WRITING 6/11/12

How do you deal with writing a character whose personality is the polar opposite of yours?

This is a problem I still struggle with as a writer. I have a difficult time with heroes and villains. My own personality being somewhere in the middle of those two extremes I find it difficult to ‘become’ those characters as I write.

Original characters are more difficult when they are supposed to be one of the extremes. I have no point of reference except the character profile I give them. I must have a back story in mind for the character to be believable.

My fan fiction writing helps me with this because I can play the character as s/he is portrayed by the actor. It gives me practice and sometimes perspective on how a character gets to a point in their life where they are good/evil.
