The mist was thick as Millah walked through the forest. The smell of decaying leaves hung in the air. There was a light breeze making the trees sway eerily in the misty moonlight.
She kept to the path. It wasn't far but she had never traveled the path in the night. She was regretting her decision not to wait for sunrise. She pulled her cloak tighter around her and kept walking.
She froze in mid stride when she heard a rustle on the edge of the path.
"Is someone there? Please. I'm just going to the cottage by the river. I mean you no harm."
A black dog came from the bushes and sat down in the middle of her path. It was the biggest dog she had ever seen.
"Nice doggy. I'm just going to be on my way now."
"He doesn't like it when people call him doggy. A strange man voice told her.
Millah turned to the voice behind her. "Please. I don't have anything of value."
"I'm not here to rob you." He told her as he walked onto the path."The cottage by the river? Are you a mundane? The wise woman in the cottage hates mundanes."
"I don't know if I'm a mundane or not. That was why I was going to the wise woman." Millah glanced back at the dog. "Why doesn't he like to be called doggy?"
"He's half hellhound. Doggy is for yappy little dust mops that sit on laps and eat from crystal bowls. Shall we walk with you? I'm Jonas and he's D'Gar."
"I.. I don't know you." Millah hesitated.
"I have traveling papers from the High Priestess of Una." Jonas took a folded piece of paper out of his pocket and offered it to her. "She and her sisters are close personal friends of mine."
"Are you an assassin?"
"No. I'm a shadowwalker. I act as a mercenary sometimes." Jonas smiled.
"Sounds like an interesting life. I think I'll go now." Millah looked at D'Gar and hesitated. "Um. Will he let me pass?"
"Of course." Jonas smiled. "Rest D'Gar."
Millah walked toward DGar and the hellhound laid down and wagged his tail. She kept walking on the path to the cottage.
Jonas walked up and scratched DGars head. "She doesn't remember us. Those bastards must have wiped her memory. I wonder why they sent her here. The wise woman in the cottage will help her. There's nothing we can do but wait for her memory to return."
