Oct. 14th, 2020 02:00 pmThe creature howled on the other side of the door. She could smell its foul breath and the coppery tang of blood.
The killer dragged the axe as he walked up the stairs. The noise of the axe hitting each stair stole a heartbeat from his next victim.
She could hear footsteps coming closer in the hallway. She knew she would be found unless she climbed out the window onto the roof.
"Come here my darling dear." The vampire beckoned as he mesmerized his next victim.
The cauldron bubbled up as the hag stirred her brew. Dark magick was afoot on this moonless night.
Golden eyes blinked in the pitch black night. A screech from an owl flying overhead broke the silence.
Blood dripped from the beasts fangs as it howled. It's prey lay bloody and barely alive at its feet.
The door to the cottage flew open. A dark silhouette of a man appeared as lightning flashed from the storm.
She looked up at the full moon in horror. She began to turn into her worst nightmare.

Daddy's Angel
Jul. 19th, 2019 12:46 pmWC 516
He moved softly into the room. She was already asleep. He regretted working late. He missed so much when he wasn't here for bath and bedtime.
He tucked the covers around her and eased down on the bed. He just wanted to watch her sleep just for a few minutes before he went to bed. She looked like an angel as she slept.
After a few minutes, He sighed and eased himself off the bed. He would spend all day with her tomorrow. It was Saturday already by his watch.
He walked to the door and looked back. She was why he put in the long hours. College was expensive and not that far into the future. He smiled and closed the door.
He slipped into bed with his wife. He kissed her cheek and went to sleep.
The next morning, there were pancakes in pajamas and cartoons. He listened as she told him about her friends and school. He took it all in and cherished each word.
The afternoon brought chores and time outside. He worked in the yard as she played in her playhouse. She had a tea party for her dolls and stuffed monkey.
By dinnertime, they were both tired. Tonight, he would get to read a story to her and tuck her in. He fell asleep happy.
Sunday brought rain and board games. He let her win. He like the way she smiled when she did.
Another night and another bedtime story completed his weekend. The work week ahead would be unbearable. He sighed and went to bed. His wife gave him a hug and they snuggled together.
Monday dawned as he left for work. He wouldn't be back tonight for her bedtime. He wouldn't spend any time with her until the weekend. He braced himself and dove into his work. He did it for his angel. That was what he told himself.
Coming home late, he made a stop to buy her a present. Just something he did sometimes to ease his guilt. A new teddy from a big box store would make her smile.
He never got to give her the teddy. A car struck him on the way out of the store and kept going. The EMT's did what they could but in the end he died where he fell.
One of the officers picked up the bag with the stuffed bear inside. He took it with him when he went to tell the family.
His little angel cried and held on to the teddy. It was the last present she would ever have from him.
The day they buried him was cloudy. His angel stood holding her mother's hand and her new teddy. She cried as the shiny coffin was lowered into the deep dark hole.
Twenty years later, a young woman sat her office. On the wall was a diploma from an Ivy League school. On the shelf behind her desk was a photo in a frame and a teddy bear.
She did it all for her Daddy just as he had done it all for her.

Prompts: 1. This was all my fault./2. All I can do now is scream/3. I need to figure this out - now!/4. Is it ever going to get better?/5. How can this get any worse?/6. I don’t know how this will feel./7. Where am I?/8. What the heck!?/9. Oh my God!/10. I can’t let this happen.
Katie woke up with a headache and a pair of handcuffs on her wrist. She looked around and tried to make out where she was. “Where am I?”
She didn’t expect an answer. Her eyes adjusted to the light in the room. “What the heck!? How did I get in the back of a …a limousine? I was doing laundry in the basement of my building.”
Katie looked down at what she was wearing. It wasn’t the college sweatshirt and yoga pants she remembered putting on. She was wearing a formal evening gown.
“Oh my God! What is going on here? I need to figure this out - now!” She looked at the gown and her shoes. They were expensive. There was also an engagement ring on her hand … a very big engagement ring.
The door to the limousine opened. There was the smell of rain in the air. A dark haired man got inside and sat next to her. “Kathryn? What’s wrong?”
“Who are you? How do you know my name?” Katie scooted away from him.
“I am Daniel, your fiancé. Kathryn, I’m afraid you have been ill. You have been experiencing blackouts and memory loss.” He reached out to her but pulled back at the last moment.
Katie gave him a doubtful look. She held up her hands. “Why am I in handcuffs? Am I a prisoner?”
“We were playing a silly game but we should stop now. It’s upsetting you. Daniel reached in his pocket and took out a key. “Give me your hands and I will take them off.”
“Is it ever going to get better? This illness that I have? Katie held still as Daniel took off the handcuffs. She rubbed her wrists and looked at him. She still didn’t trust him. “Thank you.”
“This thing that happened to you. This memory problem you have now. This was all my fault. I was driving the night we crashed and you became this way.” Daniel looked down at the key in his hand before he put it in his pocket. “We need to find a way to make you whole again. We need to see the specialist in the morning.”
“I don’t know what you are talking about. I don’t remember an accident. I don’t remember you. I can’t let this happen. I want to go back to my apartment. Take me home. Now!” Katie reached for the door handle. “If you don’t then I will go on my own.”
“I don’t know how to tell you this.” Daniel took out a needle. “But this is going to sting.”
“No! I don’t want that. I just want to go home.” Katie struggled against his grasp. She was almost out of the limousine when she saw the rain and felt a pinch on her shoulder. “NO!”
As the world went black around her, all she could think of was how surreal this whole situation was.
“How can this get any worse?” Katie thought to herself. “All I can do now is scream.”
But she couldn’t.
The next time Katie woke up she was in a bed. She was handcuffed to the headboard. She pulled on the handcuffs to see if they were locked. “No! Not again!”
She looked around. The room was decorated in rich tapestries and antiques. She sat up and tried to get a look out of the window but the blinds were closed.
Katie was just about to start screaming when the door opened and Daniel walked in.
“Hello darling. Did you sleep well?”
“You drugged me! How do you think I slept?” Katie pulled on the handcuffs. “Why is it that I always wake up in strange places with handcuffs on?”
Daniel laughed. “It was a precaution. You have a tendency to walk in your sleep.”
“You know, I’m not buying any of your crap. Take me home or I will start screaming.” Katie mustered up all her courage to face this man he was still a stranger to her.
