Wash And Wear

It wasn’t uncommon for Princess Endora to have patrol duty but she usually had it in the daylight hours. The palace was a bit spooky in the moonlight, full moon light that is. She had just finished the first two lower floors and she was starting on the floor with the Great Hall, Throne Room and Council Chambers. It was going to be a long night.

“Princess!” Dionne called out as she came running up.

“What is it Dionne?” Princess Endora tried to sound annoyed but she was glad to see someone she knew. She didn’t realize how lonely a night patrol in the Palace would be.

“Your mother wants to see you. She is in the East Tower.” Dionne said.

“Is she at the scrying bowl?” Princess Endora asked.

“I think that was where she was heading. She says to hurry.” Dionne said.

Princess Endora hurried up the East Tower. When she arrived Crown Princess Cara was indeed at the scrying bowl. “What is it Mother?”

“Come take a look at this.” Crown Princess Cara waved her over. “I was having a strange feeling so I came to check the bowl. I thought maybe it was one of your sisters trying to reach me.”

The image was faint and blurry. Endora waved her hand over the bowl to make the image clearer. There in the scrying bowl was a ghost floating around in the dungeon.

“I was just there and I didn’t see a thing. There isn’t anyone down there and there hasn’t been for a long while.” Princess Endora said.

“Maybe you should check again.” Crown Princess Cara said. “The scrying bowl never lies.”

“Yes, but it could be showing the past or future too.” Princess Endora put both hands out and the image rose from the bowl. “That really doesn’t look like a real ghost. It may be someone just playing at being a ghost. I’ll go check it out.”

“Should I come?” Dionne asked. She really didn’t want to go but she had to ask.

“No stay here. I’ll be right back.” Princess Endora left and hurried down to the dungeon.

When she got there she heard singing. It was in Tuathe. So unless the ghost was one of a faerie, that proved it wasn’t real.

“Hello?” Princess Endora called. She got no response but she heard one of the cell doors creak. It was a good thing she wasn’t afraid of the dungeon. She walked a little further to the back and found a bed sheet. She instantly knew it was Dulcina. “Dulcina, get out here now!”

“Aw! How did you know it was me?” Dulcina came out of the last cell on the end.

"I'm sure ghosts don't really wear 500 count, finest Egyptian cotton lilac stripe sheets." Endora said. “These are the ones that are used in the Queen’s Bedchamber. Are you out of your faerie mind?”

“I didn’t think anyone would notice and I was going to take it to the laundry when I was done.” Dulcina explained.

“With two eye holes in it?” Princess Endora poked her finger though one of the holes.

“Um…Well I guess someone might notice that but I was just playing. Are you going to tell?” Dulcina started to look worried.

“My mother already knows she was at the scrying bowl and saw you. I will have to include it in my patrol report.” Endora said seriously.

“Endora!” Dulcina looked hurt. “I thought I was your friend.”

“You are but these are the Queen’s sheets. Why didn’t you take one of the regular ones?” Princess Endora looked at her and frowned.

“I wanted to be a pretty ghost.” Dulcina shrugged.

Endora looked at Dulcina like she was out of her faerie mind. “Get to your chambers. You are gonna need to be rested when the Queen issues your punishment. You better hope she is in a good mood.”

Dulcina nodded and hurried to her chambers. She had a feeling the Queen was not going to be in a good mood. She rarely was.

Endora took the sheet to the laundry and put a note on it that it needed to be repaired. At least Dulcina didn’t put arm holes in it too. She went back to the East Tower to tell her mother what she found.

The next morning Queen Taralen read the patrol report from Princess Endora and laughed. She motioned for a guard. “Send for Dulcina. I need to speak with her.”

The guard bowed and hurried off to get her.

“Maybe a week in the laundry washing the linens will teach her to behave.” Queen Taralen said under her breath then laughed softly. “I bet she was a very pretty ghost.”

Summary: Princess Endora and Lady Aura talk in the moonlight. .

