“Have you got a brook in your little heart,
Where bashful flowers blow,
And blushing birds go down to drink,
And shadows tremble so?”
Aura moved through the dense forest to the edge of a small brook that leads into the river down below. She carried with her a basket and a book. She wanted to sit in one of her little hideaways for the afternoon undisturbed. Very few people even knew of the place and that was why she liked it.
This was the first time that she was going to be alone in a long time. Her husband, Dragas had gone on a diplomatic mission for his brother, the King of Zestra, and her sisters were occupied with their upcoming weddings.
Aura spread a blanket from the basket alongside a patch of mountain belles. One of the reasons that she liked this spot was because there always seemed to be flowers everywhere. Besides the mountain bells, there were wood violets and lady slippers enjoying the breeze.
She looked up into the dancing leaves on the trees at the early afternoon sun and wondered if there would be enough light to read by. The trees were very close together in this part of the forest.
Aura sat on the blanket and found herself staring into the brook instead of reading. The part of her that was Fae could gaze into the water to see family and friends going about their everyday life. She watched them without calling out to them for a while. It was nice to see that everyone was well and safe.
Suddenly, Aura was startled by a sound. She looked up and smiled when she saw Leeas Wyvern. He was a Draconian that often quested with her sister, Endora. He was also a well-known mercenary.
Leeas bowed deeply to her. “My Lady, what are you doing in the woods alone? Where is the Prince on this fine day? Should he not be at your side?”
“Dragas is abroad. His brother sent him to Ren on a diplomatic mission.” Aura responded.
“Ren is in great turmoil these days. He has his work cut out for him.” Leeas looked around. “Are the Chimeras not that far away from this place?”
“They are to the south.” Aura raised an eyebrow at the well-armed man. “I may look like a human but I am both Fae and dragon. I have the powers of both and I am perfectly safe on my own.
Leeas nodded in respect. “I would feel better if I could escort you home. This forest can be dangerous even for you.”
“Sit Leeas and take in the beauty of this place. It is peaceful and pure; two things that are becoming harder to find in this world. Soon it will be gone.” Aura motioned to a spot under an oak tree.
Leeas pulled one of his katanas and sat with his back to the tree. He stuck the sword in the ground in front of him. “Is that your magick speaking or your wisdom?”
“Both.” Aura sighed. “The war between the Thunderbirds of the Northern Lands and Phoenix of Ogham-Duir has touched us several times already. I expect the magick that we have shielded here to be discovered before too long.”
“The war has done great damage. My parents were forced to leave the Northern Lands because of it.” Leeas dropped his head. “They came here after the destruction of Draconia as refugees. Now they are refugees again. They have traveled to the Draconian colony of Astoria in the Kingdom of Zestra. They intend to settle there.”
“They will be safe there.” Aura tried to gage his emotions but was unsuccessful. “Will you be joining them?”
“Yes. I was on my way there when I spotted you sitting here.” Leeas looked around again. He was on high alert even when he was sitting in what looked like a relaxed position.
“Relax. Have a biscuit.” Aura chuckled as she held out a tin for him to make a selection. “The chimeras rarely venture out of their clearing.”
“Thank you, My Lady.” Leeas took a biscuit and took a bite. He smiled. “This is a draka! How do you know how to make these?”
“My Aunt Benna taught me when I was living with my father. My grandmother taught her.” Aura explained.
“I assume you are referring to your Draconian grandmother and not the Queen of the Southern Tuathe.” Leeas smiled. I doubt Her Majesty would know how to make drakas.”
“No. Queen Taralen wouldn’t have any idea how to even start to make them.” Aura smiled. “I wish I had known my other grandmother. Lady Anna, my Draconian grandmother died before I was born.”
“As much as I would like to stay a while longer, I must get going. My parents are expecting me for supper and its getting late.” Leeas stood up and bowed again. “I will ask you again, My Lady. Would you like me to escort you home?”
“No. I won’t stay here much longer.” Aura shook her head. “Say ‘hello’ to your family for me.”
“I will, My Lady.” Leeas bowed and went on his way.
Aura sat there with her drakas and a bottle of tea for a while longer before heading back to her cottage. She had wanted to be alone but she hadn’t minded sharing her special spot with a weary soul.