“Kathryn, please calm down or I will have to give you another dose of sedative.” Daniel raised an eyebrow at her. “I don’t understand why you are so confrontational suddenly. Maybe it’s a side effect of the accident.”
“There was no accident. You are just telling me that so that you can keep me here.” Katie pulled on the handcuffs again. “I’m your captive! Nothing more!”
Daniel sighed. “I’ll get you some breakfast. Maybe if you eat something you will feel better.”
“Are you going to un-cuff me?” Katie asked.
“I don’t think that would be a good idea.” Daniel turned and started to walk out. He turned back and faced her at the door. “I wish you would see that I’m doing this for your own good.”
Daniel came back twenty minutes later with a tray of fresh fruit and toast. Katie sat up as he walked in.
“I thought that I should bring you food that I can’t possibly drug.” He sat the plate on the bed next to her. “Eat something.”
“No fork?” Katie rolled her eyes. “This is getting ridiculous. Just let me go and I won’t tell the cops what you did.”
“Kathryn, I have explained this to you. You have a head injury from an accident. That is why you don’t remember me. I love you, darling. When you speak like this, it breaks my heart.”
“I bet you say that to all the girls you kidnap.” Katie took a bite of toast. She made a face as she chewed. She put the toast back on the plate. “Butter would have been nice.”
Daniel went to the door. “I will be back in a few hours. I have some errands to run.”
“You seem like a rich guy. Don’t you have people to do your errands?”
“I will be back soon, darling.” Daniel went through the door and the lock clicked behind him.
“Wonderful!” Katie looked at the bed frame. There were no marks from handcuffs being on it before. She checked both sides to be sure. “He’s lying. I have to get out of here.”
Katie tried to move the piece of wood that the handcuffs were around. She managed to move it a little. She kept working it until she got it loose. It finally gave way after almost twenty minutes of working at it.
Katie got up and went to the window she looked out. They were in the middle of the city. She recognized where she was from taking the train to work every day.
As she looked out the window she realized she was in a second story bedroom. It would be easy to drop down to the ground from where she was.
Katie looked around and saw a set of marble bookends on the desk. She tapped the window to make sure it was glass before she picked up one of the heavy bookends to break the glass.
The glass showered down on the street below. Katie grabbed the blanket from the bed and put it over the window ledge. She climbed out and dropped to the ground.
Katie realized that she had to get to somewhere safe and fast. She remembered that there was a hospital near where she was. She quickly made her way there.
When she got to the emergency room she went up to the first nurse she saw. “Help me! Please! I’ve been held captive.”
The nurse looked her over and saw the handcuffs still on her wrist. The nurse took her into a back room. “Come in here and we can call the police.”
“Thank you.” Katie looked around the break room. “What is the date?”
“It’s Thursday the tenth of November.” The nurse looked at her closely. Do you know when you were taken?”
“It was Monday the seventh. I can’t believe this. I hope the lying bastard gets what’s coming to him.”
The nurse called the police and an officer came to take her statement. Katie had to submit to a full exam including a rape kit.
Officers went back to the house where Katie was last kept and picked up Daniel. They discovered that he had done this before and his name wasn’t even Daniel.
The police went to the laundry room of her building and found signs of a struggle. They also found Katie’s clothes were still in the dryer.
With her captor in custody, Katie went back home. She didn’t stay in that apartment long. She had another one in just a few days.
On the day of the trial, Katie walked in the light rain to the courthouse. She looked at the face of the man that had held her captive and tried to convince her that he was the man she loved.
“State your name for the record please.” The prosecuting attorney said as she sat in the witness stand.
“I’m Kathryn Ann Storm.”
Six Missing in Russel

Prompt: Hurt Me/Heal Me #5. Abduction
Alice Walker checked into the motel in Russel to go to the editor’s convention. She went to bed after the first day of the conference with a head full of good ideas and a glass of wine. She went to sleep looking forward to the next day’s presentations.
Alice woke up with a sick headache. She tried to sit up and realized that she was not in her motel room. She groaned when she discovered that she had her hands and feet bound.
“Well isn't this lovely?” Alice looked around. She was more angry than frightened at that moment. “At least, I don't have a blindfold or a gag.”
The place where she was being held was dim but not dark. She could see that she wasn't the only one in there. That fact alone was more than a little disturbing. She hoped she was not in someplace full of corpses. She started to get just a little afraid.
Alice tried to sit up again. She found the pain in her head had subsided some but she still had to fight the nausea that she was feeling. She succeeded in sitting up on her third try. She took several deep breaths to gain control of herself.
“Hey! Is anyone awake in here?” Alice asked in a whisper. She thought she could see someone in the shadows moving but she wasn’t sure.
“I am.” A voice near her responded.
“Me too.” Another voice on the other side of the room piped up.
“So there are three of us?” Alice asked.
“No. There are two others near me.” The first voice said.
“I have one by me.” The second voice said. “But she hasn't moved since I got here.”
“Neither has the one my left.” The first voice said. “I'm Netta.”
“I'm Alice.”
“I'm Deb. We need to get out of here. Does anyone have any ideas of how we are going to do that?”
“If we move to the middle, we can untie each other.” Alice suggested. “Then we can get everyone out.”
“Unless, he comes back before we get out of here.” Netta said. “He hasn’t been in yet this morning. The last time I saw him was when he was bringing you in last night.”
“Then we have to hurry.” Alice started to scoot to the center of the room.
Netta and Deb scooted forward. They each worked on another to get free. They got up to check the others and free them as well.
“Oh god! She's dead.” Deb stood up suddenly.
“This one is dead too but the other one isn’t.” Netta said. “We need to carry her out. Her pulse is really weak.”
Alice felt around for a door or steps. She found a door. “I found the door but it’s locked. Does anyone see something I can break the lock with?”
Netta handed her a hammer. “I found it under the shelf. I hid it under me to protect myself if he came back this morning.”
Alice swung the hammer and broke the lock. She used the claw side to pry the door open. It gave with a groan then a pop. “I got it. Grab her and let’s get out of here. Where ever here is.”
Netta and Deb picked up the unconscious woman and followed Alice out of the building. They had gotten out of the shed only to find themselves in the middle of nowhere.
“Now what?” Netta asked as she and Deb were holding up the other girl. “We can’t walk with her like this and I don’t think we should leave her here.”
“There's a truck. Get in the back and I'll hotwire it.” Alice said.
Netta gave her a questioning look. “How are you going to do that?”
Alice shrugged. “I had a misspent youth.”
