Summary: Katy arrives at her friend Mitchie’s house after stopping off at her mom’s. She wants to start a new life away from Doug.
When Katy pulled up into the driveway of Mitchie’s townhouse, she was tired and completely stressed from the drive. She looked at the sleeping children in the back seat and took a breath before she got out of the car.
The front door opened and Mitchie came out and waved. She shivered and hugged herself in the cold. She came down the front steps to the car
Katy got out of the car and waved back. “Mitchie thanks for this.”
“Not a problem. Jake is still deployed so it will just be me, you, and the kids.” Mitchie opened the back driver’s side door and started to unbuckle the seatbelt on the sleeping child’s car seat.
Katy went around to the passenger side and opened the door. She unbuckled her daughter and took her out of car seat.
Mitchie cuddled the little boy in her arms as she followed Katy to the door. “The door is open, Katy. I fixed up a bedroom for the kids we can put them to bed and have some wine.”
“Wine sounds really good right now.” Katy went through the door.
“It’s upstairs on the right.” Mitchie hip checked the door closed.
Katy headed up the stairs and found the bedroom. She put her daughter on one of the twin beds and took off her shoes and coat. “Just take his shoes and coat off. He won’t wake up once he’s out.”
“Got it.” Mitchie smiled. “Must be a boy thing. I was going to say man but even men are boys just bigger.”
“And more annoying.” Katy sighed and tucked in her daughter.
Mitchie laughed and pulled the cover over the little boy. “Come on. I have three bottles of wine and two good shoulders to cry on.”
Katy waved her out and closed the door. “I’ll sleep with them tonight. They’ve had enough upheaval in their lives these days. They had a hard time sleeping at Mom’s.:
“I was surprised that you went there before coming here. I know your mother was pleased that you and Doug broke up. She hated him.” Mitchie looped her arm around Katie's arm as they walked down the hall to the stairs.
“Oh, she was thrilled. She couldn’t keep her mouth shut about it. That’s why I had to leave her house.” Katy lowered her voice. “I was going to stay there for another week but I changed my mind. I couldn’t let the kids hear that crap about their father even if it was true. They still love him even if I am angry at him for being an idiot.”
“You should have just came straight here and not went to your mom’s first.“
“I felt like I was imposing on you. I didn’t want to be a bother.” Katy shrugged.
“You aren’t a bother.” Mitchie hugged her and went down the stairs. “I used to be so envious of you. Your husband was home every night and not on the other side of the world. You have kids. Jake isn’t home long enough for me to even get pregnant. But after I heard what Doug did and with who, I don’t know.”
“Well I still have the kids. He isn’t going to see them as long as he is with her.” Katy said following her. “My sister! Why did it have to be my sister?”
“Because he’s an idiot. Sit down and I’ll get the wine.” Mitchie pointed to the sofa and kept walking towards the kitchen. “I think I have something to eat in there if you’re hungry.”
“I’m starved.” Katy stretched out on the sofa. “My kids had something on the road but I was driving so I didn’t eat. I really haven’t had much of an appetite lately.”
“I’ll get you something.” Mitchie came from the kitchen with wine glasses and a bottle of wine. “I would have been in a food coma if that had happened to me. I stress eat.”
“I’d like to put him in a coma.” Katy sighed. “You know my mom thought it was hilarious that Doug was sleeping with Gail.”
“What did Gail say? Has she said anything to you since you found out?” Mitchie came back with an armful of snacks and a plate of cold chicken.
“Gail hasn’t said anything. I can’t even imagine what she could say to me to make this all right.” Katy picked up a bag of pretzels and opened it. “She’s always been a whore and now she’s a home wrecking whore.”
“Wow!” Mitchie opened the wine and poured Katy a glass. She held it out to her. “Here. Drink and forget just for tonight. You can start your new life on Monday.”
“I’m going to have to find a job and soon.” Katy took the glass and looked into the dark red wine. “I drained the bank accounts that I had access to but I’m going to run out of money soon.”
“Wait! What do you mean ‘the ones you had access to’?” Mitchie sat up and looked at her friend.
“He had a separate account that he didn’t tell me about.” Katy shrugged. “I have one that he doesn’t know about so I guess it’s only fair.”
“That’s just common sense for a woman with children to have a secret account but for a man that means he’s up to something.” Mitchie took a drink. “What do you think he’s up to?”
“I don’t know. I don’t even want to know.” Katy swirled the wine in her glass. “Mitchie, do you think he loves her?”
“No! She’s just a piece of ass to him.” Mitchie shook her head. “He’s just someone to buy her drugs and booze. Stop trying to compare yourself to her. It’s not going to help, you know.”
“I know.” Katy took a piece of chicken off the plate. “It’s just that she has always been the one with all the boyfriends and I have only just had Doug. Now I don’t even have him.”
“You and I know why she has all the boyfriends. You aren’t like that.” Mitchie shook her finger at Katy. “If Jake were here, he would beat the shit out of him for you.”
“When is Jake coming home?” Katy asked.
“It will be three months from yesterday.” Mitchie sighed. “I hate being alone. Why do we have to fight wars anyway?”
Katy shrugged. “Who knows?”
“Hey! Don’t think you have to be gone before he gets back. Jake won’t mind you being here and he would love to spend time with the kids.”
“I know but it would be easier if I had my own place and a job before he came home.” Katy took a drink of her wine. “I came all the way out here to start over and that’s what I’m going to do.”
“Just don’t move too far away. I’m sure I’ll need the company sooner or later.” Mitchie picked a pretzel out of the bag and looked at it. “Jake wants to do another tour.”
Katy shook her head. “I’ll be around to keep you company.”
“And Doug?” Mitchie asked.
“Gail can have him.” Katy sighed. “I’m done with him.”
