updating AO3 and LJ as it is. DW is well….DW. Fanfiction(.)net is still in need of a big update. This writing thing is hard work to keep managed. I wonder if they will ever have a camp for organizing your writing because I would never meet a goal on that.

Right now there are no plans for November but that could change. I always seem to find something to do for NaNoWriMo.[185]

Thoughts:
I hit my goal with 9 days to spare but I'm as done with things as I would like to be. I know it looks like I wrote a lot and I guess I did but I wanted to get more done. I guess I will feel like I could always do more.

I am looking forward to the next session on camp to do more. I still have prompts and stories to write. My word count is loving the boost from this session and I could always use another boost.

I was in a cabin, but I didn't interact at all. I don't know if it was me being shy or just not wanting to be social. I think I'll be on my own for the second session of Camp Nano.

 NANOWRIMO 2019
Goal: 50K
Final Word Count:
Title: The American Duke

Yeah. I gave up. It's not like me to do that but I couldn’t seem to get in a grove on the story. I was also distracted but other things.

I was hesitant about doing it this year and I should have listened to the little voice in my head that said give it a miss, but I didn't.

I'll continue to work on the story. I might actually finish it. If I do, I plan to self-publish on Kindle. It's not fanfiction.

I have one other that's just sitting there waiting to be edited that I'll self-publish too. I think after eight years of writing I need to suck it up and publish something somewhere other than AO3.