“Just hurry. She's gonna die if we don't get out of here.” Netta looked around nervously.
Netta and Deb climbed into the back of the truck just as Alice got the engine to turn over. They peeled out of the driveway.
A man came out of the house and started to chase the truck.
Alice floored it and they headed for a main road.
The next town they came to the pulled into the sheriff’s department. Alice got out of the truck and started yelling.
“Help us! We just escaped from being kidnapped.” Alice yelled. “We have someone that’s hurt. We need help.”
The several officers came out and called the EMT’s over from the fire department next door to take care of the unconscious woman.
The Sheriff came out and looked at the truck. “I know this truck. What are you women doing with it?”
“We were being held captive in a shed. We took the truck to escape. There are two women still in the shed. They didn’t make it.” Alice explained. “He took me last night from my hotel room in Russel.”
“He took me three days ago from the hotel at Russel too. Four women were already there when I woke up.” Netta pointed at Deb. “I think she was the last one taken before me.”
“Hamilton! French! Go out to Bob Jacks place and look for the two dead bodies and bring him in.” The sheriff called out to two of his men. He turned back to Alice, Netta, and Deb. “I want you three to get checked out. I don’t want anything missed. We’re going to need all the evidence we can get. He’s the county commissioner’s brother.”
“That’s just wonderful.” Netta looked around. “He’s going to get away with this, isn’t he?”
“Not if we get the evidence we need.” The sheriff patted her shoulder. He waved over another deputy. “Martin, take them to the hospital to get checked out.”
“This way, ladies.” Martin waved the three women towards a large SUV. “We’ll get you all checked out.”
The women followed him. They went to the hospital emergency room. Alice had been given a clean bill of health despite being dehydrated. Netta and Deb were in worse shape but they were going to recover. The unconscious woman was taken to a room as soon as she was brought to the hospital.
Alice called her husband as soon as they put her in a private room. “Dan, I don’t want you to get upset but I was kidnapped. I got away and I’m fine. The sheriff went after the man.”
“Where are you?” Dan asked over the line. He sounded upset even though she had told him that she was safe. “I’m coming to get you. Where the hell are you?”
“I was hoping you would say that. I’m in the hospital at Fulbright now but I was taken from the motel in Russel. I want out of here but I don’t have my stuff.” Alice told him. You’ll have to bring me something to wear.
“I’m leaving now. I’ll be there as soon as I can.” Dan took a breath. “Are they keeping you overnight?”
“Yes, I’m dehydrated. They’re giving me fluids.” Alice plucked at her arm. “Come directly here. I’m sure they will release me in the morning. The deputy said as soon as they release me they’ll need to take my statement.”
“I hope they put the bastard under the jail.” Dan growled. There was the sound of doors slamming in the background of the call.
“I don’t know. He’s the county commissioner’s brother.” Alice sighed. “He may get away with it. The sheriff thinks they can get him if they get enough evidence.”
“Did he rape you?” Dan asked suddenly,
“No, but I wasn’t there that long. He may have raped one of the other women.” Alice sighed. “They didn’t say anything about being raped when we were trying to get out of there.”
“Other women?” Dan was shocked. “How many women did he have? Didn’t someone notice people missing?”
“I don’t know. There were five other women when I woke up. Two were already dead.” Alice started to cry. What she was telling him was finally sinking in. “Dan, I’m fine.”
“I want to talk to that sheriff when I get there. I’m in the car right now. Get some rest. I’ll be there soon.” Dan said.
The call disconnected. Alice put the receiver down on the cradle and settled down to rest. She wiped the tears off her face and hugged one of the pillows against her stomach. She drifted off to sleep and by the time she woke up, Dan was sitting by her bedside.
She jumped when she woke up. She was dreaming of the shed and a face looming over her. There was a noise beside her and she almost screamed.
“Hey Alice. I’m here now.” Dan reached out and took her hand. “I’m not going to leave you by yourself. Go back to sleep and I will be over there in the chair.”
“Okay but I need you to go get my things at the hotel.” Alice told him. “Go get my stuff and come back here.”
“Are you sure you are going to be okay by yourself?” Dan looked around. “You were dreaming right before you woke up.”
“Yeah. I can’t leave here in a hospital gown.” Alice looked down at what she was wearing. “I just want to wear my own clothes.”
“Okay if you insist. I’ll be right back.” Dan kissed her on the cheek and held her tight for a moment before he left.
Alice let out a shaky breath. She needed a moment and she didn’t want Dan to know she was still rattled. It would only make him worry more.
Alice lay back down and tried to get some rest until her husband came back. She was failing miserably. She had too many images in her mind to get any peace.
Dan arrived at the hotel and the sheriff was there. He walked up to the man. “Hello I’m Dan Walker. I’m Alice Walker’s husband. I was wondering what you were doing to bring the bastard who took my Alice to justice.”
“We went to his place to pick him up but he was already gone. We have the bodies of two women on his property and proof that there were four others were being held there.” The sheriff walked with him to Alice’s room. “We have roads blocked off and we have been searching the woods near his property. His brother has a hunting camp and we are on our way out there now. We’ll find him and your wife will have justice.”
“I’m holding you to that. She was more traumatized than she will admit to. I should probably tell you that I am a lawyer. I would hate to file a lawsuit against this sheriff’s department and the county.” Dan threatened.
“I’m sure you won’t have to do that.” The sheriff assured him. This kind of thing is rare here. “This county is usually pretty quiet.”
“I hope so.” Dan said. “Is it possible for me to get my wife’s things? They will be releasing her in the morning. She sent me here to get them.”
“I think we can let you do that.” The sheriff turned to one of the deputies. “Bennet, let him have his wife’s things. We have everything that we need here, don’t we?”
“Yes sir, we do.” Bennet confirmed. He held up a paper bag and nodded. “I’ve gathered all the evidence there’s here.”
“Go ahead, Mr. Walker. We will be over at the hospital to take your wife’s statement in the morning. We wanted to let her get treatment before we started asking questions.” The sheriff held out his hand to Dan.
“Thank you for that.” Dan shook hands with the sheriff before going inside the motel room.
Dan went into the motel room and looked around. He collected Alice’s things and headed back to the hospital. Alice was asleep when he got there. He put her bag down and sat in the chair to spend the night.
The doctor came in the next morning and released Alice. The nurse brought her papers to sign and left to let Alice get dressed.
“I want to go check on Netta and Deb.” Alice said to Dan as she signed the papers for her release.
