Rallentando (adjective) slackening; becoming slower (used as a musical direction)
Glut (verb, noun)
Symphony in I-95
The Friday evening glut of traffic on the outbound lanes of the city was higher than normal. It was the holiday weekend and it seemed as if everyone was leaving the city and heading for parts only know to themselves.
Harry sat in his car. He waited for the car in front of him to move. There had been stop and go traffic since he had gotten on the interstate.
One minute the traffic was moving slowly and then it would speed up. It seemed that that the ebb and flow of the traffic was going to be never ending.
Harry smiled. He looked out in front of him and imagined a symphony. Allegro movements followed by rallentando movements into the next allegro. He tried to think of what pieces of music this pattern would fit.
By the time he was off the interstate and pulling into his driveway he had come up with several pieces of music to listen to when he was stuck in traffic again.
