THE DRAGONS OF ASTER CLIFFS

PROLOUGE

The Land of Ogham-Duir lays just a few leagues from the north east coast of Atlantis. In the early days it was nothing but forest and magick. That started to change when it began to be settled by human and magickal creature alike. Territories and Kingdoms were marked out and the small land mass became a thriving place all on its own.

Many creatures came of their own will to Ogham-Duir: the chimera, griffins and hippogriffs. They were looking for new territory. The phoenix came as well because of the loss of their home roosting area. They were all looking for a new home.

Some creatures were brought to Ogham-Duir. The dragons were brought to Ogham-Duir to preserve their magick. They quickly made the small land mass their home. Some of the later settlers believed the dragons were indigenous to the land but that was not true.

The story of the dragons of Ogham-Duir hasn’t been told for many generations. Only the draconian people know the truth. I am a draconian. I am the granddaughter of Lord Retalon Draconis and the eldest daughter of Lord Drake Draconis. Here is the true story.

Excerpt from “The History of Ogham-Duir”, as recorded by Lady Aura Draconis, High Priestess of the Land of Una and caretaker of Myrdren.

CHAPTER 1

Lord Ulster Aster stood on the deck of a most impressive ship. There was no other of its kind. It was able to carry thirty men and enough supplies to get to Atlantis. That was the destination they were seeking. The journey would take three months at least with good weather.

Lord Aster was not thinking about the ship he was on but of the land that was quickly disappearing. That was his home and he would most likely never see it again. He was making the journey for a reason that few would understand. He wanted to save the dragons.

Deep within the belly of the ship were five mating pairs of elemental dragons. Lord Aster had searched all over the land to find them. He brought them here to save them from the Knights that wished to gain glory by killing a dragon. It was barbaric but it was a reality in the land from whence he came.

The dragons were nearly wiped out in the land he was leaving. It took some searching to find the ones that were on the ship. They were all very young and orphaned after some Knights had slain their parents. Some were barely out of the egg before he discovered them. They were cold and hungry and some had been ill and near death.

The last speck of land disappeared from view and Lord Aster went to check on his cargo. He descended into the area where the dragons were in their iron cages. Most were the size of a small dog. He was relieved to find them all sleeping peacefully. Some were spread out, others were curled tightly and most were softly snoring. He sat on a crate and watched them for a while before retiring to his bunk at the other end of the ship.

As the journey progressed Lord Aster discovered something very curious about the dragons he had chosen. None of them ate flesh. They would push it back out of their cages and only eat the vegetables that they were given to them. It seemed strange to him that the one beast that had been feared the most had no taste for flesh.

Lord Aster made the notation in his journal about the eating habits of the dragons. He had been keeping the journal since he had started to gather the creatures. He regularly recorded observations. This journal would be used later to care for the dragons properly in their new home. He was hoping for a lush land. Atlantis was really only a stop until he could find them a more permanent home.

At the end of ten weeks the scout called out that he saw land. They had arrived a few weeks early but that was for the good. Food stores were low and there wasn’t much in the way of fruit or vegetables left. Lord Aster started to make the dragons ready for unloading. He had blindfolded them to get them on the boat so he would need to do the same to get them off again.

After finishing the preparations to unload the dragons, Lord Aster came up on deck. He saw a rather official looking man standing on the dock waiting for the boat to be moored. Lord Aster wasn’t sure if this was a good sign or a bad omen. The man was expressionless as he patiently waited for the ship’s docking.

The gangplank was finally lowered and Lord Aster walked down to the docks. The official looking gentleman stepped up to him.

“Lord Ulster Aster?” The man asked.

“Yes, that is my name.” Lord aster said. “May I ask yours?”

“I am Odon Borda. I am a domestic’s clerk with the Atlantians government. My office oversees the transfer of livestock. I see you have submitted a permit to transport livestock to Atlantis. What kind of livestock do you have?”

“I have ten dragons in the cargo hold of this ship.” Lord Aster told the man. “I intend on breeding them.”

“Dragons? That is not livestock! They are a danger to the public. I’m afraid they must be destroyed.” Mr. Borda told him. “I’m sorry.”

“No! Please, this is their only chance to escape extinction. Please tell me who I must talk to, to resolve this issue.” Lord Aster begged.

“I’m sorry. It is the law. The High Council is the only authority that can override the law. I will arrange a meeting for you. You must put your dragons in the quarantine area until a decision is made. I promise they will not be harmed until after the decision is made.”

“I understand.” Lord aster nodded. “My dragons need fresh produce. They have had little over the last two weeks. The ships stores were running low and there was little to be spared for them.”

“Produce? You do not feed them flesh?” The clerk questioned him.

“They will not eat it. Apples are there favorite as well as thick porridge with honey.” Lord Aster told him.

“Sounds like my youngest child.” Mr. Borda finally smiled. “Do you believe they will continue this behavior?”

“I have tried to give them flesh. They refuse it. Even the fat of animals is repugnant to them.”

“Let us hope that it stays that way for all our sakes. Is that them?” Mr. Borda pointed to a cargo flat being lowered onto the dock.

The cages with the dragons were being unloaded carefully by the crew of the ship. Even so, one of the littlest was wailing in distress. Lord Aster came over to where they were and reached his hand in to the cage to stroke the small beast. “Hush now Myrdren. You’re in no danger.” The little one quieted down.

“He’s barely out of the egg. Are they all like him?” Mr. Borda was amazed at how small the dragons were.

“Most of them are barely out of the egg. They are quite small.” Lord Aster told the clerk. “Where is the quarantine area?”

Mr. Borda pointed to a nearby warehouse. “That is where we put the animals. I have two men coming to pick them up already but they were prepared for sheep or cows not dragons.”

“I hope it will be warm enough for them.” Lord Aster said as he continued to stroke the small dragon. “Some nights at sea were quite chilly. I was afraid I would lose one to sickness but I was diligent at keeping them warm enough.”

“The warehouse is quite snug. Livestock is precious here so all precautions are made for their comfort. It is usually quite warm inside.”

“That’s good to know.” Lord Aster gave the little dragon one last pat as it curled up.

Just then two men with a large wagon came to the docks. “Mr. Borda, where is the stock for quarantine?” The older of the two men asked.

“Here it is.” Mr. Borda pointed to the iron cages full of dragons. “Please care gently for Lord Aster’s cargo.” Mr. Borda told the men.

“What the heck? Those are baby dragons.” The younger man said. “I can’t believe what I’m seeing. How many are here?”

“Ten. Please be careful. I do not want them frightened or mistreated. I will be by to check on them as soon as I have met with the High Council.”

“Yes, My Lord. We will take good care of them.” The older man said.

“Could you give them some apples?” Lord Aster said. “They will be hungry soon.”

“Yes, My Lord. They don’t bite do they?” The older man asked.

“No but they do like to lick your hand.” Lord Aster smiled.

Both men nodded and started to load the dragons on the wagon.

“They are in good hands. Come with me and I will get you in to see the High Council. If this isn’t a special circumstance I don’t know what would be.” Mr. Borda said as he led Lord Aster along the street towards a large official looking building made of marble.

Lord Aster stood in the corridor of the great marble building in front of the high doors to the High Council chambers. He was beginning to worry that he would not have a chance to speak to the High Council before they left for the day. Mr. Borda had gone in ahead of him to explain the situation.

The doors opened and a guard came out and motioned him inside. Lord Aster took a deep breath and walked inside. He was nervous for his little charges.

The High Council sat on a dais in large stone chairs with rich cushions. The three men and two women had severe faces as Lord Aster stepped up beside Mr. Borda.

“Lord Ulster Aster, is it true that you have brought ten dragons to Atlantis with the intent of breeding them?” A man in a red and gold robe asked.

“Yes that is my intent. The dragons are in danger of extinction. I am merely trying to preserve a noble and magickal beast.” Lord Aster acknowledged.

A veiled woman in a blue robe asked. “Dragons are dangerous why do you care what happens to them?”

“A dragon is a creature of magick. Every time we lose one, we lose so much more. We lose a part of magick itself. I have brought babies, hatchlings. I will keep them contained and away from humans if possible.” He answered her.

“I sympathize with you, Lord Aster, but there is not the space for such a noble endeavor here on Atlantis.” The man said. “May I recommend that you take your dragons to Ogham-Duir where there is space and the human population is sparse?”

“I have never heard of this place. Where does it lie?” Lord Aster asked.

“It is just a few leagues off the northeast coast of Atlantis. I have a home there myself. I am Lord Retalon Draconis. My son, Drake, sits on the Council there. I am sure he will assist you in any way he can.”

“Thank you. I feared that my little dragons would be slaughtered.” Lord Aster admitted. “Mr. Borda said it was the law.”

“I would never let that happen.” Lord Draconis said. “I am a draconian. They are my kin.”

“A ‘draconian’?” Lord Aster had never heard of this.

“I am a human and a dragon. I can shift from one to the other at will. There are few of my kind left. Our numbers can be counted far too easily. I fear, like the dragons you brought here, my kind is also in danger of extinction.” Lord Draconis said sadly.

Lord Aster nodded. “I will arrange transportation for the dragons as soon as possible. This Ogham-Duir, is it lush with plant life?”

“Very much so. Mr. Borda said that the little dragons were not fond of flesh. Is that true?” the woman in the veil asked.

“They refuse it. There is one that throws it out of his cage at the wall. He is a bit of a handful. It’s an earth elemental of all things.” Lord Aster smiled thinking of little Myrdren.

Lord Draconis chuckled. “All dragons, as well as the draconian, can be temperamental, Lord Aster. You would do well to remember that in the future.”

“I will heed that advice well.” Lord Aster smiled. “If I may be excused?”

Lord Draconis nodded. “Good fates to you.”

Lord Aster smiled. “And to you, Lord Draconis. Thank you all.” He bowed and took his leave from the High Council.

Lord Aster rushed off to make arrangements for the dragons to be transported to this new land called Ogham-Duir.

CHAPTER 2

Making arrangements to transport the ten little dragons proved to be more difficult than Lord Aster thought it would be. As soon as the boat captains heard the cargo was to be dragons they withdrew their services. Lord Aster was nearly at his wits end when a captain approached him.

The small man bowed his head to the Lord and smiled.    “My Lord, I’m Captain Bailey of the ‘Blackstone Raider’, I hear you have some cargo to be taken to Ogham-Duir. Dragons, was it?”

“That is correct I have 10 small dragons that I want to take to Ogham-Duir. Will you assist me?” Lord Aster asked.

“Yes My Lord.” Captain Bailey smiled. “Lord Draconis sent me to assist you. He heard that you were having difficulty arranging transportation for them.”

“Lord Draconis is correct. Most captains withdraw as soon as they find out what I want to transport. Do you know Lord Draconis well?” Lord Aster asked.

“I know Lord Drake Draconis quite well but it was Lord Retalon Draconis that sent me. I do jobs for Lord Drake. He and I went to Academy together.” The captain told him.

“I am surprised. You would think a family as important as the Draconis family would have tutors for their children.” Lord Aster mused.

“Everyone goes to Academy here on Atlantis. Education is mandatory for all citizens. No one is exempt not even the slaves and servants.” Captain Bailey told him.