“I think that would be a good idea.” Dan said. “I want to meet these women. I want to thank them for being there when you needed someone to help you out of there.”
“We all helped each other.” Alice got up and got dressed. She ignored the wheelchair sitting near the door and headed down the hallway on foot.
Alice asked the nurse on duty where Netta and Deb were. The nurse gave her the room numbers. Alice thanked her and headed off to the first room she came to.
Alice knocked on the door frame and peeked in. “Netta, are you awake? It’s Alice.”
“Come in.” Netta smiled. “They aren’t going to let me go until they do some more tests. It’s not like they haven’t done all of them twice already.”
“I’m lucky to get out of her so soon. This is my husband, Dan.” Alice pointed to him. “Is there someone we can call for you?”
“No. my mom is on her way. I called her last night when we got here. ” Netta reached out for Alice’s hand.
Alice took her hand and held on to it. “I’m glad you have someone coming to help you through this.”
“We would still be there if you hadn’t got us moving. Thank you, Alice. We owe you our lives.” Netta squeezed her hand. “Alice, the nurse told me the name of the woman we took out of there with us. Her name is Lily Harper. She is in serious condition. They had to do surgery on her. She wasn’t just drugged when we got her out of there. She was bleeding internally.”
“I hope she is alright. She didn’t look good at all when we got her out of there. Have you seen Deb yet?” Alice asked. “I was going there next.”
“No. They haven’t let me out of this room since we got here.” Netta laughed. “Deb was having a rough night according to the nurse. They had to give her some medicine to calm her down.”
“I wonder if I should stop in and check on her.” Alice looked at Dan.
“If she is awake, she would want to see you. I was glad to see you. If it wasn’t for you none of us would have made it out of there.” Netta started to tear up. “I’m sorry. I don’t mean to cry.”
“Like I said, I was mad. I hadn’t been there long enough to be afraid.” Alice said. “I didn’t do anything other than get angry and determined. I can’t imagine what you and Deb went through.”
“It was still more than we had managed to do.” Netta squeezed her hand again and wiped at her tears. “Tell Deb I’m thinking of her. She and I talked a little when we were in that place. I’d go but they won’t let me up yet. They want me to take it easy.”
The sheriff knocked on the door. “I’m glad to see they two of you together that saves me a trip. Hello Mr. Walker. We found Mr. Jacks at the hunting camp. He barricaded himself in and there was a shootout with my deputies. He was killed before we could take him into custody.”
“I want to see his body.” Netta said. “I want to make sure he’s dead. It’s the only way for me to get this behind me.”
“I want to see him too. I have a vague memory of a face but that’s all.” Alice requested. “Do you think Deb will want to see him too?”
“Probably.” Netta agreed. “They can take us to the morgue. We can get a look at him there. The morgue is in the building, right?”
“Yes. It’s in the basement.” The sheriff said. “I will ask the doctors if you three can make the identification for the purpose of closing the case. I will let him tell me if he thinks it’s a good idea or not. His brother will be here later to claim the body.”
“Did you find out who the other women were?” Alice asked.
“Yes. We have. All of you were taken from the motel in Russel. Mr. Jacks had a job there in maintenance. The first woman was taken right after Mr. Jacks got out of prison.” The sheriff told them.
“What was in prison for?” Dan had a sinking feeling as he asked the question.
“He was in for sexual assault of a neighbor.” The sheriff looked uncomfortable. “He served his time and he was staying out of trouble. His brother said he didn’t know that he was doing. I’m inclined to believe him because he lives in town and Mr. Jacks was living on the family farm.”
“Wasn’t anyone monitoring him?” Dan asked. “If he just got out of prison he would have to have had some kind of monitoring to make sure he wasn’t a threat to the community. He had to have been on a sexual offenders list at the very least.”
“He was monitored but apparently it wasn’t enough to keep him from doing what he did.” The sheriff took his hat off and rubbed his forehead. He looked tired. “Mr. Jacks never missed his appointments with the parole officer or the court appointed psychiatrist. His brother even had dinner with him once a week to make sure he was right in the head.”
“At the farm?” Dan asked. “Where they were being held?”
“No. They had dinner at the brother’s place here in town.” The sheriff shook his head. “This was a tragedy that could have been avoided and I’m sorry.”
“Have you gone to see the other two that made it out of there alive yet?” Alice asked.
“No. I was told that Ms. Harper wouldn’t be available to give a statement until later today.” The sheriff said. “That was the woman that was unconscious. The other woman, Ms. Sills, is my next stop.”
“I was headed that direction myself.” Alice said. “I wanted to check in on her.”
The sheriff nodded. “I’ll go ahead and fill her in, if you don’t mind waiting a few more minutes.”
Alice hesitated. She didn’t want Deb to hear what the sheriff said by herself.
“Don’t go yet.” Netta said. “I just don’t want to be alone yet. Mom won’t be here for a little while yet.”
Alice nodded. The sheriff bowed his head and left them to visit.
“What brought you to this place?” Dan asked Netta.
“I was here on a job interview. I don’t even know if I got the job.” Netta shrugged. “I’m a community planner. I came here to apply for a job opening advertised in Russel.”
“You could call and speak to the interviewer.” Alice suggested. “They may have made a decision by now.”
“I think, I will when I get out of here.” Netta said. “For right now, I think I should just follow the doctor’s orders and get some rest.”
An orderly came in with a wheelchair. “The sheriff told me to come get you, Ms. Kelly. He wanted you and Ms. Walker to meet him at the morgue. Ms. Sills wanted to go view the remains right away.”
“Do you need some help?” Alice asked Netta.
“I think I can manage.” Netta carefully got out of bed. “The orderly helped her into the wheelchair.”
They headed down to the morgue. Deb met them there in a wheelchair.
“Hey. Are you doing okay? Alice asked Deb. “I was coming to see you right after Netta.”
“The sheriff told me that you were coming but I wanted this over. He went in to get things ready for us.” Deb reached out for Netta. “How are you both feeling?”
“I’m still tired but Alice seems to be fine.” Netta took Deb’s hand and looked over at Alice.
“I wasn’t there as long as you and Netta.” Alice said. “You and Deb have been through a lot more than me.”
The sheriff came out of a door. “Ladies, they are ready for you now. All you have to do is take a look and tell me if the man on the table is the man that took you. Okay?”
The three women nodded.
Dan went to stand behind Alice. “Do you want me to go with you?”
