Cedrick stood in the garden next to the door of the ballroom. He needed a moment of peace before he went back into the heat and the noise.

"Did you see Violet's new thing?" A female voice asked.

Cedrick fought the urge to move away. It wasn't everyday he could listen to the whispers about himself.

"Lord Wicksom." Another female voice answered. "He is some far flung cousin that inherited after the tragedy at Manchester. I bet she has her hands full training him up."

There was a giggle. "At least he's not some pretentious fop like the last one. That one was all hot air and fancy clothes. This Lord Wicksom fellow may hold his fork improperly but he's not a fool. Quite handsome as well."

"No, he's not a fool." There was a loud sigh. "Well, it's just like Violet to get her hands on a socially acceptable bit of rough. She has all the luck."

"Doesn't she just? I'd never put my skirts down if he were mine. Did you see the size of his hands? She'll have a bun in before you know it."

Cedrick raised an eyebrow.

"Minerva. Grace. What has you over here with your heads together?" It was Violet's voice this time.

"Prudence and that tragic dress." The first voice answered. "Don't you agree, Violet?"

"Awful color." Violet answered. "Have you seen my escort? He went out for a breath of air." She paused. "Oh, there he is! Cedrick!"

Cedrick rounded the corner. "Yes Darling? Is it my dance?"

"Yes." Violet led him to the dance floor. "I know you were listening. What were they really talking about?"

"They were speculating how soon you will be with child because I'm a socially acceptable bit of rough with large hands."

Violet giggled. "Jealous tarts."
