Julia took the glasses out of the cupboard and sat them on the counter. She opened the fridge and touched the champagne bottle to make sure it was chilling.

She has bought the best bottle she could afford. She wanted it to be a special moment that they would both remember for the rest of their lifetime.

Jack had proposed. Tonight she was going to tell him ‘yes’. She couldn’t wait to give him her answer. She had made the decision to marry him. All that was left to do was to tell him.

She looked at the clock on the microwave. He was late. She picked up her phone from the counter and dialed his number. It rang through to voice mail.

She looked at the phone in confusion. It was strange because he always answered his phone.

“Jack? This is Jules I was just wondering where you are. You’re late. Call me as soon as you get this.” Julia said on the message. She disconnected the call and went to sit in the living room to wait for him.

Twenty minutes later he was still not there. Julia was worried now. He had never been this late for anything. She reached out to pick up her phone and heard a knock at the door.

“There you are!” Julia went to answer the door.

When she opened the door, two very solemn faced policemen were standing there.

“Are you Julia carpenter?” One of them asked.

“Yes. How can I help you?” Julia replied.

“Ms. Carpenter, there has been an accident. Do you know a man by the name of Jack Bowen?” The officer asked her.

“Yes.” Julia felt her heart hit the floor. “Is he all right?”

“I’m sorry, miss. He was killed earlier this evening. He was hit head on by a drunk driver.” The policeman told her.

Julie dropped to the floor and sobbed.

This was not the way she wanted to remember this day. It was supposed to be happy. It was the day she was going to say yes to him. Now it was the day she lost him forever.

There was nothing to celebrate and there never will be.