“No. Dan, I can do this.” Alice said. “I don’t really have a clear memory of his face but I still want to see if this man is even close. I want to be there for Netta and Deb too.”
The orderlies wheeled Deb and Netta into the small room and Alice followed them. The sheriff looked at Dan and closed the door.
There was a man lying on a metal table in the room. There were two sheriff’s deputies standing in the room.
Netta leaned on the orderly standing beside her as she stood up. “That’s not him. He didn’t have a beard. This man has a beard.”
Alice looked at him and shrugged. “He doesn’t look familiar but I didn’t get a good look at him.”
Netta sat back down. “That isn’t the man. Oh god! That’s not the man.”
The other orderly helped Deb stand up. Deb looked at the man and shook her head. “That isn’t him.”
“This is Robert Jacks. This is the man that lived at the farm where you were being held.” The sheriff looked at the three women. “So all of you are telling me that this is not the man that kidnapped you and held you against your will in a shed on the Jacks family farm?”
“I think that’s what we are telling you.” Alice said. She looked around and saw Deb and Netta nodding.
The sheriff took off his hat and rubbed his forehead. “We have a big problem then.”
“Sheriff, they should get back to their beds. They are still weak.” The orderly who brought Deb in reminded him. “The doctor will not like it if they are over tired.”
The sheriff nodded. “Take them back to their rooms.”
Deb was the first one out of the door. She screamed.
Alice looked over Deb’s shoulder to where she was looking. “Sheriff, I think we found the man that took us.”
The sheriff looked out into the outer room and saw Martin Jacks the brother of the dead man on the table and the county commissioner. This was not the identification that he was expecting.
“Ms. Kelly, can you tell me if that is the man that held you prisoner?” The sheriff asked.
Netta looked at Martin Jacks with wide fearful eyes. “That’s him.”
The sheriff walked into the other room and handcuffed Martin Jacks. “I would have never expected it to be you. Bob was a more likely suspect.”
“Is this the man that took my wife?” Dan asked.
When the sheriff didn’t answer, he looked at the faces of the three women. He could see the fear in their eyes.
Dan walked over to the man in handcuffs and punched him hard in the jaw. Martin Jacks hit the floor unconscious.
The sheriff looked from the man on the floor to Dan. “I understand why you did that so I’m not going to charge you with assault. You need to take care of your wife not and leave him to me.”
Dan shook his hand and nodded. “I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to let my temper get out of hand.”
“You might want to get an x-ray of that hand. I think you may have broken it.” The sheriff gave Dan’s shoulder a squeeze. “I would have done the same thing if he had taken my wife.”
“Dan, that was stupid.” Alice said. “We better get that looked at.”
“Take Commissioner Jacks and put him in a cell.” The sheriff waved his deputies into the room. He turned to the three women. “I’ll need to get statements from you even though you identified him. I hate to do that to you but it has to be done.”
“We understand.” Netta told him. “You are only doing your job.”
“Ms. Walker, you can come down to the station to make your statement. I will send deputies to take statements from Ms. Sills and Ms. Kelly.” The sheriff looked at the orderlies. “You should be getting them back to their rooms. I am going to make sure the commissioner has been properly processed.”
“Thank you for everything you have done so far.” Deb told the sheriff. “I am getting tired.”
“Then we better go.” The orderly smiled. He looked at the other orderly who nodded and followed him down to the elevator.
“Let’s go get your bag and get out of this place.” Dan said.
“Not until you get that hand checked out.” Alice held his arm and looked at the bruise forming on his hand. “Humor me please.”
After Dan and Alice went to get her bag from her room, Dan got his x-ray. Dan had a boxers fracture but he didn’t care. All he cared about was that Alice was alright.
They left the hospital and headed to the sheriff’s department. Alice gave the deputy there her statement. Dan took her to a hotel in Fulbright for the night. They left in the morning.
Deb and Netta went home after they were released from the hospital. They kept in touch with Alice as they all waited for the trial.
The day before the trial they all went back to Fulbright to be witnesses for the prosecution.
Deb and Netta went in before Alice on the witness stand they told the judge and jury what they had been through. Their stories were similar.
They told the jury that they had been tied up and raped. They had been in that shed for days without water or food. They watched the next woman come in and be put through the same thing they had been put through themselves.
When Alice got on the witness stand, she looked at Martin Jacks.
“I never asked to be taken. I was minding my own business in my motel room. I had just spent the day at a conference. I went to sleep and had the weirdest dream that some man was standing over me. I woke up in a shed. In a shed!”
Alice took a sip of water and took a breath before she continued.
“My hands and feet were tied and I had been drugged. I was surprised that I wasn’t alone. I woke up to find five others in that shed with me. They had been there for days. There were two women dead in there with us.”
“I wasn’t going to stay there. I had to get out. We all did.” Alice looked at the judge. “We took an opportunity and got out of there. It took all of us to work together to get free but we did it.”
“Then the sheriff assumed that his brother had done this to us. He hunted down the wrong man and now he’s dead.” Alice turned to face Martin Jacks. “That makes you responsible for three deaths not just the two women in the shed but your own brother. I hope that haunts you.”
Alice went into the corridor to sit with Deb and Netta. Lily introduced herself and sat with them waiting for the verdict.
The verdict was quick and Martin Jacks was given the maximum sentence. It was what they needed to hear but it wasn’t going to help them heal. They were the only ones that could do that for themselves.
#2. Large and in charge!
Feb. 16th, 2015 05:05 pmWord Count: 469
Hazel was the office manager. She was a rotund woman and somehow she made that work for her. She was the law on the main floor of the office. She made the schedules. She ordered the supplies. She even made the coffee.
There wasn’t one thing that happened in that office she didn’t know about. She knew everything about everyone or so she thought.
It was a Tuesday like any other Tuesday. There was copying and filing to do and emails and invoices to send out. Everyone was acting normally. Nothing unusual was going on.
Hazel was watching all of this go on from her desk at the back of the office just to make sure. She did this every day and made no effort to hide that she was doing it.
But today was a different Tuesday. It was her birthday and there wasn’t time in the busy workday for shenanigans such as birthday celebrations. So Hazel sat and watched them work and wondered what she would do later when she left work.
Then the unusual Tuesday thing happened. The boss called an emergency staff meeting in the downstairs conference room. Everyone was required to come. No exceptions!