Prompt: AWDT Halloween Quickies 9:: "Werewolves and wolf shifters are not the same."

Word Count: 505

Moonlit

Princess Endora stood on the top of the East Turret of the Crystal Fortress of Zestra. She had come to visit her sister, the Lady Aura. Lady Aura didn’t live at the Palace but she was here with her husband, Prince Dragas. They were here to visit the King and Princess Endora had come along.

Princess Endora looked at the full moon. It was a beautiful site. The small white houses of Alton were glowing in the moonlight. In the distance she heard a howl of a wolf. That was a curious thing since there were no wolves in her realm.

“Endora?” Aura said as she came up the steps.

“I’m here.”

“I brought you a wrap. The wind gets chilly this close to the sea.” Lady Aura handed her a woolen shawl.

“Thanks. I was getting a little chilly.” Princess Endora pulled the shawl around her. “Aura, why are those wolves howling?”

“It’s the moon. They all do it. Puff has even been known to howl at the moon a time or two. Well, after he made the mistake of drinking the hard cider instead of the fresh.” Lady Aura laughed. “Silly Dragon.”

There was another howl in the distance. Both turned to look in that direction.

“I didn’t realize there were so many wolves in Zestra.” Princess Endora said.

“There isn’t. Some are werewolves and some are shape shifters looking for some fun. They choose the animal they shift into. Those are most likely wolf shifters out near the Druid Academy. Dragas says it’s part of the training to turn into other creatures.” Lady Aura told her.

Princess Endora was confused. “I thought werewolves were wolf shifters.”

"Werewolves and wolf shifters are not the same." Lady Aura shook her head. “Werewolves have no choice. They are cursed. They must change with the rising of the full moon. A wolf shifter can change at will.”

“But there are werewolves in Zestra?” Princess Endora was surprised to hear this.

“Two or three, I think. They live in the Village of Dracon. They are not usually a problem.” Lady Aura shrugged.

“Are there any in Una?” Princess Endora asked.

“There was one in Brimstone Village, but he was killed near the City of Man. He was caught transforming. You know how the mundanes are. If they fear it, they kill it.” Lady Aura said with a hint of disgust.

“Why is that?” Princess Endora asked.

“I have no idea. Come, let’s go get warm. The air is colder than I thought.” Lady Aura laughed. “Cold as death. Samhaim Rites will be very chilly this year.”

“Are you going to Rites at Alban Isle?” Princess Endora. Their sister, Lady Victra, was the High Priestess there.

“No. we leave tomorrow. I will be leading the Rites at Blackstone Tor as always. You are coming?” Lady Aura asked.

“Unless a werewolf eats me.” Princess Endora said as she heard another howl in the distance.

The sisters laugh as they walk down the steps to the warm Great Hall below.

The Unexpected Visitor (Part 3)

Lady Starr and the three faeries walk into a bar just outside of the Grand Palace of Una. The bar was called the Crossbones and it’s not a cheery place like Brimstone Tavern. This was the mundane world. It was a very dangerous place for magickal creatures but this is where Lady Starr thought her mate would be.

“Are you sure this is the place?” Princess Endora asked Lady Starr as they walked in.

“Not entirely but he’s been here before after a burning.” Lady Starr said. “I see him he’s in the corner.” She nodded to a corner table where two men were sitting, one with fire red hair and the other had his head covered with a cowl.

“Is that Grimmy? Princess Endora asked. She recognized her friend Grim Ranger at the table. “What is he doing in this place?”

“How do you think Pyros found the place?” Lady Starr said.

“You two stay close and keep your cloaks on.” Princess Endora said to Dionne and Dulcina. “I mean it Dulcina. This isn’t the place for us so we must be careful.”

Dionne grabbed Dulcina’s hand and followed Princess Endora and Lady Starr.

“There you are. I had no idea you were here.” Lady Starr said to Pyros. “I have been looking all over for you. I even went to get help. I thought you were in trouble.”