“That’s an admirable accomplishment for a society.” Lord Aster nodded. “Education is not as available where I come from. Only the higher classes have it.”

Captain Bailey nodded. “It’s that way in a lot of the world. You wouldn’t believe it but there are whole civilizations that have no education at all. Such a shame.” Captain Bailey shook his head.

“Yes it is.” Lord aster agreed.

“What part of Ogham-Duir do you want to take the dragons to?” Captain Bailey asked.

“I don’t know the land at all. The dragons need a warm environment to survive.”

“Ah then you are going to the right place. It’s never very cold there. There are several places that you may want to consider. There is the Kingdom of Zestra and also the Kingdom of Una. Una is a large valley in the center of the land and Zestra is in the southwest. Come to my boat with me and I will show you maps of both.” The Captain offered.

Lord Aster followed the captain to a small ship on the far side of the harbor. It was a sturdy vessel and much larger than the cargo vessels he had been trying to engage. It looked more like a sea faring vessel than a transport.

“Your ship is beautiful, Captain.” Lord Aster said as they walked up the gang plank. “This is quite a bit larger than a transport. What kind of work do you do?”

“Thank you. I take Lord Drake and others to the other lands around Atlantis. Some are quite far so a larger vessel is needed.”

“I see. I suppose those lands are well populated and no place for small dragons.” Lord Aster said.

“That is true. I’m afraid that Ogham-Duir is the only place those dragons of yours will be welcome. Most of the lands around here are larger than a day’s travel across. There is one place the young Lord has requested that I take him that has no dry land just marshes and bogs. He has a friend there. Well I think she may be a little more than a friend.” Captain Bailey laughed.

The two men entered a large room in the forward part of the ship. The walls were covered in maps. Captain Bailey walked over to one and looked at it.

“Here it is. Ogham-Duir isn’t very large but I think it will serve your purpose. This is Una and this is Zestra.” The Captain pointed out the areas on the map. “There are some cliffs here that you may want to consider for a sanctuary but you know your dragons better than I.”

“I should like to talk to the rulers of those two kingdoms about any final decisions of a formal sanctuary. For now I just need to get them over there. Where will we be sailing into? I see no harbor marked on this map.” Lord Aster asked as he studied the map.

“We will sail into this cove and then ferry over to the shore. Will your dragons be able to handle that?” Captain Bailey pointed to a curved area of the coast line.

“I think we should take a few at a time. That would be all a skiff could handle.” Lord Aster said.

“We have more than one skiff. We could put three or four in each and then we can get them in one trip.”

“That sounds like an excellent plan. When shall we depart?”

“The morning is fine. As long as the weather holds, it will take less than a day to get there but we may need to spend the night in the cove and take the dragons over in the day light. It will be easier on your dragons and my crew.” Captain Bailey told him.

“Agreed. I will see you at first light. Now I must make arrangements for transportation to your vessel.”

“No need. My crew will meet you at the quarantine area just before dawn.”

“Thank you. Captain. Until the morning then?” Lord Aster smiled and left the Captain at his charts for the journey.

The day dawned with blue skies and fair winds. The crew of the ‘Blackstone’ was waiting for Lord Aster when he arrived at the quarantine area. The crew took the dragons to the ship in a cart. They were loaded aboard the ship quickly and without much fuss.

All were quite calm with the exception of Myrdren who was howling up a storm. Lord Aster had to shush him several times and stroke him to get him calmed down.

“That one seems to be a handful.” Captain Bailey said as he eyed the small earth dragon.

“Myrdren is the youngest of them all. He hadn’t even come out of his shell when I found him. His mother had just been slaughtered by a knight. The fool was about to smash the egg when I got there. I took the egg and Myrdren hatched in the back of my carriage on the way back to my family home. I heard later that same knight went to battle another dragon and was killed.” Lord Aster told him as he rubbed Myrdren’s head lovingly.

“It seems the fates took care of him. Such a waste they are very beautiful creatures.” Captain Bailey said.

“They are very gentle creatures for the most part. They do have tempers.” Lord Aster smiled at one of the fire dragons. “Argone likes to scorch bottoms when she is mad.”

Captain Bailey laughed. “I’ll try not to get her upset with me then. You have had them all since they were young?”

“Yes. I suppose that is why humans do not upset them. In the wild they would shy away from us unless confronted. These little ones have always known the presence of humans. I hope I have not done grave harm to them.”

“They seem fine and they will do well on Ogham-Duir.” Captain Bailey called out to his crew. “Let’s get going! We are wasting daylight!”

The crew of the ‘Blackstone Raider’ started to hustle around pulling the ropes and preparing the sails for the short trip to Ogham-Duir.

The seas were calm and the trip took little time. It was nearing dusk when they arrived in the cove of Ogham-Duir.

“We will put down anchor here and in the morning we will take the dragons to shore by skiff.” Captain Bailey told Lord Aster,

Lord Aster looked at the shore and smiled. “It looks like a place where they will be able to thrive.”

“I have no doubt that they will. Lord Drake will meet us in the morning on shore. He will be able to guide you from there as to where you should settle. He should know best being a draconian.”

“Yes he would. Thank you, Captain and now I must feed my dragons before they settle for the night.” Lord Aster turned and walked toward the cargo hold.

“Of course My Lord.” Captain Bailey said.

The sun was shining as the skiffs carrying the dragons scrapped the shore of the cove. The dragons could tell they were somewhere new and a sense of curiosity grew among them.

As expected, Lord Drake Draconis was there to greet them. A much younger version of the man Lord Aster had met on Atlantis greeted them with a smile. “Hello Lord Aster. My father told me to expect you and your hatchlings.”

“I am honored by your greeting, Lord Draconis.” Lord Aster said with a smile.

“Bailey, thank you for your assistance. I know it must have been a shock to your crew to see so many dragons.” Lord Drake said smiling.

“I have a feeling they are quite immune to dragons by now, My Lord. You have traveled with us many times and they have seen you in your dragon state often.” Captain Bailey said.

“That is quite true.” Lord Drake smiled. “I do have a habit of transforming in front of your crew.”

Captain Bailey laughed. “It only happens every time you go out with us.”

“That often?” Lord Drake laughed. He turned to the other man. “Lord Aster, I have been talking to King Unbane and King Zestrain about the hatchlings. Both Kings are agreeable to allowing them in their Kingdoms. You only have to choose where you wish to settle.”

“I would like some guidance on that, Lord Draconis. Where do you feel we will be most welcome?” Lord aster asked.

“The terrain is better in Zestra. There are more places for them to nest and establish themselves but I would hope that you would allow them to find their own homes. I fear captivity would damage their progress.” Lord Drake said.

“That is a valid concern. I have thought that when they are able to care for themselves I would seek permission to let them explore and find their own place in this land. I do worry about an over eager hunter, however.” Lord Aster worried.

“We will get the leaders of the Kingdoms together and see to some type of law prohibiting the unsanctioned hunting of dragons.” Lord Drake said.

“This should be done as soon as possible.” Lord Aster agreed.

“Yes I agree but until then I have brought a cart to transport you to my family home.” Lord Drake waved two men with a cart over to where the dragons were waiting.

“Thank you Lord Draconis.” Lord Aster said gratefully

“You will find that my father and I will be more in your debt than you could ever be in ours for the preservation of our kin.” Lord Drake said seriously.

“I will do whatever I can to preserve their species. I may not be their kin but I will be their advocate.” Lord Aster vowed.

“We shall get along fine, Lord Aster.” Lord Drake turned to the Captain. “Until I see you again, my friend, stay safe and good fates to you.”

“Good fates to you both.” Captain Bailey turned and ordered his men to return to the ship.

CHAPTER 3

The trip to the Draconis estate was short. When they were within the high walls of the estate, stable hands came out to help unload the cart with the dragon hatchlings on it. The dragons were unloaded into the courtyard and the iron cages were lined up along the inside wall of the stable

“Lord Aster, you may let them roam the estate. It is completely walled they will not be able to wander far. It would do them good to stretch a bit.” Lord Drake suggested.

“Thank you.” Lord Aster started to unlock the iron cages that the little dragons had been living in for weeks.

Some were very timid and refused to come out at first but all eventually came out and rolled in the thick grass of the stable yard and started to play.

“They seem right at home already.” Lord Drake said as one of the little air dragons chased a butterfly across his feet.

The little dragon known as Myrdren sat next to his cage door and looked around. He had been one of the last to leave his restraints. The other earth dragon by the name of Myra came to sit next to him. They took comfort in being close after being separated by the iron bars for so long.

Lord Aster saw the two earth dragons sitting together and he smiled. They were the two most timid of the group. It would take those two longer to become comfortable with all the changes.

Cannae and Brater, the air dragons, were so engrossed in chasing butterflies and flying bugs that they ran into each other head on and fell back on their bottoms. They quickly jumped back up and went back to chasing anything that flew past.

Argone and her fiery companion Eros had found the paving stones of courtyard a great place to bask in the sunshine. The stones were warm in the mid day sun and both decided to lay belly up for a bit.

Pilar and Dontus, the water dragons, had found the water in the large fountain of the courtyard a great place for a swim. The water dragon statue fascinated them. It was large and coiled up. Both of the little dragons tried to sit the same way and fell into the water splashing each other in the process.

Brida and Nort, the chaos dragons, went from sitting still to running full speed, getting into anything they could find in between. They ran into horses’ stalls and in and out of boxes and crates in the stable. They also ran in circles around the courtyard and stable yard bumping into everything.

Lord Drake smiled at the joy of it all. He was happy to see them play. It was like a bunch of little children getting into mischief.

Lord Aster was a bit overwhelmed at it all. The dragons had embraced the freedom of the moment but he wondered how he would get them back into the cages to take them to their final home. He didn’t have to wonder long as some went back into the iron cages to nap. Myrdren and Myra waited until Lord Aster shooed them back in.

With all the dragons back in their cages and the cages relocked, Lord Aster sighed with relief. He was glad that they had gotten out but it worried him that they would get out of hand.

Lord Drake looked at the sleeping dragons and smiled. “Lord Aster, I have let King Unbane and King Zestrain know that you wish to speak to them about the hatchlings. They will come here to meet with you.”

Lord Aster nodded and the two men entered the large house. Lord Drake showed him into a large sitting room where he offered Lord Aster a seat.

”I hope you get set up soon.” Lord Drake said

“It will be good to get them settled and a sanctuary set up. Tell me which one of the Kings seems more receptive to the idea.” Lord Aster inquired.

“I have to say that King Zestrain is the most receptive. He believes that the dragons are sacred and must be protected. King Unbane looks at them as curiosities more than magical beings. He doesn’t have the connection to magick that King Zestrain has. King Zestrain was trained as a Druid after he attended the Atlantis Academy.”

“Really? I would think that improper for a King to have such training.” Lord Aster found that surprising.

“Nor at all! Lord Aster you will find many Druids and priestesses here on Ogham-Duir. Magick is just as revered here as it is in Atlantis.  My own sister is a priestess of Atlantis.”

“Does she stay secluded in Atlantis?” Lord Aster asked.

“No. The priestesses are free to go where they choose. You will know them by their blue veils.” Lord Drake told him.