Staff meetings were not uncommon but they would rarely happen on the spur of the moment or on Tuesday. They were hardly ever held in the downstairs conference room. That was the one that the boss used for clients.
Hazel went down in the elevator when the floor was clear and walked into a surprise birthday party for her.
She looked each one of the people she worked with in the face before turning to the boss. With her hands on her hips, she looked at him and asked exactly what he thought he was doing throwing a party for her during business hours.
Instead of being intimidated like everyone else, the boss just walked over and hugged Hazel. He explained that he knew it was her birthday and he wanted to make it special for her because of all the wonderful things she did for his business.
Hazel didn’t know what to do. She hugged the boss back and started to cry.
He handed her a small package and she smiled as she opened it. It was a coffee mug that said “I’m in charge here.”
In the coffee mug was a velvet box with a gold heart shaped necklace. The boss explained that he gave that to her because she was the heart of the operation.
Cake and more presents were passed out and then it was time to get back to work. Hazel put coffee in her mug and put on her necklace and got them all settled down and working again.
It was certainly a good day to be one who was large and in charge.
Writing Challenge #6: Sensory Perception
Feb. 6th, 2015 12:05 amCharacters: Amelia Hughes (Anna Black)
Rating: PG
Word Count: 614
The voyage had taken three long stormy months. It was the most unpleasant trip there ever could have been. The ship had finally docked and was being unloaded. Anna, as she was now calling herself, walked down the gang plank to the dock.
There was a hustle and bustle everywhere around her. People were moving back and forth from dock to ship. Crates and barrels along with luggage littered the dock. The rough sailors smiled as they went about their work. In all there was a mix of colors, sights, and faces that were almost overwhelming.
Standing on the dock she could smell the rotting fish mingled with the salty putrid water from the bilges of the ships. In the distance there were smells of cooking and wood fires. It certainly smelled like a sea port.
It sounded like a sea port as well. The sailors were swearing and laughing. Some were making catcalls at the women as they walked by. The noise of the ships creaking and the water slapping onto their sides mingled with it all.
Anna had to find lodgings and then she had to find a way to support herself and the baby. She also needed to get something to eat.
Anna had money with her but it would last very long. She had taken all there had been in the house and she had even cleared the coffers at the butcher store before she left.
No doubt her husband was upset when he saw all the money he had was gone. It would have increased his anger when he found that she was gone.
That no longer mattered to her. Anna was an entire ocean away from him and his bullying. She would never feel the pain of his beatings again. But most importantly, her child would never know them at all. It was the reason she left her life and her name behind. She put her hand on her belly and felt the baby kicking that was when she knew she had done the right thing. They would stay safe here.
Anna hailed a porter and asked about her luggage. He pointed to it on the other side of the walkway. He helped her get her things into a wagon and take them to the public house in the middle of town. She gave him a tip and a smile.
When Anna arrived at pub she could smell the stew and stale ale throughout the room. For the first time she would have a hot meal and a bed that wasn’t constantly moving.
Anna arranged for her room and went upstairs to where they took her luggage. She had also arranged for a meal to be brought up to her.
The room was small and scrubbed clean but that was to be expected. There was a table with a lone chair on one side and a bed and washbasin on the other.
The innkeeper’s wife eyed Anna’s belly and gave her a suspicious look. It was almost as if she didn’t believe the story that she was a widow looking for a fresh start.
When the food was brought up, Anna relished every bite of the beef and roasted vegetables. The beef was cooked so that it melted in her mouth. The crisp edges on the vegetables added a smoky flavored crispness to each bite. The fine white bread was warm and soft and the sweet butter melted just right. Everything was perfect and delicious. She ate until she couldn’t eat another bite.
Anna laid down on the narrow bed exhausted and sated. She would look for work in the morning but tonight she would sleep in peace.

Summary: Its Bob’s fiftieth birthday party.
Word Count: 496
Prompt: #2. The dark night and the cold rain put a gloom on everyone's. mood.
The dark night and the cold rain put a gloom on everyone's. mood. What was supposed to be a celebration was turned into a nightmare. That's what happens when you think a tent isn't necessary in early May.
She had checked the weather forecast twice before setting up for the party. It was supposed to be clear and warm instead of cold and raining.
Tessa passed out towels to the guests standing inside the covered porch. She apologized as she went around.
Some guests were already heading for the door. They had enough of this party.
“Everyone! May I have your attention? We still have plenty of food and drinks and there is birthday cake.” Tessa told them all.
Bob, Tessa's husband, came up behind her. “Thanks Hon. It was fun until the rain started.”
“I'm sorry I should have gotten a tent.” Tessa said. “Happy fiftieth.”
“It’s okay. I told you not to make a fuss. I guess the universe was on my side.” Bob chuckled.
“That's not funny. I'll get the waiters to pass out more champagne. “Tessa said.
Bob grabbed her hand. “Let them go. I only wanted to celebrate with you anyway.”
“Now you tell me.” Tessa smiled as he pulled her into his arms.
“I told you before but you didn't listen.” Bob said. “You were too excited with planning this disaster.”
Bob looked around to see most of the guests had already left and the rest were at the door waiting for their cars.
“Looks like I'm going to be getting my wish.” Bob smirked.
“I hope you don't have a stroke when you see the bill for this.” Tessa said.
“Can't be as bad my fortieth birthday with the band on the beach? How many permits did you need for that one?” Bob asked even though he knew.
“I had six but I needed seven according to the police that busted it up.” Tessa laughed. “Yeah. We had to bail a lot of people out that night.”
“No more parties! Promise me.” Bob looked her in the eye. “Tessa, promise me.”
“I promise no more parties.” Tessa sighed. “I haven't managed to throw a good one in years.”
“You've never thrown a good party.” Bob corrected her. “If it wasn't for your mother our wedding would have been a disaster.”
“I better get over to the door and make sure everyone is getting home in one piece.” Tessa said as she pulled out of Bob's arms.
“When they all leave we will have cake.” Bob said.
Two hours later, Tessa and Bob sat in the emergency room. Bob was recovering from an allergic reaction to the almond paste in the cake icing.
“Okay so this the worst birthday party ever. I thought they were using artificial flavoring in the icing.” Tessa said. “I promise no more parties.”
“Good because I don't think I will survive the next one.” Bob said.
Tessa sighed. “I don't think either of us will.”
Annie’s Escape

There was no other choice. Annie had to leave before she was the next one to be killed. She had to get out of there and fast.