Pryos looked at the faeries and laughed. “Yes I see. I was consumed earlier than I expected. I flew out of the tomb and found myself here. From what Grim says I’ve been here for a few days.”

“I’ve been keeping an eye on him. You know how weak he is after a burning.” Grim Ranger said sheepishly. They had obviously been drinking for a while there were several shot glasses on the table.

Grimmy, why don’t you come out side with us? It’s a bit stuffy in here.” Princess Endora said she steered the two faeries outside while Grim Ranger followed. What did he say happened?

“He said they were having a fight when he started to burn.” Grim Ranger said. “It was his anger that made him go early. How are you girls?”

“We are out of our element but we are fine. Aren’t we girls?” Princess Endora said.

Dionne and Dulcina just nodded.

“You need to get home I can take it from here.” Grim Ranger smiled.

“We can’t open a portal in the mundane city it’s against the law remember?” Princess Endora reminded him.

Ah yeah. Sorry. Let me walk you out of the city where you can cast the portal. Grim Ranger started to lead them towards Mist Mountain.

“Thanks Grimmy.” Princess Endora said.

They walked to the edge of town nearest the mountain and Endora pulled out her faerie crystal and a portal of swirling magick appeared.

Thanks Grim. You should get back they may need a referee. They both have tempers. Princess Endora said.

“As soon as you are through I’m heading back.” Grim Ranger looked around to make sure there wasn’t anyone around.

All three of the faeries gave Grim Ranger a hug before they went through the portal. They arrived in the field behind the palace.

“That was strange.” Dulcina said. “I didn’t know a phoenix could burst into flames when they are mad.”

“I suppose only if he were close to his burning then he could.” Dionne said. “Well at least we are home now.”

“Yes.” Endora said absentmindedly as she was already wondering what the next quest would be.

Prompt: AWDT Halloween Quickies: Prompt 5: "Boo!"

Scary Surprise

Dionne never liked the lower rooms of the castle. They were always so dark and full of shadows. The Armory was the worst. It was right next to the steps that led to the dungeon. There were always strange noises coming from the dungeon.

Dulcina knew of Dionne’s fear of the dungeon. She waited until Princess Endora had finished training for the day. That was when Dionne would carry the weapons back down to the Armory.  She hid just inside the alcove near the dungeon and waited.

Dulcina didn’t have to wait long. Dionne came around the corner carrying a crossbow and a quarterstaff. Dionne was looking around as she usually did to make sure nothing was around.

When Dionne got to the alcove Dulcina jumped out and shouted. “BOO!”

Dionne jumped and then swung the quarterstaff around. She made contact with Dulcina with a thump.

Dulcina landed on her bum. “Hey what was that for?”

“For scaring me you naughty thing!” Dionne said. “Why did you do that?”

“I was just trying to have a little fun.” Dulcina said as she got up.

“That wasn’t fun for me.” Dionne said.

An eerie voice from the dungeon said. “I enjoyed it.”

The two faeries screamed and ran as fast as they could.

“Really those two!” Princess Endora laughed as she came up the steps from the dungeon. She picked up the quarterstaff and crossbow and took them to the Armory before heading back to her chambers..

The Unexpected Visitor (Part 2)

The group rode all night until they reached Mist Mountain. Lady Starr stopped her horse and dismounted by what looked like a cave in the side of the mountain.

“It’s this way.” Lady Starr said.

The others dismounted and followed her.

Lady Starr led Princess Endora, Dulcina and Dionne down broken steps into a tomb. Princess Endora twinkled the torches lit.

“What is this place?” Princess Endora asked.

“This is the resting place of my Father.” Lady Starr said. “This is the last place I saw Kyo’s father. We were arguing and went out for air to calm down. When I came back, he was gone. There is no other way in but the way we came.”

Endora looked around. She took one of the torches from the wall and started to inspect the walls closely. “Maybe there is a secret opening somewhere.”

“I looked but there isn’t one.” Lady Starr said.