“There was a woman on the council that had blue veils. I couldn’t see her face.”

“That was the High Priestess, Lady Vena. She is my sister’s mentor. Benna speaks highly of the woman. “ Lord Drake smiled as he thought of his sister.

“She was very concerned for the safety of others around the dragons.” Lord Aster told him.

“That sounds like her. She can be quite cautious. Benna is not allowed to transform while she is with the other priestesses. Lady Vena believes that it is dangerous for the others. That is why Benna comes to visit me often. We have a need to transform. It is difficult to stay in human form for a long period of time.”  Lord Drake told him.

“I see. I had never met a draconian before. This is quite interesting to me.” Lord aster admitted. “Must you stay in your dragon form for a certain time?”

“We try to stay human as much as possible but the urge can become quite strong to transform. We must change then into a dragon for a while. Sometimes a few hours are enough but I find that I need a few days at least. My sister will spend a whole month in her dragon form. She comes here during that time. It’s almost time for her to visit.”

“I suppose you are elemental like the others.”

“Yes, my family carries the fire trait. There are families that carry the other elements. One family in the land to the north carries the air trait.. Lord and Lady Wyvern and their four children visit Atlantis about once a year. My father says there is a family with the water trait that lives in Lemuria. We tend to stay near lands where magick is accepted.”

“Are there no families with the earth trait?” lord aster asked.

“I don’t know. I’m sure my father would have that information. I suppose you want to study us now.” Lord Drake smiled in amusement.

“No. It’s more curiosity than anything. I wonder how the dragons would react to a draconian in the dragon state. I’m thinking of caretakers for them. Asking a draconian to care for them would not be an insult, would it?” lord aster asked.

“No I believe it would be an honor for any draconian to be able to protect our kin. I should let you rest after such a long journey.” Lord Drake pulls a bell cord and a young woman comes to the door. Take Lord Aster to his chambers and bring him some refreshments as well.

The young woman bowed.

“Thank you, Lord Draconis.” Lord Aster stood and followed the woman upstairs.

When Lord Aster laid down to rest he was amazed that he was very tired. He fell into a deep sleep quickly. He didn’t wake until morning.

Chapter 4

CHAPTER 4

There was a commotion in the courtyard early the next morning. Lord Aster awoke and immediately thought of the dragons in the barn just off the courtyard. He dressed quickly and rushed down stairs and into the courtyard to find a red fire dragon standing there looking at the small dragons with curiosity most of the little ones were in quiet awe but there was one that was howling loudly.

Myrdren had decided that he wasn’t happy in the cage. He wanted out and he decided to howl until someone let him out. Lord Aster walked slowly past the large fire dragon to the cages where the little dragons were. He had to quiet Myrdren down before he woke the entire countryside.

Lord Aster wondered if it was Lord Drake for just a moment but when the dragon looked surprised to see him he knew it wasn’t. The dragon followed him with its eyes as he walked over to the cages and to Myrdren. He shushed Myrdren who looked at the lock and then bit it. Myrdren growled with the lock in his mouth. Lord Aster shushed him again.

Could this be Lady Benna? Lord Aster had no idea who it could be. Lord Retalon wouldn’t be surprised to see him at the family home. He turned to look at the dragon as it watched him.

Just then Lord Drake came out of the house and walked over to the dragon. He put his hands out palms down and a wall of fire rose around him. When the fire cleared he was a dragon of a similar shade of red.

The other dragon nuzzled him affectionately. The second dragon was obviously someone close to him. They separated and the new dragon started to come over to the small dragons in the cages but hesitated when Myrdren let out another set of howls.

Lord Drake bent his head down and the wall of fire came back around him. When it cleared he was human again.

“Lord Aster, this is my sister Lady Benna. It’s alright if you want to release them to play in the courtyard. She will not harm them.” Lord Drake said.

Lord Aster nodded and took the keys from his pocket to unlock the cages. He started with Myrdren. As soon as Myrdren saw the key he let go of the lock. Lord Aster made a face as he handled the slobbery lock. The door opened and Myrdren shot at straight through Lord Aster’s legs for Lady Benna.

“Myrdren! Come back here!” Lord Aster shouted. He was afraid for the little one.

It was too late. Myrdren was already at Lady Benna’s feet looking up at her. Lady Benna nuzzled him. Lord Aster and Lord Drake stood there in shock. Myrdren was the most timid of all the dragons and he had no fear of the adult female fire dragon. The other dragons started to howl when they saw Myrdren getting attention. They wanted out now.

Lord Aster released the others quickly and they all went to the large dragon to get some attention. Myrdren got pushed to the back in the process and he wasn’t happy he sat on his bottom and howled in protest. The large dragon gave him a lick on the top of his head to sooth him. She lay down and let the little dragons climb on top of her and play. Myrdren snuggled next to her head. Myra shyly came and sat next to Myrdren. The large dragon snorted and the Myra came to snuggle on the other side of her head.

“I think that answers your question about caretakers being draconian.” Lord Drake laughed.

“I shouldn’t let them disturb your sister while she is here. She is obviously here to rest.” Lord Aster said

“She is having as much fun as they are.” Lord Drake smiled. “I am very surprised at the little Myrdren. He always seems so timid.”

“You’re not the only one. He has never seen an adult dragon. I thought he would be petrified. I am pleased that he was the first to want to go to her. I expected the fire dragons to be the first ones. She is their element after all. He seems quite taken with her.” Lord Aster said.

“I wouldn’t worry about the fire dragons. Benna seems quite taken with Myrdren. She works in a nursery with small children. I suppose baby dragons are not much different than baby humans.” Lord Drake told him. “I remember you saying that Myrdren hatched in your carriage that makes it even more surprising.”

“Indeed. I should see about some breakfast for them.” Lord Aster said, as he watched them playing.

“No need. I asked one of the stable boys to go get some fruit and vegetables for them.” Lord Drake said. “I wasn’t sure if they had a preference so I told the boy to bring a little of everything,”

“Thank you that was very kind of you, Lord Draconis.”

“Please we will be working closely together for a long time so I think we should start to be less formal with each other. I am Drake my father is Lord Draconis.”

“Then please call me Ulster.” Lord Aster offered a hand in friendship and Lord Drake shook it with a smile. “I suppose I should round them up to be fed.” Lord Aster looked at the dragons as they were playing on and around Benna.

The stable boy came into the courtyard with a wheelbarrow full of produce. The little dragons started to run for it. Benna snorted and they stopped in their tracks she went to the wheelbarrow and started to pluck things out to give to each of them. She made an orderly process out of what could have been a free for all.

“Let us leave them in her care. We have an appointment with the Kings in less than an hour in the city.” Lord Drake said.

“There is a city here?” Lord Aster asked. He had only seen the small village when they were coming here.

“Yes. It is at the foot of that mountain there.” Lord Drake pointed to a misty covered mountain peak in the distance. “That is where the majority of non-magickal humans live on Ogham-Duir.”

“I see. Well, I must change then. I will meet you in the hall in fifteen minutes.” Lord Aster said.

“That sounds good. I need to change as well.” Lord Drake looked at his rough breeches and linen shirt. “In fifteen minutes then?”

Fifteen minutes later the two men were on their way to the City Of Man, the Capital of the Kingdom of Una. They were to meet the two kings that had the most magickal populations.

At the large marble building in the middle of the city the King of Una, King Unbane, and King Harrod of Zestra waited to meet with Lord Aster and Lord Drake. The two men walked up the stairs and entered a Great Hall. They greeted the Kings with deep bows.

“I understand that you have already brought dragons to Ogham-Duir.” King Unbane started the meeting.

“Yes I brought 10 small dragons. They are still hatchlings really. I have been their guardian since they were found next to their dead mothers. I want to preserve the species and I was hoping that I could acquire some land here to set up a sanctuary for them.” Lord Aster explained.

“That is an admirable thing, Lord Aster, however I fear for the safety of my people.” King Unbane said.

“King Unbane, the dragons refuse to eat flesh and are quite docile.” Lord Aster told him.

“They are still babies. How do you know what they will be like when they are full grown? If they begin to crave flesh later then no one will be safe from them. I fear the future of your charges may be cursed already.” King Unbane said.

“Unbane, he is asking for a chance.” King Harrod said. “I think they are worthy of at least a chance.”

“Then let him take them to your lands. I am sorry, Lord Aster. I will not allow a sanctuary in my kingdom.” King Unbane said.

“Well, I do not have the same fears. Lord Aster, there are some cliffs on the southern shore of Zestra that would be ideal for your dragons. It is isolated for the most part and there is only one way up or down. That is by foot. Are any of them flying yet?” King Harrod offered.

“No. Their wings are still underdeveloped for flying. I do not believe all of them will fly, however. I have water and earth dragons they are wingless.” Lord Aster told him.

“Water dragons? There is a lake near the cliffs that has a channel to the sea. You may want to look at it before making a final decision.” King Harrod said.

“Thank you. I would like to do that tomorrow if possible. I would like to get started on construction as soon as arrangements can be made.” Lord Aster said.

“Then it is settled.” King Unbane said. “The dragons will go to Zestra. Lord Draconis, I heard there was a sighting of a full grown dragon over the Village Of Brimstone. Have you been exercising your wings again?”

“No Sire. It was my sister that was spotted, not I.” Lord Drake told the King.

“Is it that time of the year already? I know she only comes to Ogham-Duir when she is in her dragon form. There were several frightened citizens this morning.” King Unbane said.

“I will tell her to curtail her flying over populated areas. I would not want the people of your kingdom frightened for no reason.” Lord Drake said.

“See that you do. I have other matters to attend to. It has been an honor to meet you, Lord Aster. I only wish I could have been more help.” King Unbane said.

“It has been my honor, Sire.” Lord Aster bowed to King Unbane.

King Unbane nodded and left the room.

“Don’t let Unbane get to you, Lord Aster. He has a fear of magick.” King Harrod said. “I have no such fear. I shall expect you at the Crystal Fortress tomorrow afternoon. From there we can go look at the cliffs and assess their suitability. I take that you know how to ride?”

“Yes Sire I do. I will see you then.” Lord Aster said.

“If I may, Sire, I would like to accompany Lord Aster.” Lord Drake requested.

“Yes. I think that would be agreeable.” King Harrod said. “I also have duties. I must get back to Zestra or the Queen will send out a search party shortly.” He laughed. “My wife worries too much. Are you married Lord Aster?”

“No My Lord. I haven’t found the right woman. I need to find one that shares my interests and doesn’t think I’m disagreeable.” Lord Aster said.

King Harrod laughed out loud. “I wish you good luck in your search there. My queen still thinks I’m disagreeable on occasion. Gentleman, until tomorrow.”

Lord Aster and Lord Drake bowed to the King as he left. They walked out of the hall and went to the carriage. They got in to return to the Draconis estate.

“It wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be.” Lord Drake said.

“That comment about your sister…is he always that rude?” Lord Aster asked.

“When it comes to my family, yes he is. We were given our land by Atlantis not by King Unbane. It still irks him. He would prefer there were no magickal beings in his land. Fortunately, his Queen is sympathetic to magick beings and our needs. The Queen dabbles in magick herself.” Lord Drake informed him.

