Rose Day (Part 1)
Feb. 3rd, 2013 08:37 amPart One: Dionne Dilemma
Princess Endora sat checking her list of people she was going to send roses to for Rose Day. She looked up as her maid and friend, Dionne, came in with a sour look on her face.
“What’s wrong Dionne?” Endora put down her quill. she had a feeling this would take a while.
“It’s nothing.” Dionne sighed. “It’s just I have no one to give a rose to on Rose Day.”
“I thought you were walking with that footman.” Endora was confused Dionne had been seeing the footman since before Yule.
“I was but when we went to Tree Palace I went walking with that Palace Guard and he found out.”
“I told you that would happen.” Endora reminded her. “Who told?”
“Your grandmother’s maid, that’s who, I’m never speaking to her again.” Dionne frowned. “It’s not like I told her beau she was in the stable last week with that new stable boy. We all know what happens in the stable.”
Endora wasn’t sure she really knew and wasn’t sure she actually wanted to know. “Maybe Cupid will give you another beau tomorrow.”
“If I see that naked mangy winged fool, I will stick that arrow right up his….”
“Dionne!” Endora fought to keep from laughing.
“Sorry, My Lady, but let’s face it. I suck at love. I am too fickle for my own good. No help from a Cupid will fix that.” Dionne sighed and started to pick up the basket full of dirty linen. As she bent over something fell out of her pocket.
Dionne I think you dropped something on the floor. Endora got up to see what it was.
Dionne looked down and frowned. “Oh that is from the new stable boy. He’s a cad.” Dionne went to pick it up and Endora beat her to it.
The Princess opened the note it had two hearts intertwined and a message. Endora looked at the maid. “’I want to be your fantasy.’ What does that mean? ”
“He thinks that I’m going to …. with him.” Dionne blushed.
“Dionne, I didn’t think you were that wild.”
“I’m not but he is trying to make it through every girl in the palace.” Dionne shook her head in wonder. “Janey said he sang love songs under her window until her father came out with a sword and ran him off. Besides I don’t have time for all that between my chores and being your official chaperone I have more than enough to keep busy.”
“I understand but you must talk to your footman and straighten things out.” Endora handed the note back.
“It won’t do any good he is walking with someone else now.” Dionne headed to the door with the basket. “Is there anything you need before I go to the laundry?”
“No but Paddrick wants me to meet him tomorrow for lunch at Brimstone Tavern. Could you make sure the tunic with the embroidered roses is clean and pressed?”
“Yes, My Lady. That one is pretty. He will like it. Do you want the pink sash too?” Dionne smiled.
“Yes. I think that will be fine. Grandmother is still not happy that I am wearing color but I don’t care. I’d like a bath with that rose soap that Queen March gave me for my birthday in the morning. Don’t forget to dress warmly tomorrow it’s still cold. Here is my rose list.” Endora took the list off the desk and handed it to Dionne.
“I’ll have them sent in the morning. One day there will be a machine where you just push a button and a picture of a rose goes to everyone you love.” Dionne took the list and tucked it in her pocket.
“That will be a very sad day. There is nothing like a real rose and the way it smells.” Endora sighed. “Not to mention the smile it gives one to get a rose.”
“Indeed.” Dionne laughed. “Good night, My Lady.”
“Good night, Dionne.” Endora stretched and went to bed as Dionne left. Rose Day was always full of surprises and this was her first one since the betrothal.
