#2. Large and in charge!
Word Count: 469

Hazel was the office manager. She was a rotund woman and somehow she made that work for her. She was the law on the main floor of the office. She made the schedules. She ordered the supplies. She even made the coffee.

There wasn’t one thing that happened in that office she didn’t know about. She knew everything about everyone or so she thought.

It was a Tuesday like any other Tuesday. There was copying and filing to do and emails and invoices to send out. Everyone was acting normally. Nothing unusual was going on.

Hazel was watching all of this go on from her desk at the back of the office just to make sure. She did this every day and made no effort to hide that she was doing it.

But today was a different Tuesday. It was her birthday and there wasn’t time in the busy workday for shenanigans such as birthday celebrations. So Hazel sat and watched them work and wondered what she would do later when she left work.

Then the unusual Tuesday thing happened. The boss called an emergency staff meeting in the downstairs conference room. Everyone was required to come. No exceptions!

Staff meetings were not uncommon but they would rarely happen on the spur of the moment or on Tuesday. They were hardly ever held in the downstairs conference room. That was the one that the boss used for clients.

Hazel went down in the elevator when the floor was clear and walked into a surprise birthday party for her.

She looked each one of the people she worked with in the face before turning to the boss. With her hands on her hips, she looked at him and asked exactly what he thought he was doing throwing a party for her during business hours.

Instead of being intimidated like everyone else, the boss just walked over and hugged Hazel. He explained that he knew it was her birthday and he wanted to make it special for her because of all the wonderful things she did for his business.

Hazel didn’t know what to do. She hugged the boss back and started to cry.

He handed her a small package and she smiled as she opened it. It was a coffee mug that said “I’m in charge here.”

In the coffee mug was a velvet box with a gold heart shaped necklace. The boss explained that he gave that to her because she was the heart of the operation.

Cake and more presents were passed out and then it was time to get back to work. Hazel put coffee in her mug and put on her necklace and got them all settled down and working again.

It was certainly a good day to be one who was large and in charge.