Annie quietly made her way out of the manor. Once she was clear, she picked up her skirts and ran for the stables.
Annie didn't even take time to saddle the mare. She grabbed the reins of the chestnut mare and climbed up on the side of the stall to mount.
Annie rode out of the stable as fast as she could. She glanced behind her but didn't see anyone following her.
Annie rode all night. She only stopped long enough to water the horse and find some berries to eat. She reached the city just as the sun rose in the sky.
Annie found the public stable for her horse and made her way on foot to the only place she could go. She went to her mother’s house.
Annie hesitated at the door. It had been years since she had left home. It had been more years than she cared to think about.
She wasn't even sure that her mother would let her in. They fought the day she left. They fought about the man she had left with to the county manor.
She knocked. She waited.
The door opened. Her mother stood in the doorway.
“Annabelle. Why are you here?” The old woman said. She blocked the doorway. “Go away. I don't want you here. You made your choice.”
“The soldiers are in the countryside. He is dead as are all of the servants. Mother please. I have no other place to go.” Annie said.
“So you are here with nothing. Begging for me to take you in when I told you not to go with him.” Her mother said. “I don’t want you here.”
“I have money and jewels.” Annie said. “Please let me in.”
The old woman moved aside to let her in. She pulled her inside. “Come in then.”
Annie went to the hearth and held out her hands to warm them. “Thank you.”
“Where are your money and jewels?” The old woman asked. I see nothing but a gold ring.
Annie pulled up her skirts and showed her a large purse. “I have what I said. I never lie to you.”
“Hmph. You always lie. You lied about him. That's how you got into this mess.” Her mother sat at the table. “I need money for the rent and there's no food.”
“What would you have done if I hadn't shown up?” Annie said.
“I have my ways of surviving.” The woman said cryptically.
“You make money by selling yourself.” Annie spat out. “You always have. That was why I never knew my father. You didn’t even know his name.”
“Well, there we are. I always suspected that's how you felt about me.” Her mother banged her fist on the table. “I should have never let you in.”
“Then I will go. I should have never come here.” Annie walked to the door.
“Wait. You have nowhere to go.” Her mother called out.
“I have money. I will stay at the public house.” Annie put her hand on the door latch. “Goodbye Mother.”
“You can't leave me with nothing.” The old woman shouted.
Annie faced her mother. She pulled off her ring and threw it at the old woman. “Here. It’s more than you deserve. I don't know why I came here. You tried to sell me to men.”
“It’s not a real bad life. It has its good days and bad days.” The old woman laughed.
“I didn't want to be like you. That was the real reason I left. I never loved him. He was kind to me.” Annie told her.
“He made you soft.” The woman scoffed.
“He made me whole. Goodbye.” Annie went through the door.
Annie went into the cold harsh world. She made her way to the public house and then started a new life.
Annie sold the mare and worked serving tables at the public house for room and board. She managed to keep most of what she had brought with her.
After the war, Annie went back to the manor house. There wasn't much left by the time she returned. She sold what was left and the house. It gave her enough to live modestly for the rest of her life.

Mickey's Letter
Jan. 5th, 2015 01:50 pmHello My Dearest Friends,
I'm Mickey or that is the name I go by in the virtual world. Sometimes I go by this name in the real world as well. My real name is not important. I also don't wish to share my real name with you. I have my reasons.
I have learned to hide who I am with some skill. At first, I hid because of fear but not anymore. The fear I thought was out there is dead and gone. Now, I hide by habit. It has become my way of life. It is now who I am.
When I learned of the death of my fear, I also learned that the reason I feared it was all an evil lie told by selfish people for selfish reasons. Their true reasons were never explained to me. They said they made me be afraid of it for my own good.
I realized that those reasons will never be explained to me. They say I don’t deserve an explanation. I don’t need one. Those selfish people aren't talking. At least they aren't talking to me. Actually, they aren't talking to anyone about any of this..
One day, I learned that I never had anything to fear. It was all an allusion. It was done to deprive me of something I can never get back. Something they did not wish for me to have.
It was done to me out of love or so they said at the time. It was really done out of spite to hurt me and another who also didn't deserve it. They wanted to separate us and never let us get to know each other. They never wanted us to learn the truth behind the lies.
The lie had repercussions. I lost more than first thought. I lost my identity. I lost love and family. I lost possible happy memories. Most of all I lost a part of myself that I can't ever get back.
I should be angry but I have realized that anger will not give me back what I have lost. Anger will only make me lose time and energy on something that can’t be changed. I have lost too much. I won’t lose any more to this.
Sadness is all I can feel now. It is all that is left to me. It is a legacy borne of a lie and perpetuated by silence. A legacy of sadness is no real legacy at all but it is all that I have.
So friends understand my secrecy and respect it. Know that I don't do it out of malice but out of habit. Don't pity me or be angry for me. It does nothing but spread the legacy to you and yours. I don't want that for you. Be happy and truthful as best you can, that is all I really want for you now.
Sincerely,
The girl known as Mickey Davis

May. 26th, 2014 12:04 pmCharacters: Detective Brenda Day, Detective Mike Burns, Austin Henderson, Sergeant Ralph Walker, Officer Frank Wright

The Way It Went Down
There was a buzz in the room when Detective Brenda Day woke up. She couldn't tell if it was in her head or from somewhere around her. She raised her pounding head from the cold floor and a wave of nausea hit her. She slowly eased it back down as she tried to focus on something to keep her from falling unconscious again.
There was the sound of footsteps coming towards her. They were heavy and deliberate.
Brenda fought to sit up. She was going to face whatever was going to happen head on.
“Well, good to see you are awake, Detective Day. I was beginning to think I wouldn't get the pleasure of killing you myself.” The tall thin man said with a British accent. “You have interfered in my business for the last time.”
“Don't think it’s over just because you kill me, Henderson. There are people looking for me right now. They will kill you for what you are about to do.” Brenda said bravely. She knew it was over for her. The mob boss had the upper hand.
“They will have to find me to kill me. I don't intend on waiting around for them. Your time is up, Detective.” The thin man raised his hand. The dim light in the room reflected off the chrome plated revolver in his hand.
Brenda took a deep breath and closed her eyes as she waited for the bullet.
There was a loud bang.
Brenda opened her eyes and Detective Mike Burns was standing over Henderson's body on the floor in front of her.
“Mike?” Brenda said with a hitch in her voice.
“Hey. Sorry to be late to the party but I stopped for coffee.” Mike grinned. “You in one piece, Bren?”
