(2) Write a 500-word scene with that character. Reveal at least 5 things from that description in the scene to make your character come alive for the reader.
Cass put down the brush in her hand when she heard the clicking of heels on the linoleum floor of the basement hallway. Cleaning the delicate painting in front of her needed a steady hand and she knew that the woman coming up the hallway enjoyed making her jump.
“Miss Sterling!” Assistant curator Marie Benning stood in the doorway with a clipboard in her hand.
Cass turned on the stool she was sitting on and looked at the woman. “Yes Miss Benning?”
“Have you finished the Templeton?” The curator tapped a pen on the clipboard impatiently. She seemed disappointed that she hadn’t startled Cass while she was working.
“Yes. It’s over there. I finished it last night and the Wells piece as well.” Cass pointed to two canvases leaning against the wall.
“No date?”
“I…” Cass shook her head. “No, I didn’t have a date but I don’t know why that’s important.”
The assistant curator shrugged. “Just finish the Morgan. When your done go home.”
Cass picked up the brush and dipped it in the cleaning solution but she didn’t start working yet. “Is there anything else?”
“No.” The assistant curator started walking down the hallway then suddenly turned and looked back to see if Cass was working.
Cass sat there with the brush in her hand waiting for the assistant curator to get in the elevator.
The assistant curator sighed and walked the rest of the way to the elevator with a faster staccato than when she arrived.
Cass took a breath and started to clean the painting again. She jumped when her phone started to ring. “Damn!”
Cass picked up the phone and looked at the caller ID. It was Lacy. She hadn’t spoken to her sister Lacy in months. She answered the phone quickly.
“Hello Lacy?”
“Hey Cass. Um. Mom wanted to know if you were coming to Dad’s birthday dinner.”
“Yeah I told her I was coming last week. Lacy, why haven’t you called? I left you messages. Didn’t you get them?”
“I got them. I’ve been busy. Cass, do you remember Jack Black?”
“The actor?”
“No. The guy I dated in high school.”
“The one with the thing on his neck?”
“It’s a tattoo. Yeah. That one. We ran into each other and we have been hanging out.”
“Does Dad know because he threatened to take a chainsaw to him back then if you didn’t stop dating him?”
“He was just being dramatic like all artists are. He doesn’t know yet. I was thinking about bringing him to the dinner.”
“Oh no!” Cass put the brush down that she was still holding and got up from the stool to close the door. “I do not want to play peacemaker with you and dad again. Wasn’t he in prison or something?”
“God! Cassandra, we all can’t be perfect like you. I was just hoping for a little support but maybe I shouldn’t have bothered. See you at the dinner.”
The call disconnected. Cass glared at the phone and stuffed it in her purse before she went back to work. She had just gotten herself settled when the door opened she looked up and smiled the security guard. “Hi Mike.”
“Hello Miss Sterling.” Mike was carrying a wrapped canvas and a clipboard. He put the canvas on an empty easel and held out the clipboard. “I need your signature on this. This painting came today to be cleaned.”
Cass took the clipboard and looked for the name of the artist but the form didn’t have it listed. “Do you know what kind of a painting it is? There’s no description and the name of the artist is blank.”
“I have no idea. I just guard them.” Mike grinned and took the clipboard back. Thanks Miss Sterling.
“Thanks Mike.” Cass smiled at him.
Mike grinned and nearly ran into the door on his way out.
Cass chuckled then started to unwrap the painting on the easel. She pulled the wrapping off and stared at the canvas.
The face on the painting was staring back at her. It was her own face with her blue eyes and dark red hair flowing loose over one shoulder.
“What the hell?” Cass took step back.
A note fluttered to the floor from the wrappings that she was still holding. Cass bent down to pick it up. Her eyes widened as she read what was written on it.
“Cassandra Sterling, meet me at Five Crossing on Main street at eight tonight.”
It was signed with a heart with an arrow through it
“Oh shit!” Cass looked back at the painting.