“That must be very difficult for him.” Lord aster said.

“I wouldn’t give it much thought. He is a king because Atlantis says he is. He must stay in their good humor to keep his throne.” Lord Drake said. “He knows better than to anger my father or Lady Vena.”

The carriage pulled into the drive and the courtyard was empty. Lord Aster looked over toward the stable and saw all the dragons in their cages asleep with the doors open. Lady Benna was nowhere to be seen.

CHAPTER 5

The two men went inside to the large sitting room. Near the stone hearth a woman with long dark hair stood in a blue dress. A blue veil was draped over a chair near her.

“Benna, you have transformed.” Lord Drake said.

The woman turned and smiled. “I thought I would be human while the babies are sleeping. Lord Aster, they are adorable.”

Lord Aster thought he had never seen anyone as beautiful as she. He was speechless for a moment. His throat was dry. “My Lady.”

“Did I not tell you, Ulster, that my sister was very beautiful?” Lord Drake grinned.

“No. You did not.” Lord Aster cleared his throat. “It is an honor to meet you, Lady Benna.”

“So you find me beautiful?” Lady Benna smiled mischievously.

“Who could not My Lady?” Lord Aster blushed at his shyness.

“Am I equally as beautiful as a dragon?” She smiled. She was expecting him to say that she was a more beautiful woman than dragon.

“I find you beautiful in any state, My Lady.” Lord Aster kissed the hand she had extended to him. “I am appreciative of the beauty of dragons as well as women.”

Lord Drake laughed. “I think he’s enchanted. Benna, you worked magick on him, didn’t you?”

“I have not! Just because you can’t see me as beautiful doesn’t meant that others see me as you do.” Lady Benna shot back at her brother.

“That’s not what I meant Benna. He’s blushing.” Lord Drake said.

Lord Aster was suddenly self conscious. “If I have offended you, Lady Benna, I apologize.”

“Not at all! You are refreshingly honest. I like that.” She slipped her arm though his and led him to the settee. “Don’t listen to my brother. He needs a wife to straighten him out.”

“I do not. I am far too young to settle down. I’m not even 100 yet. Mother and Father didn’t marry until they were past 200.” Lord Drake protested.

So your mother is draconian as well? Lord Aster asked.

“Yes. Mother stays in Atlantis with Father. We are one of the few pure families but I don’t believe that will be the case for long.” Lady Benna said. “I have no interest in either one of the Wyvern sons. They are both bores.”

“Father, may arrange it whether you like it or not.” Lord Drake reminded his sister.

“He wouldn’t dare. I will most likely marry a mundane or a magickal but not a draconian.” Lady Benna said.

“Pardon a mundane?” Lord Aster asked. He had never heard that term before.

“A mundane is a human that is without any magickal powers.” Lord Drake explained. “You are a mundane.”

“Drake! That’s rude.” Lady Benna admonished her brother.

“I apologize.” Lord Drake said. “I meant no offense.”

“I am not offended.” Lord Aster said.

A maid servant brought in tea and some delicacies. She began to serve them.

“How long are you staying this time, Benna?” Lord Drake asked his sister.

“Didn’t Father tell you? I have left the Sisters of Atlantis. Lady Vena believes that I have learned all I can.” Lady Benna said. “I am as skilled as she is now. It doesn’t matter. She will not recognize me as her successor because I am draconian so I have left.”

“I am sure that did not make our parents happy. Will you join the Sisters of Alban Isle?” Lord Drake asked.

“Father was quite angry but it was time for me to leave. I may go to Alban Isle, if the Lady there will allow it.” Lady Benna smiled. “I was hoping to stay with you for a while until I decide of course.”

“It will be a treat to have you here.” Lord Drake said. “Don’t you agree Ulster?”

“Yes, it will be a treat indeed.” Lord Aster smiled shyly. He was hoping the blush he was feeling wasn’t too noticeable.

There was an awkward silence in the room. It was broken by a chorus of howls from outside. The loudest sounded like Myrdren.

Benna laughed. “They are awake and they want attention. She sat her cup back on the tray.”

“I’m sorry. I will quiet them.” Lord Aster stood and Lady Benna put a hand on his arm.

Lady Benna stood and smiled at Lord Aster. “They need a woman’s touch, My Lord, especially that little Myrdren. He is just as sweet as he can be. I will attend them. I am feeling the need to transform anyway.”

“Thank you. I am in your debt, My Lady.” Lord Aster said.

“I may call in that debt someday.” Lady Benna smiled and patted Lord Aster’s arm. She left the two men.

In the morning the two men and the Lady Benna traveled by carriage to the Crystal Fortress. Lord Aster had never seen anything so beautiful in his life. The walls were literally bejeweled with crystals that he had never seen before.

“This is the most beautiful palace I have ever seen.” Lord Aster said as the stepped out of the carriage.

“Every jewel has a meaning and most of them have protective powers. It is said that each are blessed by the Sisters of Alban Isle, Atlantis and Avalon.” Lady Benna said.

“Don’t forget the Druids as well.” King Harrod said as he walked down the stairs to the visitors. “Welcome to the Crystal Fortress, Lord Aster. It is good to see you again, Lady Benna. I heard that you were in residence.”

“Really how?” Lady Benna asked.

“King Unbane told your brother to tell you to stop flying over the populace. He should know better.” King Harrod laughed. He presented his arm to the Lady Benna and she took it. Lady Benna looked over at Lord Drake questioningly.

Lord Drake just grinned.

The King led them into what was the throne room The Crystal Throne Room had inlaid stones on the walls in the pattern of multicolored dragon. Each scale was a separate stone. The floor was paved with black marble tiles and the pillars on either side of the gilded throne were made of pure clear quartz. Long strands of many colored gemstone beads hung in the alcoves making private places for secret meetings.

The sight took the breath from lord aster as he took in the inlaid dragon that took up all four walls. “King Harrod,. I see I am not the only lover of dragons.” Lord Aster said.

“I believe that without them, magick would cease to exist on this plane. Once the dragons disappear the other magickal creatures will not be far behind in disappearing from this world as well.” King Harrod said. “I like having them around me.”

“It pleases me to hear that.” Lord Aster said.

“I hope that they flourish here so that we can grow the magick of this land.” King Harrod said. “Lord Draconis has sent word to me that he will be quite interested in the sanctuary as well.”

“My father has told me as much.” Lady Benna said. “They are darlings. I have been playing with them.”

“Indeed! In which form My Lady?” The King was surprised to hear this.

“As my dragon state. They were very affectionate to me and later when I came to them as my human state they were equally as affectionate.” Lady Benna told the King.

“Have you given any thought caretakers?” King Harrod asked.

“I was speaking to Lord Aster on that subject. I suggested that he might want draconian caretakers.” Lord Drake said. “I think seeing them with my sister has proven the wisdom of it.”

“Yes. I believe that draconian caretakers will be best. They responded well to Lady Benna. I will have to speak to Lord Draconis on how to get in touch with interested applicants. I hope there will be some draconian wanting to apply.” Lord Aster said

“I intend to help as much as possible. I hope to help train the new caretakers. The dragons are quite lovely.”  Lady Benna said. She smiled at Lord Aster. “I have become quite attached to them already.”

“That sounds like an excellent plan. However, are there not few of your kind?” King Harrod asked.

“There are few pure draconian but there are many of mixed blood that can transform easily enough.” Lord Drake said. “There even may be a chance to strengthen our kind by welcoming the mixed blood draconian to Ogham-Duir. We may be able to save ourselves in the process.”

“You mean to bring them together as a community in support of Aster’s dragons?” Lady Benna asked. “Or are you proposing a colony of draconian?”

“Father and I are proposing a colony possibly in Zestra. If you will allow it that is, King Harrod.” Lord Drake said. “With a colony established, they will intermarry and strengthen our kind.” Lord Drake said. “Father has been in favor or a colony here for quite some time. I have to admit I would enjoy it as well. As it is now, Benna and I are the only draconian here on Ogham-Duir.”

“I would welcome them to my land, Lord Drake, as I do the dragons.” King Harrod said. “I believe that the area below the cliffs would be a good area to settle. I would think they would prefer to stay away from the Ren boarder.”

“I agree but it would be very close to the capital city of Una.” Lord Drake said.

“The residents will become accustom to seeing them in time. King Unbane cannot dictate the types of settlers I welcome in my Kingdom.”

“That is true.” Lord Drake said. “He will still complain.”

King Harrod laughed. “He will complain very loudly. I have no doubt in that.”

A stable boy walked in and bowed to his King. “Sire the horses are ready. My Lady, I apologize but we have no side saddles available. I hope you will not be uncomfortable with a man’s saddle.”

“It is fine I actually prefer it. The side saddle is very uncomfortable on my knees.” Lady Benna said.

“I didn’t know you even used a saddle. When we were children, you and I rode bareback most of the time.” Lord Drake teased.

Lady been blushed. “Lady Vena thought we should be proper in our travels. Not that Atlantis is that large but it can get quite painful after a while going from one side to the other using a side saddle.

The King and his guests went out to the courtyard to mount the horses. The horses were Atlantians. They were slightly smaller than the horses of Arabia and the old world.

“Lord Aster will you assist me?” Lady Benna asked.

Lord Aster looked at Lord Drake who gave him an amused smile and a nod of approval. “I would be happy to assist you, My Lady.” Lord Aster helped her into the saddle then mounted his own.

CHAPTER 6

The riders along with two guards took the seaside trail from the Crystal Fortress to the top of the cliffs. As they rode, the King pointed out spots of interest. The scenery was amazing.

When they crossed the bridge over the channel where the lake of Alban Isle flowed into the sea, the terrain changed. It became rockier. They slowed their pace as they started their ascent to the place where the sanctuary would be.

The view of Zestra from the trail was breathtaking. Lady Benna saw Lord Aster looking in wonder at the world down below.

Lady Benna smiled at Lord Aster. “It looks very much like this when I’m in flight.”

“How fortunate you are to have such a vantage point. I would love to be able to fly like you.” Lord Aster said.

“I wish I could show you but I fear I cannot. Drake would be able to lift you. He is stronger in his dragon state than I. I can ask him if he would take you up, if you like. “ Lady Benna offered.

“I will think on it, My Lady.” Lord Aster blushed. He wasn’t used to attention from beautiful women.

Lady Benna smiled when she saw his blushing face. “I didn’t mean to make you feel uncomfortable.”

“I’m not.” Lord Aster lied. “It’s just the air that’s all.”

Lady Benna smiled and nodded. “We are almost to the top.”

The trail leveled off to a large flat area that overlooked not only the kingdom of Zestra but the cove below and on to the shores of Atlantis. The riders dismounted and looked around.

Lord Aster looked at the amount of space on the top of the cliffs and found that it was adequate for a large barn and a       hatchery to be added at a later date.

“King Harrod, this will suit my needs perfectly. There is plenty of space and it is isolated enough for the dragons to be safe. There is also a natural hearth over there in that sheltered area. That is the perfect place to build.” Lord Aster said.

“I agree, Lord Aster. I will have a notice posted for workmen as soon as we return to the Palace. I will provide whatever support you need.” King Harrod said as he looked around.

