Gail let herself into Cass apartment. “Tell me what he did.” She sighed and shut the door.

“He didn't do anything. He was just being himself.” Cass started pouring things in a bowl. “I have no idea what I was thinking. Why would I ever want to get back together with him?”

“You never think when it comes to Paul.” Gail came over and sat down at the kitchen bar. “You two are silver and gold. The couple everyone would die to be like.”

“Die like Romeo and Juliet you mean.” Cass started stirring what was in the bowl.

“What are you making?” Gail eyed the contents of the bowl. “Are those chocolate chips?”

“I’m making cookies.” Cass slammed the mixing bowl down. “I need to do something to keep me from killing him.”

Gail laughed. “You know you're going to forgive him. You always do.”

Cass started putting lumps of dough on a sheet pan. “I don’t always forgive him.” She waved the spoon at Gail. “There was that one time he made me so mad I broke up with him.”

“For a week.” Gail snitched a blob of dough and took a bite. “You wailed and made everyone miserable. Paul finally groveled enough to get you to take him back. We were all so relieved.” She reached for another blob of dough and Cass smacked her hand with the spoon.

“Hey!” Gail rubbed her hand. “Why are you making chocolate chip cookies anyway? Isn't that Paul's favorite?”

“Yes.” Cass sighed. “I maybe need to say I’m sorry. I called him an untalented paint by number wanna be.”

Gail laughed so hard she nearly fell off the stool. “You called him what?”

“Don’t make me repeat it.” Cass put the first batch in the oven. “You would have thought i stabbed him in the heart.”

“You stabbed him in the ego. That’s worse.” Gail laughed. “You know how big that is.”

Cass glared at her friend. “Not helping.”

Gail laughed. “You better make two batches and show up naked under a trench coat to make up for that.”

Cass sighed. “I don’t have enough stuff for a second batch.”

There was a knock at the door. Gail got up to answer it. When she opened the door she laughed.

Paul walked in carrying a bottle of wine. “So she told you, did she?”

Gail laughed. “Oh yeah! Cass, I think I’m gonna go. Good luck.”

Cass frowned when Gail practically flew out the door.

Paul sat the bottle of wine on the kitchen bar. “I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to make you mad.”

Cass reached out and grabbed his hand. “I shouldn’t have called you a…”

“Untalented paint by number wanna be?” Paul laughed and leaned over to kiss her. “I love you too much to stay mad at you, Silver.” He kissed her.

“Good. I made cookies! Chocolate chip! Your favorite.” Cass scooped some dough out of the bowl and fed it to him.

He licked her finger and grinned. “Cookies and wine in bed?”

Cass nodded.
