A portal of swirling mist appeared in the middle of the Great Enchanted Forest. The leaves swirled as the lone Fae stepped out and the portal closed behind her.
Endora pulled her bow from her shoulder and nocked an arrow. She looked around and listened. Her sister, Aura had told her to be careful in the woods because of reports of soldiers crossing the Ren-Una wall. Thankfully the woods were quiet.
Endora wasn’t worried. She could handle herself. She had proved herself many times in battle. She had been a part of more battles than any other Fae of her age which was an accomplishment considering she was female and royal.
A rustle to her left side had her on alert again. She pointed her bow and waited.
A graceful stag bowed its head to her as it came out of the brush. It was the King Stag of the Great Enchanted Forest. “Princess, you have come.”
“I said I would. Now that I’m here, are you going to tell me what was so urgent?” Endora lowered her bow out of respect for the stag.
“You have to see for yourself. Follow me.” The stag moved back through the brush and led Endora to a trail that she had never been on before.
The trail was deep within the forest. There was a wooden walkway littered with bright leaves.
“Where are we?” Endora looked around trying to get her bearings. “I have never seen this trail before.”
“We are in the darkest part of the Great Enchanted Forest. Few come this way.” The stag turned left at the top of a staircase carved into the bedrock. He looked back and nodded toward a copse of trees. “This way.”
Endora gave a cautious look around and followed the stag in-between two large fir trees. What she saw took her by surprise.
“We didn’t know who to summon for help.” The stag bowed his head again.
Endora walked forward and knelt by the doe she knew as Atle who was tending the injured Fae resting on a pile of branches. She pushed the dark hair back from the Fae’s face. She snatched her hand back.
“This is a Fae of the Peri court. We have no treaty with them. I wonder why is she here on Ogham-Duir?” Endora stood up. “We need to get her to Aura.”
“Lady Aura is traveling in the West Lands with the Prince.” The doe spoke up. “We thought that since you were Fae as well you could do something for her.”
“My skills are limited.” Endora knelt down again and looked the Fae over. “She has a cut on her leg. It’s infected. I need willow bark and plantain for a poultice.”
“I will get what you need. Thank you Highness.” The stag left the clearing.
“Where did you find her?” Endora looked at Atle
“She was on the walkway. She was carrying that bag.” The doe nodded toward a rich woven bag on the ground. “I brought her here and told the King.”
Endora dumped the bag out and found what looked like a diplomatic pouch. It was addressed to Queen Taralen of the Southern Court of the Tuathe. “She is far from our realm for a diplomatic mission.”
“Maybe she was lost.” Atle looked back at the unconscious Fae.
“Her faerie crystal should have brought her right to the Court. She isn’t wearing it.” Endora searched the bag for the crystal but didn’t find it. “That’s odd. It’s not in the bag either. Someone must have opened a portal and just sent her through without checking out if it was at the right place.”
The stag came back with the herbs. “Has she regained consciousness?”
“No. I’m going to take her to Court when I clean this wound up and bandage it.” Endora started to clean the wound. “I will need assistance. May Atle accompany me?”
“Yes. I will leave this in your capable hands Princess. I have other business to attend to.” The stag bowed and left the clearing.
The Fae woke up suddenly. She saw Endora. “Please take me to Princess Gaylen Endora? I must find her.”
“You have found me.” Endora pushed her back on the branches. “Stay still! You were injured. What is your name since you know mine?”
“I am Suman. Please. You must help me. Our Court is under attack from the Jin. Please before it’s too late.”
Endora froze. The Jin had a reputation that they were nearly as vicious as the Fomors. It may be too late already to save the Court of the Peri.
Endora nodded solemnly. “You have my word the Southern Court of the Tuathe will do what it can for your people.”
“Thank you Your Highness.” Suman looked hopeful.
Endora went back to bandaging the Fae’s leg. Now she had to convince her grandmother, Queen Taralen, to help.