“Thank you. Sire.” Lord Aster bowed to the King in gratitude. “I have plans already made up for the main building and I will also like to build a smaller building for a hatchery.”

“Lord Aster, do not forget that the caretakers will need quarters.” Lady Benna said. “A cottage perhaps?”

“I thought they would have rooms in the main building. That way they could be close when there is a problem.” Lord Aster said. “Is that not adequate?”

“Yes, I believe it will be.” Lady Benna smiled at him approvingly.

“We must leave before the light turns.” King Harrod said. “When your workers come, they will need to stay in tents until the work is complete. The slope is tricky in the afternoon light. It is full of shadows. That can cause problems for the horses. We do not want there to be any accidents.”

“I agree. Tents can go over there while the work is completed.” Lord Aster pointed to another flat place a little higher up the cliffs.

King Harrod nodded. “That will do. Let us leave before we need a tent.”

The King and the others mounted their horses. They took it slowly down the trail to the bridge at the channel. The sun was already starting to play tricks so they traveled in silence concentrating on the mounts footing.

When they crossed the bridge, Lord Aster pulled his horse up to Lord Drake. “I will need to make orders for lumber and supplies. Perhaps, you can provide some guidance in this.” Lord aster said. “I am not familiar with the businesses here yet.”

“I will get you in contact with the mill in Brimstone as well as the ironworks for nails and hearth grating and tools.” Lord Drake told him. “We will stop and make the orders on the way back to my home. Of course I will assist you in any way.”

“Thank you, Drake. There is so much I need to coordinate. I know your help will be invaluable. Lord Aster said.

“I plan on being involved as well.” Lady Benna said as she moved her horse up to the two men. “I think there will be more than enough work to share.”

“Thank you, My Lady.” Lord Aster smiled at her. Their eyes met and held for a few minutes before they shyly looked away.

Lord Drake was wondering if there was something starting between his sister and Lord Aster. He wasn’t sure but he felt it all the same. He would talk to the man later about his sister. He would make it clear that she would be joined in an arranged marriage as soon as their father decides on her husband.

In the courtyard of the Crystal Fortress, the visitors took leave of King Harrod. They got back into their carriage and started the journey home. They stopped at the mill and iron works in the Village Of Brimstone.

When they returned to the Draconis estate, they were greeted by howling hungry little dragons. Lady Benna quickly organized the feeding as well as soothing the ‘little darlings’ as she called them. The two men went inside to talk over the plans for the sanctuary.

After they had settled in with a brandy, Lord Drake took the opportunity to broach the subject of his sister to Lord Aster. “Ulster, my sister seems to be quite taken with you.”

“I hadn’t noticed.” Lord Aster lied. He had noticed but he had hoped Lord Drake had not.

“My father has already said that she will be given into an arranged marriage. So if you were hoping for some kind of romantic involvement you will be disappointed.” Lord Drake told him.

“I had no intention of pursuing such a relationship. I do admit to being fond of her but love is another matter.  I appreciate her help with the dragons and nothing more. I have responsibilities that are more important than marriage at the moment. I must establish this sanctuary before I can think of anything of a personal nature.” Lord Aster informed him.

“I wasn’t sure how you were feeling on it. I just wanted things to be clear so there would be no misunderstandings.” Lord Drake said. “I think that Benna may have other ideas. I have seen the way she is with you and it worries me.”

“I have not encouraged her.” Lord Aster said. “To do so would b a dishonor to her and your family.”

“Thank you, I know.” Lord Drake said. “Let’s get back to the plans shall we?”

“Yes. Thank you for your council, Drake.” Lord Aster smiled and looked back at his plans spread out on the table.

The next morning Lord Aster went back to the cliffs and waiting for him was at least three dozen men. He instructed them to set up a camp on the higher flat area.

A short balding man approached Lord Aster.  “Lord Aster, I’m the Royal Architect. My name is Lord Dunne. The King has sent me to help you.”

“It is an honor, My Lord.” Lord Aster said. “I fear that I am a bit out of my element. I have no idea how to handle workmen.”

Lord Dunne looked around. “I have worked with many of these men I know their skills well.”

“That will help. I was just looking at the site again. Please come with me.” Lord Aster said as he took the plans for the main building out of his saddle bag.

The two men go over and start to pace out where the building would be. They looked at the plans and pointed out where things would be

There was a shadow moving across the sky. Lord Aster looked up and saw Lady Benna in her dragon form flying over the cliffs. He smiled and waved to her.

Lady Benna sat down a few feet from where the two men were standing she lowered her head and a wall of fire came up and when it disappeared, she was human again.

Lord Dunne looked at Lady Benna with awe. He turned to Lord Aster. “I had never seen one of them transform before. That was amazing.”

Lord Aster nodded at Lord Dunne. He looked up at the workmen and they were not paying attention to the appearance of Lady Benna. He was glad that they had not been frightened. He went to greet Lady Benna. “How are you this morning, My Lady?”

“I am well. I have just left the little darlings and they are all fed and playing. I just wanted to fly over and see how things were coming.” She looked around. “I see the workers are here but not the supplies?”

“They will be here shortly. Thank you for the care of my dragons. It means a great deal to me.” Lord Aster admitted.

“They mean a great deal to me, Lord Aster. They are my kin.” Lady Benna told him.

“Yes. That is what your father said when I met him on Atlantis.”

The jingle of a horse harness made them look to the trail. The first cart was hauling the lumber and a second had casks of nails and tools. Lord Aster waved the workers over to unload the carts. Several of the men came over and began unloading the lumber and nails.

“I will organize the workers, My Lord, so that we may begin as soon as possible.” Lord Dunne said from behind Lord Aster.

Lord Aster turned. “Thank you. Have you been introduced to Lady Benna Draconis, Lord Dunne?”

“Yes. I have made the Lady’s acquaintance but it was a year or so ago. I was helping with the new hospital on Atlantis.” Lord Dunne said.

“I remember. I attended the opening with my parents.” Lady Benna said. “It is nice to see you again.” She offered her hand and Lord Dunne gave it a quick kiss.

“If you will excuse me I will get things going.” Lord Dunne left them to supervise the workers.

Lord Aster looked out over the sea to Atlantis. He couldn’t believe he was about to realize his all dreams. It was overwhelming.

“It just became real for you didn’t it?” Lady Benna asked. “I could see it in your face.”

“Yes it did. Thanks to your family and King Harrod my dragons will have a safe home. I will have accomplished what I have strived to do after so much sacrifice and time.” Lord Aster looked at Lady Benna and saw her looking out to Atlantis too. “Are you missing your parents?”

“I am a bit. The flight is short so I can return anytime to Atlantis.” Lady Benna admitted. “I must get back to the estate. Drake will be looking for me soon and so will the little darlings. I will see you at dinner?”

“Yes. I will be there.” Lord Aster said. “Thank you again for all the help you have given me.”

“It has been my pleasure, Lord Aster.” Lady Benna said.

The way she said such a simple thing made him wonder if Lady Benna was flirting with him. Lord Drake may be right after all. He smiled as he watched her hold her palms down and the wall of fire come up and leave. She stood in her dragon state and nodded to him before taking flight for the Draconis estate. He returned his attention to the work at hand.

CHAPTER 7

For the next two weeks, the workman built the sanctuary. Lord Aster would arrive early in the day and would leave as late as he dared. Every day Lady Benna flew to the site with a basket of lunch.

They would sit near the edge of the cliffs overlooking the sea and Atlantis.

“My Lady, you know that it is not necessary to bring me a meal every day. I can share in the workman’s meal.” Lord Aster told her.

“I want to and I need to stretch my wings a little every day. I fear my need to transform is being prolonged by my constant shifting back and forth. Usually after a few weeks as a dragon and I’m ready to be a human again but I’m finding it not to be the case this time.” Lady Benna said.

“I’m sorry. I know you are shifting for my benefit.” Lord Aster said.

“How else will I get to know you?” Lady Benna laughed. “You intrigue me, Lord Aster. You are always so formal and proper. I was hoping that if we spent some time together you would relax a bit. Maybe even court me?”

“I … I don’t know what to say. Your brother said …” Lord Aster looked bewildered.

“What did he say?” Lady Benna looked annoyed.

“He said there was to be an arranged marriage in your future.” Lord Aster told her reluctantly.

“Oh did he?” Lady Benna said. “I suppose he told you that to keep you from pursuing me?”

“I have no idea what his intent was.” Lord Aster said honestly.

“Well, I do. I shall give him a good piece of my mind on the subject when I get back to the estate. He has no right to even say anything to you about me.” Lady Benna was upset.

“Is it true?” Lord Aster asked.

“Is what true?” Lady Benna was confused.

“That you are going to have an arranged marriage.” Lord Aster clarified.

“There aren’t very many families that would find an advantage to marry a draconian.” Lady Benna said sharply.

“You could marry another draconian or a half draconian.” Lord Aster countered.

Lady Benna laughed. “I will marry who ever and whatever I want. I have no need to marry another draconian and there is only one other fire element family we are not related to. They are completely boring. If I marry another element I run the risk of having a chaotic child that is not an elemental. That is not fair to the child or anyone else to be honest.”

“I didn’t know there was that much of a problem for different elements to marry and procreate.” Lord Aster said as he blushed.

Lady Benna laughed. “Procreate? I though you knew since you brought a mating pair of each.”

“I just did that for balance.” Lord Aster said. “It is all so new to me. I had no idea of anything along those lines. I was just bringing them here to keep them safe. If they mated then that would be an added benefit.”

“I see.” Lady Benna smiled. “I need to let you get back to work and I need to be back before the little darlings wake up from their morning nap. I had the cages put behind the barn. They are growing too large to fit in them properly.”

“As long as they are not getting into mischief it will be fine. Lord Aster said as he watched her clear up the lunch. “They will need the cages to be transported up here.”

“That is true. I hope the structure will be finished soon or else new cages will be needed.” Lady Benna said. “They are growing constantly.”

Lord Aster thought for a moment. “I wonder when they will start flying.”

“Don’t ask for trouble, Lord Aster. They will start when they should. I didn’t fly until I was at least 10 years of age.” Lady Benna told him. “They may have to be as that or older before they fly. If they seem inclined I will help teach them.”

“Thank you again for all your help.” Lord Aster said sincerely.

“It’s nothing.” Lady Benna closed the basket and stood. “I will see you for supper.”

“Yes.” He watched as she transformed and flew away carrying the basket in her claws. He went back to work with a sigh.

When Lady Benna arrived home she was surprised to find her father sitting with her brother talking. They appear to have been in conversation for a while before she arrived.

“Father! What are you doing here?” Lady Benna rushed to greet him.

Lord Retalon stood and hugged his daughter. “I am here to see the progress of the sanctuary. Drake tells me that you have been visiting with Lord Aster every day at the work site.”

“I bring him a meal. My brother has been very chatty of late.” Lady Benna gave her brother a glare then turned to her father. “Father, what is this about an arranged marriage that Drake has told Lord Aster about?

“I have no idea.” Lord Retalon looked at his son questioningly. “You and your mother insisted that I let you choose your own husband. I can only hope that he is draconian but I know that you are looking to others.”

