“How are we to defeat this wizard with only a handful of people?” Endora asked Grim Ranger. “Doesn’t he have an army at his disposal?”
“Yeah but it’s not like us. His soldiers are all regular humans and we … well …ain’t.” Grim laughed.
“That’s a help. So the plan is to fight with our magick against this evil wizard.” Endora nodded. “How did he get Kyo?”
“I wasn’t watching him closely enough. He wondered off.” Lady Starr said.
Endora reached out and took Lady Starr’s hand to comfort her. “Are we sure the wizard has him and he’s not just setting something on fire somewhere?” Endora asked.
Starr shook her head. Her long red hair rippled in waves. She laughed softly, but her laughter was brittle. “I’m sure. I saw them when they grabbed him.”
“Why didn’t you shimmer to him and bring him back?” Endora asked Dulcina.
“I tried but there is a magickal field around the camp that bounced me back.” Dulcina looked sad. “I like the little fire starter. I wish I could’ve got him out.”
“We have more important things than the rescue of a child.” Leeas said "We are still vulnerable and we can still be defeated."
Lady Starr’s blue eyes turned red as blood. Her demon half was threatening to reveal itself. “He is my son. If he were yours, you would have been blasting your fire on them by now.”
He clenched his fists and made an obvious effort to stamp down his temper. Leeas had no need for a confrontation with the demon vampire. He walked off.
“Lady Starr, we will get him out before the battle. When is it?” Endora said.
“Noon tomorrow.” Grim said. “Any ideas Endora?”
“Yes Aura taught me some new spells since I saw you last. I think I know one that we can use to destroy the shield.” Endora said
“That is all well and good but you do not possess the skill for such spells.” Zoren said.
“Have you tried any spells to break the barrier?” Endora asked.
“No. I see no point in alerting Bartamas that we have magick.” Zoren said as he shrugged.
“He already knows or the field would not be up.” Endora said. “Kyo is part phoenix. Surely he would know that his mother was also a creature of magick.” Endora stood to face the old sorcerer fully. “Is it that you can’t or that you won’t try?”
Zoren looked startled at the boldness of such a small creature. He almost did not hear her, and when the meaning of her words sank in he did not have time to feel afraid.
Grim jumped to his feet. Starr looked on with her eyes glowing even hotter. Dulcina’s hand went to the dagger in her boot.
Even Leeas came back to the group when he heard Endora accuse the old man. “Answer her old man.”
“I am an old man … I have not the magick for the spell she speaks of and I dare say that she does not have it either.” The old wizard fired back. “Only a High Priestess of the Old Ways would know the spell. The only Fae that could wield that much power would be of Royal birth.”
Grim and Starr looked at each other and smiled. Dulcina grinned smugly.
Endora put her hands on her hips and glared at the old man. “Allow me to properly introduce myself. I am Princess Gaylen Endora of the Tuathan realm of Ogham-Duir. My sister, Aura, is the High Priestess of the Land of Una on Ogham-Duir. Any other doubts you have speak them now!
The old sorcerer looked at the little Fae with shock. “I had no idea. I am sorry Your Highness. One does not expect a Princess to show up during wartime to fight.”
“I help those that need it.” Endora said simply. “My friends needed help so here I am.”
“We need to get some rest.” Lady Starr said. “It’s late and nothing will happen until morning.”
Everyone found a place in the cavern to layout their bed roll and Leeas took first watch.
In the morning they were all quiet as they prepared for battle. Weapons and armor were put on.
Lady Starr’s hand shook as she armed herself with her double edged ripping blade. Grim Ranger put a hand on her shoulder to comfort her as he slid his sword and dagger into place.
Endora changed to a tunic of faerie woven material to shield her from harm. The shiny material was stronger than steel and light as a feather. She looked over at Dulcina and handed her spare tunic of the white shiny material. “I know it’s not you colour but it will keep you safe.”
“Thanks.” Dulcina took it and slipped it over her head. “Endora, do you think he’s all right?”
“Yeah. He may be little but he’s tough. Endora smiled thinking of the seven year old.
“We must hurry. Kyo will need to feed soon.” Lady Starr said. She knew that Kyo would feed on anyone that got too close when he was hungry, even a rescuer. The boy was half phoenix from his father but he was a demon and a vampire from his mother. It was a curious but dangerous combination.
Endora and Dulcina knew that spelled trouble. They both had been around Kyo enough to know what he was like when he was hungry.
They left the cavern and traveled south without speaking to the battlefield.
The two armies met as the noonday sun began its descent toward the western horizon.
The six warriors faced an arm of at least one hundred men. The opposing army was armed with small hand weapons but they looked well trained.
An evil laugh filled the air sending chills down spines on both sides of the battlefield.
