The dark night and the cold rain put a gloom on everyone's. mood. What was supposed to be a celebration was turned into a nightmare. That's what happens when you think a tent isn't necessary in early May.

She had checked the weather forecast twice before setting up for the party. It was supposed to be clear and warm instead of cold and raining.

Tessa passed out towels to the guests standing inside the covered porch. She apologized as she went around.

Some guests were already heading for the door. They had enough of this party.

“Everyone! May I have your attention? We still have plenty of food and drinks and there is birthday cake.” Tessa told them all.

Bob, Tessa's husband, came up behind her. “Thanks Hon. It was fun until the rain started.”

“I'm sorry I should have gotten a tent.” Tessa said. “Happy fiftieth.”

“It’s okay. I told you not to make a fuss. I guess the universe was on my side.” Bob chuckled.

“That's not funny. I'll get the waiters to pass out more champagne. “Tessa said.

Bob grabbed her hand. “Let them go. I only wanted to celebrate with you anyway.”

“Now you tell me.” Tessa smiled as he pulled her into his arms.

“I told you before but you didn't listen.” Bob said. “You were too excited with planning this disaster.”

Bob looked around to see most of the guests had already left and the rest were at the door waiting for their cars.

“Looks like I'm going to be getting my wish.” Bob smirked.

“I hope you don't have a stroke when you see the bill for this.” Tessa said.

“Can't be as bad my fortieth birthday with the band on the beach? How many permits did you need for that one?” Bob asked even though he knew.

“I had six but I needed seven according to the police that busted it up.” Tessa laughed. “Yeah. We had to bail a lot of people out that night.”

“No more parties! Promise me.” Bob looked her in the eye. “Tessa, promise me.”

“I promise no more parties.” Tessa sighed. “I haven't managed to throw a good one in years.”

“You've never thrown a good party.” Bob corrected her. “If it wasn't for your mother our wedding would have been a disaster.”

“I better get over to the door and make sure everyone is getting home in one piece.” Tessa said as she pulled out of Bob's arms.

“When they all leave we will have cake.” Bob said.

Two hours later, Tessa and Bob sat in the emergency room. Bob was recovering from an allergic reaction to the almond paste in the cake icing.

“Okay so this the worst birthday party ever. I thought they were using artificial flavoring in the icing.” Tessa said. “I promise no more parties.”

“Good because I don't think I will survive the next one.” Bob said.

Tessa sighed. “I don't think either of us will.”