“But I thought…” Lord Drake started.

“So if I choose a mundane you will not be upset.” Lady Benna asked.

“As I said, I have no say in the matter.” Lord Retalon sat down and patted the settee for Lady Benna to sit with him.  “Lord Aster?”

“Maybe . I had to set him straight on my availability today. Thanks to you, dear brother, He didn’t think he had a chance at all.” Lady Benna glared at her brother again.

“He is a mundane. You will outlive him. Is that what you want to be someone’s widow?” Lord Drake said seriously.

“It is a small price to pay for happiness. I enjoy his company.” Lady Benna admitted. “Is that why you are here father to see if I was getting along with Lord Aster?

“No, but I have come to inform Lord Aster that there are two applicants for the caretaker positions. Lady Estella Wyvern and Lady Tsing Na have both expressed interest.

“I knew Estella would but I don’t remember Lady Tsing Na.” lady Benna said.

“She is from Lemuria and of the water element.” Lord Retalon said.

“That is perfect. We will have water, fire and air. All we need is an earth caretaker. “  Lady Benna said.

“We?” Lord Drake looked at their father. “Are you including yourself as the fire element?”

“Yes, I have been caring for them since I arrived. Father, you must see them they are little darlings.” Lady Benna smiled.

“I will check them later. As far as an earth draconian there is only one family I know that is still pure blooded. That is the Terras family. They live in the Old World. I haven’t heard anything in years from them. There may not be any left. I will send a missive tomorrow to where I believe they are to extend the invitation to be a caretaker to one of their daughters.” Lord Retalon said.

“That would be lovely.” Lady Benna said. “I’m sure Lord Aster will be as excited as I am about it all.”

Just before supper, Lord Aster returned to the Draconis estate. He dismounted his horse and led it to the stables. On the way he passed the barn that the dragons are being kept. There was the sound of a woman singing in a language he had never heard before. He listened for a minute before taking the horse to be settled for the night.  When he passed the barn again he didn’t hear the singing anymore.

Lord Aster entered the house and walked into the large sitting room. He immediately saw Lord Retalon sitting with Lady Benna. “My Lord, this is an unexpected pleasure. I wasn’t expecting to see you until the sanctuary building was completed.”

“I thought I would bring you news, Lord Aster.” Lord Retalon smiled at the young man. “There are two draconian that wish to be caretakers for your dragons. Lady Estella Wyvern and Lady Tsing Na have answered the invitation. I am sending invitation to the Terras family as well on Benna’s insistence. She feels that there should be a representative of each element.”

“I agree with Lady Benna.” Lord Aster said. “It will help their growth and teach them valuable skills to have someone who knows them by experience.”

“I hope there will be a response then. The Terras family has been quiet for some time. I don’t even know if there are daughters to fill the role.” Lord Retalon told him.

“I see. We should all hope for the best.” Lord Aster nodded. “Tell me have the ladies already arrived? I heard singing in the barn when I passed.”

“That was me. I was singing a lullaby in dragon tongue.” Lady Benna blushed. “It was one mother sang to us often. I hadn’t sung it in years. Lady Vena did not think it was appropriate for the mundane children to hear. Myrdren was a bit fussy so I sang it for them. I hope you don’t mind.”

“No. Thank you. It was beautiful, at least the part that I heard. You must sing the whole thing for me sometime.” Lord Aster blushed when he saw the knowing smile on Lord Retalon’s face.

Lord Retalon was pleased. He could see what Drake had seen. They were falling in love. He was sure that they didn’t even realize it, at least not yet.

The maid came in to call them to supper. Lord Retalon stood with his daughter and then said. “Lord Aster could you take Benna into the dining room I forgot to check something before supper. “

“That was not at all subtle, Father.” Lady Benna said as she took Lord Aster’s offered arm.

“Indeed! I thought it was. I can see that I need your mother for these things.” Lord Retalon chuckled. “Lord Aster, I would like to speak to you in private later.”

“Yes my lord. May I ask what it is about?” Lord Aster suddenly felt uncomfortable.

“My daughter.” Lord Retalon said bluntly.

“My Lord?” Lord Aster was confused and a little intimidated.

“Don’t worry, Lord Aster. I think you will be pleased with our conversation.” Lord Retalon chuckled at the young man’s obvious discomfort.

Lord Aster looked at Lady Benna who just smiled back at him. He wondered what her father wanted to talk about but he had an idea it was about his intentions and marriage.

CHAPTER 8

Dinner had been quiet. Everyone was preoccupied with their own thoughts. Lord Aster was a little afraid of what the conversation was going to be like later between he and Lord Retalon.

After dinner, Lord Aster walked to the private sitting room that was a part of Lord Retalon chambers. He was dreading this talk. He was sure that Lord Retalon, like his son, was going to discourage him from courting Lady Benna.

It didn’t matter that the Lady had other ideas about things. Lord Aster was sure that she was expecting him to propose to her. He was glad that she was sure about how he felt. He wasn’t sure at all.

Lord Aster knocked softly on the door to the sitting room.

“Come in.” Lord Retalon called out.

“My Lord.” Lord Aster walked in and bowed.

Lord Aster, I was hoping to speak to you about my daughter. Lord Retalon said. “She is quite fond of you.”

“You said that, My Lord. I have not been encouraging her in any way.” Lord aster said. “Lord Drake said she was to have an arranged marriage and I did not wish to interfere in that arrangement.”

“What I wish for my daughter and what really will transpire are two different things, I fear. My daughter has a mind of her own. I had wished to plan a marriage for her but I was informed by her mother that it was not in my best interest. Her mother told me that the young man I was hoping to marry Benna to was  …” Lord Retalon hesitated. “An imbecile.”

Lord Aster looked at Lord Retalon a little surprised. “My Lord, I’m sure he is mentally adequate. There must be another reason for your wife to say something like that.”

“He is not interested in Benna. Let’s just leave it at that. She has expressed affection for you, Lord Aster.” Lord Retalon smiled. “I see she has found a purpose working with your dragons.”

“They are quite fond of her. The first time they saw her she was in her dragon state. I have to admit the first time I saw her she was in her dragon state. I am amazed at the draconian, My Lord. You are quite beautiful dragons.” Lord Aster said humbly.

Lord Retalon laughed.”Well not all of us. I have to admit I’m a bit scared and worse for wear. There was a time when we were at odds with mundanes. There were battles. I have many scars from that time.”

“I had no idea.” Lord Aster said.

“I would suppose that is the reason your dragons are hunted down now. In a way, the draconian are responsible for their fate.” Lord Retalon said sadly.

Lord Aster looked at the older man curiously. He wondered how old Lord Retalon was.

“I am very old.” Lord Aster said as if he were reading the younger man’s mind. “As far as my daughter is concerned you have my blessing to court her. I expect you to be a proper gentleman.”

“Yes, of course My Lord.” Lord Aster said. “I’m sure Lady Benna will be quite pleased.”

“Are you pleased?” Lord Retalon said sharply.

“I have to admit that I am. I hoped to find someone I could share my work with. Lady Benna seems to be as enthusiastic about the dragon sanctuary as I am.”

“I can see that she is. I hear that is going well.” Lord Retalon relaxed as the subject changed.

“We will be finished in two or three more weeks. When are the Ladies coming to be caretakers?”

“Lady Estella should be here in a few days. Lady Tsing Na will need at least a week to get here. I will send a message to the Terras family in the morning.”

“Thank you again, My Lord. I will take my leave. I’m sure it was a long journey from Atlantis and no doubt you are tired.”

“I flew over. I don’t usually but I thought I would see what Benna enjoys about it. The view is spectacular in the early morning sun.” Lord Retalon smiled. “Good night, Lord Aster. I will see you in the morning.”

“Yes My Lord. Good night.” Lord Aster left the older man and started to walk to his room. He walked down the corridor with windows facing the barn and saw flames. He started to run.

When Lord Aster got outside Lord Drake was already out in the courtyard shouting to the stable boys.

Lady Benna came out right after Lord Aster. “Did you get them out?” she said frantically.

“Not all of them.” Lord Drake said as he pointed underneath a tree on the far side of the courtyard. “There are four missing.”

“Which ones are missing?” Lord Aster couldn’t see them all.

Lady Benna looked around and checked to see which dragons were missing. “Lord Aster, it’s both the chaos dragons, Argone and Myra.”

There was a howl from inside.

“We have to get them out. Help me with the door.” Lord Aster said to Lord Drake.

Both men pushed on the door but couldn’t budge it. The howling was more frantic now. The flames had increased and the building would not stand much longer.

“That’s Myra!” Lady Benna said tearfully.

Before anyone could stop him Myrdren came running and banged head first into the bottom of the door breaking one of the boards, he turned around and ran at the same spot again breaking through the second time.

Myrdren started to go in but Lord Aster grabbed him and held on to him. “Myrdren, you can’t. The roof is about to fall in.”

Myrdren started to howl in response to the howling inside.

A minute later Myra comes running out of the burning barn through the hole in the door with Argone behind her just as the roof fell in. both ran to lady Benna. Lord Aster let go of Myrdren and he ran to Lady Benna as well.

“That’s two.” Lady Benna said as she snuggled the dragons. “Where are the two chaos ones?”

Lord Aster looked at what was left of the burning building and fell to his knees. He thought they must be trapped inside.

Lord Retalon walked up behind them. “Is someone looking for these two?” He had Nort and Brida under each arm. “They were hiding inside the carriage.”

Lord Aster looked at the two very guilty looking dragons and then back at the burning barn. He stood up. “I have a feeling they have something to do with this.”

Lady Benna looked at them and said something sharply to them in the dragon tongue. They started to cry.

“What did she say?” Lord Aster asked Lord Drake.

“She told them that she was angry with them because they almost hurt the others very badly. It seems my sister has become a surrogate mother to them.” Lord Drake said.

“It would seem so. I will replace your barn. Most likely it was Nort. he likes to knock over things. He must have knocked over a lantern. They should have been asleep but he and Brida must have been playing. They never seem to be doing what they should.”

“I lost no horses or other livestock and the barn can be easily replaced. I should know. I have burned a barn down myself.” Lord Drake chuckled. “I was just learning to control my fire and it got out of hand.”

“I will stay with them tonight. We should be taking them up to the cliffs soon.” Lord Aster said.

“Are you going to stay up there with them?” Lord Retalon asked.

“Yes but just until the caretakers get here.” Lord Aster said. ”I hope to settle somewhere near the sanctuary after it is finished.” He knew Lord Draconis was wondering about the conversation earlier

“I will put them in the other barn and make sure they are asleep this time.” Lady Benna said as she walked past with all the dragons following her.

“I will stay with them Lady Benna.” Lord Aster said.

“We both will. They are still shaken up. Myrdren broke one of his horns on the door it will have to be looked after. Drake, can you bring my healing bag from my room?”

“Sure. He will need to get it sanded. I’ll bring a sanding stone as well.” Lord Drake said as he walked off.

Lord Retalon nodded to Lord Aster and followed his son inside.

Lady Benna looked at Lord Aster. “What was that look with my father? What did you talk about?”

“He gave me his blessing to court you.” Lord Aster said shyly.

