Her Duty, His Desire
Chapter 1: The Groom and His Bride

As Lord Retalon Draconis flew above the city in his dragon form, he realized that he had only seen his betrothed in flight. The only thing he knew of Lady Anna Caldra was that she was the most beautiful dragon that he had ever seen. She was golden and the sunlight glittered on her scales making her seem as if she were fire itself. They had flown together with talons locked as part of the betrothal ceremony when they were young.

Since then they hadn’t had any contact with each other. Lady Anna had returned to Firestorm, the world from where she came and Retalon took up residence on the Isle of Atlantis where he eventually became a Council Member.

It was not unusual for a betrothed Draconian couple to be apart for centuries. Most betrothed Draconian did not marry until sometime after their second mark. But now Anna and Retalon were both past their second mark and it was time for them to marry.

Retalon realized they wouldn’t know each other’s faces until after they bonded two days from now. He was hoping that she would still find him worthy in his human form. He was considered somewhat handsome with his black hair and blue eyes.

He spread his wings to swoop along the outer harbor one more time before heading to the North Tower in the heart of the city.
-
On Firestorm, Lady Anna Caldra looked in the looking glass and sighed. “Why must I marry? Why can’t I take the veil?”

“You will do this.” Lord Mordon Caldra said to his oldest daughter. The imposing gray haired man folded his arms across his chest as he looked at his daughter. “The House of Draconis is the oldest and most respected of all the Houses of Draconia. It is a great honor to our family that they chose to betroth their only son to our house. You should feel humbled to be asked to be his bride.”

Anna sighed. She pushed her light gold curls off her shoulders. “What if he is a toad? Will I still have to marry him?”

“Yes daughter. Now pack your things. We will travel to Atlantis in the morning.” Lord Caldra walked to the door of his daughter’s bed chamber and turned back. “I have guards watching in the towers. There will be no flying away from here. Accept your fate, Anna. It is the fate of all women of our race.”

“Yes Father.” Anna said. Her emerald eyes narrowed as she watched him leave in the looking glass and sighed once again. It was so unfair that she had no say as to who she wanted to marry. Traditions were damn frustrating especially for a Draconian woman.
-
Lord Retalon landed on the walkway connecting the tenth floor of the North Tower with the South Tower. He was just outside his living quarters. He transformed into his human form. He shook the dust off of himself and went inside. He picked up the robe he had left there for his return and put it on. He went inside and headed for his quarters.

“Lord Retalon! I would speak with you.” A woman covered in a blue veil and gown came toward him.

Lady Vena was from the Holy Mother’s temple. She was the High Priestess of the Mother Goddess. She was also Bruni. Bruni were a race of immortal beings that were sensitive to light and sometimes had the gift of sight.

Retalon stopped and turned to bow deeply before her. “High Priestess, how may I assist you?”

“Am I to understand there will be a bonding of you and your betrothed in two days’ time?” The High Priestess asked.

“Yes My Lady. She will be here tomorrow evening. We will bond at high noon the next day.” Retalon wasn’t sure what the High Priestess of the Goddess Mother was concerned about. The ritual was not one of her duties. “If I may ask, why are you inquiring?”

“I have seen a vision as I gazed into the sacred pool.” Lady Vena said.  “I have seen a red and a gold dragon clutching the twin towers of Atlantis. I see the towers coming down and exploding. If you bond with this gold dragon, it will mean the destruction of Atlantis. It will be your death.”

“High Priestess, I am sure that you believe what you see to be true but I do not. There is no scenario that would make me destroy my home. Yes. Atlantis is my home.” Lord Retalon told her. “Excuse me My Lady. I must prepare for the Council session.”

“Mark my words Lord Retalon Draconis, for one day it will come to pass.” Lady Vena said. “All visions from the sacred pool come to pass.”

“As long as it doesn’t come to pass before we finish establishing the colonies on Ogham-Duir, I will be fine with it.” Lord Retalon bowed low to the High Priestess and left her standing in the corridor.

