Summary: Katy agrees to meet with Doug but it doesn’t end well.
Katy leaned against her car in a park and ride off of the interstate. She had to be crazy to be here waiting for Doug to show up. They had made an arrangement to meet there but she was beginning to get second thoughts.
Katy was just about to get back in the car when Doug drove up. She braced herself for what was about to come.
“Where's the kids?” Doug asked as he got out of the car.
“They’re not here. I left them with Mitchie. You aren't going to see them until we get things straight.” Katy folded her arms in front of her. “I decided that I’m not going to put them in the middle of our problems.”
“Katy, this is crazy. They're my kids too.” Doug walked over to her. “I asked you to bring them. I want to see them.”
“You can want anything you feel like but that doesn't mean you'll get it. I want a million dollars. It doesn't look like I'm getting that, does it?” Katy glared at him. “I can’t even get a faithful husband.”
“Fine.” Doug looked at his feet. “Katy I told you I ended it with Gail. Why don’t you believe me?”
“You've lied to me before. You lied to me for months.” Katy yelled at him. “Why should I believe you now?”
“Call Gail and ask her.” Doug pulled his phone out of his pocket and held it out to her. “Call her!”
“I can’t believe you still have her number on your phone. I knew this was a mistake.” Katy turned to open the car door. “I'm out of here.”
Doug grabbed her by the arm. “Hey! I came here to talk. You’re not leaving! We're going to talk!”
Katy slapped him. It felt a little too good. She hadn't realized how angry she was until that moment. She had to restrain herself from doing it again.
Doug let go of her arm and took a step back. He put his hand up to the red mark on his face. “I deserved that. I only came here because I want my family back.”
“You're the one that threw it all away.” Katy glared at him as she rubbed her arm. “I didn't do anything. The kids didn't do anything. This is all on you.”
“I know.” Doug looked at his feet again. “Is there any hope for us at all?”
“I...I have to think.” Katy opened the car door. “I'll let you know what I decide.”
Doug sighed. “Yeah. Okay. Please tell the kids that I love them.”
“I’ll think about it. I’ll call you when I’m ready to talk again.” Katy got in behind the wheel and drove off.
It wasn't the meeting she had hoped for but considering all the crazy crap she had to deal with she felt lucky it wasn't worse.
Doug watched her leave the park and ride. He was the one that was responsible for his own pain. He was responsible for her pain too.
Doug climbed into his car and started the long drive home. There was only one thing left for him to do. He had to wait until she was ready to talk again. He wondered if that would ever happen after he saw the hurt in her eyes today.
Katy got three exits down the interstate and pulled off into a gas station. She leaned her head on the steering wheel and started to cry. She shouldn’t have come. It was too soon and she was still to raw to see him. Next time, she would be ready…maybe.