“You don’t need his blessing. You need mine.” Lady Benna walked off.

Lord Aster sighed. This was turning out to be a very disturbing night. He followed Lady Benna to the other barn farther off of the courtyard.

“Do I have it?” Lord Aster asked

“Do you have what?” Lady Benna said as she started to settle the dragons.

“Do I have your blessing?” He tried again.

“What do you think?” Lady Benna looked at him, a bit annoyed.

“I have no idea My Lady. I have no idea what you think.” Lord Aster sighed.

“You have it.” Lady Benna smiled reluctantly. She started to look over the dragons. “We need to check them all for burns. I believe the fire dragons will be fine but the water and air I’m not so sure. We must keep a close eye on Argone and Myra they inhaled smoke and there could be side effects.”

Lady Benna sat on the straw and several of the dragons came to sit around her. “Myrdren and Myra climbed up on her lap.”

Lord Aster sat in the straw beside Lady Benna. Argone went over to Lord Aster and he stroked the little fire dragon. She was still shaking from fear.

“What about Myrdren’s horn? How will that be repaired? Lord Aster asked.

“He will have to have the broken end sanded down and a salve put on to keep it from getting infected. Horns are very delicate and an infection in one can be fatal if not caught in time.” Lady Benna cuddled Myrdren.

“Will it grow back?” Lord Aster asked.

“Never. He will have a reminder of his heroism for the rest of his life.“ Lady Benna smiled at the little dragon.

Myra gave Myrdren a lick on the face. Myrdren licked her back.

Lord Drake came in with the healing bag and the sanding stone. He sat in the straw with his sister and Lord Aster. “Come here little hero and let me fix you up.”

Myrdren looked at Lady Benna who nodded. He climbed off her lap and went to Lord Drake. He sat in front of Lord Drake and looked at the curious stone in the man’s hand.

“It won’t hurt Myrdren.” Lady Benna said. “Be very still.”

Lord Drake started to sand off the sharp edge where the horn had broken. Myrdren sat very still even though it was uncomfortable to have a horn sanded. When he was done Lady Benna put the salve on it to seal the exposed inside core.

The other dragons had snuggled in the straw and had gone to sleep. Argone was on Lord Asters lap and Myra was still on Lady Benna’s lap. Myrdren looked up with big eyes at Lady Benna. She waved him back up on her lap where he snuggled with Myra and fell asleep.

Lord Drake stood up and started to leave. “I trust the dragons will be your chaperones so that I can get to sleep.”

Lord Aster smiled. He looked at Argone on his lap and the earth dragons on Lady Benna’s lap. “I believe they will be. Good night Drake.”

“Good night Drake.” Lady Benna said.

Lord Drake nodded and left them to watch over the dragons.

CHAPTER 9

In the days that followed, the other two Ladies came and the dragons had attached to them. Myrdren still stayed close to Lady Benna. Lady Benna expected it because he was the youngest.

The day after Lady Estella arrived, Lord Aster remarked that the dragons liked the Ladies better than he.

Lady Benna laughed. “It’s because they are with their mothers more than their fathers in the wild. It’s just like mundane children in a way.”

“They are certainly as unruly are mundane children.” Lady Estella said. “But they are precious just the same.”

“I would like for you ladies to be called ‘Matron’.” Lord Aster said. “It’s very close to ‘Mother’. That is what you are to them.”

“That would be an honor, Lord Aster. Lady Estella said. “We will be taking care of their every need until they are old enough to care for themselves just like a mother would do for her children.”

“They need a gentle hand to nurture them. We want them to be well behaved and calm.” Lady Benna said. “The last thing we need is the dragons to become aggressive.”

“I will forever be grateful to you ladies for the love and care you give them.” Lord Aster said.

Lady Benna reached out and touched Lord Aster’s arm. “I am honored to care for my kin. It is the greatest honor any draconian can ever have.”

Lord Aster took her hand and kissed it. “Well then I am glad for my fondness of dragons. Some more than others.”:

Lady Estella cleared her throat and looked embarrassed.

“Come Estella. We need to get them to bed.” Lady Benna smiled at Lord Aster as she left.

They didn’t have to wait long for the sanctuary to be finished. In less than three weeks the sanctuary’s main building was completed. The workman had cleared out and everything was ready to move the dragons to the sanctuary.

Lord Aster and Lady Benna as well as Lady Estella Wyvern and Lady Tsing Na decided to bring the dragons to the cliffs and settle them in. It was early in the morning when they started. They started out with the dragons in two carts in the cages that they had come to Ogham-Duir. The journey was long and by the time the dragons arrived at their new home it was well in the evening. The ladies settled them in for the night and made a plan for their care.

Lady Benna, Lady Estella and Lady Tsing Na had decided that they would take shifts to care for the dragons. They split the day into thirds. Lady Tsing Na took the morning shift and taught the little dragons to meditate and exercise. Lady Estella took the afternoon shift for playtime. Lady Benna was on the bedtime shift so she could sing to her ‘little darlings’.

On their first full day, most of the dragons enjoyed the freedom of being able to run and play. They were still watched closely by the caretakers. They were allowed to explore. Lord Aster took note that there should be some kind of barrier to keep them from the edge of the cliffs.

Everything had been good news so far until lord Retalon received word for the Old World. The bad news that came was expected in a way. Lord Retalon came while the dragons were at their naptime. Lord Aster and the Ladies stood in the small entry of the sanctuary building as Lord Retalon told them the news.

“I have received word from the Old World. The Terras family is no more. They were lost in an epidemic of fever ten years ago.” Lord Retalon told them.

“Are they sure they are all gone?” Lady Benna asked.

“Yes. The courier went to the village and found the records and the graves. I fear their fate will be ours someday. There are less and less of us all the time.” Lord Retalon was obviously upset.

“We knew it was a possibility.” Lord Aster said. “It is a great loss none the less. Were they the only family with the earth trait?”

“They were the only family I knew of. I do believe there are some with the trait that are not full draconian.” Lord Retalon said.

“Would any on those be willing to come?” Lady Tsing Na asked.

“That isn’t the problem. They have to be able to transform quickly and without difficulty.” Lady Benna said. “There are some draconian that cannot transform. The babies will need to see their kin in dragon form.”

“Myrdren and Myra are attached to you, Lady Benna and you are not of their element.” Lady Tsing Na said. “Maybe they can serve as assistants to cook and clean for us.”

“Tsing Na, we need to do that for ourselves.” Lady Benna said.

“I wasn’t trained as you were I spent most of my time being waited on not serving.” Lady Tsing Na told them.

“Neither was I but I’m willing to learn.” Lady Estella said. “It will take some time for us to adjust but I do believe this is a calling. We are doing a service to our kin, Tsing Na.”

“I suppose but I will need help with all these tasks.” Lady Tsing Na said.

“We will help you.” Lady Benna said. “When I was in training with the Sisters of Atlantis I learned all these skills and I will be willing to teach you.”

The other two ladies smiled and nodded to Lady Benna.

“We need to get busy. They will be awake soon. Thank you for coming, Father, to tell us.” Lady Benna said.

“I am very invested in the success of the sanctuary as you all know. I will take my leave before your charges wake. Walk with me Lord Aster.” Lord Retalon headed for the door.

“Yes My Lord.” Lord Aster looked at Lady Benna and then followed her father outside.

“Have you asked her yet?” Lord Retalon looked at him.

“Asked her?” Lord Aster was confused.

Lord Retalon laughed. “Maybe I should ask if she has asked you?”

“Oh that!” Lord aster blushed. “I haven’t asked her yet but I will after the dedication ceremony. King Harrod has insisted we have one.”

“He just wants to have an opportunity to show the other leaders of Ogham-Duir up.” Lord Retalon laughed. “You of course will invite the High Council of Atlantis.

“I already have them on the list, My Lord. As well as some of the more important families on Atlantis. Lady Benna was helping me with the list.”

“Good! I must return to Atlantis now. Tell Drake I will be back before the dedication.” Lord Retalon stepped into the open and held his hands palm down as the wall of fire transformed him into a dragon. He was more gold than his children and there were several noticeable scars along his body. He flew out over the cliff to Atlantis.

Lady Benna came out as Lord Aster watched her father fly. “What did he want?”

“He wanted to know about the dedication ceremony. He wanted to make sure that the High Council was invited.” Lord Aster said.

“Is that all he wanted?” Lady Benna gave him a pointed look.

Lord aster laughed. “I have no idea what you are asking.”

“My father approves of you that means he is impatient for you to propose.” Lady Benna said.

Lord Aster laughed. “The ‘little darlings’ will be awake any moment Benna.”

“Fine! Don’t tell me.” Lady Benna turned and went back inside.

Lord Aster laughed.

Invitations for the dedication ceremony were sent to the leaders of all five Realms of Ogham-Duir and the High Council of Atlantis.

All of the leaders graciously accepted the invitation to attend. Invitations were also sent to other families on Atlantis as well. Many accepted but a few did not.

On the day of the reception, there were tables filled with food and wine and ale. King Harrod was on hand to welcome the guest as they celebrated the dragon sanctuary officially opening on Ogham-Duir. Everyone was given a tour of the sanctuary and introduced to the dragons.

The dragons moved around among the people freely. Some of the dragons were very timid to be around so many people. They stayed close to the Matrons. Myrdren didn’t leave Lady Benna’s side the entire time.

There were some guests that were afraid of the dragons. Queen Deirdre of the Tuathe was especially wary of them. Others such as King Kristen of Cullen patted them on the head and gave them bits of fruit.

Lord Aster laughed as Myrdren trailed after Lady Benna nearly stepping on her skirts.  “He’s not going to leave you is he?”

Lady Benna turned around and waved Myrdren to her. She gave the little dragon a piece of apple. “I don’t believe he will ever leave me. He is being very shy today. I don’t blame him really. There is much going on. I hear that King Harrod wants to make a speech to dedicate the sanctuary.”

“Yes he does. The tours are almost over so it will be any minute.” Lord Aster said. “I wonder how long it will be.”

“Very long most likely. He is a king. They are all long winded.” Lady Benna laughed.

“Gather ‘round! Gather ‘round!” King Harrod called out.

“Leaders of Ogham-Duir, High Council of Atlantis and dear friends welcome to the Dragon Sanctuary of Aster Cliffs.” King Harrod started.

Lord Aster and Lady Benna look at each other and smile.

“In these times of uncertainty, we gain solace in the knowledge that their magick will be preserved. Here the magick of these noble beasts will flourish as will their numbers.

“I am honored that Lord Ulster Aster had brought these creatures to my land. This kingdom is happy to include all creatures, mundane and magickal in a welcoming embrace as do all of the realms of this Ogham-Duir. So on this day we welcome Lord Ulster Aster and his dragons to the lands of Ogham-Duir.

“So let us raise our glass and toast to the Dragon Sanctuary Of Aster Cliffs, Lord Aster, the Matrons and the dragons. All hail!”

“All hail!” Everyone said together.

“That wasn’t that bad.” Lord Aster whispered to Lady Benna.

“I think Father told him to keep it short.” Lady Benna said as she looked over at her father and the King.

“I should thank your father for that.” Lord aster laughed.

Lady Benna nodded and smiled as she moved off with Myrdren trailing her shirts.

