Dragas, a tall dark haired man with green eyes, rushed through the front door of the small cottage. He pulled off his wet cloak and hung it up. He looked around. “Aura! Are you here?”

“Yes.” Aura, a short woman with dark grey eyes and a streak of blue in her short brunette hair, came out of the kitchen with a tray filled with tea things and placed it on the table in front of the fire. “I’m glad you’re home. I was hoping you would beat the storm.”

“Did you do it?” Dragas gave her an accusing look. He knew she had the power to conjure a storm.

Aura shook her head. “No it wasn’t me.”

“Victra?” Dragas looked confused. Aura’s sister was known for her storms and the havoc that they caused.

“No. She doesn’t have enough power for a storm this big. It’s strange.” Aura went to the front window and looked out. “The only time I have seen a storm of this magnitude was when my father took me north to the Thunderbird’s territory. He was sent on a mission by the Council of Atlantis to start treaty negotiations.”

“Thunderbirds? Aren’t they at war with the Eagles?” Dragas came up behind his wife and looked out the front window at the fierce lightning and heavy rain. “How do a bunch of birds cause this?”

“They fly in circles and patterns to stir the air until it crashes with thunder and sparks with lightening. It was rather frightening at the time. I suppose it would be for a five year old.” Aura jumped as a bolt of lightning hit the gate post.

“Easy now. No turning into a dragon in the house, remember.” Dragas whispered as he put his arms around her waist.

“I have never liked storms. I think that’s why I never conjure them.” Aura leaned back against Dragas’ shoulder and tried to relax. It wasn’t helping. She could feel her dragon blood wanting to transform. She fought the urge.

Dragas gave her a soft kiss on the cheek. “I had always wondered about that. Your sister, Victra, loves a good storm. She nearly ripped off the roof of one of the turrets with that last one.  It’s always the quiet sister that needs watching.”

Aura swatted playfully at his hand on her waist and smiled. “I remember that one. There was damage up at the Dragon Sanctuary on Aster Cliffs and I had four dragons sleeping at the hearth for a week.”

“I remember Puff being cross because you made him give up his bed to Myra.” Dragas laughed.

“That wasn’t why he was cross. He gave her the bed willingly but I wouldn’t let him go to Brimstone Tavern unless he took the others with him. Horace only makes so much macaroni and cheese each day.” Aura laughed.

“One of these days someone will have to tell me why that dragon eats macaroni and cheese.” Dragas gave Aura a squeeze then let go of her. “Let’s have some tea before it gets cold.”

Aura nodded she rook his hand and let him guide her over to the low table in front of the fire. “Wait we need something to sit on.” Aura looked around and the cushions off the two overstuffed chairs came floating over to them and landed at their feet.

“I was just going to pull the dragons’ pillows over.” Dragas said.

“They are full of scales and Puff chews his nails.” Aura wrinkled her nose at the thought of sitting on the old nasty pillows. “I hope they are all right. He and Argonne were going to stay at the Sanctuary tonight. They are having a naming party for the new hatchlings.”

“Any chance they were chaos dragons?” Dragas grinned as he sat on the cushion.

Aura gave him a halfhearted glare as she sat down and started to pour the tea. She had just handed him a cup and picked up her own when a loud crash came from outside. The hand holding her tea cup erupted in scales and claws came out. She crushed the cup without thinking, splashing tea all over the table.

“Aura, settle down.” Dragas said soothingly. He got up and went to the front window. “Looks like the lightening hit Starr’s Bloodwort tree. It took a couple of branches.”

“It didn’t hit the house, did it?” Aura was worried. “She and Kyo are home.”

“No but it took down her fence. Speaking of five year olds, he must be frightened.” Dragas said. “She will have her hands full.”

“I doubt that child is afraid of anything. Remember they came here after their home was destroyed in a war. Endora said it was the worst thing she had ever seen. That says a lot. Endora has seen more than most.”

Dragas looked out the window. “Aura, if the thunderbirds conjured this storm, why do it here?”

“The phoenixes went north and got involved. The storm is most likely to damage the roosting area on Dragon’s peak.” Aura held out her hand to him. “After we lost Pyre the Elder, the younger ones have been without guidance and leadership. He would have never let them go.”

Dragas came back and sat down, pulling her close. “We lost many when Atlantis was destroyed.”

“Pyre, my grandparents and a few others I will miss dearly.” Aura nodded and looked at the mess she had made from breaking the cup. “I should clean this up.”

Dragas stood up. “I’ll do it and I’ll bring a fresh cup for you, as long as you promise to be careful with it.”

Aura nodded and smiled. “Thank you.” Aura’s eyes suddenly changed as she looked up at her husband. “Dragas, promise me you will never go off to war.”

Dragas knelt down. “I am a scholar not a warrior I have no reason to fight. I promise.” He kissed her slowly then went to the kitchen to fetch a cloth and a cup. He knew that was a promise he had every intention of keeping.

Aura looked over at the window and she could see the sky starting to clear. She breathed a deep breath of relief. She was sure there would be much damage to repair but some things she realized were too precious to lose.

A ray of sunshine came through the window and shown on the floor. It gave Aura hope that everything in her world would stay safe.
