Changing Times

The summons to Queen Taralen’s study was unexpected. Crown Princess Cara was at her loom when the request was made for her presence. She walked down the cold corridor and wondered what her daughter had done this time to anger the Queen.

She reached the door and knocked. Her mother bade her enter.   

“You asked to see me?” Crown Princess Cara bowed.

“Yes I did. Cara there is something I want to tell you before I speak to Endora.” Queen Taralen waved to a chair for the princess to sit.

“What is it?” Crown Princess Cara sat and awaited an answer.

“I will be skipping you in the line of succession. When I die Endora will become queen not you.” Queen Taralen said quietly.

Crown Princess Cara sat stunned. She had no idea that her mother would do this to her. Then she realized she should have known it was coming. Princess Endora had been taking on more of her duties in the past year. The duties of a Crown Princess!

“Why tell me now?” Crown Princess Cara was curious at the timing.

“I wanted you to know because when Endora marries she will get the official title of Crown Princess.” Queen Taralen told her daughter.

“The betrothal!” Crown Princess Cara shook her head. “I knew it was strange that you were trying to get her betrothed so young. Then my daughter goes and falls in love with a Prince. Is this what you have been waiting for? Or did you have it planned all along that I would never receive the crown?”

“I love you my daughter but you are not strong. This Realm needs a strong leader. Endora will be that leader.” Queen Taralen tried to take Crown Princess Cara’s hand but she pulled away.

“Will I be banished? Stripped of my powers and sent through the Mist Passage never to return?” Cara asked.

“No. You will be allowed to stay and help organize the everyday workings of the castle. That is if you choose to do so.”

“You want me to be a chatelaine, a key bearer?” Crown Princess Cara started to cry. She didn’t want to stay if she would be nothing more than a servant to her own daughter. She thought for a moment. “Drake has been asking if I can visit. May I be allowed to go to Faerieglen to think this over?”

“Yes. Talk it over with him. If you decide not to return I will understand. I know you still have feelings for the father of your daughters.” Queen Taralen said.

“He still has feelings for me as well.” Crown Princess Cara stood and bowed. “I will leave as soon as I am packed. I’m not sure where I will be staying but you can send word to me by way of Endora.”

Queen Taralen nodded. She watched her daughter leave. It had been a difficult decision but it was what was best for the Realm. She sat for a while before sending the guard to fetch Princess Endora.