Retalon went to his chambers and freshened up before leaving for the Council meeting. Afterwards, he worked at his duties so that he could have everything done before his betrothed came to Atlantis.
-
At first light, a house boy came to take away Lady Anna’s trunk. She watched him from her bed and wondered what her new life would be like. She said a silent goodbye to the room that she had lived in since she was out of the nursery. She realized that she may never return to Firestorm. She certainly would never return to the life she had here at this moment.

A servant came with hot water and her breakfast. Her simple gown and cloak were already laid out and ready for her to put on.

Anna stretched and got off the bed to dress and eat before the portal system would take them far away to Atlantis and to her new life.

Anna had one stop to make before she left. She had to say goodbye to her mother. She couldn’t leave without seeing her mother’s face one more time.
-
Anna stopped by her mother’s chambers after she was ready to travel. Her mother would not be traveling with her and this was most likely the last time she would see her.

“Mother, I am about to leave for Atlantis.” Anna said to her mother as she walked into the room. “Will you wish me well in my new life?”

“Yes my daughter. I wish you all the best with your new husband. Anna, I want you to be a good wife to him.” Lady Letta Caldra said to her daughter. “Don’t defy him. Submit to him without hesitation. Remember to walk behind him not beside him. Speak only when he asks you to and always call him ‘My Husband’. Never look him in the eye. You must always look down. He is your life and you are the vessel of his seed.”

Anna sighed. She had heard all of this from the time she had been betrothed. These rules were the reasons she didn’t want to marry. She didn’t want to be a man’s vessel she wanted to be his heart.

“I will do my best to be a good wife, Mother.” Anna hugged her mother. “I love you. I will miss you.”

“I will miss you too.” Letta kissed her cheek and smoothed down the gold curls that were just like hers. “Give him many children.”

“I will, Mother.” Anna said. She started to cry. “I wish you were coming with me.”

“Your father will not allow it. Stop crying. It does no good.” Letta wiped the tears from her daughter’s face. “Go. Don’t make your father wait. He will punish you.”

Anna turned away from her mother and walked out the door.
-
It took a full day to travel from portal to portal to Atlantis, Anna was exhausted and dizzy from the time shifts that she had to endure. One world would be in night but the next may be in day. There was no way to know until they arrived. They thankfully arrived at Atlantis just as the sun was setting. They were escorted to the guest chambers on the top floor of the South Tower,

Anna sat on the window seat looking out over the isle that was now her home. She looked over the water and wondered what it would be like to fly over the seas. She wondered what it would feel like to dip her talon in the water as she glided over it. It would be very different than the desert with its heat currents coming from the surface in waves.

Lord Caldra came into his daughter’s room. “Daughter, you will have the bonding ritual at high noon. There will be a feast and then you will be alone with your husband. I will be returning to Firestorm the day after tomorrow. I will see you before I leave if your husband will allow it.”

“You are leaving me here with a complete stranger?” Anna looked up at her father from the window. “What if we don’t get on?”

“You are his wife after tomorrow. You must get on with him.” Lord Caldra said. “You must get on with him in all ways, my daughter. The survival of our race depends on it.”

“I know. You have already given me the lecture on how we are a race in danger of extinction.” Anna said. “I will do what is necessary but I don’t have to make it easy for him.”

“I never expected that you would.” Lord Caldra said. “Your first mating will be during the ritual. You will be in dragon form. Try not to bite him.”

“I promise nothing, Father.” Anna gave her father a petulant look and turned her attention back out the window.

“Anna, I do love you. Please understand that this is as hard for me as it is for you.” Lord Calder said softly.

“I doubt it.” Anna said. “You and mother chose each other. I had no choice. You will leave and I will be alone with a stranger who will have rights that I’m not sure he should.”

“He will be your husband. He should. Sleep now. Tomorrow will be a long day.” Lord Caldra walked out of the room.

Anna started to cry. This was not the marriage that she wanted but it was the one she would get. She prayed that her husband would be kind to her.