Dionne looked at the floor. There were burn marks and ash next to the tomb. “Lady Starr isn’t Kyo’s father a phoenix?”

“Yes he is.” Lady Starr looked at Dionne and smiled.

“Could he have just flown out while you weren’t paying attention? Dulcina asked as she looked at a spider web.

“A phoenix is a huge creature I would have noticed him.” Lady Starr ran her hand over the top of the tomb absent mindedly.

Princess Endora looked up at the ceiling. “Not if he went that way.”

“That’s too small he would never fit.” Lady Starr said.

“He would if he were a chick. There are scorch marks and ashes here.” Dionne pointed to the floor.

Lady Starr looked at where Dionne was pointing. “I thought that may be from the last time.”

Princess Endora brought the torch over to take a closer look. “These are fresh. He must have burnt then flew out the air shaft.”

“I think I know where he is.” Lady Starr said. “Let’s go.”

Artistic Interpretation

Dionne was in the Great Hall carving pumpkins into jack o lanterns for the Samhaim feast. She had already finished five and was putting the final touches on the last one when Dulcina came in carrying the candles to put inside them.

Dionne stood back and looked at her masterpiece and smiled. “There! It’s perfect.”

Dulcina looked at the pumpkin and asked. “Why did you carve the pumpkin like that? It doesn’t look scary at all. Jack o lanterns are supposed to be scary.”

“I just wanted to make one that was happy.” Dionne said with a smile. “He’s just glad to be included.”

“Well he’s gonna look out of place. I like this one with the fangs. It looks like Lady Starr.”

“Yeah I thought a vampire thing would be fun on a pumpkin.” Dionne said. “This one looks like Endora when she first gets up.”

They both giggled.

Crown Princess Cara came in and the two stop their giggles and curtsied.

“Well done, Dionne. You are very artistic. These will be perfect for the feast. Put the candles in but don’t light them. We shall wait for the feast for that.” Crown Princess Cara said. “Don’t forget to clear up the mess and take the seeds to cook.”

“Yes Your Highness.” Dionne said.

“I like that one.” Crown Princess Cara pointed to the happy one. “He seems like he is happy to see the ancestors. Very well done.”

“Thank you Your Highness.” Dionne smiled.

“Oh and you’re right that one does look like my daughter first thing in the morning.” Crown Princess Cara said as she left the room.

The two faeries looked at each other and burst out in giggles.

The Unexpected Visitor

It was a typical day in the Southern Court of the Tuathe Da Danaan; petitioner after petitioner came and went in an endless cycle of monotony.  Queen Taralen very graciously heard their requests and the Court Secretary made the appropriate notes. It was a sense of duty to her subjects that kept Princess Endora’s grandmother focused on the task.

That wasn’t the case with Princess Endora. She was nearly asleep. Her mind had wondered off thinking of the next quest she would undertake. That is until a familiar name was announced to the court.

“Lady Aithnie Starr of Vusamsern.”

Princess Endora sat up and smiled. It had been months since she had seen her friend.

Lady Starr walked forward her face covered by the hood of her cloak.

Queen Taralen stood and looked at the red cloaked figure standing quietly in front of her. “You are not Fae. Why are you here at my Court?”

“I am here to ask a favor of a friend, Your Majesty.” The cloaked figure said.

“You are no friend to me. I have never seen you before. I have never heard of your realm.” Queen Taralen said.

“That is because it is no more.” Lady Starr said with a hint of sadness in her voice.

“Grandmother, she is my friend.” Princess Endora spoke up.

Queen Taralen turned to her granddaughter. “She is not Fae.”

“I am …different.”

“I know her from my quests. She is also a great friend to Lady Aura.” Princess Endora said.

“Mother, if she is a friend of my daughters’ then she should be greeted with respect.” Crown Princess Cara said.

“You said you are different. What does that mean?” Queen Taralen asked the cloaked figure. She was still not convinced that this person was a friend of the Court.

