Summary: Doug gets advice during a baseball game.

After Katy left, Doug tried to get his life back on track. He went to work and played baseball in the city weekend league. That didn’t mean that he could keep from thinking about what he had done to his family

A few weeks after Katy had taken the children and left, Doug stood at home plate and waited for the ball. He hesitated just a moment too long and the fastball went past him into the catcher’s mitt.

“Strike three!” The umpire shouted.

Doug turned around to face the umpire. “What do you mean strike three?”

“Doug, you were right there!” The umpire folded his arms across his chest. “Do you really need to ask?”

“No. I guess not.” Doug sighed. He dragged his bat along as he went back to the dugout. He saw the glare that the coach was giving him and he winced.

“Butch! You’re up!” Coach Mike grabbed Doug by the arm and pointed out on the field. “What was that? My five year old could have hit that meatball.”

Butch walked past them and gave Doug a sympathetic look.

“Maybe, you should have sent him in instead of me.” Doug put his bat in the rack and sat down. “I seem to be in a slump.”

Coach Mike laughed. “So that's what you're calling it. You haven't hit this bad since Sandy Miller broke your heart right before the tournament senior year. At least, you can still catch. You can still see the bump in bridge of your nose where you broke it when you let that fly ball hit you.”

“I didn't let it hit me. The sun was in my eye.” Doug glared at him. He took his batting helmet off and put it on bench next to him. “It's not Sandy Miller this time but it is a woman.”

“Let me guess.” Coach Mike sat down next to him. “It’s your sister in law, Gail. You really should have found someone else to have a thing with.”

“How do you know about that?” Doug was shocked that she knew.

“You talk too much when you drink.” Coach Mike grinned. “Harry told me about it when he got home last Saturday. How is Gail?”

“She’s happy because she has my balls in a vice.” Doug put his head in his hands. “I’m not happy. Katy left me. She went to live in another state with the kids.”

“That’s what happens when you don't keep it in your pants.” Coach Mike patted Doug on the back.

“Thanks for that. I suppose I should expect that from a woman.” Doug looked up at her. “I’m screwed.”

“Yep and so is she.” Coach Mike looked down the bench and waved. “Harry! You're up. Butch is on base so don’t strike out.”

Harry walked up to them. “Sure thing, Michaela. Should I bunt?”

“Not if you ever want to have sex again, Harold.” Coach Mike threw a batting glove at him. “You better get him home.”

Harry picked up the glove and blew her a kiss. “Yes dear.” He walked out onto the field.

“I’m an idiot. I threw it all away and I don’t know how to fix it.” Doug sat up. “Mike, you’re a woman. Any suggestions?”

“You need to get your balls back from Gail and use them.” Coach Mike grinned. “You can’t play baseball without balls.”

“Are you actually quoting Coach Hayes?” Doug gave her a surprised look. “You hated him.”

“Coach Hayes was a caveman. He thought girls shouldn’t play sports. He was a horrible softball coach but he did much better with you guys on the baseball team.” Coach Mike stood up and walked to the edge of the dugout. “Way to go Harry. Steve! You’re up and we need runs.”

Steve grinned as he jogged out of the dugout to home plate.

“You need to get a handle on this and fix it with Katy.” Coach Mike punched him in the arm. “Does she know who you were cheating on her with?”

“No. I didn’t tell her but she may know now. She and Gail had to have talked by now.” Doug was even depressed just thinking about it.

“You better do a lot of begging for forgiveness when you talk to Katy.” Coach Mike got very serious for a moment. “You might consider telling her everything. You know, like how it started and why it continued. I can’t say it would make a difference but it may help clear the air.”

“Would you forgive Harry if he slept with your sister?” Doug really needed to hear what she thought.

“My sister is a lesbian but I get what you’re asking. As soon as I found out he had been with my sister, or anyone, I would take a bat to his car and then to his head. You’re lucky because Katy was a lot calmer about this than I would ever be.” Coach gave him a meaningful look.

Doug put his head in his hands. He could feel the tightness in his chest get even tighter. He was doomed and talking to Michaela didn’t help. It just made him more depressed.

After the game Doug walked to his car and sent Gail a text. “We need to talk”

It didn’t matter if Katy took him back or not, Doug had to end this mess with Gail and he had to break it off.

Before he got to the car, Doug got a text from Gail. “Talking is not what I need. Get over here.”

Doug looked at the screen and gritted his teeth. This was not going to be as easy as he hoped.
