Wash And Wear
It wasn’t uncommon for Princess Endora to have patrol duty but she usually had it in the daylight hours. The palace was a bit spooky in the moonlight, full moon light that is. She had just finished the first two lower floors and she was starting on the floor with the Great Hall, Throne Room and Council Chambers. It was going to be a long night.
“Princess!” Dionne called out as she came running up.
“What is it Dionne?” Princess Endora tried to sound annoyed but she was glad to see someone she knew. She didn’t realize how lonely a night patrol in the Palace would be.
“Your mother wants to see you. She is in the East Tower.” Dionne said.
“Is she at the scrying bowl?” Princess Endora asked.
“I think that was where she was heading. She says to hurry.” Dionne said.
Princess Endora hurried up the East Tower. When she arrived Crown Princess Cara was indeed at the scrying bowl. “What is it Mother?”
“Come take a look at this.” Crown Princess Cara waved her over. “I was having a strange feeling so I came to check the bowl. I thought maybe it was one of your sisters trying to reach me.”
The image was faint and blurry. Endora waved her hand over the bowl to make the image clearer. There in the scrying bowl was a ghost floating around in the dungeon.
“I was just there and I didn’t see a thing. There isn’t anyone down there and there hasn’t been for a long while.” Princess Endora said.
“Maybe you should check again.” Crown Princess Cara said. “The scrying bowl never lies.”
“Yes, but it could be showing the past or future too.” Princess Endora put both hands out and the image rose from the bowl. “That really doesn’t look like a real ghost. It may be someone just playing at being a ghost. I’ll go check it out.”
“Should I come?” Dionne asked. She really didn’t want to go but she had to ask.
“No stay here. I’ll be right back.” Princess Endora left and hurried down to the dungeon.
When she got there she heard singing. It was in Tuathe. So unless the ghost was one of a faerie, that proved it wasn’t real.
“Hello?” Princess Endora called. She got no response but she heard one of the cell doors creak. It was a good thing she wasn’t afraid of the dungeon. She walked a little further to the back and found a bed sheet. She instantly knew it was Dulcina. “Dulcina, get out here now!”
“Aw! How did you know it was me?” Dulcina came out of the last cell on the end.
"I'm sure ghosts don't really wear 500 count, finest Egyptian cotton lilac stripe sheets." Endora said. “These are the ones that are used in the Queen’s Bedchamber. Are you out of your faerie mind?”
“I didn’t think anyone would notice and I was going to take it to the laundry when I was done.” Dulcina explained.
“With two eye holes in it?” Princess Endora poked her finger though one of the holes.
“Um…Well I guess someone might notice that but I was just playing. Are you going to tell?” Dulcina started to look worried.
“My mother already knows she was at the scrying bowl and saw you. I will have to include it in my patrol report.” Endora said seriously.
“Endora!” Dulcina looked hurt. “I thought I was your friend.”
“You are but these are the Queen’s sheets. Why didn’t you take one of the regular ones?” Princess Endora looked at her and frowned.
“I wanted to be a pretty ghost.” Dulcina shrugged.
Endora looked at Dulcina like she was out of her faerie mind. “Get to your chambers. You are gonna need to be rested when the Queen issues your punishment. You better hope she is in a good mood.”
Dulcina nodded and hurried to her chambers. She had a feeling the Queen was not going to be in a good mood. She rarely was.
Endora took the sheet to the laundry and put a note on it that it needed to be repaired. At least Dulcina didn’t put arm holes in it too. She went back to the East Tower to tell her mother what she found.
The next morning Queen Taralen read the patrol report from Princess Endora and laughed. She motioned for a guard. “Send for Dulcina. I need to speak with her.”
The guard bowed and hurried off to get her.
“Maybe a week in the laundry washing the linens will teach her to behave.” Queen Taralen said under her breath then laughed softly. “I bet she was a very pretty ghost.”