Lady Starr pushed back her hood. Her stark pale skin looked paler somehow. She smiled showing her fangs. “I am a vampire and a demon, Your Majesty. I have come to ask for the help of Princess Endora. There is a quest I wish her to help me with.”

“What is so important that a vampire would risk coming within the walls of this Court?” Queen Taralen asked.

“I seek my mate.” Lady Starr said. “Kyo’s father is missing. I believe he is a captive.”

“I will help you.” Princess Endora said as she stood.

“Endora!” Queen Taralen looked surprised at her granddaughter.

“It will be all right, grandmother. I have a feeling I know where we are about to go. I will be home soon.” Princess Endora looked behind her. “Dionne, put some things in a bag and have everything ready in an hour.”

“Yes My Lady.” Dionne curtseyed and started to leave to prepare.

Lady Starr put her hand on Dionne’s arm. “I will need you and Dulcina as well.”

Dionne nodded and smiled. “We wouldn’t miss it, My Lady.”

Lady Starr bowed to the Court and left the Throne Room.

“Endora, is there anyone else you want to tell me about that may show up here?” Queen Taralen asked.

“No, except maybe my friend, Grim Ranger. He is a shadow wraith.” Endora smiled at the shock on her grandmother’s face. “I must go.”

“Be careful.” Queen Taralen said. She waited until Endora was out of the Throne Room and sat back on the throne. “Cara, this is your fault.”

“How?” Crown Princess Cara asked.

“Her sisters are half dragon and her friends are vampires, wraiths and dark faeries. No wonder she is the way she is.” Queen Taralen said.

“You mean true hearted and brave?” Crown Princess Cara said with a smile.

“Hmph!” Queen Taralen gave her a glare. She waved to the Court Secretary to bring on the next petitioner.

Scary Thoughts

Princess Endora and her maid, Dionne, sat in the sunshine of the fall afternoon and stared at the invitation on the blanket between them.

“What do you wear to these things anyway?” Dionne looked up at the Princess.

“You wear a costume. You dress as something you think is scary or funny.” Endora explained. “This says to be scary.”

“Why?” Dionne asked.

“It’s just what you do.” Endora shrugged. “Aura says it’s fun.”

“What does she dress up as?”

“Well she has ritual that night so she is in her robes, the black ones not the pretty ones.”

“Your sister should go as a dragon. She would have to do anything but transform for that. She would be all red scales and fire breathing.” Dionne said.

“She says it itches for days after she transforms.” Endora laughed.

Dulcina came up on them and plopped down on the blanket. She picked up the invitation and read it. “Cool! Do you think I can come to?”

“I don’t see why not.” Endora said. “Do you have a scary costume?”

“I’ll have to think about it.” Dulcina wrinkled her nose.

“Where have you been this time?” Dionne asked.

“I was visiting friends at a nudist colony.” Dulcina said. “Hey! I just had a weird thought. I’ll bet living in a nudist colony takes all the fun out of Halloween.”

“I know I will regret asking this, but why is that, Dulcina?” Endora asked.

“Cause they were already pretty scary looking naked.” Dulcina giggled.

Dionne giggled. “EW! Were you naked too?”

“Yep!” Dulcina laughed.

Endora squeezed her eyes to get the image of scary naked people out of her head. “Thanks Dulcina. That is exactly what I need to think about right before I have to sit at Court.”

“Endora! Where are you?” Crown Princess Cara called out from the path.

“I’m here, Mother.” Endora answered.

“Come along and change. You are going to be late and you know how your grandmother hates that.” Crown Princess Cara waved them back up to the palace.

“Sorry Mother.” Endora and her companions hurried back into the palace.

All afternoon Endora couldn’t help but get annoyed at Dionne as she giggled as petitioner after petitioner came forward. It was Dulcina’s weird thoughts that were to blame.

The Well of Gryphon

A portal of swirling magick opens and three faeries step out. It closes behind them.

Princess Endora, Dionne and Dulcina are all in their traveling cloaks. They have their wings covered and hoods up to hide their ears.