“I think I have a concussion. I have all the symptoms.” Brenda said. “I think one of his men hit me in the head with something.”
“I have to call this in and get the paramedics to look at you.” Mike smiled. “Be right back.”
Mike pulled his phone out of his back pocket. He walked away a short distance and Brenda listened as he gave his badge number and their location. He walked back to her.
“You need to stay quiet. I'll go flag them down. Grab his gun in case he's still breathing.” Mike told her as he walked out the door.
Brenda grabbed the mob boss' gun and felt for a pulse. She sat back against the concrete pillar next to her to wait for Mike to come back with help.
Five minutes later she heard the sirens and breathed a sigh of relief.
Sergeant Ralph Walker burst through the door. “What happened, Day?”
“This is Austin Henderson. He was going to shoot me but Mike got him first.” Brenda said.
“Mike Burns? It couldn't have been, Brenda. We found him in the trunk of his car out front. He's been dead for hours.” Walker told her.
“No Ralph. He was right here not five minutes ago. I saw him I talked to him. He called it in. I'm telling you it was him.” Brenda started to cry.
Ralph Walker looked around. He hated it when a woman cried. “Come on. Let's get you to the ambulance. We will figure it out when your head is clearer.”
Ralph pulled her up and helped her outside. He helped her sit on the gurney for the paramedics to check her out.
“Ralph I want to see him.” Brenda said as she grabbed the sergeant’s arm..
“No you don't. Henderson slit his throat. He bled out in the trunk. It’s a mess. Stay here. I'll be right back.” The sergeant walked off to talk to another officer by the crime scene tape.
“What do you have for me?” Ralph asked the officer.
“Henderson took one to the back of his head. Dispatch claims it was Burns that called it in but that's not possible. The ME said he's been dead two hours or more.” Officer Frank Wright told his sergeant.
“Day said she saw him shoot Henderson. She talked to Burns and she said she heard him call it in.” The sergeant rubbed his chin. “Frank, I have no idea how this really went down. I guess we have to wait for ballistics to sort it out.”
“Got it. I'll look around for shell casings.” The officer said. “Where's her gun?”
“The only weapon I saw was a chrome plated .45 revolver. That must be Henderson's. Burns and Day have .9 mils.” Walker told him. “Have the officers search everywhere. One of them has to have been fired and that would be the weapon that took out Henderson.”
Frank nodded and stepped away from the sergeant. He called out to some other officers and they went inside.
The sergeant went back to check on Detective Day. “Well what's the verdict?”
“I need a cat scan but it looks like a concussion.” Brenda told him.
“I hate to ask this but where is your gun, Brenda?” Walker asked.
“I don't know. I had it in my hand before I was knocked out.” Brenda looked down at her hands. “Mike wasn't here. He was on the way but I went in anyway. I know I should have waited but I didn't see anyone and I just wanted to look around.”
“You should have waited.” Walker said sternly. “Where were you when they got the drop on you?”
“I was at the west entrance just a few feet inside the door. I never saw it coming. My car should be parked on the other side of the fence.” Brenda told him.
“We found it on the way in.” Walker told her. “Burns came to the south entrance. That was where we found his car. Why?”
“I told him west. He always had a lousy sense of direction.” Brenda laughed sharply then put her hands to her temples.
“Take her to the hospital.” Walker said to the paramedics. He patted Brenda on the shoulder. “I'll check on you later Brenda.”
The paramedics loaded her into the ambulance and left.
“Sergeant!” Frank called out. He held up two evidence bags with a gun in each. They were Burns and Day's service weapons.
“Where did you find them?” Walker asked.
“This one was at the west entrance and the other was in the back floorboard of Burns' car. The one in Burns' car was the one that was fired recently. One round is missing.” Frank told him.
“His gun? This is just too weird. This case is just not adding up.” Walker rubbed his chin.
“What if he did it then was killed? She could have passed out after.” Frank proposed.
“No then Henderson would have been dead longer. He was still warm when we got here.” The sergeant shook his head. “Let’s go over the place one more time to make sure there wasn’t another person here.”
“Got it Sergeant.” Frank went to start the search.
When the officers had combed through the crime scene, they couldn’t find evidence of anyone else being there. Everything was still as mysterious as it was when Detective Day gave her statement to the sergeant.
Several hours later, Brenda lay alone in her dark hospital bed staring out the window at the rain. She went over the last minutes with Henderson in her head. She thought of Mike looking so alive but it couldn't have been him. He was already dead. But who was it if it wasn’t Mike? It was too much to deal with.
Mike had been Brenda’s partner since she became a detective. Mike had lost his first partner, Charlie, in a fire fight with a street gang selling cocaine for the local drug lord.
Brenda knew Mike and Charlie were close but so was she and Mike. By some standards, they were maybe a little too close. But that was the risk the department took in setting up a male and female partner situation. Sometimes they grow a bond deeper than trust.
Brenda and Mike were what they jokingly referred to as ‘partners with benefits’. Two lonely people coming together to make themselves less lonely. That was all it was supposed to be.
After today, Brenda knew it would come out. Nothing would be the same.
A noise behind Brenda made her turn away from the window. She looked up and gasped. “Mike?”
“Yeah I know, Bren. I'm dead and all that but I just wanted to see you one last time. To tell you that I did what I did to protect you and just to make sure you know I'll be alright where I'm going.” Mike said with an impish grin. “You won't have time to miss me with that bun in the oven. He's gonna be a handful like his old man.”
“I just found out. How do you know?” Brenda asked.
“You find out a lot by dying.” Mike chuckled. “You told them what went down and now they think you're nuts.”
“Yeah. They put me on stress leave.” Brenda said. “Half pay isn't going to be easy.”
“My stuff goes to you including my house. I put it in my will when we started being more than just partners. I only had you to give it to.” Mike looked up. “I have to go. Don't tell anyone I was here. Don't want them to think you've gone off the deep end.”
Brenda nodded. She watched as Mike faded into nothing. She turned back to the window. She put her hand over her belly and cried.
Sergeant Walker had a tough time with the case file. The gun that killed Henderson was Mike’s and the only prints on it were mike’s. The medical examiner confirmed that mike had been dead two full hours before Henderson. The dispatch tape that was made after Henderson was killed had mike’s voice on it. The voice print matched a dead man.
It didn't seem possible that a dead man could fire a gun to save his partner. But no one counted on the power of love.