The party continued into the late day. It was nearly dark when the last of the guests left. Lady Benna rounded up the dragons and got them settled in to bed. Lord Aster stayed to help with the clearing up of the party remains.

Lord Aster was putting some scraps into the large waste barrel when he stopped to listen to Lady Benna sing to the dragons.

Lady Estella came up beside him. “I don’t know what you are waiting for.”

“Pardon My Lady?” Lord Aster looked startled.

“Ask her already. I see how you look at her. Everyone does. It does not matter that you are mundane if you truly love her.” Lady Estella said.

“I may just do that, My Lady.” Lord aster said with a smile.

“If you do not my older brother, Willas, is looking for a mate.” Lady Estella said. Lord Retalon would jump at a chance to join draconian dynasties.

“I get your meaning, My Lady. Lord aster said.

“See that you do. My brother Willas is a bore.” Lady Estella said.

Lord aster laughed. “Then I have no competition.”

Lady Estella shook her head and laughed as she went back to pick up more of the party mess.

Lord Aster stood there for a few more minutes and waited as the singing stopped and the lights went lower. He went to the door and looked in. “Can I speak with you?

Lady Benna nodded and went to the door to speak to him. “They are asleep but I shouldn’t go very far. Myrdren sometimes wakes up.”

“You spoil him you know.” Lord Aster offered her his arm and Lady Benna took it with a smile.

“Yes but he is so young. What is it that you wanted to speak with me about?” Her curiosity was peaked.

“I need to ask you a question of great importance.” Lord Aster said as he led her away from the door.

“What is that, My Lord?” Lady Benna asked coyly.

“Benna, I think we know each other well enough to drop the formality.” Lord Aster turned to her.

“You are right. We are raising ten little darlings together aren’t we?” Lady Benna smiled.

Lord Aster nodded. “Benna want to marry you. Will you marry me?”

“Yes Ulster. I will but we must do it here. We must have the dragons at the ceremony.” Lady Benna said smiling.

“Here on the cliff.” Lord aster said smiling. “It’s a perfect place.”

“Yes. Here looking out to sea.” Lady Benna looked out at the horizon.

“Your father has been waiting for me to do this you know. He is very impatient.” Lord aster said.

The other Matrons thought we were already engaged.” Lady Benna told him. “They were surprised that we were not.”

“That explains Lady Estella warning to me.” Lord Aster laughed. “She told me her brother Willas is boring.”

“He is.” Lady Benna laughed.

“When shall we marry?” Lord Aster asked.

“Give me three months, please, to get it all together and then we shall be husband and wife.” Lady Benna smiled up at him with her eyes full of love.

“Three months it is.” Lord Aster said. “I hope your father can wait that long.”

They looked at each other and laughed.

Chapter 10

CHAPTER 10

Lord Aster had a house built at the bottom of the cliffs and soon other draconian came to build there as well and a village started to grow. The new village was given the name Astoria by King Harrod. There was a dedication ceremony, of course, at which King Harrod welcomed the draconian people. His speech was much longer than it was at the dragon sanctuary dedication. It seemed to go on forever.

The three months passed slowly as Lord Aster and Lady Benna waited to be married. The weather on the day of the wedding cooperated. The sky was blue and the day was warm. It was a perfect day for a wedding.

As they had planned Lord Aster and Lady Benna’s wedding was held on the cliffs of the dragon sanctuary. The dragons were what brought them together so they thought it only fitting that the dragons be there when they married.

An iron scrollwork arch had been placed near the edge of the cliff. It looked out to the sea that Lord Aster had traveled from to bring the dragons to Ogham-Duir. It was on the very spot where Lord Aster proposed to Lady Benna. It had been surrounded by flowers for the wedding.

For the wedding party, banquet tables and smaller tables with chairs were set out on the higher part of the cliffs overlooking the sea. There were white cloths and silver bowls of fruit on all the smaller tables. There was also a low table full of fruit and vegetables for the dragons. There were baskets of flowers everywhere. It was all quite lovely.

The guests stood as they gathered around to witness the wedding. They were all faced out to sea. Among the guests of Lord Aster and Lady Benna were friends and family

The dragons were honored guests. They sat in a semicircle in front. They were extremely well behaved and paying attention to what was going on. The female dragons wore pink ribbon bows for the special occasion.

Lady Vena was there by request of the bride. She had come from Atlantis to preside over the ceremony. She was there as a favor to Lord Retalon because she believed that a magical creature had no business marrying a mundane. Lord Retalon reminded her that it was the least she could do after forcing Lady Benna from the Sisters of Avalon.

Some of the Sisters of Atlantis were in attendance as well. They had come with Lady Vena. They had been friends with Lady Benna when she was part of the order. Their blue robes flapped in the light winds.

The bride wore a flowing white gown and brightly colored flowers in her hair. The groom wore a rich robe of royal blue silk as was the custom for a groom on Atlantis. Lord Retalon had given it to him as a gift to honor lady Benna.

Lady Estelle and Lady Tsing Na were the bride’s attendants. They wore pink dresses and each had a white flower in their hair.

Lord Drake had agreed to be witness and serve as the groomsman. He was the only person that Lord Aster knew well on Ogham-Duir.

Lord Retalon walked Lady Benna up a trail of flower petals that the dragons had helped to spread earlier that morning which was a treat for Nort and Brida.

Lady Vena started. “Who gives this bride?”

“I do.” Lord Retalon said. He went back to stand with his wife, Lady Anna.

“Join hands please. Do you, Lord Ulster Aster, promise to keep this woman well and love her much?” Lady Vena asked the groom.

“I do.” Lord Aster smiled at his bride.

“Do you, Lady Benna Draconis, promise to keep this man well and love him much?” Lady Vena asked the bride.

“I do.” Lady Benna said as she smiled at her groom.

Lady Vena took a blue silk cord and tied their hands together and put her hands over theirs. “I bind you together in love. Be strong and true.” Lady vena smiled at them and took her hands away. “You may kiss to seal your promise.”

Lord aster and Lady Benna kissed and the guests started to applaud. They stood there just gazing into each other’s eyes. They really didn’t even hear the guests or see anyone but each other.

Myrdren looked around at everyone and decided he would show his appreciation as well. He let out a howl that gave the newly married couple a start. The other dragons didn’t want to be left out so they started to howl as well.

Lord Aster and Lady Benna started laughing and bent down and started to pet the dragons trying to calm them down. None of them quieted despite their attempt.

“I don’t think they want to be still.” Lord Aster said laughing.

“They aren’t upset. They are happy for us.” Lady Benna laughed as they continued to howl. She said something in dragon tongue and they quieted down.

“What did you say?” Lord Aster asked his bride.

“I told them if they were quiet, I would let them have cake.” Lady Benna laughed.

“Cake?” Lord Aster was surprised. He didn’t even think they liked sweets.

“Yes. They should have something for bringing us together.” Lady Benna said. “I don’t even know if they will eat it but there is plenty.”

Lord Aster nodded. “Then they shall have cake. Come let’s have a seat.” Lord Aster led her over to a table in the center of the space.  He guided her into a chair and sat beside her.

Trays of glasses of wine and ale were being passed as the guests settled in the chairs around the smaller tables that circled the banquet table.

Lady Benna looked up just in time to catch a little head with a broken horn snatch an apple slice off their table. She laughed. “Myrdren! I saw you.”

Lord Aster looked over and saw Myrdren lift his head with apple slice in his mouth. He laughed at the dragon’s guilty look. He was surprised when a second head popped up. “Myra! I should have known you would be there too.” Lord Aster handed her an apple slice and both of the dragons went off to eat their treasure.

The meal was over soon and the cake was cut. All the guests were given a piece and then the dragons. All of the dragons seemed to like it. They wore more of it than they ate as they got icing and crumbs all over themselves.

“I will have to clean them up before the go to sleep.” Lady Estella said to Lady Benna as they watched the dragons eating. “That is if I can get them to sleep after all the excitement.”

“They will be exhausted I’m sure. I had no trouble getting them to sleep after the dedication ceremony.” Lady Benna said.

“Well they didn’t have cake at the dedication ceremony.” Lady Estella said.

“They can barely keep their eyes open. Look at Nort and Brida. They are almost asleep now. I think Myrdren is asleep.” Lady Benna laughed as Myrdren startled awake just as his head was about to fall in his plate of cake.

“I had better get them inside right now then. Good night Lady Aster.” Lady Estella laughed and smiled at her.

“I like the sound of that.” Lord Aster said as he came up behind his new wife. “Are you ready to go to our new home.”

“I hate to leave them.” Lady Benna looked at them wistfully.

“We are right at the bottom of the cliffs. We can be here in a few minutes if there is trouble.” Lord Aster reminded her. “Are you ready?”

“Yes.” Lady Benna looked back at the dragons that were now following Lady Estella before following her new husband.

Lord Aster sighed and took her hand leading her to the carriage. He and Lady Benna waved good bye as they got in the carriage. They traveled down the trail to their new home.

Several other carriages followed and soon only the dragons and the two Matrons were left alone at the sanctuary. It was strangely quiet after such an exciting day.

The dragons barely stayed awake as the Matrons cleaned them up and put them to sleep in clean straw. It had been a long day so they went to bed as well.

The next day workmen come and clear out the remnants of the wedding. They hauled off the trash and the tables and chairs as the dragons watch with curiosity. They take everything but the arch that overlooks the sea.

Lord and lady Aster requested that the iron scrollwork arch be left there as a part of the grounds. They wanted it there to remind the dragons that they came from far away across the sea.

The next day life went back to the normal routine. Lady Benna came everyday to the sanctuary but only stayed long enough in the evening to sing to the dragons. Once they were asleep she left them in the care of the other Matrons until the next morning.

Epilogue

Days turned into weeks months and then years. Time passed and the sanctuary stayed a safe place for the dragons. Lord and Lady Aster along with the Matrons cared for the dragons for many years.

Most of the food and supplies were donations and offerings to the magick of the dragons. There was never a lack of anything. The residents of Astoria made regular trips up to the sanctuary to bring what they could to their kin.

In time the hatchery was built and there were new dragons born. It provided a warm and safe place for the new babies to hatch. There was quite a large group of dragons living together in safety and harmony.

Lord and Lady Aster had a hatchling as well. They had a son that they named Derrick. He grew up with the hatchlings at the sanctuary. Being a carrier of the fire trait he was immediately accepted by all the dragons as kin. When he started to transform into his dragon state, they became even more attached to him.

When Lord Ulster Aster became too old to make the daily journey up to the cliffs, Lord Derrick took over the operations of the sanctuary. He had new stone and mortar buildings built to replace the older wooden ones. These buildings were larger and more easily maintained.

Even with the larger buildings the Dragon Sanctuary of Aster Cliffs grew beyond its capability. Since space was limited in the sanctuary some of the older dragons were entrusted to members of the magical community. This caused the need for a mandate to be put in place to protect the dragons that were no longer a part of the sanctuary.

The leaders of all five realms of Ogham-Duir came together and signed the Dragon Treaty of Ogham-Duir to protect the dragons. To this day, that treaty is still in effect.

The magic of the dragons lives on.
