Meeting the Parents
Joni brought her boyfriend to dinner for the first time to her parents apartment in Manhattan.
Bret was not exactly what they expected. Instead of being a lawyer or a stockbroker he was a detective on the force.
Joni's father pulled Bret to the side after dinner. “What makes you think that a person like you deserves to date my daughter? She has attended the best schools. She has a career that will take her places. You are just some .....”
“Yahoo? Look. I know I'm not all spit and polish but I love her.” Bret said. “Besides what are going to do? Cut her off? She makes wads of money. She doesn't need yours. So maybe you should just get with the program.”
Joni's father was appalled at Bret’s comment. He had never been spoken to so bluntly.
On the other side of the room, Joni's mother was trying to convince her that Bret was not husband material.
“He is just so rough and unsophisticated. I'm sure he's great fun in bed but you move in social circles where he will not fit in at all.” Her mother said.
Joni rolled her eyes. “Thank you for Mother. He is the man I love and you just have to get used to it.”
“I'm telling you it won't work. You're too different.” Her mother told her.
“I think that's why we will work.” Joni stood up. “Bret, I'm ready to leave. They have both made fools of themselves and I have a headache.”
“Nice meeting you.” Bret said as he held out his hand for Joni. “Dinner is on us next time.”
Joni took his hand. “I think they would love having beer and pizza with us. Good night.”
Joni and Bret left her parents in shock.
“You know they love you even if they are snobs.” Bret said when they got in the taxi.
“I know.” Joni sighed. “I was just hoping they wouldn't be snobs until the second time we had dinner with them.”
“So are we still good?” Bret asked.
“Yeah.” Joni kissed him on the cheek and leaned against him.
