I have noticed though that some fanfic writers have managed to turn some of their fanfics into original novels. So I wonder if that might be an option for you.
As to advertising your original writing maybe you should consider posting about it on social media (Tumblr, Twitter etc). I don't think it necessarily means that you are relying on followers, but I see it as a way to get the word out and build up a following.