“Endora, are you sure we are at the right place?” Dionne whispered. “It doesn’t look like anyone lives here.”

“I’m sure this is exactly where we are supposed to be.” Endora said.

“Sure it is.” Dulcina said as she looked around. “We are supposed to be at a ruin in the middle of the night.”

“She didn’t say ‘when’ she said ‘where’.” Dionne said. “I’m sure it is quite lovely in the day time.”

“Will you two pipe down?” Endora pulled out a piece of paper from the pocket of her cloak. “The note says that there is a well inside the ruins and that is where we have to get the water from.” Endora drew her sword and headed for a crumbling archway.

“I am not going in there!” Dionne said.

“Oh come on.” Dulcina grabbed Dionne’s arm and followed Endora.

The three faeries came into a courtyard and saw the well in the moonlight. The rope was broken and an old bucket sat upside down on the stones.

Endora went to the well and looked in. “There is water in there.” She sheathed her sword.

“The rope is broken how are you going to lower the bucket?” Dionne asked.

“Oh that is the easy part.” Endora picked up the bucket and said an enchantment. The bucket went down the well and came back up with water in it. Endora sat the bucket on the ground and pulled a small bottle out of her travel bag. She filled it and tightened the stopper with magick before she put it back in her bag.

“Can we get out of here now?” Dionne said as she looked around.

“You aren’t frightened are you, Dionne?” Endora asked.

“Yes. Aren’t you?” Dionne admitted.

Endora laughed and it echoed in the ruins. “I think this is fun.”

“You are mental.” Dionne threw up her hands.

“Is that a bat?” Dulcina looked at the growing shape against the moon. She liked bats.

“No. That’s the gryphon that protects the well. We got to go now!” Endora pulled her faerie crystal out and created a portal. “Hurry before it gets here!”

The three faeries scramble through and come out in the field behind the Palace.

“Endora, from now on you need to tell old dragon breath to get her own magick water.” Dulcina said as she tried to catch her breath.

“Definitely.” Dionne said. “Did Lady Aura tell you there was a gryphon there?”

“Yes. That’s why I said I would go.” Endora started to walk to the palace in the moonlight. She turned around and looked at the two winded faeries. “Are you two going to stand there all night or are you coming?”

The two faeries looked at each other then at the princess.

“Mental.” Dionne said under her breath.

“Yep she really is.” Dulcina agreed.

They ran to catch up with Endora as she was entering the Palace..

A/N: From “The Faerie Fantasy of the Questing Princess” (Original Universe of Fiction)

Prompt: AWDT Halloween quickies: 10/22/12 Do you really think you're scary?

Word Count: 227

Costume Party

The invitation was very clear. Wear your scariest costume. It was supposed to be at Brimstone Tavern after all.

Princess Endora looked at the costume on the bed. She shrugged and tried on the ghastly thing. It was a bit awkward but she got it on. She stood looking in the mirror

Dionne and Dulcina came through the door and started laughing.

“Why are you laughing?” Princess Endora asked.

“Pardon me, Princess, but that costume is hilarious.” Dulcina said. She was dressed as a black widow spider.

“I’m a jack o lantern.” Princess Endora said with a shrug.

“Do you really think you’re scary?” Dionne asked as she tried to suppress a giggle. Dionne was dressed as a mummy. She had taken old linen sheets and made strips to bind around herself.

“Endora, you’re a pumpkin.” Dulcina said with a laugh.

Endora looked in the mirror again. “You’re right. What am I going to do?”

“You could always go as the Queen. She’s pretty scary.” Dionne said.

“That’s not funny.” Endora glared at her.

“Dragon bug here has a point. You should do it.” Dulcina said.

“She should do what?” Queen Taralen said from the doorway.

Twenty minutes later they were stepping through the doorway of Brimstone Tavern. Lady Aura looked up and laughed. There stood three faeries: a mummy, a black widow spider and a pumpkin.
